  • Comic Adventure: Hoofstuck

    by Sethisto
    I never did try out that Homestuck thing that used to invade out pony threads on /co/ all the time, but I saw how incredibly popular it was.   From the looks of it, this is the pony version - and at 170-190 pages, it's nothing to scoff at.
    Description: Pinkie Pie has invented a new game that can alter the fabric of reality and threatens to destroy all of Equestria. Does nopony but Twilight think this is a bad idea? This is a suggestion-driven comic, meaning reader suggestions are partially responsible for what happens in the story.
    Pinkie Pie ftw!   Check it out here.

      The only reason I'm not going to look at Homestuck is because everyone I know that has say that they can't create any fic ideas that aren't like it. I guess I'll check this out, though.

      I tried reading this in the past (author mentioned a preference to sepia tock) but couldn't really get into it due to how flanderdized the characters were. but that's my problem, and it's rather well drawn.

      Wow, really? I saw this comic's beginning a very long time ago. I just didn't know of Homestuck at the time when I had first seen this comic. It was paired with the Scootaloo's Big Adventure commenter driven story line thing.

      Oh man, Seth you should someday try Homestuck, maybe you don't like it but it's definitely worth to try. No joke when I say (or rather, think) is one of the most awesome webcomics around, and one of the greatest stories ever written.

      You kinda miss the point of MS Paint Adventures/Hoofstuck. It's structure is a love letter to adventure games of yore, and there's a big "SUGGESTIONS" box at the bottom that you can click to get linked to a thread to make action suggestions.

      Yeah I don't get the concept... Whats the point of the "interactive" comic if you only get one choice on every page? Im supposed to suggest something for that page, and then what, wait a month or two to maybe see it implemented? Sorry, sounds like a massive waste of time to me, but like I said I don't get it.

      @Bronymous

      It's interactive in that the character's next actions (the ones you see go up on the site) are suggested by readers via email. Same way Homestuck used to be. (Although he stopped doing that for the sake of story development.)

      ...I was explaining the process to you. I wasn't ranting. I was explaining why there seems to be only one choice. Yes, you could say in a way, it's a work in progress. The same way that any running webcomic is. The difference is that people are (usually) allowed to input a suggestion, and if the author likes it, then they use it.

      @Bronymous

      As I mentioned before, the system works like this: you make a suggestion in the box, if the author of the comic likes the suggestion/thinks it's funny/etc, they implement the choice. It's not "wait one month and maybe see it implemented", it's wait a much shorter amount of time and hope that your suggestion was creative enough to direct the path that the comic takes. Interactivity goes hand in hand with posting suggestions.

      I guess you could think of it like an Ask Blog, in a sense.

      I really have to make free time at some point.

      Let me clarify this so that people will stop asking.

      People can make suggestions about what the characters do NEXT. That is to say, once you get to the most recent update, then you suggest what happens.

      Yes, there is only one path in the archives. This is the path created by the people who were there before you, when this all began.

      It will help you immensely understand how it works if you read the original forum thread, instead of the mirror. Go here:

      http://www.mspaforums.com/showthread.php?40908

      You're joining the story in the middle, so catch up on what's already happened without you and then participate.

      I hope this helped, and stops the questions about why there's only one path.

      It was an interesting read, not my favorite, but nether the less. I found it hard to follow at the beginning, but once you pick up the patterns from then on out its almost smooth sailing. I am looking forward to the rest, and maybe even some plot twist, who knows? I might be confused because I lack any knowledge on what a "Homestuck" is or even if it is a thing. I would recommend this to a read as well, as it puts a different twist on things. SPOILER: Their is some seems to be Shippings involved.

      Nobuckingwaynobuckingwaynobuckingwaynobuckingway. I am currently halfway-through a marathon-read of Homestuck, and now this!? It's too perfect.

      For those who don't know what Homestuck is, it is a MS Paint Adventures webcomic written/drawn/composed by Andrew Hussie. It is literally THOUSANDS of pages long, and operates similar to an old-fashioned text-adventure videogame, except the plot is more complex, looping, and awesome as every horror and science fiction story ever written, combined. Seriously this is some messed up craziness that requires a person to store and remember more data than a college calculus class.

      And now you tell me that there is a pony version? Hrrrrnnnngggggg.

      The terminology is needlessly complicated. But once you understand the videogame-like elements that are somehow a given in this iteration of Ponyville, the story's kind of neat... but also needlessly complicated.

And on a side note, YES I finaly came up with a name I like, after weeks of content and not posting once, I can impute my opinion on these storys. Homestuck? YEAH!!!!!!!!

      Okay, quick bit of exposition here. Homestuck, the internet webcomic by Andrew Hussie, is the longest webcomic in existence (thanks to, on average, 6 updates per day). It is a storytelling masterpiece, both in terms of its mind-boggling complexity and its ability to integrate Flash video elements and walkaround games. However, it's really not for everyone. Hussie's sense of humor and willingness to troll readers is...well let's just say not everyone will like it. After act 3, it also becomes really epic.

      See, I /highly/ recommend against reading this unless you've read Homestuck. You won't understand /anything/.

      That being said, I /highly/ recommend reading Homestuck. It is a wonderfully written, animated, and drawn webcomic which clocks in at about 6000 pages.

      And its plot is ludicrously complicated if you're not keeping track. Just warning everyone.

      Mkay, after reading a couple of dozen pages, I have to say that Hoofstuck has captured the MSPA vibe perfectly. The style and comedic timing is exactly what I would expect Hussie to do. This is brilliant. Please continue.

      If anyone actually decides to read Homestuck because of this, act one is boring, you might need to read the MS Paint Adventures wiki to understand things.

      Also, read everything (pesterlogs), don't skip to the trolls, at least read till the end of act 3, if you don't like it by then, stop.
