The MLP Facebook page is going to be releasing one image a day from Season Two until it starts on the 17th! Sadly today's image is something we threw up a few days ago, but this could be a really neat system regardless. It's something to look forward to right?

ReplyDeleteIs anyone else really bugged by all the strange errors in the architecture of the room in the screen shot?
ReplyDeleteThe more I look at it the more mistakes I see.
For example:
There are flagpoles floating in midair, the carpet design is coming off of the carpet, the pillars aren't connected to anything, windows coming out of the wall, the bottoms of some of the windows are crooked, and a lot more.
The upper right hand corner of the screenshot is particularly dense with these mistakes.
This makes me wonder how many other scenes from the show look this ridiculous when viewed with a critical eye.
Don't get me wrong I love the screen shot, it's the most awesome season 2 related thing so far imo; it just seems strange that the very detailed and awesome stained glass windows are contrasted so strongly by the strange MC Escher architecture.
Maybe they could justify it by being Discord's fault, that he is manipulating the architecture to make it look like really weird, but it seems too subtle to be a story element, I really doubt the target demographic of little girls is going to be thinking
"Oooh the windows aren't following the rules of perspective, some weird stuff is going on, Discord is a baaaad chimaera!"
Maybe it's a manifestation of discord that only artists, graphic designers, schizophrenics etc. are supposed to pick up on? That would be awesome but it seems to good to be true.
What do you think? Have I been staring at this screen shot too long?

ReplyDeleteIt's entirely possible that this isn't the final version of this scene. Unlikely, perhaps, but possible.
We all know that promotional material doesn't necessarily match the final product exactly, in any case. So at least there's hope.
Yeah, every time one new image is released everyone is going to be going nuts and drawing a million new theories. :P

ReplyDeleteI think you're being too critical. For background art it is very well done and it dellivers the dramatic effect it's supposed to.
It would take me hours to recreate that scene, something that only has a bout a few seconds of screen time.
You need to look at the whole picture and look at it from there.
Finallly, perspective is tedious and challenging, I'm surprised that they didn't make more mistakes.

@Aquaman52 the window derp is in the hub commercial too. However, its likely you won't notice it if you're paying attention to the story and not looking for problems.

ReplyDeleteI completely agree that the background looks fantastic as a whole, especially the stained glass windows.
However I personally found the abundance of errors very hard to just ignore.
I'm thinking the artist had to make the background parallax a bit in other shots, where the background is viewed at a slightly different angle; as a result some objects are out of place. That's my theory.
I know maybe it wasn't necessary to pour over the image, notice all the flaws, and take note of them; but I felt it was an interesting exercise, and gave me some insight into the inner workings of the show.
Such an awesome image deserves to be viewed from a critical perspective.
