We got to see Twilight Sparkle/Pinkie Pie's parents, but the rest of the mane cast is still a mystery. Our fanon needs to be blown out of the water!

ReplyDeleteOK, can we officially declare Applejack's parents dead if they don't show up in Season 2? That's kind of my head-canon right now, and in a peculiar way, I am almost afraid to see it Jossed.
ReplyDeleteI try not to over-think these things. It's sometimes fun to wonder how this or that came to be. Especially RD's rainbow mane. But I also remember it's a cartoon after-all. :P

Isn't the answer to that question clear? Obviously Dash was conceived (and possibly born) in a hot tub filled with rainbows instead of water.

ReplyDeleteThat's how a lot of people look at it, oddly enough. I do too, but mostly because I find the idea that AJ's hat belonged to her father is touching...
One thing I'm wondering, which I should've asked when Seth, Cereal, and Phoe started taking questions for the next Q+Neigh was "How do you think the fandom shall react and adapt to Season Two invalidating all kinds of fanon based on Season One?"
But are the pony families we see actually related to the mane six, or are they just pony families in the background?

I personally believe that as long as popular OCs aren't renamed or whatever that the fandom will take The Great Jossing of Season Two quite nicely.
@ Fritz X: I would assume so; I'm sure we've at least seen skeletons and such, and if a Cockatrice can turn Twilight to stone or all the other forms of danger we've seen the girls encounter over the first season, just because we haven't seen anyone actively die on-screen (and, let's be realistic, probably never will) doesn't mean Death is not still an underlying truth of the FiM universe.

@Mattatta: Yeah, that's about my thoughts on it too; I too very much like the idea that AJ got her hat from one of her late parents. Also because it just sort of makes sense. We didn't see them at the Apple Family Reunion in the first episode OR in AJ's flashback to when she left Sweet Apple Acres; if they arent' dead, where the Hay are they? XD
...Why don't I feel happy about this? Why don't I feel the need to watch season two? OMG HELP! D:

ReplyDeleteL Faust stepped down as Director to a consultant. Jayson Thiesson took over as the head of the show for season 2.
Sweetie Belle may very well not live with Rarity, though.

She was involved when they were coming up with the ideas for the scripts of Season Two.
And THIS is why I've kept it very, very vague on who's families are present, their histories and so on!

Yes.
Everything about the show hints that birth, youth, aging, and death are part of life for ponies, immortal demigodesses aside. Dialog includes expressions like “to die for”, plots hinge on threats to life and limb—notably the climax of “Sonic Rainboom”. It’s not addressed explicitly, but all the background assumptions that underlie the writing, world-building, and character interaction are very clear indeed.

ReplyDeleteNot to mention how Fluttershy reacted to the 'death' of Philomena. Also, it's not likely that Granny Smith will just keep getting older and never die... she'd end up looking like the Crypt Keeper from Tales From the Crypt, and that would be disturbing.

ReplyDeleteI have also got into my head-fanon that AJ's parents are dead. Everyone of the mane 6 lives on their own (well, in Pinkie's case its just an apartment, but anyway) except Applejack - she lives on the family farm. It feels really weird that you let your barely adult kids run the family farm and then just move away for farmers. And when AJ introduces her extended family in episode one, she doesnt stop and say "oh and thats my Mom!".
For everyone else I can easily justify the parents not being there - as someone said, Rarity could be just having Sweetie Belle visit now and then, maybe her parents are away on business and asks Rarity to babysit, maybe they live nearby but not in Ponyville. But not for Applejack.
I like to think it's some sort of custom to dye young fillies' and colts' manes and coats once they reach a certain age.

I've always been curious about the parents. I really want to know about Fluttershy's parent. She comes of as having a bit of a sheltered childhood so I always wonder if she is just distant with her parents or if they are just not around.
ReplyDeleteSince we saw in Cutie Mark Chronicles that G1 Twilight is the current Twilight's mother, I wonder if we'll see something similar for the rest of the cast, e.g. Firefly as Rainbow's mother. I don't know how lawyer-friendly that would be if they lost the rights, but if they aren't named and thus aren't planning on selling toys of them they could probably get away with it.

ReplyDeleteI personally don't believe that the majority of what happened in "The Cutie Mark Crusaders" is true (especially Pinkie Pie's family), but I still think it'd be pretty cool to see more of the families. I just hope some of the families don't relate to anything was revealed in that episode.
