I know we just did Drawfriend, but I couldn't resist putting this
I can't explain it. Octavia is just the most adorable thing in the world sometimes. I dunno what it is about her. Maybe her color scheme is what's appealing. It's certainly not a canon personality I'm attached to, because as far as we know she doesn't have any. It's all stuff you guys have made up. That must be it. You guys are really good at taking these background ponies with no story to them outside what we see them do in the show and making these extremely likable characters out of them. I love you, Octav- I mean, uh, you guys.
There's a second bonus Luna comic after the break, too. Personally I'm just here for the Octavia. Look at those adorable purple eyes. I want to hug her and take her home with me.

That first comic screams Peanuts at me. The style, and the gags, plus how there was no dialogue. It's just entirely Peanuts with Octavia.

I'm also incredibly impressed by how well--and the relative consistency with which--this fandom has characterized the background ponies. Derpy Hooves in the most visible example, but I've managed to form pretty clear pictures in my head of Vinyl, Lyra, Octavia, Colgate . . .

ReplyDeleteOf course I'm kinda biased since I'm writing a fic with her in it. She is pretty fun to write for and develop. She's fun to write as a basically sweet person who just ... kind of has an attitude when she has to put up with what she feels is stupid, heh.
But yeah, I thought these comics were adorable. Filly Octavia is the best.

Octavia seems especially popular lately, not that I mind in the slightest! It never ceases to amaze me how well these background characters are characterized. We got bronies churning out super duper awesome nifty stories ALL THE TIME.

ReplyDeleteI've always been a big lover of 'background'/secondary/tertiary characters. So much potential in them. I love the "complete world" feeling of this show--as though it's really all going on while we're watching the exploits of whichever characters we happen to observe in any given episode...and literally everypony has an interesting life and story in his/her own right, and is worth pondering and finding out about!

I personally love silent protagonists (i.e. Link or Samus Aran(exept other m)) and a story told mostly or purely through actions, I personally think that they can work very well (depending on the context) and in some cases improve the story if they fit the context. Octavia's body language and expressions are just perfect in these comics. Hats off to the creator.

ReplyDeleteThe Octavia comic sort of reminds me of those really old charlie brown comics, back when Linus was so young he couldn't talk, (made in the late 50's early 60's) and would always have many humorous situations, built by repetition, movement and expression. This brings me back to that. :)
