ReplyDeleteWho censored that image? And more to the point, why? Is there anyone in the world stupid enough to not know what words I'm using when I type f*ck and s*it? That kind of language may not fit in to the general idea of MLP, but this kind of censorship is just a weaselly attempt to use those words without *actually* using them. You want to say it, but you don't want to own it.
ReplyDeleteI think the proper way to deal with this would be to leave the full-sized image uncensored, and put a warning next to the thumbnail or link telling people that there's some NSFW (Not Safe For Work) language there.
And i just started re-watching MLP:FIM before seeing this.

That said, this really ISN'T much of a kids cartoon. The Brony Show put it best, "They use the word 'assertive' as though it's nothing. Most people don't learn the word assertive until high school, and I actually didn't until college because I was dumb".

I like (love) My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, because it's so unlike any other cartoon I've ever seen. Nowadays, so many shows are all about crudeness, violence, or just all-around blue humor. Even the kids shows these days feel obligated to shovel the 'coolness' factor all over any and every scene. Sure, this formula does work, and can be entertaining, but the fact it's nearly the only thing we as viewers see anymore can get old fast. MLP:FiM is so unique, because it takes something so good-natured as learning about friendship, and makes it even more entertaining than shows like Family Guy, or South Park WITHOUT resorting to getting cheap laughs, or any kind of filler. FiM is a good show, because it's a show its viewers can be proud of on a level they can't with other shows. The level of quality in this show, be in the animation, writing, acting, or any other aspect of the cartoon, is something we rarely see in any form. It may have originally started as a way to sell MLP toys by Hasbro, but the staff being FiM really helped it grow into something far greater: a show that is genuinely good on all fronts.

I always get annoyed at that type of censorship. I can at least half-respect it when someone says "crap" instead of "shit", because maybe the person was actually thinking the less offensive version. But blurring out one letter is weak.
It reminds me of Scott Adams' explanation of why the asterisk is the filthiest letter of the English language.

I didn't particularly like it, but not in a "OMG IT CURSED BURN IT" way. I loved the "MOTHERFUCKING GRAPES" picture, but this was just kind of meh for me.
