Speaking of shipping...why the heck hasn't somebody written a Pinkie Sparkle/Twilight Pie story? Those two desperately need to be shipped--it just makes sense! Maybe even Psycho Pie with Twilight...I'd look forward to reading it!
Interesting, first time I heard the term "Shipping" I thought about ocean liners. Another series and it made no sense having those two characters on boats.
Then I looked into it, why oh why did I look into it?
I had to read a few fanfics to figure out what shipping was... didn't really get it till one was boarderline clomp... then I wondered wtf a clomp fic was... curiosity killed the pony
Sigh... Yet another shipping thing. I put up with it, but it gets tiring. It's just fine for fan stuff, but LAUREN FAUST already said RD wasn't lesbian.
I personally didn't know what "shipping" was (including the meaning of transporting cargo by the means of land, sea or air) until I stumbled across the wrong page in wikipedia while looking for the meaning of "shipping" (the meaning of transporting cargo by the means of land, sea or air... not the fanfic meaning.)
"The activity of fans creating relationships out of some or most of the cast of characters far predates the term. Though "ship" is undoubtedly a derivative of the word "relationship", where and when it was first used to indicate involvement with fictional romance is unclear. However, the archives of the newsgroup X-files show that the word "shipper" was already in established use among fans of The X-Files as early as May 1996." - Wikipedia
The first time I heard the term "shipping" in THIS context was the Madmax comic where Twilight tells Trixie they both need more "shipping" before tackling her.
I read it, had a "lol wut" reaction, but eventually asked the /b/ thread what the hell it meant. I felt pretty dumb for not figuring it out, honestly.
ANYWAYS, this comic rocks too. Poor sad Dashie...I'll buck you back anytime, girl.
@Anonymous Faust said that her sexuality was never discussed. Key difference there. Besides, with the massive imbalance between the male-to-female ratio, it's more than likely that lesbian couples are a common thing in Equestria.
Meanwhile, I felt bad for Dash at the end, although the pun made me laugh regardless.
I learned about shipping with AtLA, where we had the great shipping wars. sadly the Cannon fire sank the last of the Zutara fleet, and we were defeated by the combined might of Kataang and Maiko.
- In dedication to the brave forces of Zutara and their allies the Taang, may their bravery and devotion never be forgotten.
@Anonymous Assuming TvTropes (or my memory) isn't failing me, it started with X-Files fans being for or against "relationshipping" or something like that, and it got shortened to "shipping". Then fanfic.
Slash, at least how it is usually used, is a little different. Slash is generally reserved for guy/guy relationships (and, more rarely, girl/girl), whereas shipping is more of a catch-all term.
Huh? Which Battleship did Pooniburo ship Pinkie with?
And it better be a Battleship... if it's a Battlecruiser I may let it slide, but if it's a grossly mislabeled Destroyer I'm gonna lynch whoever wrote it.
heh, I love it that the makers of the X-Files gave the fans what they wanted in the last episode (IE Scully and Mulder making out0 and it was the most uncomfortable kissing scene in anything I've ever seen... It was like watching your parents making out... *Brrrrr...* =.=
See about them being together, I could actually see that. I'm not even talking sexually. I don't really even care about the fact that it would be homosexual, but them together just makes sense to me for some reason.
@ToonNinja Eh, point taken. Sometimes I wish they'd introduce more male characters. Who have we actually got that's male (and canon)? Spike, Braeburn, Soarin', Hoity Toity, those idiots from Sonic Rainboom, Mr. Cake... Not exactly an impressive list. Sigh...
I'm inclined to think there are more boys than we see. The cartoon centers on the girls, so we see way more girls than boys. Though I do admit that the proportions of male to female is way more skewed than it is here. Maybe 5:8 or 2:3?
All the same, we are discussing MLP here. As much as people can speculate and do fanstuffs, the odds are extremely slim any alternative lifestyles would be introduced to a cartoon that, despite its bizarre fanbase, still has an intended demographic of little girls. So as far I'm concerned, it all resides in the minds of us to make our own decisions.
All the same... This fandom can often get shiptacular. It starts grating after a while.
@kriss1989 Bah! You think that was bad? According to Tv Tropes, the bloodiest shipping war of all was located in the Pokemon franchise. THAT, my friend, was downright brutal.
@Anonymous Yeah, I doubt that'd go over too well with a canon lesbian. Maybe someday, though, when people aren't so uncomfortable about homosexuality. It could happen. Also, to be fair, more often than not they make REALLY cute couples. Of course, that might be the overall adorability, but who's really keeping track? I'm not.
I don't recall where I learned what "shipping" was exactly. Maybe I've blocked the memory out?
Short version: I don't like shipping much at all, but I don't get saddlesore about it. I do think harmless "friend shipping" is fine. Lyra and Bon Bon are cute.
As the artist of the comic, I just want to say I actually DON'T support the idea of Rainbow Dash being gay (unless the creators say she is), I just needed a punchline and went with it. ;)
Actually, the male:female ratio in MLP:MiF is consistent with that of wild horses (wild horses have harems consisting of a dominant male and dominant female and several other lesser females.*) So it's not that unrealistic to have more females than males. More by accident, one suspects, than design, but the fact remains.
(Actually, an examination of horse behavior in wiki revealed a number of interestingly convergant points with the show, including the fact horses are prone to psychotic behavior - as the main cast (and probably Luna) have demonstrated... Go look, it's quite interesting.)
*And now I'm opening a whole other can of worms... Sorry, everypony! *slaps hand*.
Though seriously, I'm mildly surprised there haven't been harem fics already, given their comparative prevalence in other fanfic-doms like Harry Potter or Naruto.
I found out about shipping from a image search for Avatar: The Last Airbender wallpapers about 4 years ago. Because of a header image here one day, I had to explain shipping to my 13 year old sister. Not a fun conversation, I ended up using examples from "Fall Weather Friends" to explain it. Her reaction was very close to the reaction the guys from Supernatural had to Slash ficion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Wz2KWCixtE
@ToonNinja Maybe I'll live to see that happen. Hopefully. I crave that day.
I may not be a fan of shipping, but I do concede that a few couples would be adorable in canon. Most of my irritation comes from all the heaps of shipping we keep getting hit with and lack of canon.
@socchan OK, so Rainbow Dash would be Katara for the whole 'ship with everything' bit, and Luna for the whole 'Don't make me use my Moon Powers on you!', but how would you resolve it?

ReplyDeleteoh rainbow dash you silly little pony
ReplyDeleteI'm here, it's funny that somepony would think that about me. I guess they're right, the internet is a strange place...
ReplyDeleteI learned about shipping from Touhou. Makes total sense.
ReplyDeleteAnd my dictionary doesn't give another explanation for shipping as in transporting cargo.
ReplyDeleteI don't get it. :/
I AM LAUGHING.
ReplyDeleteHEAR ME LAUGHT.
HA.
THERE.
(Seriously though, t'was very funny)

ReplyDeleteI laughed.
ReplyDeleteThen I wanted to know who drew it, because I liked the style.
So I checked out the source.
And then I regressed and felt like puking.
Sorry, femmegasm tends to not be my cup of tea.
I learned of shipping when i watched avatar.
ReplyDeleteZutara VS Katang still gives me nightmares.
@Ivan2294
ReplyDeleteI HEAR YOU LAUGHING.
HEAR ME HEAR.
*silence*
THERE.
Honestly, I don't think Twilight likes Pinky so much as she just puts up with her.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the post. I now have at least two definitions for shipping. Sadly I will only ever use one of them ;p
ReplyDeleteI also did not what shipping meant until I came across this fandom.

ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that fanfics could be good until I came to this fandom.
ReplyDeleteI'd never heard of 'Shipping' either...now I can't get enough. >_<
ReplyDeleteDamn you ponies. What have you done to my mind?
Although it makes one wonder how 'Shipping' came to mean 'Non-canon relationships between fictional characters'. :s

I hope that answers your question.
Learned about the horrors shipping through the "Golden Sun" game franchise on the GBA.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of which, has there been a ponies+Golden Sun crossover of any kind yet?
Now that is a pun I can live with.
ReplyDeletePinkie Pie x Fluttershy
ReplyDeleteRarity x Twilight Sparkle
Applejack x Rainbow Dash/Twilight Sparkle

I don't give a ship about jack-*FACEHOOFED*

I prefer Flutter Dash shipping. They just seem to complement each other in my eyes.

before MLP fandom I just thought it was slash <_< not "shipping..."
ReplyDeleteOr, to further play along with the humor of 'two definitions for a word'...
ReplyDeleteWhy does Rainbow Dash want to be kicked by Applejack? I would think that would be a very painful experience!
I learned what "shipping" way back in my pre-teen years, when I was really big on anime.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteAssuming TvTropes (or my memory) isn't failing me, it started with X-Files fans being for or against "relationshipping" or something like that, and it got shortened to "shipping". Then fanfic.

I bet Applejack is rushing to post more AppleDash fics!

ReplyDeleteOkay, that's it. There's enough AtLA fans here I can TOTALLY get away with ponifying the School Time Shipping short. Now where'd I put my pencil...
ReplyDeleteB'awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
ReplyDelete;_;
All you youngsters and your "shipping"
ReplyDeleteIn my day, we just called it "slash"
Yeah, both the concept and name of shipping threw me at first. Then I went...oh right, it's the internet.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, I think I'll stick to Rarity and Spike being as close as we get to that. Thanks anyway, concerningly large number of fanfics on the topic.
That's not...RD...

ReplyDeleteWhy is it that RD looks like a Yoshi in the last two panels?
ReplyDeletehehe, Bucking.
ReplyDeletePinkie x Battleship? That's not even the weirdest one.
ReplyDeleteThere's a chatbot in one of the IRC channels that ships Scootaloo with Protoman.EXE
@avengerskipper83417 no, that would be fucking weird, gtfo
