the moment when this is the greatest piece of writing that i have ever and will ever read.......i am at less for words, bravo
ReplyDelete@Unknown
ReplyDeleteDid you not read the afterword? Homage and Pip get the occasional day together.
Does anyone know any published books similar to FO:E? I'm enjoying Project Horizons, but I don't have the patience to wait every week :p
ReplyDelete@WaffleSmart
ReplyDeleteBooks about technicolor ponies in a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland? No. But there are several with sorta similar themes; dark, realistic sorts of fantasy or low sci-fi, heroes (or anti-heroes) struggling against impossible odds, virtue and corruption, etc.
Others probably have better suggestions, and I'm not sure exactly which qualities of Kkat's story you want, but I'd personally recommend Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher series, John Ajvide Lindqvist's Let the Right One in, and Jim Butcher's Dresden Files.
@Sindri
ReplyDeleteLol, no, I wasn't looking for technicolor wastland ponys :p more along the lines of post apocolyptic adventure.
I've played The Witcher, and seen Let the Right One In, and I loved both. Dresden Files looks interesting, I might try that one out
@WaffleSmart If you want Post-Apocalyptic fiction 'The Stand' by Stephen King has everything you need.
ReplyDeleteI've already raved about this story as much as possible. The story-telling, the pacing, the tone, the emotional involvment you feel towards the characters... I can't state anything that hasn't been stated. What I can do, quite easily, is tell you all the song I found to be a perfect fit. In not only atmosphere but also lyrically. Hell, I even showed it to the author. Don't know if she remembers tho, heh.
ReplyDeleteAlexisonfire - This could be anywhere in the world.
This town has its claws buried in my neck,
This town - it takes life without mercy, without hate
(the streets are in distress, the sun suffocates behind darkened skies)
The grass is growing on top of my feet,
I'm thinking, it won't be to long until before i'm too deep to run
(the line up seems endless underneath the salvation signs)
We are the dead ones, we are the lost cause,
We are the bend before the break, our steps seal our fate
Because this city, this city is haunted by ghosts (ghosts) from broken homes (homes)
Because this city, this city is haunted, there's no hope (hope), left for these souls (souls)
Every step i take i leave a small piece of myself behind
Soon there will be nothing left
(the cracks in the pavement, match the cracks in their weathered skin)
The sky's a brick wall, the ground's a juggernaut.
Each day they get a bit closer, between them, i am caught
(as i stare in amazement, i can't believe this is where i live)
Every breathe i take, i feel my lungs seal
This breeze feels more like shards of glass, i'm more scars than skin
----
I pretty much show this to anyone who reads the story. I hope you all find something in the song =P
I won't bother with an in-depth analysis on WHY I think the song fits. Its all up to anyone who listens =3
Also, Hi Kkat! If you are reading this =P
@WaffleSmart
ReplyDeleteDresden Files is one of my favorite book series...es...es! A bit of advice, though -- it's classified as "urban fantasy", so if that genre might put you off, I suggest that you start with book 3 (Grave Peril), and go back to read the first two once you've decided that you like the series. The first two books are "fine", but Butcher was still finding his style at the time.
@WaffleSmart
ReplyDeleteThe Witcher games are good, but the books are magnificent. It's a shame that they're so slow about translating them to english; if you know pretty much any other european language you'd be better off, otherwise the first collection of short stories and the first 2/5 of the primary saga are all you've got so far.
For post-apocalyptic literature I'll point you at Mira Grant's Newsflesh trilogy (a very well done series set shortly after a zombie apocalypse), and beyond that I gesture in the vague direction of the "after the end" section of tvTropes.
@silentcarto
Yeah, the first book seems to be the low point of the series; I started in the second and went back.
@WaffleSmart
ReplyDeleteAlternately, you might want to consider checking out the Fallout: Equestria Resource website. The site not only compiles all the Fallout: Equestria side stories (and there are many really good ones), but it also offers an IRC where there are over half a dozen Fallout: Equestria roleplaying games being run each week.
^.^
Wowza. Just finished reading this, and what a doozie. Kudos to Kkat. I just spent about 34 hours in the head of someone else. Coming out of that can be a bit disorienting, but I loved every second of it.
ReplyDeleteI gotta ask who bore the other elements, though? The afterword, featuring Fluttershy was nice, but I wanted to know who got all the EoH? I did like that Littlepip could come out of suspension every now and again, to spend time with Homage, though. I was kinda sad when that was broken up, though 30 minuets later I was happy again, it was a nice wrap up.

Damn slow computer... *mumble*
ReplyDeleteJust finished FO:E for the second time...
ReplyDeletestill reeling in amazement at its utter wonderfulness
..... War, War Never Changes...... AND THIS FANDOM BETTER NOT EITHER! OI!
ReplyDeleteNow that we are at it - how is Kage to be pronounced?
ReplyDelete@S008
ReplyDeleteI always read it as 'cage,' though I suppose it might be 'kah-jey.'
Does anyone know if Fallout: Equestria is going to be uploaded to FiMFiction.net?
ReplyDelete@S008
ReplyDeleteI always pronounced it Japanese-style -- KAH-gay.
Wow, just finished all of it. The ten years later bit was amazing. Loved the ending. The greatest fanfic i have ever read. Congratulations to you kkat for creating this legend of a story. I only wish that all stories are written this well. Thank you for making this.
ReplyDeleteFallout Equestria: the greatest
@Kkat: Not sure if you've already seen this, but psychgoth wanted somebody to show this to you:

ReplyDelete- Fallout: Equestria book published
Amazing story, I disliked the ending, but only because we never found out what happened to Rainbow Dash. Otherwise this was truly an amazing (and moving) story.
ReplyDeleteI really hope we find out in the end!
@Zilent
ReplyDeleteSome mysteries don't need to be solved. Some just don't have enough evidence left. Some are meant to be put together by somepony else, after this story is ended.
And some are left as bait for the authors of recursive fanfics.
anypony else think he should have explained how the hell he managed to talk to pinkie pie and i dont like the ending i mean it took so long to read and it ended in the i mean come on it fucks with my mind to think about the story and ill probaly not bother with fanfiction for a whihle. othehr then that it was a GREAT story
ReplyDelete@lonlybrony
ReplyDeleteExplain how Pinkie can grab the edges of an iris-out. Then you'll have your answer.
@Unknown:
ReplyDeleteDon't forget the Fallout: Equestria game!
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteI left you a PM over at Ponibooru, but I'm not sure if it's really you over there.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteHey Kkat, I forced myself to watch my roommate play Dungeons & Dragons with his similarly nerdy friends, and after about 10 minutes, I got so bored that I left. I mean, based on your description, I thought there would be tons of role playing and story telling, but literally all I saw was just rolling dice, consulting rulebooks, and scribbling on pads of paper. I can't fathom what you see in that game.
Perhaps I should try the FoE-themed tabletop games going on in my very dormitory, although I'm not sure if it's your FoE or Somber's.
Fallout: Equestria 1 Year Anniversary Special.
ReplyDeletehappy one year anniversary Kkat!
ReplyDeleteI'd read it again to celebrate but I think my heart would break.
Whoo! 1 year anniversary! Celebrate with Kit Kats!
ReplyDeleteAlso thanks for the rec. Numberman, The Stand was awesome. Who would of thought fanfiction would get me back into reading?
@WaffleSmart
ReplyDeleteWell, in my experience schools either give you outdated pretentious garbage or take something decent and "analyze" it to worthless shreds. Then you look at the books that get media attention, and they range from the halfway decent (Rowling) to the utter crap (Meyer), with very little variety and no real high quality pieces. So most people these days have practically no experience reading things for fun.
Fanfic provides a natural step between something you already like and literature that you'll actually enjoy, with dozens of helpful strangers on the internet to push you along.
@Sindri
ReplyDelete"...with dozens of helpful strangers on the internet to push you along."
God, you make it sound like a big panel van with "Free Fiction" spray-painted on the side...
@silentcarto
ReplyDelete...
So you're saying you want me to keep my spray paint away from your panel van? But how else will we lure in children to read awesome stories?
Just read the Balloon Orb (where Pinkie has a mental breakdown after the Last Party Orb) and i realized that the mirror that Rarity sent to Pinkie (a mirror that has been enchanted to show an image of a pony's soul once they touch it) was probably the mirror that LilPip looked at in Fillydelphia when she saw herself as a bloody raider. Did anyone else see this? Is this actually a connection?
ReplyDelete@Sindri
ReplyDelete._. wat.
@Unknown
Sure is! Right before Pinkamena touches the mirror, she calls her secretary:
“There’s a mirror in my office that isn’t supposed to be here. Call somepony to pick it up.”
“Yes ma’am. Where is it supposed to be?”
“I don’t care. Take it to one of the FunFarms or something. Just get rid of it!”
@silentcartoSweet! Never thought of myself an observant type but this story is just so good that I'm trying to pick and prod at all the ideas. It slows my reading significantly (It's been about a month and a half since i started reading). While trying to avoid spoilers, I am often seeing how sad the ending is and how some people are blown away from it. Should I really be looking forward to it that much or is this type of reaction normal for fans of any book.
ReplyDelete@Unknown
ReplyDeletePart of the reason for the clashing responses to the ending that you have probably read are due to the fact that the story has an Epilogue and an Afterword. The latter, a "Ten Years Later" ending, was posted on Christmas morning, several weeks after the Epilogue.
As a result, there are several people who wrote about their feelings on prior to having seen the ending... and many may have never read the Afterword, having assumed the story was over with the Epilogue. My fault, that.
Hey Kkats, I've started writing my own fic, based off yours. And I was wondering if I could send you the intro and get some feedback on it. I've reviewed it many times and shown it to others, and I would really like to get your feedback on this. I've already asked somber, and I'm going to ask, a friendly hobo. If the answers yes, then how can I send it to you? Email?
ReplyDeleteP.s I forgot to tell somber that it is a side story to urs, and I'm still pending a response.
@captain literal
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, my "things I have to read" list is so ridiculously huge that I cannot take on any more right now. However, I'd encourage you to check out the Fallout: Equestria IRC channel. There are always friendly, helpful FOE fans there you can talk to.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteI understand thanks for letting me know, better than no response at all, somber said yes
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteJust finished the story after 2 weeks of nearly straight reading. And not regretting it at all.
Sir, my hats off to you. One of the most inspirational and heart-warming stories I've ever read. Loved it so much I decided to finally post on EDaily after browsing for the past couple of months. If I wasn't a direhard brony before, your story broke this brony's back.
Thanks once again for the great work!
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteJust finished reading this fic after 5 days... Great fic, I can't describe it enough in words but the ending was slightly bittersweet.
I still don't understand if LittlePip is able to get out of her comatose state or not, might have missed it. My eyes hurt to much near the end there.
Watching the finale right now...
ReplyDeleteWHAT. THE. HAY.
Canterlot is being guarded by a massive forcefield!
Oh God, that has put a pretty dark shadow over such a happy event. It hasn't ruined the episode, but it's definitely put FO:E at the fore-front of my mind
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteCanterlot Forcefield in the season finale.
ReplyDeleteHa, I remember last summer I kept thinking the incoming Season 2 was gonna nullify F:Eq's continuity but its pretty much only been more and more confirmed.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteManly tears were shed through out the reading this masterpiece, I'm so sad for little-pip and all she's been through, I really don't think I've ever connected with a character more. Thank you Kkat...just thank you for writing this
@An angry biker
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome. Thank you!
I cried at the end fully aware that even with the incredible side-fics, I will never read as good a story as I just did. Thank you Kkat. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI SO wanted to get in on the Fallout Equestria book printing, but they never appeared to open it outside of Facebook, and now I am hearing it is now closed!
ReplyDeleteIt this true?
I am so sick of seeing Facebook everywhere. It's an information hole. I refuse to use it. Is there anyone I can contact directly... You know, NOT through Facebook to find out if there is a way to still purchase this book set?
@richfiles
ReplyDeleteHey dude! I do have some news regarding that!
We currently know exactly how many books we are printing and have sent out information to the pre-order list in the group.
However, not all of these people are responding, or are not able to cover the cost of the books, so we have a Waiting List.
Just shoot an email to:
[email protected]
with the subject "Non-Facebook Waiting List" (Will make it easier for us to know how to get a hold of you. :-P).
Include your Full Name and Shipping Information.
If we have extra copies (and at the moment, it looks like we'll have a good few), we'll send you pricing information! :-)
Easily the best FanFic I've ever read, if not one of the best stories. It tells a captivating tale of heroism, love, tolerance, endurance, and friendship. Kkat, like the thousands of other people have said here, thank you for writing such an amazing story. I think if I ever start losing sight of who I am, I'll direct myself to this book, and the friends who stick by me. Once again, thank you.
ReplyDelete1. Littlepip, Bringer of Light...
ReplyDelete2. Piercing the Heavens!
I think it says a lot when I can barely write a single double-spaced page for a novel analysis in Lit & Comp, but I was able to sit down on a whim and go on for 5 about this fic.
ReplyDeleteThank you for writing this. Thank you so much. It's had a huge emotional impact on me.
If at all possible, can somebody upload the TF2 mods to mlptf2mods.com? I managed to get my computer after MegaUpload was taken down

ReplyDeleteFinally finished the book after 3 months of glorious reading yet looking back on the chapters, i can't recollect what happened. Is there a synopsis or detailed summary (Sounds contradicting, I know) that can jog my memory of the plot or events?
ReplyDeleteOh, and also. Any recommendations on a side story? I've heard of Project Horizons which is Kkat approved (?).
ReplyDelete@Sgt_Lolwut
ReplyDeleteProject Horizons is excellently written and a damned good story, at least comparable to the original in most aspects and superior in the opinions of several fans. Be warned that it is significantly... darker though.
@Sgt_Lolwut
ReplyDeleteProject Horizons is excellent, highly recommended if you're prepared to read something rather darker than FOE. That's not to say it lacks humor or anything, but it gets more introspective and psychological where FOE stays on the straight-up heroic side of things. Call it a two point five, maybe three on the Arbu scale.
For the record, the story really kicks in at Chapter 6, so be prepared to read at least that far. Oh, and whatever you do, do not look at ANY fanart until you get to the big spoiler in a chapter somewhere in the 30s. (You'll know it when you see it.)
I've heard good things about FOE: Heroes, too, but I haven't read it myself. Yet.
@Sgt_Lolwut
ReplyDeleteOther side stories I personally recommend include Wings, a relatively short journal-style story, and Pink Eyes, a cute sort of Fo:E-lite tale. I have also heard very good things about Heroes; I was not particularly impressed by the first couple chapters but I've heard that it get's very good from the third on (I plan on reading the entirety as soon as I have time again) and it's typically listed among the "major" side stories.
Holy shit. This. This amazingly wonderful epic and a few other synonyms for awesome story.
ReplyDeleteForever thanks Kkat for sticking it through, you have brought smiles and tears to many many people, including me, and reminded me of the little things that do matter- that shouldn't be taken for granted.
I'll still remember that sonic radboom and more importantly, the sunlight as it hits New Appleloosa- those feelings reminds me again to go out and enjoy the sunny day.
The characters are beautiful, and most importantly, real. The plot is complex but not too much- the history and background is so breathtakingly detailed and heart wrenching.
I've finally finished reading- after 2 weeks on and off and I'm going to miss it. Hopefully not so much once I start playing Fallout 3 =)
Fun fact: did you know if Fallout Equestria was printed in one book- at over 600k words- it would rank as around the 7th longest novel that had ever been published?
@queen_tiria
ReplyDeleteIt's not a fair comparison. The entire Harry Potter series clocks in at over a million words; most stories of this length are broken up into separate books instead of published as one gigantic novel.
Yeah, the print project has actually split it into five volumes, as per Kkat's request.
ReplyDeleteIn the realm of fun facts and book formats:
ReplyDeleteThe length of the story is not too surprising when you consider that Fallout: Equestria was written in the format of a serialized novel.
Serialized novels are novels produced chapter-by-chapter, often with the chapters ending in a cliffhanger to bring the reader back when the next chapter is published. The first such novel (at least according to my studies) is On Thousand and One Nights, which included the seventy-plus "chapter" story of Aladdin.
Serialized novels were most popular during the Victorian era (starting with The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens). The modern development of internet publishing has brought back the serialized novel.
(This has be paralleled in television by the development of series with multi-year story arcs, where each episode becomes like a chapter in a serialized novel. The first television show to dare to use this format was J. Michael Straczynski's Babylon 5. When deciding how to break up Fallout: Equestria for fan publishing, I looked to the Babylon 5 "seasons" for a model.)
By nature of their format and design, serialized novels are often extremely complex, with numerous sub-plots, and they tend to be very long. Comparing Fallout: Equestria to normal-format novels is, as silentcarto suggests, not quite fair. The longest published serialized novel, to my knowledge, was War & Peace.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteOh, that's an interesting comparison! I guess a serialized novel would also have that dynamic of seeing the response to each episode while the story is still being written.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteAccording to these sites: Wikipedia and Equestria Daily GDocs Fanfic archive:
War and Peace: 587,287 words.
Fallout Equestria: 603,395 words.
The absolute longest novel ever written is the seven volume french novel In Search of Lost Time which is estimated at 1.2 million words long.
Of note is Project Horizons, which is currently at 808,750 words. It's currently sectioned into three volumes on it's Index Page The author, Somber, estimates that he is approximately two thirds through the story, which makes a story based off of and heavily inspired by your work, Kkat, potentially the longest piece of fiction ever written.
Somber would really like to hear what you think of his story, Kkat. Seeing as you're both world-shatteringly great authors of the internet-future and all, it would be amazing if the two of you had a chat together.
@Derpmind
ReplyDeleteThat's the longest conventional novel ever formally published. There have been pieces of "experimental fiction" for example that go on for billions of words, but most of those words are the same one repeated over and over again for thousands of pages.
And in the fanfic category, you have things like the 1.4 million word "Yu-Gi-Oh! Forever," "The Dangerverse" at nearly 1.3 million (over 2M if you include supplemental material), and "Shinji and Warhammer 40K" is at 784K so far. "Undocumented Features" has been updating steadily since 1991; as of 2008 it had 20 megabytes of text, coming out to roughly four million words.
@Sindri
ReplyDeleteThat "experimental fiction" stuff sounds excessively ridiculous. I couldn't find any word-counts for fanfiction, and I haven't ever heard of the other stuff. Is there a page that talks about this stuff please?
Sorry I got that stuff wrong, my bad.
@Derpmind
ReplyDeleteThe wiipedia wordcount page that I suspect you got your information from used to have a separate "controversial/self-published" table below the main one, with counts for experimental fiction, novel sequences separated into volumes, and other things that don't quite fit the definition they were using. It was removed a couple months ago, shortly after FoE and Project Horizons were added. The wordcounts I list from fanfics mostly come from ffnet, with some from Tvtropes listings when I got lazy or the format was confusing.
@Sindri
ReplyDeleteWow. I just looked over the talk section for that Wikipedia page. Some people really didn't like pony fiction being included.
One of the people in that discussion argued that Fallout: Equestria could warrant it's own Wikipedia page. I'd actually love to see that. It could include references to the audiobook project and links to many of the popular side stories as well as the side stories compilation document.
Wonder how long it would last though, considering some of the sentiment seen in that talk.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteHaters gonna hate?
I'd put the page up myself, but I try to avoid contact with the more... enthusiastic wiki editors. And ponies seem to set them off more than anything else I've seen in a long while. I think that between our own wiki, tvTropes, and a gradual invasion of almost every general art and discussion venue on the internet, we're doing well enough without.
Hello if you don't mind me asking can you make a sequel maybe based in a different universe with the same characters or maybe just a sequel just continuing what happened its really a great story and i find the closer i get to the end the sadder i get knowing it will end. I have grown to love the characters and really everything about the story. BUT ITS GOT SO MANY VIEWS! SO MUCH THAT I HAVE SEEN IT ON OTHER WEBSITES AND ITS EVEN GOT ITS OWN WIKI.http://falloutequestria.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout:_Equestria_Wiki AND ITS ALL OVER YOUTUBE!!!!! Look I have grown to love the characters and really everything about the story. PLEASE MAKE ANOTHER!!! on a side note is there any way to pm you?
ReplyDeleteAH now i know why i could not comment before the discussion board moved no wonder lol.
ReplyDeleteoh wait i could just email you lol.
ReplyDelete@Sindri,@Kkat
ReplyDeleteI hate to say this, but I think it is my fault it got removed in the first place. I tried to put it at the bottom of the Fallout series page as an influenced piece of work, but an editor debated the entry. So, I we debated for a bit, and the last thing he said was along the lines of: "That shouldn't even be on the Longest Novels page", which then prompted a large discussion on the Longest Novels page, leading to the deletion of all the "other" works. I can't believe I did that.
@randomperson
ReplyDeleteKkat has declared that all are free to write their own side stories, recursive fanfics, etc. However, none will be declared canon (and Seth won't be giving them their own posts on EqD [with the exceptions of Project Horizons and Pink Eyes], instead lumping them together into a single unsorted, unfiltered, rarely updated "side story" post). So far Kkat has been vague as to future writing plans; as I understand it she's going to spend a significant period reading other people's work before writing again, and is not yet sure what her next story will be or whether she'll ever return to Fallout: Equestria.
If you're looking for more to read, there are many high quality stories in the same universe, several of which have already been named and linked higher on this page.
@ketchup504
Like I said, I try to avoid dealing with the wikipedia editors. Many of them are... overenthusiastic.
I prefer to stick to less formal wikis.
@Sindri
ReplyDeleteAny that get big and famous enough get their own page. FoE: Heroes got it's own page a couple months ago.
I want to start by saying that I absolutely love this story, Kkat. As soon as I started to read I thought it would be fun to read it aloud on YouTube, but then I noticed that you have audio book links-including one on YouTube, only neither of them are finished. If you would let me I'd like to do my own reading of them to upload on my own channel. You could link them if you like them (and if you let me at all) but I don't expect you to, this is just something I would like to have on my channel. I don't want to start without your permission, though. If you need it, my email is [email protected].
ReplyDelete@Unknown
ReplyDeleteScorch_Mechanic is doing the official audiobook. But anyone is welcome to try reading the story, or parts of it, on YouTube. I've heard some really good ones.
Thank you for asking.
I've been re-reading FO:E, probably my favorite story among any I've read, and now I'm seeing everything differently.
ReplyDeleteThe book reads in a different way in parts- like you imagine Littlepip telling the story at the end- if you've already read it: and you catch a lot of foreshadowing that is easily missed the first time through.
Just saying: This story is even better than I thought it was on the first read.
Out of curiosity...
ReplyDeleteHas anyone seen/written a FoE sidestory based off the Buffalo Lands? Been toying with the idea of writing or at least outlining a story in that area, but if anyone else has written or is writing one, it'd be nice to read theirs first.
Thank you for a heart-wrenching, touching and awesome post-apoc story. It's been a while since I was reading something that evoked so many reactions.
ReplyDeleteKKat ah dun had ta say thank ya so much fer writin' this here peace o' art.
ReplyDeleteNever in ma life had ah enjoyed a work of literature as much as ah did win' ah read Fallout: Equestria.
No book, show, or story has ever bin' able ta induce so many emotions in me; Happiness, depression, love, pain, and utter laughter from all the orgasm comments...heheh
Ah just wish there could be a bit more ta this story...ah mean, ah really wanna read some o' them spin offs, but ah think ah'd be too heart broken too.
Ah've grown incredibley attached ta the characters of this amazing work of fiction, specifically ta Littlepip. Ah found maself comparin maself ta her in many o' ways...ah could just well, relate ta her ah guess ya can say...ah'm just a bit broken up that it seems she'll never be able ta physically be with the love of her life ever again, for what ah assume (couldn' really tell if the visit that Homage made ta her had Pip git out of that coma or not)...ah dunno, ah just really wanted things ta turn out in the best for her, after all she's been through, ah think she deserves it...
alright now ah'm just rantin' out, heheh...
Thanks again for this amazing work of yer's, best thing ah ever dun read.

ReplyDeleteIn the middle of the night, a small black dot appeared, floating over an inconspicuous rock in the middle of nowhere. A slender humanoid popped out of the wormhole, and walked over to the rock. After making sure no one was watching, he turned his hand into liquid stone, stuck it inside, and pulled it back out with a Pipbuck. Gripping the device on one end, holding it by the base with his other hand, he pumped the Pipbuck as if it was a gun bolt attached to his arm. An identical Pipbuck popped out of the side of his arm, which he caught with his foot, then tossed it back into his left hand. He replaced the original Pipbuck. He popped a few plates off of it, peering into the insides. Nodding to himself, he hopped back through the black dot and sealed the pathway behind him.
Hey Kkat, is there any way for me to contact you? I've got some questions and a small request (which shouldn't involve any work on your part). I can't seem to find a single piece of contact info. Sorry if you've provided it somewhere, and thanks, especially if you see this and reply.

ReplyDeleteNot cool guys, not cool
@WaffleSmart
ReplyDeleteGraah... haters... @_@
@Adder1
ReplyDeleteOh, it's gone. I meant that we should have put that on ponywiki, not wikipedia...
Could the original author of Fallout Equestria please email me at [email protected]
ReplyDeleteI have a proposition for you concerning an overlap story i would like to write and would like to talk to you about whether or not you would allow this, i have 3 chapters completed for you to read so you can get an idea of the story.
@DrVVatson
ReplyDeleteKkat's official stance is that anyone can write their own side stories based on her work. None of them will be considered canon. None of them (hundreds if not thousands thus far) have received direct input from Kkat, nor are they likely to in the future. If you wish to know more on the subject feel free to look through the archives of comments here, the side story compilation posts, and the three which have received their own pages here on EqD (Project Horizons, Pink Eyes, and Heroes). Not to mention the many, many pages of Fo:E side stories on fimfiction.
@eppaljack
ReplyDeleteEasiest way to contact me is on the Fallout: Equestria community's IRC channel. (You can find it through the Fallout: Equestria Resource website.) Alternately, you could send me a message on FIMfiction.
First of all, let me just say this is one of the best stories I have ever read. I don't think I've ever been more heavily invested in a group of characters before. Now after thinking about it a little bit I realize that the song This is War by 30 Seconds to Mars fits scarily well with the story. Sorry if this has been posted before, but I just wanted to share. Here's the lyrics:
ReplyDelete30 Seconds to Mars-This is War
A warning to the people
The good and the evil
This is war
To the soldier, the civillian
The martyr, the victim
This is war
It's the moment of truth and the moment to lie
The moment to live and the moment to die
The moment to fight, the moment to fight, to fight, to fight, to fight
To the right, to the left
We will fight to the death
To the Edge of the Earth
It's a brave new world from the last to the first
To the right, to the left
We will fight to the death
To the Edge of the Earth
It's a brave new world
It's a brave new world
A warning to the prophet, the liar, the honest
This is war
To the leader, the pariah, the victim, the messiah
This is war
It's the moment of truth and the moment to lie
The moment to live and the moment to die
The moment to fight, the moment to fight, to fight, to fight, to fight
To the right
To the left
We will fight to the death
To the edge of the earth
It's a brave new world
From the last to the first
To the right
To the left
We will fight to the death
To the edge of the earth
It's a brave new world
It's a brave new world
It's a brave new world
I do believe in the light
Raise your hands up to the sky
The fight is done
The war is won
Lift your hands
Towards the sun
Towards the sun
Towards the sun
Towards the sun
The war is won
It's the moment of truth and the moment to lie
The moment to live and the moment to die
The moment to fight, the moment to fight, to fight, to fight, to fight
To the right
To the left
We will fight to the death
To the edge of the earth
It's a brave new world
From the last to the first
To the right
To the left
We will fight to the death
To the edge of the earth
It's a brave new world
It's a brave new world
It's a brave new world
A brave new world
The war is won
The war is won
A brave new world

Finally finished the Kindle version of FO:E today, and as a fan of MLPFiM, FO3/FO:NV, and fanfic in general, I want to mention that this story, in my opinion, deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as epics like the great-grandfather of all fanfiction, Undocumented Features, for example (and that probably shows my age and/or length of time in the fandom).
ReplyDeleteKkat, this story was profoundly well written. I feared I would wear out my iPad's battery running it all the way down so many times, because I couldn't put it down in between reading sessions (and couldn't get back to a charger ;)). I have written fanfictions of my own and regular fiction stories as well, and reading this brought me back to the times I was doing that, years ago.
As a person who has played through FO:3 and FO:NV several times apiece, I'm here to tell you that you ingeniously wove everything from the games, from the basic storyline to the world elements down to the tiniest quirks of each game into your story. The references and "cameos" were beautifully done.
I don't have the time or energy to read 8700+ comments in two blogger posts, so I may (probably definitely will) be repeating things that were said by others, and if so I apologize.
- I'm a little put off that you never got to where Rainbow Dash ended up (unless I missed it). I was fearing at one point that she would have been in charge of the Enclave but I was pleased to see that didn't pan out.
- The inclusion of Homage as the voice of the wasteland, having a personal relation to the main character (and group), was a nice touch. Something that would have been fun to play with in the games (though perhaps not to the same level Littlepip and Homage got to :)).
- Does the Afterword imply that Littlepip can take time out of the chamber every now and then? I got the impression that Homage and 'pip get together in person on the former's birthday each year. If so, IMO that drags a melancholy ending back to the positive side of things.
- Of course, I'm a little down that the story had to end, but I had a similar long, rambling story of my own ongoing and realized at some point it needed to finish. I completely understand - but the storytelling is of such quality that I yearn for more!
Thanks for sharing this with us. Now I'll head off to the side stories and see what I can get into in there! :)
@Jay911
ReplyDelete-No, Dash's fate was never explicitly stated. But, seeing as she was never seen again after the recording with Gilda... (My personal theory is that she set off a plasma grenade while grappling with Gilda to make sure the Enclave could never get her head. It's the kind of thing she would do.)
-Pip can indeed leave the stasis chamber. She's not in any shape to face the stresses of the Wasteland, but it's not like she's on a countdown timer either. She's "getting sick could kill you" fragile, not "your heart is failing" fragile.
-Project Horizons Project Horizons Project Horizons.
@Baloneyeagle
ReplyDeleteYeah, "This is War" is actually on the 'official soundtrack' for FOE... which is to say, Kkat's background music for writing. There's a reason it fits so well!
Just really random, but I was going over the FoE wiki and found something that kerfaffled me. It mentioned a canon conflict in a side-story about how "in FoE, it was discovered that Rarity was in love with Fluttershy-", and I don't recall that at all in the fic.
ReplyDeletePlus, adding that with the statement of "all of the ministry mares were straight, bar from Dash when drunk, then she was bisexal" from Kkat, I'm wondering: Is this a mistake in the wiki, if so, should it be changed?
Thank you for writing this magnificent piece of work Kkat. I have never played any Fallout game, but your story got me hooked pretty hard.
ReplyDeleteI spent two full weeks reading it and -probably- failed an exam or two beacause of it, but I regret NOTHING!
@Kim
ReplyDeleteWhat.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that never happened. IIRC we only have AJ's word that they were all heterosexual, but I'm pretty sure that Rarity and Fluttershy were never even implied to be in a relationship.
@Sindri: Yeah, I was also "derp?" when I read that, but it's in the "canon conflicts" of PH on the wiki.
ReplyDeleteAnd actually, I asked Kkat, thus the "from Kkat" mention at my statement :P But yeah, I can't recall at all it being in the story. Only that they have a somewhat touching farewell, even if I thought that bit was a bit of a no-brainier.
Greetings, KKAT, from russian brony DerpAnt
ReplyDeleteSeveral months ago i started reading you legend... wait fo it..dary, legendary fanfic, and I decided to publish it. Russian community has already finished translation (http://notabenoid.com/book/21613/), so several enthusiastic bonies and I thought you wouldn't mind if we make a book, so russian bronies with bad english could read it.
The book will in 2 or 3 parts, and it will be non-comercial and ~500 copies.
Your opinion is very important, so if you don't approve, we won't publish it.
@Anton Volnov
ReplyDeleteSo long as no profit is made from the book, then I would be honored and delighted.
I added Fallout: Equestria to Goodreads. I am currently on page 28 and loving it so far (and I HATE novels, but this one is good).

Dang it, used the wrong profile the first time. Anyway, I added Fallout: Equestria to Goodreads. I am currently on page 28 and loving it so far (and I HATE novels, but this one is good).

QUESTION FOR KKAT: how on earth were you able to write 600,000 words in such short time? What's your daily word count and what's your method of writing?
@Baloneyeagle
ReplyDeleteThis happens to be the best animated PMV for that song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKnTmU088e0
@thedragonchild
ReplyDeleteI'm going to respectfully disagree. Overuse of the additive crossfade effect, and it flickers the images so rapidly I can't make out what's supposed to be on the screen half the time.
This is best music video. ^_^
Okay, I skipped a baker's dozen of chapters, I'll admit that, but I had no trouble understanding the last chapter. Here's my paraphrasing:
ReplyDeleteLilpip: "Hey you guys! You know that thing I've been trying to do almost the entire novel? You know, finding the elements and doing that super-spell thing?
Yeah, I never did it.
But you know what I did do?
I MADE THE DESERT HOTTER AND DRIER."
Your Readers: LILPIP, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED
@R10t Pol1ce
ReplyDeleteWe meet again Anon.
Yo, Kkat, are you planning on writing anything new, FoE or otherwise, any time soon ?
ReplyDelete@Kkat
ReplyDeleteThis came up in a thread on 4chan, and I'm genuinely curious;
How far into writing the infamous "Hospital Horror" scene did you get before you stopped yourself and thought, "Wait. What?" Or did that even happen?
Were there any versions where more than just an *attempted* tentacle-rape of Lilpip took place?
Just curious.
@R10t Pol1ce
ReplyDeleteSooo... you here just to brag about not actually reading the story and talk about rape?
@Max Harryson
ReplyDeletePossibly. There is another project that is eating my free time right now, but I do have a story I've been wanting to write.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteOoh, what's the project? Is it something we can see?
@Sindri
ReplyDeleteOkay, that was kind of rude of me to openly admit I hadn't read the entire story.
But, yes, I would love to talk about >rape. At least insomuch as it specifically pertains to this My Little Pony fanfiction, which is what this comment thread was created to discuss.
I read Fallout Equestria over the course of a month to avoid plowing through it too quickly. But in that time, I felt a variety of emotions, ranging from anger, laughter, sadness, love, and a whole bunch of others I can't name at the moment. Unlike some of the printed novels I've read, this was a story I looked forward to reading each day. Needless to say, this was a very well done story, Kkat.
ReplyDelete5 stars out of 5. And even that score, I feel, doesn't do this enough justice. Thanks for the epic journey.
Damnit... when a post nucular war world filled with slavery, death, and destruction sounds better than the real world, i realize i dont have anything going on...
ReplyDelete@Sindri
ReplyDeleteCertainly. Dash on over to the Fallout: Equestria Resource forums. ^.^
@Spatial Observer
ReplyDeleteThank you very much. And you are welcome. I am very happy you enjoyed the journey.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteIf you don't feel comfortable answering my question here, you can send PM to R10tPol1ce on DeviantArt.
To restate, I was just curious as to whether the "Hospital Horror" scene changed in any significant way from rough draft to final version.
@thedragonchild
ReplyDeleteHow did I write so much so quickly? I honestly have no idea.
I can tell you, however, that I spent about 40 hours a week on the story, a quarter of which was time spent in proofreading sessions with my editors and proofreaders. I would usually have a couple days out of the week that I would set aside as my writing days, and I would work at least ten hours doing nothing but writing. The rest of the week, I would write for just a few hours.
I would take a couple days to digest the comments and prep for the next chapter.
Towards the latter third of the story, I would regularly take a week or more off from writing to prevent myself from getting burned out. But I didn't allow myself to go to long without writing, since the hardest part is always starting.
LOOK OUT LONG POST AHEAD, ha!
ReplyDeleteFinally finished the entire thing after days of slacking off at work and taking extended breaks to the bathroom just to read it on my iphone so I could find out what happens next
I think I saw only a couple of itty bitty teensy weensy mistakes (like we're all perfect, right?), like when you said I think it was, "My muscles arched" and I think what you meant to say was ached but it doesnt matter at this point, lol.
My GOD (or should I say Celestia, ha!) you are a true master of characterization and storytelling. Nothing Ernest Hemingway ever wrote moved me like Lilpip's journey through this broken and dying world. And my GOD, Steelhooves... having to live for 200 years with that guilt and pain... and him finding out Applejack was pregnant and he wasnt there for her and he never even MET his beautiful baby...
And then, of course, his death! My GOD, it was just so sudden and unexpected, but I guess thats how real life is sometimes, ha! Just ask my grandma Janelle... ;_;
... my GOD I didn't know I could cry that much about fictional damn characters! Ha! Damn you for making me cry so much, lol!
So, now that I'm all finished, I just have a couple of questions.
1. I know you get asked about the ending a lot, and youve probly answered this before, but was that the "Gardens of Equestria" spell that Lilpip activated in the SPP control room?
2. I have a question about YOU. *takes deep breath* As a woman, have you ever felt discriminated against for going against our society's archaic views of femininity and writing a darker type of story filled with gore and violence, death, ...explosions and gunfire (lol), and yes, even sexual themes such as rape (Xenith, omg ;_;) and implied sexual abuse of children (F U RAIDERS! omg I was so happy when LP effing killed the sh** out of those VERY BAD PONIES lol) all while interacting with and being what some would say a DEFINING part of a fandom HEAVILY dominated by males??
3. Have you read any of The Hunger Games series of novels, or have you heard of them, or what I'm asking here is WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE HUNGER GAMES, KKAT??
Thank you and God bless!
@sausage145
ReplyDeleteHah... hahahahahaha! "Long post"! HEE!
Sorry to laugh, but this thread was the official home of having to split your post into three parts to keep from overrunning the maximum comment length. :)
To answer your first question:
Gardens of Equestria requires the Elements to activate, so no; Pip simply took over the SPP Hub, giving her absolute control over Equestria's weather.
Gardens was fired some time later, after Calamity, Velvet and Homage located the Bearers of Generosity and Magic. But that, as they say, is another story for another time.
@sausage145
ReplyDeleteThank you. I'm very happy you enjoyed Fallout: Equestria so much and that it moved you.
As for your questions, the answer to all three is no. (Yes, I have heard of the Hunger Games; but no, I have never read any of them.) silentcarto explains the SPP and the Gardens of Equestria above.
You're welcome, and God bless you as well.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteJesus Fucking Christ, never thought I'd say this, but I finally fucking finished this monster. Goddamn, Kkat, you fond of takin' the scenic route, or what?
No disrespect of course! Although I might feel a bit peeved at you for fuckin' devouring my goddamn life for the past two fucking weeks, but that's a compliment if I've ever given one!
One of my buddies from work wouldn't shaddap about this "Fallout: Equestria", and curiosity got the best of me and... Christ on His Cross what a ride. I mean, I know this has been said a million times (probably more than that) but if you came up to me a couple weeks ago and told me that I'd be leaving work early just so I could race home to read the next chapter of a goddamn My Little Pony fanfiction, I wouldve popped you in the fuckin' jaw, not even fuckin' kidding. I mean, I'm a man's man, I wear a leather jacket that was made to keep B-29 Superfortress pilots in WWII nice n comfy while they were dropping ordnance on Nazi Germany from 29,000 feet, I drive a Harley, I own three semi-automatic firearms, I vote Republican, and I point and laugh at Prius's whenever I pass 'em on the interstate, and this goddamn story... goddamnit... Lilpip... her struggle with her sexuality, her faith in the Goddesses, her conscience, and of course the Equestrian Wasteland itself... goddamn, girl you put me in a lot of awkward situations tryin to explain to the missus what in the blue blazes of hell I was cryin about... Ha, I regret nothing!
And oh yeah, you probably could've guessed it by now, but while my love for Lilpip knows no bounds, my favorite character was Calamity! Him and his brother was priceless! XD Reminded me of me and my brothers! XD
But I gotta ask ya something I've been wondering: As a man, did you find it difficult writing form the perspective of a female protagonist, especially when it came to her sexuality, like Lilpip's romantic attraction to other characters, the way she perceived the opposite sex (it almost seemed like you were overcompensating at points, like with the way she just absolutely freaked out when she was in the memory of a male pony) and even basic biological responses - at one point, Lilpip wakes up involuntarily sexually aroused, and proceeds to masturbate to relieve the urge, which just struck me as a classically male behavior, although theres exceptions to every rule, heh - and another example, at one point she gets bucked in her private parts by a stallion, and reacts exactly like she had just been kicked in the ballsack - so, just to restate my question, did you ever have any particular difficulty writing a story from the perspective of a female character, and having it still be... believable, I guess is the word I'm looking for?
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read that enormous fuckin' wall of text up there (sorry!), and I'll be goddamned if I'm not going to start watching MLP FIM just because of this story!
@RockySucksIzGod
ReplyDeleteYou don't need to make a new account and personality every time you post a comment.
@WaffleSmart
ReplyDeleteGood catch, WaffleSmart. Thanks!
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteYou had editors and proofreaders? That is interesting, very interesting. I don't use editors for my fanfictions. That is a lot of hours spent, and you are right about starting up again. I took a long break from my book and I can't seem to get back on the writing wagon.
@silentcarto
ReplyDeleteThat was actually good. I didn't expect to like it. I'm glad you posted that, I've got a new video to add to my favorites. The Brony community is the best one I've been in and i'm glad to be a part of it.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteI just want to say this story you told has been one of the greatest story I 've ever had the privilege of reading. No book has ever made me this close to tearing up, 'cept for Harry Potter book 6 where Dumbledore passed away.
I sincerely apologize if you have already touched on this, as I...am having problem going through thousands of comments(stopped at the first 600), but will you ever let us know the exact details of Littlepip's eight memory orbs?
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteEven though sausage-rocky methods seem... overstated, he has a point. Littlepip behavior sometimes seemed out of place, and even though they could be explained, it still seems weird to me. I suppose that lots of your editors and proofreaders are male and they might have influenced you, but it still, still seems somehow wrong. Care to explain?
@thedragonchild
ReplyDeleteIndeed. I didn't have them for from the beginning; they joined on voluntarily after reading the first chapters. I suspect you can tell in the story when I started getting proofreading help.
@FireEel
Thank you. And no, the contents of the eighth orb were never explicitly stated. I think it's better left to the imagination. Don't you?
@Ktooosiek
Instead of an explanation, how about an observation? Quite a few people have stated that they feel Littlepip's personality or elements of her mindset are "too male". Of those people, every single one of them... ALL of them... have been male. (And most of them have been in their teens or very early 20s.)
What does this say about how young men perceive and stereotype women?
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteHi Kkat, thanks for replying!
I meant all eight orbs in general, not just the eighth. And yes, I agree the eighth orb could stay...private for Littlepip and Homage, being such a precious and intimate memory.
I was referring to orbs 2 - 7. I understand that Littlepip had to plan on taking out the goddess, remove Tenpony Tower's balefire bomb, take a Party Time Mint' al and other stuff, but it would have been really interesting to know the details of how she went about those two days. We saw orb one was how Littlepip scolded herself. But what about the rest?
@Ktooosiek
ReplyDeleteTo me Littlepip always came across as female. She just doesn't talk about it much, what with having interests other than being female. Like, say, surviving the Wasteland, trying to keep her friends alive and maybe something approximating sane, and then actually managing to change the world for the better. Were you disappointed that she didn't spend more time in the kitchen, perhaps? Did you expect her to whine about the ruination of her mane every time she struggled for her life against overwhelming odds? Or have you just never read anything with a realistic female protagonist and thus automatically assume that anyone other than a mindless damsel in distress must be internally masculine?
@FireEel
ReplyDeleteI believe this falls under the unspoken plan guarantee rule. If the writer tells you the plan before the event, and it succeeds, that's boring. You're just going through the same steps twice, and there's no real tension; in order to keep a good story you need to either not reveal the planning stage or make it all go horribly wrong near the beginning of the process. I suppose we could see more details after the fact, but the orbs would be mostly things we already know: several long scenes of Littlepip giving people their personal instructions and triggers, her setting up events that we saw the end result of... it would be a whole lot of writing for something we've mostly already seen and have enough information to deduce almost all of. Unless it went into deep enough detail to tell you things like the exact argument that she used to convince Red Eye, but that's the kind of thing that should be kept hidden in any case; for the plot it's enough to know she used Party Time Mint-als, and if we actually saw a version of the conversation it would tend to ruin things because Kkat would need to be on drugs that haven't been invented yet to make the argument 'Pip did, and anything less would make Red Eye look bad for agreeing.
@Sindri
ReplyDeleteWell said. Canterlot is a good counterexample -- "As soon as the rain stops, we'll fly in, land in front of the MoI, get the book, and get out. It'll take an hour or two, tops." Yeah, that plan lasted all of about thirty seconds...
@Sindri
ReplyDelete"Were you disappointed that she didn't spend more time in the kitchen, perhaps?"
Stop. Don't go around calling people sexist unless you want to start an argument.
@Sindri
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense in a kinda way. I guess...it's because I didn't want Littlepip's story to end for me. I wanted to see more.
Hence knowing the details of orbs 2-7 would help extend the story a little for me, even if I already knew roughly what she planned to do.
@FireEel
ReplyDeleteRead Project Horizons...
That is all I shall say.
hi, kkat! Your story was truly the best thing I have ever read. no movie or book Iv'e ever read has ever come close to how incredible Fo: E is. the ending made me so sad
ReplyDelete*SPOILER STARTS HERE*
littlepip may have stopped the enclave, but she sacrifices enjoying her victory and, basically, life by having to put herself into the SPP mainframe to keep the enclave from regaining a foothold.
*SPOILER ENDS HERE*
that said, are you going to make a true ending where littlepip can finally leave and live the rest of her life? y'know, a HAPPY ending?
@Bruiserdemon
ReplyDeleteIt was pretty much covered in the epilogue; she can leave whenever she wants now that things are stabilized, but after all the abuse she took over the course of the story her lifespan outside of the pod is limited. So she comes out for special occasions and to play with Homage, and otherwise spends the next few (hundred) years watching over the Wasteland, seeing new civilization built on the remains of the old, and continuing to help people. Sounds to me like about as close to a "happily ever after" as can be allowed in the setting.
I hadn't read Fallout: Equestria, but since it's summer and I have a bunch of free time, I figure, why not? And after reading up to chapter six, my reaction is this:
ReplyDeleteWhat the hay does the author have against cats???
Kkat, I'm finding it hard to think of words to express how I feel about this story of yours, but I'd like to say that after I finished it - Which was a long journey! - I felt different.. In a really good way, having read this piece.
ReplyDeleteThough it is fictional, it has given me food for thought, and there's many aspects in it I'd like to keep with me, those that Littlepip herself got to embrace throughout her travels. I'm still wondering what orb #8 had to show..
Thank you
Is there like a forum or something where we can discuss FOE?
ReplyDelete@FireEel Indeed there is. It's the FoE Resource Forums. Handily enough, there's also an IRC chat for discussing FoE-related subjects in real time. ^^
ReplyDeletehttp://forum.fallout-equestria.com/index.php
Bah, apparently I'm the only one who remembered to post this here: "Yesterday" the One Man's Pony Ramblings blog posted a review of Fallout: Equestria. It's definitely worth everyone's time. The blogger is goes very in-depth, and there's a bunch of comments too.
ReplyDelete@Derpmind
ReplyDelete...I messed up the link. Sorry.
This is the review.
IT'S HAPPENING

I hate Grimdark.
ReplyDeleteI hate Crossovers.
I have never played Fallout, nor am I inclined to start playing it.
I am extremely likely to get biased results in this thread, but given that you all have read it, I must ask you: will it be worth it for me to read Fallout: Equestria? Keep in mind that I'm going to need some very convincing reasoning to get me to take reading it into consideration, so the answer "OMG YES!!!" will only hinder my likelihood of reading it.
@Chanceus Moore
ReplyDeleteIn my experience, most "grimdark" stories are pointless gorn-fests designed either to shock the reader or draw in the same immature or disturbed individuals who keep the Saw franchise going.
Meanwhile most crossovers are hamfisted, poorly characterized clusterfucks used as an excuse to collide two worlds which should never have met.
Fallout Equestria is none of these things. It's an engaging, realistic story of hope, love, adversity, etc. that happens to be set in a blasted wasteland which was once Equestria.
Oh, and some bits might be funnier if you get a reference, but knowledge of the Fallout series is completely unnecessary.
Basically, 90% of grimdark may be crap, 90% of crossovers might be crap, but 90% of everything is crap. And this is definitely in the remaining ten.
@Chanceus Moore
ReplyDeleteWhat Sindri said - this isn't just a fanfiction, it is a well-written story that in the opinion of many would be an excellent published book if not for the obvious copyright issues..
What I'd add to this is that you keep in mind that you can start reading a chapter or two - test the water in a sense. If you enjoy it, then by all means read on. If you don't then odds are that you won't enjoy it (but not necessarily). Don't feel obliged to finish it once you start it if you find that it isn't the type of story for you.
@Chanceus Moore
ReplyDeleteUnlike most crossovers, this isn't ponies in Fallout or Fallout visiting Ponyville. Rather, it's an extremely skillful extrapolation of FiM into a Fallout-like universe. It doesn't require any familiarity with existing Fallout properties.
> not sexist

ReplyDelete@Sindri
ReplyDeleteI'm debating it now. However, the reason why I don't like Grimdark is not because it's a gorn-fest (or is that a typo for gore-fest? I can't tell. I'll assume gorn is gore and porn combined) but because most Grimdark fics have an unbalanced level of emotion. I don't want to read something that has an over-all negative vibe to it. There needs to be an equal amount of positive emotion to counter it. If Fallout: Equestria lacks this quality, I may have to turn it down then. I'm willing to give it a try though.
My dislike for Crossovers may have been a BS excuse. Actually, more or less a lie. I love Dr. Whooves, as well as...um...crap, I can't think of any other examples. There are two reasons why I would likely dislike THIS Crossover though. One is because I have never played the game. I am aware now that I don't need to have played any Fallout to understand the novel, but since there are going to be references (actually, more likely Easter Eggs), I'm going to feel really left out when they're brought out. The other reason is because...well, I did some research, and...well, a video game set in a post-apocalyptic world crossed over with a show about ponies living in a very happy and peaceful world seems incredibly unorthodox. But if this story REALLY isn't a "hamfi[e]sted, poorly characterized [clusterfuck] used as an excuse to collide two worlds which should never have met," then I'll take you word for it and overlook the reason.
What I do look for in a story is plot, character development, and most importantly, emotion and depth. I'm probably going to read a chapter or two to see what it's like, but I will likely need more assurance before reading the whole thing.
Hope you don't mind the long response.
@MichaelJAW
ReplyDeleteIt kills me to do this because most of the time I have to finish a story I started, but fine. I'll read a chapter or two.
@Chanceus Moore
ReplyDelete"Gorn" is indeed a portmonteau of "gore" and "porn", but it means doing with gore what porn does with sex, rather than strictly combining the two.

ReplyDelete@Chanceus Moore
ReplyDeleteMy recommendation is to read the first six chapters. If you do not like what you are reading, give it a pass.
I recommend this because of substance and quality. Regarding the former, there are several beginning chapters with the protagonist on her own. So in order to get a sense of characterization, you would be best served reading far enough that friendships begin to build. Likewise, while the first chapters set up the hero's journey and lay a lot of groundwork, Chapter Six is were some of the bigger themes and subplots of the story begin to kick in.
Regarding gore and grimdark trappings: the third chapter holds what I consider some of the worst that the story has to offer.
On a technical level, these first chapters are shorter and rougher than the ones which follow. While not bad, these are the chapters before I got my full editing staff and started getting helpful brony feedback, so you are getting the story at its worst on a technical level -- if you find it good enough to read, you can enjoy the fact that the writing will only get better.
Ultimately, only you can decide if the story is right for you. It is definitely not to everyone's tastes. But Fallout: Equestria strives to be so much more than the sum of its tags... and, according to most readers, it succeeds... so I encourage you to give the story a small try before making a decision.
@Chanceus Moore
ReplyDeleteAlso, Fallout: Equestria does NOT have any sex scenes. However, whether or not you consider "oral sex" to count as "sex" factors into that.
I personally think it does, but that might have something to do with the medication I'm on.
@R10t Pol1ce
ReplyDeleteSex happens in the story, it is not shown or discussed at length.
@Chanceus Moore
ReplyDeleteForgive R10tPol1ce. He's a regular troll here with a bizarre sex obsession and a tendancy to make wild claims and threats. He's best just ignored.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteWhat, you mean like this?
http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/2351/ironyk.jpg
@Sindri
ReplyDeleteBut, unless my memory fails me, there *is* totally a part in Kkat's My Little Pony fanfiction (not the infamous chapter 20.5) where a character named Homage is clearly performing oral sex on our narrator when the two are interrupted for whatever reason.
You can't explain that. Like the tides. Or magnets.
Sindri is right. FOE is a world where sex exists. And the characters sometimes engage in it. But Kkat generally keeps this off-screen or vague enough to discount.
ReplyDeleteR10tPol1ce is confusing his "memory" with his "imagination". What he is referring to as an "oral sex" scene is Homage licking Littlepip someplace unspecified that felt good just before a "fade to black". Personally, I like to think it was her Cutie Mark. But that's because I find that mental image intensely cute.
@Vinyla Scratch
ReplyDeleteNah, I'm pretty sure the hug scene I was talking about was past that part, where like Homage + Lilpip were talking about the number of happy moments she could have instead of how long the happy moment could last, and the answer they came up with was "31".
That was the part about which I was typing an internet message on the internet.
And I apologize for sending you that threatening message you linked to in your previous post. I don't know what I was thinking to threaten you like that. :( plz forgive me :(
@R10t Pol1ce
ReplyDeleteFrom what I hear, you showed up on the IRC chat boasting how you could "beat Kkat up" and calling everyone "autistic".
Instead of being sorry because I'm showing people what you're like, try acting like something other than an immature asshole.
I'll forgive when you show signs of growing up. Until then, I'll post that everywhere you give me an excuse to.
@Chanceus Moore
ReplyDeleteWhether you enjoy the story or not, I would be interested to hear your impressions of it once you have read a few chapters. ^.^
@Vinyla Scratch
True, he did. But as much as R10tPol1ce may have brought this on himself, I would ask that you not turn this comments section into a place for attacking people.
Do not feed the trolls and do not be one yourself.
Thank you.
@Vinyla Scratch
ReplyDeleteNo, Vinyl, please, I don't want people to think that I'm the type of crazy person that spends a lot of time thinking up and carefully composing empty but tough-sounding and ultimately unrealistic profanity-laced death threats involving "gorilla warfare", which is the type of covert, low-profile, hit-and-run method of combat observed by zoophiles (scientists who study animals) as being used in the wild most commonly by some of the larger species of African primates (and more recently, a newly-discovered band of Amazonian orangutans that exhibit startlingly aggressive behavior toward humans reminiscent of the rare man-eating lion prides of the Savannah).
plz just forgive & forget vinyl, im begging you! <:(
adn you guys about the "autistic" thing, I just lost my temper when someone made a joke about priests being pedophiles in reference to the ongoing sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church andI got kind of angry because I thought the comment this person made was pretty bigoted and prejudiced towards Catholics.
ReplyDeleteI kno I shouldnt have sunk to there level :((( im a lot more sorry theres so much hate in this wounded world we live circularly live on ;_;
@R10t Pol1ce
ReplyDelete"...so much hate in this wounded world..."
Seriously? Then stop being a hater. Stop trolling FOE. Stop your creepy, sex-obsessed stalking of Kkat (cuz your coming across like you're insanely jealous and have a crush on her that you can't cope with). And stop acting like an asshole to other people.
What people are going to think is that you dish it out but you can't take it. That you fly off the handle and spew crazy bullshit that only you could think is either "carefully composed" or "tough-sounding". And that you're an immature manchild with a serious self-image problem.
Until you grow up, they're gonna be right. So the first step is yours. I'm willing to forgive and forget when you become a better person.
Ain't "be better" kinda the whole theme of Fallout: Equestria?
Please stop feeding the troll.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
@R10t Pol1ce & Vinyla Scratch
ReplyDeleteCould you two please take this somewhere else? Your conversation no longer has any bearing on Fallout: Equestria.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteOkay, here's an on-topic question, and yeah, it's about sex, again, because that's all I think about because I'm a stupid boy:
WHY do you think scenes involving oral sex don't count as "sex scenes"? It is an uncommon stance, is it not?
@R10t Pol1ce
ReplyDeleteOral sex scenes are definitely sex scenes; nobody has ever said there weren't here. But I don't remember any of them in this story unless you're looking at 20.5. There are scenes where sex is discussed in dialogue where appropriate. There are scenes where sex is implied to be a thing that will happen imminently. But a sex scene isn't one where the word comes up, it's a scene in which people are having sex.
Kkat posted in IRC "I don't write any sex scenes", and I, posting as 'Palus' asked another person, "im pretty sure there i8s a scene where homage is going down on lilpip and talking about the number of orgasms she can have as opposed to the duration of the orgasm, and she later says '31!'"
ReplyDeleteThis other person responded, "okay, I will offer the qualification that is depends on your definition of 'explicit sex scene'".
And Kkat posted: "Be definess 'sex scene' as a scene that actually involves sex. And I have not written any 'sex scenes' by that description."
To which I responded, "oral sex is still sex, dude"
And someone else said, "MOVING ON."
Kkat said nothing after that. Presumably because Kkat has better things to do than talk to strangers on the internet about horses having sex, thus setting an example that I think I'm going to follow.
@R10t Pol1ce
ReplyDeleteEverything you just said proves Sindri's point. Is it your goal to make yourself look stupid? Because you're doing a wonderful job of it.
(To anyone else: in case it's not clear, our "Navel Seal sniper" here is once again talking about the lick I mentioned above, which he has mentally melded with other things to invent a scene that never happened. When people tell him that scene never happened, his response is "Well, it happened in my head, so Kkat has to answer for it!" What an idiot.)
@Vinyla Scratch
ReplyDeleteWhether or not it's accurate, throwing around more insults on the internet is kinda pointless and Kkat has already asked you to stop.
@Vinyla Scratch
ReplyDeleteokay, i feel kind of guilty about this. Vinyl, I admit here, to you, that I was fecesicious when i told you I killed 300 Al-Quaeda operatives during my tour of Afghanistan. But my regime DID actualy come under fire from Saddam Mubarak Hussein's republic commandos when my squadron took Istanbul and Kashyyyk during the 2002 invasion of Iran.
@Vinyla Scratch
ReplyDeleteCould you please refrain from starting another flamewar? Haven't you heard of the Navy Seals Copypasta before? R10t Pol1ce is just trying to get on your nerves, and by replying to him with angry comments you're only encouraging him.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteYeah, no problem. Wait a second, 600,000 words? That's more than the Lord of The Rings Trilogy! That's like Game of Thrones and Clash of Kings combined!! This had better be good.
@Chanceus Moore
ReplyDelete603395!
Just wait until you get to Project Horizons; it's 939057 so far and still going strong.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteWait. You say we can put it up elsewhere? Can you put it up on FIMFiction.net, or should someone else do it?
@bobtehbrony
ReplyDeleteNo.
Is there an ebook version I can download for my kindle?
ReplyDelete@Rachel
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Check here:

Found a typo in chapter three.
ReplyDelete"Armor, at lest, shouldn’t be too hard, although I shuddered hard at the thought of putting on a dead pony’s barding..."
'Lest' ought to be 'least', I think.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteGood day. It's a shame I have never commented on the official story page, especially considering how much I adore it. The story, I mean. The page is nice, too. Looking at how warm and appreciative most people here are, I once more have some faith in humanity, though it may be only this community. But still, humanity does consist of communities, doesn't it?
As you already know, and not to repeat myself (although that's what I do best; I wonder if my special talent involves repeating myself), your story has had an immense positive influence on my life.
The most wonderful part of the story was indeed your ability to play with the reader's feelings, but to play not in the way of puppet-puppeteer but in the way of a conductor before an orchestra. Every person is an orchestra, in some way. We do have our thoughts and feelings, which are in constant dissonance. But once a conductor appears, we act in unison. Anything can be a conductor. It can be a warm summer evening spent in the country. It can be a cold winter night spent with a loved one. It can be a child's laughter, or a preacher's prayer. Or it can be a good book. Now I would like to say another 'thank you' to you: for making Fo:E one of the countless conductors of my mind, maybe for a short time, but still an important one.
I literally 'felt' the characters while reading the story. Some memories have become slightly muddled (which means it is high time to reread Fo:E), but I clearly remember feeling sadness and anger, embarrassment and dismay (and happiness, at some point: Littlepip can leave the control pod and physically interact with Homage! Yay!) while reading the story. Not just feeling 'for' the character, or 'instead of' the character. Feeling 'with' the character.
I think there aren't enough thanks in the world to express my gratitude. But I think I can do at least one thing. As one human orchestra to another, I want to say 'thank you' seven times - through music. To my mind, music is a perfect vessel for words, even though it doesn't necessarily include them. Through your story, you gave me inspiration to compose exactly seven songs - my seven 'thank you's. Though the songs are dedicated to the story and its characters, I want you to know that all of them are dedicated to you in the first place. Thank you, Kkat. Thank you seven times.
Here is the link to the playlist with those seven songs, if you have time for fan music, that is:
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5FA62E8A9D5390AC&feature=plcp
And again, thank you.
Typos in Chapter 4.
ReplyDelete"StealthBuck. Invisiblity Spell. One charge."
Invisibility.
"The impressive amount of objects made me wonder if my excursion into Ironshod Firearms hadn’t been worthwhile after all."
This doesn't make much sense, she just found Lil' Macintosh!
Chapter 6
ReplyDelete“That there back one, it’s called the caboose.” He pointed a hoof towards the red car in the rear. “That has the breaks. Y’see, when we go up the mountain... ...But when we go down the mountain, every pony rides. And we use t’breaks t’ keep us from goin’ too fast.”
'Breaks' should be 'brakes'.
@ketchup504
ReplyDeleteI thank you for your diligence, but please stop. I have moved on to other projects. No further edits will be made to this story.
Thank you.
@ketchup504
ReplyDeleteInstead, why don't you leave posts telling us what you thought of each chapter, what did and didn't work for you, and what you enjoyed.
Thank you. And I do hope you continue to enjoy reading Fallout: Equestria. While I am no longer editing the work, I am still keeping an eye on the comments post and love hearing my reader's thoughts and feelings on the story.
@psp7master
ReplyDeleteHello. ^.^
Thank you for your kind words. I'm very happy you enjoyed Fallout: Equestria. And I'm humbled to hear that it has had such a positive impact on your life.
I am honored by your work. Your soundtrack is beautiful. (I'm listening to it again as I write this.) Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
The community that has grown up around the story and the works it has inspired is one of the best communities in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fandom. I encourage you to check out the Fallout Equestria Resource page and the Fallout Equestria IRC channel. There are many wonderful bronies there.
--Kkat
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! I'm so very honoured that you enjoyed listening to my music. I'm really, really happy that you liked it, and, in Pinkie's words, I can't stop smiling.
As for the community, you are right: most Fo: E fans are really nice people, easy to chat with and very, very creative.
I'm sorry that I can't write more right now, but you must forgive me, since I'm very busy picking my jaw off the floor due to the fact that you, as in THE Kkat Herself, has listened to and liked my humble songs dedicated to Her and Her magnificent story.
~ psp7master
Kkat, wow.
ReplyDeleteI've been at odds with fanfiction for a long time because of admittedly silly reasons, I had so many people ruin it for me that I avoided it for a long time even when I was honestly curious.
Fallout equestria Is the first fanfic I have ever read, and having read almost to the end (chapter 34), and then...cheated ( I had to know if pip survived! I'm sorry! I just had to know if she ever made it back to her friends, to Homage... wahh...) I am honestly on the verge of tears. This is the best thing I have ever read. thank you.
You have not only changed my opinion about fanfiction -completely- around, but also pulled me further into the pony fandom than I thought possible, all while weaving a narrative that has held me more fascinated and emotionally invested for the past few weeks than I have ever been with any book or story I've ever read.
Thank you.
It has taken me several months to work my way through this, my only reading time being my lunch hour at work, and I am consistently amazed at the output of the FIM community. The artwork, the music, the PMVs (art and music!) and not the least of which is the writing.
ReplyDeleteGoing in knowing only that the Fallout series was "post-apocalyptic", I dove in, counting on my experience with other games to get me through (it did). I was not expecting such a rich and, I'll admit it, heartbreaking world.
kkat, if you're reading: stop reading, and get back to writing. Write and write and write because you have been given something incredible. Do not let go of it, no matter what.
@Kkat@Kkat
ReplyDeleteSorry.
I've read the story before, way back since you released Chapter 42. I loved it, and it became quite a cornerstone to my days, in the form of Project Horizons' forum group. I talk to them daily and can't imagine how my life would be without it.
If I had been capable of doing reading reviews that were useful way back then, I would've, but having read it before makes any surprise or shock, or even my thoughts, influenced by later events.
Plus, when I reach the point where chapters become longer than 10k words, it'll take me ~4 hours to get through and put out an as-read review.
Maybe I'll ask a silly question,but. Shall we see a sequel?
ReplyDeleteFirst of all thank you for this amazing story, I spent the last two weeks reading iit every chance I got and it blew me away. I must know though, would Littlepip ever be able to leave the weather controll pod thing? Even if it was years in the future. Part of me wishes she was able to by the "10 years later" chapter. Either way thank you for an amazing story/)
ReplyDelete@Ss sqirrel
ReplyDeleteYes, she can leave the SPP pod and does so every year on Homage's birthday -- thus the temporarily out-of-control weather Calamity mentioned in the epilogue. It would be unwise, though, for her to leave the SPP Hub, as her body isn't up to the stresses of wasteland life anymore.
