ReplyDeleteI totally understand what you are saying, man. I really do; but ad hominem isn't going to accomplish anything. I'm not saying that we ought to ENCOURAGE it, just that there are better ways to DISCOURAGE it than calling it cancer and driving the r34 bronies to the point of trolling.
Remember how this fandom has spread. We've all seen threads where trolls come in, and bronies come out, because they were treated with respect and dignity, and were actually encouraged (not only by word but by deed) to give the show a try for themselves. We've all seen that. Somehow, though, we have trouble applying that same logic to our interior problems. It boggles me.
Not for nothing, Starswirl, but even if this fandom CURED cancer, we would still be looked at as strange; at least by some, and largely by our peers. We ARE strange, in that we fly against the gender norms and age norms that are very deeply ingrained in society. This strangeness has actually been a positive in many respects, because of how wonderfully self aware we are, and how we have comported ourselves. We are mainstreaming, slowly, in spite of the R34. Tara Strong being able to joke like this actually proves this, not disproves it.
I get what you're saying, and I don't entirely disagree. I just think the way you are going about it does more harm than good.

Screw 'Love and Tolerance', it's obvious that those unable to see that there's a market for such things are unwilling to see that through, or are too shallow-minded to realize that it doesn't only apply to others only.
I'm going to continue to enjoy -all- of the community, and nobody's going to stop me. Especially not those spreading hatred over what they cannot comprehend.

While a recent poll here on EqD suggests that a significant portion of the community endorses - if not outright engages in - "clop", 23% is by no stretch of the imagination a "majority".

People look at Bronies weird because they have a very superficial understanding of My Little Pony and likely have never seen G4. Bronies have already accomplished much more good than any number of other fandoms combined. When was the last time you heard about "Twilight"(the book) fans doing anything for charity?
JJ has pictures considered "saucy" in a high percentage of drawfriends, but he also produces some of the best clean art I've ever seen.
If you don't like it, don't look at it, but Love and Tolerate those who do.

Why? Because it's gross to some people. That is an absolutely fine reason to not want to be exposed to something. Same reason why you (probably) don't want to see scat or gore. It exists, and people who like it can find it, but it's quite reasonable to ask for it to be out of view.
Plus, spoilers don't do anything to you or I except an EXTREMELY mild inconvenience of clicking a link. The horror!

Oh, and this fandom going sonic level nuts is more than probable. Especially if we only get half a third season, and nothing but direct to DVD movies past that. Sonic fans have endured bad game after bad game, half of them being delusional and claiming it's good... I dearly, dearly hope we don't get the same problem, especially if they get people outside of DHX media to make the movies.

Actually, this is very tame compared to some of the Drawfriends that include sauce. I tend to rage so hard in those. Especially when Spitfire is consigned to hiding her cuerpo espectacular behind a link.

It's just a saucy pic. The show itself has a few frames that can be suggestive too; that doesn't amount to Rule 34. I enjoy a saucy pic now and then, but I don't touch r34. There is a line between the two and it seems someponies aren't quite seeing it. Tara Strong is tweeting something directly towards OUR demograph, and that says something.

Do you see how ridiculous you sound? While it's true not everything should be tolerated, there's always a good reason WHY those things shouldn't be tolerated. There is none for this.
Obligatory footnotes so people don't misinterpret: "Tolerate" does not equate to "like." You're welcome to dislike whatever you want. Also, you finding it gross is a fine reason to want to limit exposure to yourself; filters, spoilers, etc exist for a reason. Tolerate just means not raining on other people's parades that you have no obligation to participate in.

ReplyDeleteActually, the grimdark fanfics are another problem. Its just they are far less numerous. Cupcakes, Rainbow Factory and the like are all paper-thin stories whose impact rests completely on their ability to shock the readers. No idea why they are popular.
And, for the record, I never signed onto the whole "love and tolerate" business, frankly because its a gimmick. Not even the characters in the show love and tolerate everything. They have likes and dislikes, just as every intelligent being does. To hate is to be human. To be consumed by hatred is another thing.
Pony porn is alright i have seen some really weird stuff and some clop fics that were yeah...But over all to me i agree with some other statements that it's the internet if you don't like it don't look at it no one is forcing you.

Also, everything that is not hurting another person should be tolerated. Whether it be harmless intolerance or harmless clopping it can still be tolerated.
Also, you can still tolerate something and advise against it. Just as you can tolerate something but not support it or go against it.
It's all a matter of how you would treat the individual you are disagreeing with if you had unlimited power.

Which part of this is everypony confused about?
As far as clop goes, it's a combination of the ponies' pure aesthetic appeal and their well-defined personality and characteristics that make it attractive to most.
I imagine all the negativity is from some sort of cognitive dissonance between "a character I like is doing something sexy" and "omg it's poeneez"
Everything is a fetish to someone, somewhere. EVERYTHING. That sandwich you had for lunch? That is someone's fetish. The web browser you are using to view this page? Someone's fetish. The brain is one of the most complex things in existence and it's silly to expect them all to be wired in the same way.
In the end it's really no different from how those outside the fandom hate on those within it, and to believe you're somehow any more justified in doing it is just ignorant.
That drew on for longer than I expected, but I really can't stand all the senseless prejudice and hatred that always seems to permeate this fandom in some way or another. Ugh.

So much of the intolerance and hate directed towards sauciness or R34 and the people that enjoy them is from people who cannot separate their personal feelings of disgust from the idea of making logical moral judgments. Your feelings do not determine right and wrong, and your aversion is not a basis to justify moral outrage. There are no moral consequences to "clopping" to R34 ponies. At all. No one is being hurt as result, either directly or indirectly. I could be wrong about that, but you would have to demonstrate harm is being done.

ReplyDeleteIndeed one of the things I liked was the EQD started making it to where you have to click on the 'saucy' pics to see them, that way R34s don't feel ostracized and non-R34s don't have to see them if they don't want to. BTW the fact that Tara Strong posted this doesn't surprise me, considering her work on Drawn Together and that she can get 'adult' in her humor during interviews and appearances.
Simply glorious, both her actions and the subsequent reactions of the fans gathered here and elsewhere.

Tara isn't exactly all sugar and spice herself, and has been in some pretty...crude shows, so I don't think her posting a somewhat saucy pic is all that surprising. ReplyDeleteThat said though, the people who assume that everyone visiting EqD is over 18 are kinda misinformed. I'm not, I really don't want to see anything too suggestive on here. Honestly, not because I can't 'handle it', but because I find it distasteful, especially for a show like this. That said, I doubt that Sethisto or any of the other admins are going to start posting anything really inappropriate or whatnot. Everyone needs to keep it in mind that many people under 18 watch this show, and keep the rule 34 on the sites where it's fine to have it.
