Umm... Don't believe everything you are fed by the almighty Google. You surely confused the horse manure outta me with your random blah, blah Google says cults blah comment, and refusing to read the story over that. I have no clue what you read, but it's not what I read in this story. I happen to be Christian, and I found no offense in the story, outside of the in story offenses of violent and vulgar ponies harming one another, while a small group tries to teach the magic of friendship to them... Which I accept as part of the story and myself are not offended at a personal level by them at all.
The Book of Friendship is actually quite hilariously crazy. It's dark, in the vein of the three pony races are segregated, and at brutal war with each other on an island outside the jurisdiction of Canterlot and the rule of Equestria. The letters of Twilight Sparkle and friends have been collected by Princess Celestia and compiled into a book, "The Book of Friendship". Celestia builds a society of volunteers to spread the concept of friendship and harmony to parts of the world that have yet to find it. The "Fraternity of the Joyous Friends of Princess Celestia" is actually a loose parody of all those door knocker missionaries you get with various churches or cults. It's done as a comedic parody, set in a very dark land. The side joke is everypony on the island is so disgusted by their friendshippy, happy, buddy buddy relationship, that 99.9% of the island think the pair are doin' each other. The story really doesn't do them any favors... you know... for the sakes of comedy.
Again, I am not offended by the story. I say, give it a shot, and stop letting Google's top hit dictate how you think.

I haven't read the story but your comment compelled me to google search myself.
The top suggestions pull up a Japanese manga, and a few different books on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Half-way down the search I see the Equestria Daily link to this story. No clue where you're getting this cult from.
Eh, anyway. Why is it when a few Grimdark stories update, half the comments are full of complaints bemoaning the fact there's Grimdark. If you guys really want to see normal fics update more - start writing them. Simple as that.
I usually prefer grimdark, but a comedy/light shipping is nice for breaks. Oh well, time to read something dark.

That sunset one is really good and I just started reading the sequel to it, I would recommend them, there a good read.
