• Small Update on Derpy Overall

A few things have popped up over the course of the day.  Again we apologize for being slightly vague with it all, right now there are all kinds of rumors coming in from every direction, so we are only taking the stuff that is 100% confirmed.

Right now what we do know:
Until we can get a solid response from Hasbro, or more Derpy take-downs happen, this is the only completely solid evidence we have.  It does sound like some changes to the character overall will happen in the near future.

    1. Overreacting a bit are we not? I mean I love Derpy and all but sheesh guys..

    2. Fuck you Hasbro. You were doing so well, but now you've decided to play with fire and pick apart the fandom with your own Executive Meddling. Your not getting another cent from me.

    3. Derpy Hooves, or, how I learned to stop worrying and hate retards.

      ReplyDelete
    4. @Dawnmist On top of that, if this is really due to complaints then it also reduces the likelihood of getting more fanservice of any kind in the future. My concern is that they will start to distance themselves from the mature side of the show and turn it more into braindead kid entertainment because the adult themes are becoming a liability.

It's not just an animation glitch. Not anymore. For thousands of people, Derpy represents the unique connection that has existed between the show and its fans. To have Derpy removed from existence due to executive meddling symbolically represents the removal of that connection itself. It's a big part of what makes people find this fandom to be so special, and it presently appears to be in jeopardy. So, frankly, it's entirely understandable why the fandom would be upset about it. It's not just Derpy, it's everything she has come to represent.

    7. Well i can only say so much... if they take that stuff down because they cant claim copyright on the name.. cause the community came up with it... it shows exactly that the actual copyright-laws are not apply-able to modern media.. altho i can imagine the name "derpy" itself could be also a problem because of political correctness.. i hope its neither of the above.. lets see what happens next

      ReplyDelete
    8. @Mojo

That doesn't make any sense, because this isn't something the fandom has done. How can something that the fandom didn't do change your impression of the fandom?

    9. Is it just me or is welovefine.com down??

      ReplyDelete
    10. If this is some cruel joke form We Love Fine, they can forget getting a penny from me.

Because I'm by nature the kind of guy to bunker down in preparation for the worst, I'm gonna go see if I can get a copy of "The Last Roundup" in case it is censored.

If it does get censored, then I fear for the future of everybody involved...

      ReplyDelete
    11. Hmm, is someone DDOSing welovefine?

Because I can't seem to get onto the site and google chrome is throwing back an error message...

I'm sure that you're right. The timing and suddenness of it were just a bit unnerving, and, frankly, I wouldn't put it past some. :/

      ReplyDelete
    13. I don't know what the problem is with the name "Derpy". Sure, I prefer Ditzy Doo, but Derpy is just fine.

      ReplyDelete
    14. Because this can't be said enough.. calm down and wait for more information. Jumping to conclusions and infighting is helping no one.

      ReplyDelete
    15. It seems pretty clear to me that they're just being legally cautious with merchandise. It's likely that they never intended to sell Derpy merchandise, considering her just a bakkground pony. They might not hav the name Derpy secured as their intellectual property, and thus using it for merchandise could lead to a lawsuit.

      ReplyDelete
    16. This too shall pass.
I didn't want to leave anything here because I know how stupid this whole issue is and I'm not letting it get to me.

I'm only commenting so I can contribute to the pile of calm comments. I'm not even leaving any anti-Brony "hate." This too shall pass.

      ReplyDelete
    17. What's awful about this whole situation is that the show's creators went out of their way to do something nice FOR US, and a few dipshits had to ruin everything, and make us all look bad.

Way to go. I hope you're happy now.

I'd find it incredibly humorous if they changed the name to Ditzy though. We have a word that literally means nothing (Derpy) being changed out of "fear of offense" (more like a few folks crying over canon/fanon, but ok) yet change it to the name of Ditsy. Ditsy - airheaded, etc. A blonde pony basically named airhead.

It has always refereed to stupidity. To say that it's referring to just mistakes is an example of collective denial. I don't approve of Hasbro taking it down (because The Last Roundup was awesome), but I get why a few people could be offended.

      ReplyDelete
    19. @Shadowluma
woh woh woh... calm down okay? accusing exactly the people that give the show.. and sorry .. they are the money givers behind it.. is a lil bit stupid eh?.. so instead of say "fuck you" how about thinking twice?..

    20. Have fate everypony. The fandom is not dead yet! A brave few still appeal to reason, a brave few ask for a halt to the madness and a brave few still Love and Tolerate and I think those guys are awesome.

But mind you I still think all you bronies are awesome. Even if you are in the midst of fan rage right now, I still love ya.

Please, please please don't give up on us yet Mojo and GabeEx and anyone else out there who just wants to see an end to the hate.

WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS. Because thats what twilight sparkle'd do.

    21. I play a lot of pick-up basketball games on the Murray State campus, and there is a mentally challenged kid that frequents the courts. A lot of the time we need him to play just to have enough guys for 3-on-3 or 4-on-4 games. He can't shoot, defend, dribble, pass, or rebound, and I have been hit in the face and groin by his errant passes more times than I can count, but he is a great guy and tries SO HARD, we wouldn't think about playing without him.

Maybe a future lesson on the magic of friendship can be learned on the importance of patience, and looking past someones inabilities because of who they are, not what they can or cannot do.

      ReplyDelete
    22. I wouldn't be too concerned. Remember, Hasbro has had to contend with the adult Transformers fanbase for much longer then we have even existed, and their knee-jerk reaction to anything that isn't a carbon copy of G1 is "RUINED FOREVER!". They're used to large amounts of rage.

      ReplyDelete
    23. It is unfortunate that this is happening, but at least I already have the episode.

So I'll have the episode even if it becomes a missing episode.

This can't be blamed on the majority who was thrilled with the shoutout.

    26. Bronies...please...no more rage...I'm not seeing much love and tolerance here. It may be upsetting, but if I may quote from "Over a Barrel": "Friendship is a wondrous and powerful thing. 30. The outcry against derpy by a small number of people on the basis that she is offensive towards the mentally handicapped is misguided at best. I'm sure most of the people here would agree with that. However, I think it's a little early to jump to conclusions on Hasbro's motivations on taking down the itunes episodes as well as WeLoveFine's decision to rename their derpy gear.

Also I'd caution against forming an angry mob over this. No need to start confrontations with people over it.

      ReplyDelete
    31. I blame liberals on this one.

Stupid liberals and their "let's not offend anyone!" bullshit.

      ReplyDelete
    32. Derpy was the show's link to the fandom, and then we went and destroyed her ourselves. Way to go, guys.

      ReplyDelete
    33. @Fenix

Oi, fuck off. It's pricks like you that generate an even worse image for the rest of us. You blame the entire fandom instead of the what? 20-50 people it was who immediately jumped that Derpy resembled a stereotypical disabled person and immediately took it to mean something demeaning.

The rest of us are the ones who came up with the name and perpetuate it, glorifying it and the character as our very own mascot. We -love- the character. Hell, I doubt all the people who wrote angry e-mails and signed petitions and crap were even bronies.

It was probably the trolls, and some of those Celestia-damned crusading jackasses who feel they need to be some kind of moral police that no one gives a damn about.

      ReplyDelete
    34. This just makes me sad. Not because Derpy's name might be changed, but because of how the self-righteous whining of a few people makes the entire fandom look bad.

From Hasbro's perspective, they went out of their way to give the fans this wonderful little gift, and we responded by throwing it back in their faces like spoiled children.

And even though it was really only a tiny fraction of fans who did this, Hasbro probably isn't aware of that. It makes us all look ungrateful.

This whole thing could just turn out to be a rumor, but if it's true, then it's a sad day.

    35. It looks like if you already downloaded The Last Roundup, you didn't lose it (I'm subscribed, so I got it on Sunday).

I really hope this all blows over with nothing to show for it. It's absolutely, positively ridiculous that anyone takes issue with Derpy's character or portrayal. Of all the things to accuse this community and workforce of...for Celestia's sake. Sigh.

      ReplyDelete
    36. Is this a Person actuly complaining about Derpy? Or a company because if its a company, Im pritty sure this was the downfall of the other Generations.

and why are we in a Day and Age where A few peoples voice are overthrown by the voices of the masses?

      ReplyDelete
    38. Guys, Listen...
Lets all just be calm, whatever happens happens, and Even If Derpy's name changes, she is still Derpy to us.
The worst part about this is, all this rage is beginning to tear our beloved fandom apart. If we dont stop, It will be split into people who are for Derpy and Aganst her. We cant let this happen. We cant let our fandom we worked so hard on be completly seperated by this.
      Love. And. Tolerance.

    44. A is A. Derpy is Derpy.

That which you are hearing? It's the sound of inevitability.

      ReplyDelete
    45. @Ali

Maybe you're the one retarded. Applejack is a kind of alcoholic beverage, yet her name is apparently just fine.

The Cider-Squeezy episode had all the makings of alcoholic addiction despite passing it off as apple cider. Yet that's fine.

Derp is used in place of "oops", that's about it. No one minces words online when they want to call someone a retard.

I myself am autistic and I find nothing wrong with Derpy the character, her portrayal, or her name. The trolls and idiots who complained can burn in hell, they're just making us look bad and those of us who suffer from mental disabilities FEEL bad.

      ReplyDelete
    46. The assumptions about this being the work of all those butthurt Ditzy Doo fans is just as idiotic as the assumptions that Derpy has a legitimate mental disability.

Honestly guys. I preferred Ditzy Doo, but I'm fine with the name Derpy too. Heck, even 'Pony' or whatever they end up settling on. Why? Because it's just a name. Something to know someone by. She'll still be the same silly filly whether she's called Ditzy, Derpy, Bright Eyes, or Pony.

I really despise how bitchy and stuck-up the fandom gets over names of all things. That goes for both the supporters and neighsayers. It's. a. bucking. name. Just continue to call her whatever you want and don't be a dick about it. ...Now hug and make up for it! :I

Agree, but this is hardly a unique incident of the fandom tearing itself apart. Seems like every single day there is raging and arguing among the fandom.

      ReplyDelete
    49. We really don't need to rage about this. I love derpy, and I love the show for making that great shout out to us, the last thing we need to do is rage toward them. We can't destroy the good will we have with the FiM team. Do you really want us to just look like a bunch of assholes? The kind of group no one wants to do nice things for? Yes, some people made a stink about Derpy's name, whats done is done. All raging about it is going to do is give more weight to complaints that have already been made. WE have to be the reasonable ones here. We need Hasbro to see our reactions and realize us for what we are, just a bunch of good people that appreciate them and what they do for us. How could they think the small group of haters is anything more than a fringe group then?

      ReplyDelete
    50. Just preorder the DvD from amazon , as has already been confirmed its the original episode. Enough people do that I-Tunes might get the hint. Since its still on the hasbro site I doubt they even know about it.

      ReplyDelete
    51. Les calm down everypony we need to take a deep breath and be as always love an tolerance thinking in waiting the next episode dont let the h4t3rs destroy us we need to calm down and show that we are just as always i can almost assure you that 95% of the people who complained (if that complain exist at all) are trolls the other the other 5% haters so dont take this so serious LOVE AND TOLERATE to them as always and they will leave we need to show Hasbro that we loved the shoutout that they give to the fandom

      ReplyDelete
    52. And that's why copyright law sucks dick as it is.

Need to slap that bitch into oblivion, make way for one that keeps shitheads from taking advantage of it.

For the record, though I appreciated the call out, I still think they misinterpreted Derpy's voice badly, mainly because it was overdone.

      ReplyDelete
    53. @Kayriel
I agree with you 100%. I just don't understand the people who come onto these sites just to say, "Well this fandoms sucks. You all suck." If they don't like it, why are they here?

Maybe it's just because I've never really hated something that much. Not much gets on my nerves.

      ReplyDelete
    54. @Kayriel

No offense, but you're not helping. This situation is already bad, and I don't like what he said either, but telling him to "fuck off"is only going to make things worse.

    57. So, I have to wonder...

...why doesn't Patrick Star get this much drama?

      ReplyDelete
    58. ok im actually kinda confused... what exactly is going on with this whole derpy thing, i feel dumb for asking as i have read the posts, but i still dont quite understand. The show confirms derpy and gives her a speaking role. awesome (even if i dont like her canon name, its still a brony shout out so ill take what i can get) and now stuff is being taken down? WHY is it being taken down and what does hasbro have to do with it?

      ReplyDelete
    59. @Hexplosion

Ah, so it refers to all forms of stupidity? Not just mistakes, I've had very little to do with the derp meme aside from what appears on the ragecomics and main page of memebase, which isn't much.

Though I don't understand where you got the impression I said it only meant making mistakes, or that I was picking and choosing a definition to suit my argument, I just couldn't find any reference of it being used as offensive slang pre-meme.

And the KYM article seems to confirm my suspicions, along with urban dictionary.

Post meme status would take hours to shift through and I'm sure there are instances of it being used to insult those with mental disabilities. But that would be like claiming all bronies look at R34 ponies, because there are some instances where it exists...

This all reminds me of the time our Prime Minster, David Cameron got in trouble by a group of feminists because he called some guy a tw*t (which, while bad isn't anything to be shocked about), which is a generic insult in this country that shares the name with a woman's genitalia, so, choosing to take it out of context and pick a definition to suit their case (I will not presume as to what that case may be) they decided to accuse him of being sexist even thought the use of the secondary definition made no sense what so ever.

Fortunately it didn't take people long to get bored of the whole story.

Unfortunately the circumstances are completely different in the corporate world, where in to continue to use said term may give someone the opinion (and probably fact) that they have grounds to sue because it offends them.

      ReplyDelete
    60. The name Cutie Mark Crusaders is offensive to religous people. They will henceforth be called The Bowling Dolls.

      ReplyDelete
    61. Okay, this is just plain confusing...the name bugs me too, but only because for admittedly silly aesthetic reasons. I always thought there was a grand total of, like, 2 or 3 people who were genuinely offended by her...what the heck happened?

This seems disturbingly similar to that "Spastic" disaster Hasbro experienced a year ago, where a Transformer with that name proved unintentionally offencive to people in the UK ("spastic" there is apparently the equivalent to the n-word for mentally challenged people), and the name was subsequently completely covered up and never spoken of again. As a lover of Derpy (the CHARACTER specifically), I'd be quite sad to see this happen.

      ReplyDelete
    62. what the FUCK!? the creators try to give us something nice and all people can do is piss and moan about it? Get a fucking life I am so sick of peoples bullshit. I don't know if its the fandom or the bored stay at home moms with nothing better to do than complain about shit that nobody gives a fuck about but God Dammit this shit needs to stop. THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!!!!!

      ReplyDelete
    63. Gah, I hope they don't get rid of Derpy! I don't know why some people have an issue with her, she's no different from characters like Billy (from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy) or Ed (from Ed, Edd, n' Eddy) or countless other characters I could name. Why is Derpy so offensive but not those other characters?

      ReplyDelete
    64. WeLoveFine is back up, and I think its worth noting that they have products with the word derpy on them and when I searched 'derpy' it came up with all their products with derpy on, even if they have re-named some.

The "Everyone calm down" posts seem to outnumber the rage posts at the moment, but I'm still going to stress the calm down message.

      ReplyDelete
    65. You know, I'm getting pretty tired of panic-inducing stories that are built entirely of rumors and conflicting information.

I'm going to ignore this until we have something definitive, because the rabble-rousing isn't helping anything.

      ReplyDelete
    66. Oh man guys, if they change her name to Ditzy, WHAT WILL WE DO? I mean, first Scratch became DJ P0N-3, then Lyra became Heartstrings... I mean it's not like we won't go on calling them whatever fan names we gave them regardless of the canon... oh wait.

I get people are REALLY attached to Derpy's name. I like it too. But you're deluding yourself if you thought it was going to be a reoccurring thing that she would show up in episodes as a speaking part. She's a PR nightmare that won't make sense to anyone outside the Brony fandom, and an insanely beloved character inside the fandom that insights knee-jerk reactions LIKE THIS APPARENTLY.

And those of you who are screaming we should kick Derpy haters out of the fandom should be ashamed of yourselves. Everypony should understand that all ponies have different opinions, and we don't always agree. The least we can do is be sympathetic to those who were offended, even if we personally don't feel the same way. Love and tolerate guys. Love and tolerate.

      ReplyDelete
    67. Us Bronys are like Icarus. We just flew a little too close to the sun and now Derpy will be gone because people think she's making fun of mentally retarded people. I think we forgot to realzie the internet is a petty offensive place and what seemed like fun to us can always be taken to wrong way. Even if Derpy really is just a cute way of saying making a dumb face.

      ReplyDelete
    68. @TheSharp0ne

I kind of doubt there are legal issues. Derpy was in the show and people noticed her, she wasn't created by anyone outside the show. "Derpy" is a very general term and I doubt they'll have copyright issues with it.

      ReplyDelete
    69. "sigh"...

Is there seriously anyone who actually REMEMBERS where Derp came from?

Seriously, how do people find ways to get offended over a word created by SOUTH PARK.

      ReplyDelete
    70. Agreed with everyone else that's saying this. Please, in the name of all that is holy, calm down. Sure this has caught us off guard, but we'll get past this. We don't even have any solid evidence on this. Just so-called sources. There's nothing in writing. For all we know, we might getting taken for a ride. Calm down and let's hope we have some concrete evidence somewhere down the road.

      ReplyDelete
    71. sigh... it would be shame if they change her. I was so happy when that scene happened. but regardless, Derpy will always be Derpy to me :)

      ReplyDelete
    72. Here's something I just said in chat and if word can get to the show or Hasbro or something somehow that'd be great and have them really think about it and reconsider...

"...there's so much good that can come out of that [having a pony with a disability]. Especially if there's an episode where she does a lot of great things in her own special way to show that she can be just as a part of pony society as anypony else."

Dunno, just would be a great morale for a lot of people to learn.

      ReplyDelete
    73. CRY!!!!!

Hasbro does a good thing, and some hate-mongerers take it as an insult, and the Brony awesomeness dies.

      ReplyDelete
    74. Derpy, made by bronies, for bronies. Please can we keep it that way

      ReplyDelete
    75. This is giving me a headache. I just wish some official information could be released. Petition is only minutes away from reaching 5,000 signatures.

      ReplyDelete
    76. Thank you, Hasbro/Apple/whoever is doing this. My hat is off to you~!!

      Finally!! Some possible headway.

      ReplyDelete
    77. Even if they change derpy's name (which they shouldn't because by doing this you paint the term derp as a bad thing), the likelihood of Hasbro stopping there is small. What I fear for is that they will think servicing the mature fan-base is not worth the potential legal issues.

      ReplyDelete
    78. Am I the only one that thinks this whole thing is sorta stupid. Both sides are acting ridiculously. Just deal with it and move on. She's still Derpy Hooves to the brony community, why does it even matter what she's called in the show?

      ReplyDelete
    79. These fucking idiots deserve NO fucking show at all.

      ReplyDelete
    80. And so what I feared has come. I feel a bit upset myself that Derpy is going to be changed, but there isn't much we can do about it unless we can directly talk about Hasbro. We don't know if the outrage over Derpy was serious or in fact attention-grabbing. But nevertheless it still happened. We can't get angry at Hasbro for this because the last thing you need as a company that entertains children is to get people accusing you of being offensive. There is a lot I disagree with this protesting group, especially their lack of outrage over Snails who is clearly slow. Whether they be selective or in fact trolls, we can't let our anger blind us.

I'm not happy with some of the comments I see here. I see a vocal minority that is having a cursing sailor fit and even threatening either Hasbro or the protesters. Forget the large group that is clearly upset but calm about the issue. The loudest make the image. I strongly disapprove of what some of you are doing. This is not who we are. Cut it out.

We will get over this eventually. Fans such as me will still call her Derpy. The staff behind FiM are very likely disappointed that their shout-out to the fans was shot apart by a small group of people. Maybe they will toss us a bone with something nice in a future episode. As for now, let us keep our cool and move on.

      ReplyDelete
    81. Now this is just spiraling into chaos.

Not gonna worry about it until something actually comes from Hasbro. As ultimately, they are the ones that decide which way to go with this.

      ReplyDelete
    82. Since the episode is still being shown and advertised on the Hasbro site its probably apple over reacting to a few spoil sports. Kinda like how Google will pull anything if a few people complain.

    85. I would like to share with all of you the letter I wrote to Hasbro and DHX in regards to Derpy.

      Dear DHX Media Vancouver, Hasbro,

I realize that by now you have probably received thousands of e-mails both supporting Derpy, and the neighsayers who want to have her removed from the show. I would like to raise my voice in support! I, like many others, identify with her character despite how brief it has been overall. I remember when I had my last growth spurt that shot me up to roughly two meters tall! I was constantly tripping over my own feet, knocking things over and breaking everything by accident. While I wasn't quite cross-eyed, my vision also started to fail at the same time which only made me clumsier and more accident prone. Now, years later a character that reminded me of that awkward time has arrived on a show that I love dearly and I couldn't be happier! Please let Derpy continue to be who she is.

Thank you for everything you have done to make My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic the wonderful show that it is and continue doing what you do best.

    87. I just think it's horrible that somebody thinks the proper reaction to "this is a mentally disabled character" is "erase it from existence". How sad is that? We're supposed to pretend that the mentally disabled don't exist? And that's better than showing them being included in the pony community?

      ReplyDelete
    88. Hey Bronies, welcome to dealing with Hasbro. Sometimes they can the greatest thing ever, and will give you exactly what you want. Other times they seemingly do things just to tick off the fans. Just remember, they're a corporations trying to make money, and their methods don't always line up with what you want. Don't let it get you down though, because the good times are always worth the bad.

With this situation we still don't know what's happening. My bet is on trademark issues, but I can't know for sure until we get more info. I beg of you all to just be patient and see what happens. Stressing out over this isn't going to do anybody any good. If this situation is bothering you then just take a few deep breaths, and maybe go do something else for a while.

I love Derpy just as much as the next Brony, but please, be reasonable. Getting angry or upset is not helping our cuase. If anything it will make things worse. Everyone just needs to take a step back from all of this and take a deep breath.

NOTHING has been confirmed yet. It looks bad, but PLEASE do not lose control. You guys are making this worse than it ever was, even before today. Derpy was never as huge a controversy as some claimed her to be. You are drawing too much attention to this issue so it comes off as something worse than what it really was.

Everyone just needs to leave this be for now. Until everyone can address this with a level head.

    90. I for one am rather ashamed of EqD as a whole. In its hunger for up to the minute updates, it has made itself a prime target for trolling, miscommunication, and all out rumor mongering. There's a reason you don't yell "FIRE" in a crowded theater. With all the SOPA and ACTA crap still fresh in people's minds, we're all looking for what else people want to take from us- even if it's something that doesn't entirely make sense. Feeding hysteria discredits EqD as a media outlet. What would you think about EqD if all you had seen of it were this post and its comments?

I implore everyone- but most especially the mods: THINK BEFORE YOU POST.

    91. I still don't know what all the fuss is about. The name's fine, and people are getting a bit hyped up over a possible name change.

      ReplyDelete
    92. You see, this is why you just can't go complaining to corporations every time you don't get your way. They might actually try to change something and end up shitting everything up for months until it finally gets resolved in a way that could potentially be -worse- than it originally was. Oh well, what's done is done. Who knows, maybe we'll get a re-release of TLR with Derpy's voice more feminine and appealing to the majority... or maybe they'll take all the rage and upset the wrong way and kill her off forever.

      ReplyDelete
    93. I'm buying the DVD for a different reason now. If Derpy gets Edited out, then That DVD is going to be the ONLY COPY of the Episode that will have Derpy in it. It'll be like those Episodes of Pokemon that were banned for James having Boobs and Porygon giving Kids Seizures.

      ReplyDelete
    94. Really, Hasbro and WeLoveFine? You're going to bend to the brainless whining of a small, obnoxious, politically correct minority that takes offense to everything, no matter what it is? That's pathetic. Grow a spine, people, and go look on Urban Dictionary before you assume you know what pop culture terms mean.

I'm sorry that the past few days have been filled with the community exploding within itself, and those that complained about Derpy are part of this fandom as well. You can't sit there and tell me that this community is fickle, I mean a fanfiction appeared on this site that had mature humor and people lost their shit. I've lost hope for this fandom so many times I can't even think straight, so I'm sorry if I go off the rails when "fans" wreck things.

Let's just hope this all blows over. Maybe with an episode coming people, including me, can calm the fuck down. I can't keep pushing in-fighting under the rug so I can enjoy media fans make.

Of all the negative press I've read about bronies, that would be the most insulting yet.

      ReplyDelete
    104. @Mooke
I just posted that to give you the answer to its origins. I was talking to all the bronies in general who were denying that it had no connotations to stupid. Also, I'm familiar with English swears so I know where you're coming from. A girl who had an obvious crush on me once called me a cunt because I did something stupid. When I think of English insults, I think of bloody, cunt, and twat.

Anyways, I don't think Derpy was ever meant to be a jab at mentally disabled people and I think everyone on both sides are overreacting. But the parallels between the common misconceptions about mentally disabled and Derpy's behavior are there. Case in point: when I was in high school, me and my friends would often make fun of people by calling them retards. Typical, no? When we'd do this, we'd cross our eyes, make mock spastic motions with our arms, and make "hur-durr" noises similar to Derpy's voice.

      ReplyDelete
    105. Hasbro,Apple,We love fine. Are doing what any company does when it gets complaint's. they don't want the bad PR so they remove it. Until they know what's going on and can deal with it.

i also highly dought these complainant's are coming from parent's. But from people who are mad that she was named derpy.

      ReplyDelete
    106. Well... This sucks. I'm not really mad about this whole ordeal, just upset that Hub (or Hasbro) had to do this in the first place, and it's because of some people in our community.

    107. @Papa Prinny

Going to lose your cool over a name change, huh? And I thought the Derpy protesters were a bit Gilda.

    108. At this rate the fandom will be in ruins by the third season.

      ReplyDelete
    109. So basically we know nothing more than we did before. Hasbro has done nothing to take down the existing copies of the episode.

Apple has done this sort of thing before (some of you might remember the NIN Downward Spiral app issue if you're Nine Inch Nails fans. Similar creator/Apple disconnect)

And WeLoveFine... well there could be any number of explanations for that.

Relax and take a deeeeeep breath. The biggest way to screw the pooch on this is to overreact and do something stupid.

      ReplyDelete
    110. Derpy is just the latest in a long tradition of slow-witted, clumsy characters that have been a cartoon staple since the days of Goofy, and is far from as "offensive" as what has been seen in other children's shows. No, this has to be something else, and I would agree with the others who hypothesize that it has to do with the naming rights. Hasbro, as the owners of the IP, could appropriate the fan name if they desired, but let's be honest, it wouldn't be very marketable towards the target demograph, cause what parent (who has no knowledge of the online Brony phenomenon) is going to buy a toy named "Derpy" for their 5 year old daughter? Studio B probably overstepped their boundaries when they included her fan name as part of the shout-out, and now Hasbro has reasserted their authority. Whatever happens, we'll still call her Derpy... one has only to look as far as "Heartstrings" and "Golden Harvest" to see how stubborn our fandom is.

      ReplyDelete
    111. We in out impedance would like to think it was the guys at legal who know that Derpy hooves is not owned by hasbro, so they want the Derpy merch pulled. The people who complained(If that is even a factor) are single parents with nothing better to do.

      ReplyDelete
    112. @Kayriel

So because you aren't offended by something, nobody else should be ever? Settle down. It is conceivable that others may hold different opinions.

Also, if you're going to start ranting about trolls and idiots who should burn in hell, you shouldn't then complain that other people are making you look bad. Just saying.

      ReplyDelete
    113. my favorite part is if they'd called her "Ditzy," some people would be up in arms because they think it's a demeaning stereotype about blondes

      ReplyDelete
    114. I will be cool about this, to prevent the bronies getting a bad name, but I seriously disagree with all of this. I dunno if this is because of the illogical argument of Derp being offensive to the mentally disabled, when it has nothing to do with the mentally challenged and it just shows those claiming such have not done their homework on the situation. They seem to just have to complain about something, I hope this goes ignored and Hasbro and DHX finds out what Derp means and rightfully ignore these people.

      ReplyDelete

I can make myself look bad justifiably any time I please. I'm an asshole, and if I want someone to burn in hell, that's my opinion. That said, it's a pretty long list, as is.

And no, other people can have opinions. Everyone's entitled to it. But when you start acting on those opinions in an effort to damage the majority, people you might call peers or friends, then you become the problem, and your opinion ceases to be an opinion but a levering point in an attempt to get what you want versus what everyone else wants.

      Pathetic.

As for you Nightmare Moon, I get what you're saying, but frankly? Sitting around here wringing our hands and saying, "Oh those poor misguided people." and "Let's just see how it goes..." is accomplishing about as much, if not slightly less than my raging at anyone who's being a prick. They need to realize they DID wrong and upset a lot of people for no damn good reason other than their own skewed views and biased perceptions.

      ReplyDelete
    117. If this is a copyright issue with the name "Derpy," then it is a simple matter of redubbing the name with "Ditzy".so likely any reairing or publishing will have the redub on it, they will have to give her the Naming of Dtzy in all offical and subtle glory... then people will just call her derpy as their endearing name.

if it is a matter of fear of being offensive, then it leaves a pretty nice solution to leave in the hand of a name-calling episode

    140. I think this is stupid, but I must say I don't like what they did with Derpy. She's supposed to be an adorable pony with bad eyesight. They could have had her be cute, klutzy, and still our beloved Derpy while still having her be normally intelligent. They're portraying her too much and she's too exaggerated.

I think that would have been funnier, had absolutely no chance of being offensive, and still fit in with the fandom's portrayal.

      ReplyDelete
    141. I really do hope that none of this is due to the supposed outrage from one or two people.

Derpy leveling up to a speaking character was an awesome nod to this community, and regardless of if one preferred the "Ditzy" name, this was definitely a cool gift for the Bronies from Hasbro and Studio B. It shows that they can acknowledge us without damaging the original intent of the show.

It would be a shame if these little nods to us were thrown out entirety just because a small minority got upset over Derpy.

      ReplyDelete
    142. @Firestorm I was reading a petition on this subject, and seeing how Derpy was basically raised by the fandom i will join the ranks and sign to not have her name changed.

    144. A few internettrolls and ignorant complainers are not only succeeding in taking away something very precious to Bronies.

They're now also causing hatred amongst fans in a once peacefull community.

I hate these people, And i know it makes me just as bad as them.
But i just dont care anymore.

Derpy was the ultimate gift to the fans, If she were to be completely removed or even just the name change.

I would be very sad, Because it would mean these people won and that the actual fanbase reasons, emails and petitions will be just tossed aside.

      ReplyDelete
    145. and so began the political sterilization of My Little Pony. Who would have thought, of all things, that someone could somehow manage to be offended by MLP? ReplyDelete
    146. @Nightmare Moon

And I can appreciate that. But I tend to be a great deal more hostile so there's absolutely no mistake in the tone of my post or reply, as we lack verbal intonations and body language in this medium.

All the same, this whole thing is stupid. The people who started the petitions and angry e-mails are stupid. The trolls who helped them are stupid. And the people lumping the rest of us together with them are vastly more insipid than the lot. Those are the ones who get people to see all of us in a bad light for the problems of a few that we NEED to excise before they cause us more harm.

That's my view, in any case.

      ReplyDelete
    147. If you're going to identify yourselves as mature fans of My Little Pony, at least try to behave maturely.

Many fans have been acting very proprietary towards the show and characters, as if they owned it in some real way. Get some perspective. We all knew the label "Derpy", while cute, is insensitive. We love it because they acknowledged our fandom by using it.

It will always be her nickname, more popular than any other given to her.

      ReplyDelete

    153. This doesn't make sense, why would Hasbro listen to complaints about Derpy's portrayal making fun of the mentally disabled, but continue to allow Michael Bay to make Transformers movies that have been cited by many to be both racist and sexist.

Either Hasbro is very inconsistent or is changing the name for an entirely unrelated reason. I'm willing to bet on the latter.

      ReplyDelete
    154. There was no need to make her anything but a fun photobomb character, but if they were insistent on sticking her in an episode, she should have been the Mail Pony that delivers AJ's letter (how awesome would it have been to see Pinkie giving Derpy cake?). Instead they went with her just being the village idiot.

      ReplyDelete
    155. @Timey Wimey

There's very little insensate about it. She was given the fandom-personality as something of a klutz, and given that her original name was Ditzy Doo, they actually weighed out to be the same flippin' thing. She's an adorable, lovable airhead who makes the cutest mistakes.

The folks up at Studio B, even Faust the Wordbringer herself when she was still with the team, grew attached to that themselves and told us they enjoyed what we did with her in that respect. If we'd called her Slowbrains McRetardhoof, then yes, there's absolutely no mistaking that we're being pricks.

Derpy Hooves, wherein Derpy simply refers to being accident-prone or likely to fail at attempted efforts. The word itself has no negative connotations. If you think it's a mean word, then you are the one attaching a mean definition to it, and you should feel bad for applying it to the character if not done in an ironic, humorous sense.

As far as perspective, we have plenty, and while most of us who are reasonable do not believe we own anything about the show, we as fans are still entitled to be upset at changes. That is just part of being in a fandom, the immersion factor is what makes it enjoyable for many of us.

      ReplyDelete
    156. @AJ2412

You're an idiot. If the issue is that they got complaints about Derpy's role in the episode and all of this is a big PR kerfuffle in response, there will be no Ditzy. She'll just be gone.

Nevermind the fact that she was dubed as Derpy long before Ditzy Doo was even a thing, and that Ditzy was never her canon name because when the episode was written Derpy didn't exist.

      ReplyDelete
    157. @AJ2412
She was never called "Ditzy Doo". People only assumed the pegasus in Winter Wrap Up was Derpy. Since she was called Derpy in episode, she's canonically called Derpy.

    161. Dear Bronies,

I'm somewhat newer to the community, having only become a fan around October or so. But I have to say this whole reaction is very distressing. One of the things I've grown to love about this community is the idea of love and tolerance. That the fact was no matter what happened, who trolled a pony fan or anything like that, there'd be no counter flaming or anything. Just smile and move on.

Here I see uncontrolled rage, swearing, caps locks and all kinds of reactions that I don't fit in with the overall message at all and it frankly makes me very sad.

I had hope for awhile that the brony population would be a welcome addition to the greater internet community. No matter what happened, people would stick together and fight irrationality with calmness and tolerance.

I love Derpy. I love all the ponies. But the characters, the creators and everyone would, I think, be very ashamed at the way everyone here is acting.

Please, keep calm and canter on. All will be clear when it's the right time.

Until then, brohoof, my brethren. Take care.

    162. @Kayriel: Yes, but all cursing is going to do is make you look bad to everyone else while that guy looks bad at lumping the entire fandom into someone who complained about the Derpy name when as I said, it was just the vocal minority who complained.

As for the second deal, yeah, you're not going to get any argument out of me. I would like to get Hasbro/Studio-B's E-mail address and show my support for the character and thank them for acknowledging their fans in such a way, but no one wants to provide said e-mails.

    163. I'm kind of pissed, the reason I finally decided to buy the show on iTunes was because of Derpy's appearance.

      ReplyDelete
    164. @Fenix

There is a basis for it, however; Lauren herself, when first informed of Derpy's popularity with the fandom, she said that "Ditzy Doo" might be recycled as her name later on-- obviously that did not come to pass, but it's still worth noting.

Either way, ridiculing those who prefer it and claiming that they're delusional for not getting with the program now that Derpy is the canon name is not exactly in line with our fandom's supposed philosophy; the "tolerance" part is clearly not being exercised.

I guess this just goes to show how people within a fandom like ours can vary; just the other day, I was told by someone here that preferring Ditzy to Derpy was a perfectly fine option, since it's just my opinion and doesn't hurt anyone.

    165. Dear everyone offended by Derpy,
Really? Is it her name? Do you think that derp makes her sound mentally challenged? Derp is a word utterred when one screws up, anyone and everyone derps. Its what she does, god forbid we have a character similar to Goofy, or Patrick Star, or Cosmo, or Sheen, or DeeDee, or Robin (batman joke). There is nothing offensive about Derpy. Get over yourself.
      Love and Tolerance,
      Bronies.

    166. I have noticed a large amount of rage directed in many different directions so allow me to clarify anything that has been said...

All that has been stated is that the episode is no longer downloadable on iTunes and We love Fine doesn't have a specified name for her at the moment...

This doesn't mean that we should draw to an automatic conclusion that Hasbro is changing Derpy's name or that in any way, that Derpy is the cause...

Even if people complained about Derpy, too much evidence would be stacked against them to prove that Derpy is not the equivalent of a retard...

I can prove this using 3 facts from the show:

      1. Retardation causes someone to have a hard time listening or understanding commands given to them. Derpy shows no sign of this as she immediately stops helping Rainbow Dash WHEN SHE COMMANDS HER TO...I personally know someone who is retarded and from an experience with her I would know how hard it is to get them to understand and obey any command given to them...

      2. The only found definitions of derp or derpy, refer to goofing up, making a silly or otherwise retarded-LOOKING not 100% retard but only a similarity to the face of what a "mentally disabled person" might look like, and/or to signify a stupid or careless move...Not in anyway do any of these descriptions state that the person who has "derped" or is being "derpy" to be the equivalent of a retard, MAYBE similar BUT NOT literal...

      3. No offense, but if anypony seemed retarded, Snails would be the candidate there...COME ON, SNAILS? AND DID NOBODY ELSE THINK OF THAT WHEN THEY SAW HIS CUTIE MARK?

But regardless of those things we shouldn't overreact at the moment...

If anything, the biggest complaints will most likely be from some douchebag parents who are so close-minded, you have a better chance trying to get inside the federal reserve vault than trying to help them conceive the notion that someone who may look "retarded" may not be "retarded".

And if snails was complained about for being retarded or even slightly portrayed as that, then why didn't the episode with him in it get edited?

TLDR;Stay calm and don't assume anything, until official word from hasbro confirms Derpy being the reason for this mess, I suggest we all stay calm and carry on with our lives...

You know when you listen to someone and nod your head for a bit only to shake your head a little later? That's how I felt with this post. Some of the opponents of Derpy in fact have relatives that are disabled and are overassuming the character. They're not this PC police organization meant to destroy all fun ever. They're just misunderstanding and the last thing we need is to get angry at them. As much as you may disagree with them (I disagree with them as well) just mocking them and yelling at them makes you look like the bad guy in the end. Bronies right now are explaining to some of these opponents that Derpy was not created to offend the handicapped. Please calm down.

      ReplyDelete
    168. Everything is offensive, no exceptions. This is why we can't have nice things.

      ReplyDelete
    169. They seriously need to get rid of her though. Hasbro is basically calling kids with lazy eye retards.

      ReplyDelete
    170. 1. as far i know "derp" was first created by the south park creators in one of their movies. and they allow people to use it everywhere and it has grown to a common term everybody is using.

      2. we all know that tabitha misstook derpy as a male and made her voice sounding like a male. maybe they took the episode down and redo the voice just with a more female sounding voice and maybe try to dont give her this "slow" sound in her voice.

      3. oh and remember those videos from alex.s on youtube? i mean remember how youtube handles such things. they first take it down, than look if it was a legal takedown and if all is ok the video/account comes back. same here i guess and hope.

      4. maybe we should start a petition to counter the other one and show them the power of 99%

      5. relax people. wait for more infos.
there is still derpy printed on the shirts on the WLF shop and on the buttons as well. if it would be thaaaaat serious they would have took them down fully first and dont sell them anymore...

      6. it was one of the best moments in my life to see her talking and being part of the story. i dont want to lose that and i guess nobody wants that.

      7. and at the end one last reminder: all this butthurt in those comments here... thats EXACTLY what the trolls want to reach. so dont feed them. everything will be fine sooner as you think.

      greetings
      forces.

It's fine if you prefer Derpy or Ditzy or Bright Eyes. I don't care. I don't even care if you say you preferred them in this comment thread, because whatever. Make Derpy your headcanon nickname for all I care.

But when something like this happens and there is so much confusion going around already, it is pitifully short-sighted and self-centered (nevermind a logical black hole when justified the way it was) to sing from the rooftops that the name you liked more is going to be canon now so what is happening is a good thing. Which is exactly what the person we were both responding to did.

      ReplyDelete
    172. NO NO NO NO NO! At least I have preordered the DVD and will have her in her true form.

You do not embody the spirit of MLP, but I respect your existence as a person anyway. Take care.

      ReplyDelete
    174. Ohwell, they can change the name for all I care. Hell if it's that much of a problem, change the voice too

Just don't get rid of the character :(

      ReplyDelete
    175. Somehow, I have a feeling we Bronies are gonna blow it so big it may end up leading to MLP:FiM's cancellation*Not to go overboard*, which will lead to an even bigger firestorm.

    176. I think I know what's going on. Derpy is fine for American audiences, however, internationally, some broadcasters might take issue with Derpy. I live in Canada, and perhaps the inclusion of Derpy might be why Treehouse has yet to show new episodes. Other broadcasters might be in the same boat too, and untill that can be satisfied, they may refrain from showing the new season. That's my guess anyway, since I found out that apparently on Treehouse, certain words like "loser" were muted out. I hate to say this, but given the choice between this show reaching a wider audience, or Derpy, I would prefer she stay a background pony. Oh don't get me wrong, I love Derpy. Derpy is basically the entire internets self insertion into a cartoon for little girls. when we see Derpy, we see a bit of the fandom interact in Equestria directly.

    177. I know we are suppost to love and tolarate but if I find who ever complained about derpy they will be bucked off a cliff then sent to the moon

Or maybe just send them Muffins. ;)

    179. And for the record, no one should in their right mind reply to AJ2412. Do you not know a troll when you see one?

      ReplyDelete
    180. I kinda think this whole thing is kind of being blown out of proportion. We don't even know if the episode itself is going to be changed in any way.

If I had to guess at why this happened, I think this is a marketing thing. I'm thinking maybe Hasbro's marketing department didn't want any products sold with the word "Derpy" in it to avoid offending the mainstream. I don't think this means the episode is going to be censored, I just think it means that, assuming Hasbro makes any official Derpy products, she'd probably be named something else to avoid harming sales and creating controversy with parents of children buying pony products for kids (the target audience which most of the merchandise is marketed toward).

Now, I am not a business major and I don't work for Hasbro, so I don't know if any of that is whats going on or even if that's a good argument, that's just what I think is happening.

Honestly, even if there was a name change in canon, I don't think they'd remove the scene or change it because, honestly, redoing a whole animated scene to fix an episode that has already been aired would be inexpensive and impractical. Simply removing the scene entirely wouldn't work since the scene showing the town hall wrecked has Derpy in it and is somewhat necessary to the plot, if for no other reason than establishing the building is wrecked and money is needed to repair it. Like ... if they did change the episode, the most we'd probably get is Rainbow Dash's line being changed to "Careful Ditzy," or something.

I don't think this means an entire change in Derpy's canon personality (assuming it was ever intended for her to make more appearances).

And even if that is what happens, honestly ... I can see how Derpy's portrayal would offend some people, even if it didn't offend me personally. I can see why some people would even want it changed. I don't agree with it, but I can understand. I think we should try to be calm and show Hasbro, Studio B ... well everyone that we can debate an issue without resorting to panic and anger.

But that's just what I think. Sorry if I rambled a bit, just thought I'd post my thoughts here.

      ReplyDelete
    181. .....But...I love her so much...... I love her Derpy name....

      The voice was fine.....

Seriously, if SHE seemed retarded to those idiots, what about:

      -Goofy
      -Patrick Starfish
-Ed from Ed, Edd 'n Eddy
      -

    182. @Sandman
Okay, so I try to clear up something with someone and I'm the bad guy? I wasn't ridiculing them. I never said that the "Ditzy Doo" name was completely wrong, but it's like choosing fanon over canon, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

      ReplyDelete
    183. @El Mau

Derpy refers to a cross eyed or assymetric expression, and is often associated to clumsy behaviours, sometimes people say derp after someone doing something stupid or clumsy.

    186. This is completely ridiculous. An exceedingly small and barely vocal minority is going to ruin this for everyone and cause Hasbro to turn the show into the previous MLP series that were dull as dishwater and had no redeeming values; something that was meant ONLY to sell toys and suffered terribly because of it.

This is a NEGATIVE for everybody. There is no way that this can do anything but hurt Hasbro's reputation and frankly it's shocking that they would sacrifice a potentially enormous source of income (the teenage and adult fandom) because a few people were unreasonably offended by this.

I hope the people who complained are very proud of themselves, because they're going to be the ones who end up forcing their faux-politically correct ideals onto the apparently money-allergic higher-ups at Hasbro. This is a classic case of executive meddling and it's going to cause even more harm in the long run.

      ReplyDelete
    187. @pipsiscool

Well see I like a lot of the content the fandom produces.

and just leaving is surrender and Im not someone who goes down without fighting.

      ReplyDelete
    188. I'm gonna say this.

Derpy was the biggest gift Hasbro has ever given us. Anyone who complained about Derpy's scene is ungrateful and should be ashamed to call themselves a brony.

Furthermore, I'm certain this will blow over soon enough. There was a statement saying that Hasbro didn't really hear much of the "complaints" about Derpy. So there's no reason to change anything.

Also, need I remind everyone and anyone who has a problem with the name "Derpy" that that was her fan name from the get-go. Ditzy Doo was never shown, only referred to as having made a big mistake.

Derpy doesn't make mistakes. She's just really clumsy. Like the fans made her out to be. Like she was ever since Feeling Pinkie Keen.

This is what you asked for, bornies. Everything you asked for was given to you. If you complained about it or didn't accept it, then kindly get the buck out of this fandom now because you are a disgrace to the true fans and to the concepts of love and tolerance.

That is all. Gonna get back to my fics about Derpy and Dash short stories now.

      ReplyDelete
    189. Wow Hasbro, way to be far too politically correct.

    190. @TenchiFreak5
Hm. Thank you; I'm glad there's still some folks around here with sense in their heads.

And yeah, bragging about what's happening is the last thing we or anyone else here needs; all it serves to do is discredit that person and their cause, as well as further divide fans. Even I'm not going so far as to gloat; I genuinely love Derpy herself and would be quite saddened to see her erased from existence over something as dumb as this.

      ReplyDelete
    191. I love Derpy as she was, is, and shall be, but I don't really care if her toy, if any, comes about as Ditzy Doo ("Argh! We're figting WB/Hanna-Barbera over a five second clip on the crappiest season of Scooby Doo, really?"), Derpy Hooves(best end, but not likely), or Bright Eyes.

Just hope that the DVD with the Last Roundup still has the "classic" opening... "Snap it up quick kiddies!"

      Maybe... They're rerecording Derpy's voice?

      ReplyDelete
    192. @Thunderstorm

Derpy seems to be akin to classic clumsy characters such as Goofy.

Is she the sharpest tool in the shed? No. Is she clumsy? Yes. Would her behavior upset someone like Rainbow Dash? Yes, because Dash gets has a tendency to get upset and impatient with anyone who slows things down (including Fluttershy).

      ReplyDelete
    193. I find this whole thing to be a little bit disappointing. I mean come on. The fine staff that work on mlp give us this (may i say) awesome shout out and as a whole we are still ecstatic that Derpy got name dropped and a voice but a few bad fans took the characterization of derpy the wrong way. Have you seen the other rendition of derpy. Also people seem to mistake the term derpy as mentally ill but i see it a air headed or when things get a little wonky. I found derpy to be charming and i am not much derpy fan. I just want to say that please bring derpy back and i hope they don't shy away from making more reference like that in the future. I know that the tiny group of people took derpy the wrong way but they are just over reacting.
