New Legendary Pony Pokemon

Oh Nintendo, I don't know if it was intended, but that sure is a similar model to a specific new line of pony.  I'm going to catch one and call it... Applejack.

Outside of playing the games, I haven't done a whole lot of pokemon digging.  Apparently this is going to be one of those event legendaries released online and at various stores as an exclusive.  It's also a leak, so no telling where exactly it will show up! Hopefully you poke-fans out there can get your hands on one!

Update: Apparently this dude is pretty old! Shows how much I follow pokemon these days!

I can't wait to get a Keldeo, though I'm not sure what I'd name it, something pony related of course!

New Pokemon, probably a normal type unlike, Radidash, and Ponyta.

Sorry Seth, but Keldeo (this pokemon) can't be nicknamed, because is an event-only pokemon (and no shiny version either)

This pokemon isn't really a pony pokemon -- it was created /before/ MLP aired -- it was discovered in the code of Pokemon Black and White in Japan in September 2010. So not an MLP reference.

@Impious

...so?

i haven't heard of it, mostly cause i, like Seth, don't keep up with news.

now, on the other hoof, i've played thousands of hours of Pokemon.

Gantz said...

Not at all a new Pokemon, actually.

Kaledo, a legendary Water/Fighting type.

And while it does bear a striking resemblance to some awesome ponies, it's hardly a shoutout to Hasbro; it's been around way too long.

Lemon Drop said...

That's Keldeo. It's not new, or leaked. We've known about it, and yes, it looks like a Pony~

Killsteal_Wolf said...

The Shiny one is Green instead of Blue. Most people have already agreed on calling it Lyra.

Funilly enough Keldeo was created before Friendship is Magic was released.

And for Pokemon Fans who know more, this thing seems almost certain OU. Possibly Uber, Sub/Calm Mind makes this thing very hard to take down, and Water Fighting has a very good coverage. Plus it's Unique Skill is basically a fighting Psyshock, so you can run a full Special Set and still hit that annoying Blissey and take it out in one... just be cautious of Jellicent and you will rock with it.

Senior Waffles said...

I'm not seeing it (if anything the snout reminds me of a moose). Also, they've only been basing pokemon on real life animals for 10+ years or so. I see no correlation.

CityFlyer502 said...

About time Keldeo came up for grabs. Though I haven't picked up my copy of White in weeks, so I might just wind up stowing it away on my PC for who knows how long.

DJLowrider said...

According to serebii.net, its name is Keldeo, #647. Water/Fighting type.

If I manage to get one, I'll probably name it SHOOBEDOO. Because all I can think of when combining ponies & water is sea ponies.

brilliantspecter said...

Hmmm...
Ponies existed 10/10/2010...
Pokemon Black and White came out on 9/18/2010 in Japan. Even though Keldeo is only now being acknowledged by Nintendo as an 'official' Pokemon, it's existed in the game's code ever since the game first came out, so nah - Keldeo came just barely before Ponies.

It IS an interesting similarity, though! I've been looking forward to Keldeo, too. Ponies made me look forward to it even more, haha.

The only thing leak-ish about this is that we're not supposed to know that Keldeo's being officially revealed by Nintendo yet. Everyone in the Pokemon community already knows it exists, and have known for well over a year. =P

Pokemon is ridiculous.

Sometimes you need to let something die. That is a great example. I mean two pokemon are ice cream and a garbage bag.

Nintendo is running out of ideas. Let pokemoon die with what respect it still holds.

Sprikler Trickler said...

This was around when Pokemon Black and White were released. Not pony related.

Nightmare Moon said...

This was actually well known for a while, this is one of those Pokemon that Nintendo doesn't recognize as official for a bit, but yes, as it was mentioned, the data was there when Black & White was officially released.

brilliantspecter said...

I think Vanilluxe is AWESOME. Mine secured me so many surprise victories in the Wifi tournament a while back. No one expected a blisteringly-fast Ice Beam after fighting through a Trick Room team. Heh.

And Hydreigon is AWESOME, and Scrafty can be pretty terrifying to come up against.

I do hate Garbodor with a passion... But it doesn't ruin the series by any means.

...
Anyone else here that would have something Pokemon-related as a cutie mark?

I've been pretty excited for this little guy, and can't wait for the event to finally drop. I like the entire Musketeer family he's from, but I always liked Keledo best. I hope it'll be a catching event, not just traded to your game. I want to name him D'artagnan

@Ki

I love everything you just said. Let's be best friends forever?

janalybarger said...

Yeah. Keldeo. Along with Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion, it makes up the Musketeer Quartet. Known about them for quite a while. Keldeo was inspired by the "newbie" image that d'Artagnan is known for. Like how Cobalion was inspired by Athos, Terrakion by Porthos, and Virizion by Aramis.

Not meant to look/is not pony-related. They're Gen 5 Pokemon so they're not new. Looks like Nintendo's finally getting around to officially recognizing it so the Quartet can be completely official. They precede FiM. Sorry, Seth.

hurristat said...

@derp this is legit... It has been for a while.

Fengor said...

Just a heads up Seth, people have known about this legendary and another one since B&W were released last year. They're both in the game code for B&W and are currently only attainable through hacking. I believe this one's name is Keldo and rounds off the the trio of legendaries that are rough references to the three musketeers. Until now Nintendo had not officially announced Keldo's existence.

So no, it has nothing to do with MLP at all. Considering the release date for the games, he was conceived long before ponies hit the airwaves.

@Ki : I rather like this generation of Pokemon more so than gens 2-4 it feels like a return to the simplistic designs of the original 151. I hadn't played any of them since the RB&Y days and I was very pleased with the experience I got.

Anyway too bad I can't name it. Might have gone for Pinkie Pie (reminds me of her a little). Oh well. I do hope that thing becomes OU or Uber. I would rather not have to go up against it in a tournament. I can't even handle the genies or the other three deer things. By the way Seth, thank you for reminding me to get back to my team. I'm falling way behind schedule on that.

Multiversity said...

My personal favorite Pokémon are Blaziken and Electivire. Up until Black and White I could name all 490+ Pokémon in the national dex, and for a while I could say the same about the new Unove Pokémon. I'll still buy whatever games come out, but I've sort of lost interest in the series now that the TV show is insisting that Ash is still ten DESPITE HAVING COMPETED IN FOUR TOURNAMENTS THAT ONLY OCCUR ONCE A YEAR FIVE IF YOU COUNT ORANGE ISLANDS AND ALSO ACKNOWLEDGING NO LESS THAN THREE TIMES THAT A YEAR HAS PASSED IN THEIR WORLD.

Rant over. For anyone else who feels the need for accuracy, take note: to achieve the "é" character, hold ALT and press 1 3 0.

What I think they should do, right, is leave off introducing new Pokémon for a while and try to do new things with the games themselves. They could take a cue from the absurd popularity of the Mystery Dungeon games, for instance. Can you imagine how many people would buy a game that combined PMD's amazing story with, say, the graphics of PokéPark Wii? I bet you anything it would sell better than the last three generations combined.

Actually he's water/fighting, to go along with the /fighting trend of the musketeer trio.

Smashmatt202 said...

Did you NOT remember that picture I sent you by Raizy/Chu? Who basically pointed out that this Pokemon looked like a character from My Little Pony?

It was a few months ago, in the fandrawn stuff.

Mattwo said...

Keldeo is most likely based on a combination of the legend of the kelpie, a supernatural water horse that sometimes appeared as a lost pony, and a unicorn. Keldeo may also be inspired by the character of d'Artagnan from the novel The Three Musketeers. Like d'Artagnan, it is the latest and youngest addition to the group. Keldeo's tail also resembles d'Artagnan's trademark feathered cap.

Keldeo's name is probably derived from kelda, which means 'spring' in Old Norse, or kelpie, a water horse from Celtic folklore and the word rodeo, a sport involving skills with horses, cows and other livestock.

Generally most signs point to it being based on Kelpie and d'Artagnan

Mattwo said...

@mattwhite924 You're missing out on some other awesome Pokémon!

Xeddrief said...

@brilliantspecter That's not the issue people have. Sure, most of the new pokemon are very good in terms of gameplay- movesets, abilities, stats and EVs, etc. No one is doubting that the gameplay of the series has vastly improved. The issue is the DESIGN.

THE GOD AWFUL DESIGN.

Seriously, most of the new pokemon look like they were created by a three old. 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gens were awesome. 4th was very dodgy, although there where some good ones in there (Mainly the starters, legendaries, and a handful of others). 5th...god, I want to throw up when I look at it.

Not even the anime was safe, what with all the awesome voice actors we grew up with being chucked out and replaced with either deep monotone drawls or super squeaky annoying shrieks. Urgh.

Sorry for the rant, but I take my childhood memories very seriously.

also, keldeo isn't a new pokemon...everyone knew about him when black/white came out

brilliantspecter said...

@Xeddrief

Fair point. Though really, I don't tend to really enjoy Pokemon unless I like their design. So I guess what I was saying above was that I actually very much enjoy Vanilluxe's design. I personally believe Gen 5 is a lot like all of the other generations - mostly good with some derp here and there. There was plenty of derp back in the day, it's just harder to see through the tint of nostalgia spectacles.

I do agree in that I don't care for the show any more, though. But I think I outgrew that somewhere in third generation.

I take my childhood memories pretty seriously too, I guess. Only difference here is that I'm allowing mine to progress. Pokemon design will always be fun, if you ask me, even if the new Pokemon aren't exactly the same as the old.

That's Keldeo. Pretty powerful with an interesting type combination. It can do pretty good in the 5th gen metagame, since water pokemon kinda dominate the field there, but it lacks special attacks. It has 72 base attack and 129 base sp. attack. Still, no match for my team, I could OHKO Keldeo with my Salamence (assuming they are the same level) It's ability, justified, can be very handy though! What to do: Triple Battle, Keldeo in the middle, two Sneasels on the side. Have one of the Sneasels use beat up on Keldeo. It's attack will maximize, since it counts as 6 hits. That means 400% attack, or ±960 attack in lvl. 100. Just let Keldeo use surf and your opponent will have 3 Pokémon knocked out in 1 turn. This trick also works with Cobalion, Virizion and Terrakion.

I think I've typed enough!

Keldeo has existed in the games since they released but only now is he official. Seth said he doesn't follow pokemon very closely so it's natural that he would address it now.

Keldeo couldn't be referencing FiM in particular but he could be MLP-based, particularly if you interpret Genesect as being inspired by Transformers. And if not? Happy accident. I think Keldeo would make an awesome secret character for Fighting is Magic.

Yeah, Keldeo is older than MLP. But I don't blame you for not knowing, you would never know unless you know where to look. BTW, if you want to know more about Keldeo, check out this link:

Oh, man these people hating on the newer generations are making me laugh.

Terrible looking pokemon have existed since the begging. I played since the first generation. Heck I even bought a new yellow version two weeks ago because I honestly have no idea where my old one is. I cannot deny that there are just as many lame looking pokemon in the old days as there are now.

But then again, this game is called "Pocket Monsters", I don't exactly go into it expecting MONSTERS to be the epitome of great looking and/or super creative.

What is the Pokemons name?

Like what everyone else said, Keldeo, Meloletta (sp?) and Genesect were in the game code for years.

And I'm having this OMG IT'S A PONY, IT'S A REFERENCE TO MLP:FiM vibe. Oh no, not everything pony and unicorn reated it a reference to Friendship is Magic. It's like that Diablo 3 thing again. Next you will be saying Robot Unicorn Attack is a reference to MLP. Or even better, Ponyta.

Also, if you hate the newer Pokemon, then what about Jynx? That Pokemon is creepier than any fifth gen Pokemon.

@Dojorkan

This. Fetus Mew (green sprite Mew) and Jynx are creepy first gen Pokemon.

Finally Keldeo gets its official art revealed. Now for Meloetta and Genesect.

The first time I saw this pokemon I thought it looked like a MLP character. But that was before I liked FIM,I don't even think I even knew about FIM at the time. The similarities are just a coincidence.

Oops! Forgot that! I've got another interesting setup now: Double battle: Flareon and (Droght0 Ninetales. They switch in, sunlight intensifies, fire moves get 1.5X boost. Ninetales uses Ember on Flareon. Flash fire activates, Flareon's fire type moves power up by 1.5 x. Flareon uses Heat Wave, 2 Pokémon down! (Most of the time.)
