John De Lancie Talks about His Role as Discord

At a recent panel, someone asked John De Lancie about his role as Discord.  His response is pretty funny, along with the audience interaction.  Sadly the picture quality is terrible, but the audio is fine, and that's all the matters!

Check it out after the break.

That might've been how I reacted... if I wasn't Twilight's slave, that is. Hey, at least it pays well.

Agarwaen said...

Not sure if like or dislike.

But lol 6700 emails about pony.

Rainbow Blitz said...

Couldn't help but feel that that was slightly negative... =/

Mad Brochacho said...

JDL is actually very positive about bronies. It's just that he didn't have all that much time to speak so it made more sense to just joke about it and move on.

Hey, The TARDIS. lol

6700 emails, ouch. That poor email.

"It's a cartoon for little girls"

"No it isn't..."

Lmao.

Very cool and fun little snippet. The Bronies love Discord and John. :)

Dunno if its me, but Im not sure if that was negative or not...

Not the not talking about discord part since obviously thats not what the panel is about and thats logical.

He just seemed eh or ick about it, but that could just be me. Then again, if I got so many emails about only few moments role I did I wouldnt be to enthused either but still...man I dunno XD.

Q will be his best role always, sorry my fellow bronys, it the truth

That was pretty great. He's a funny guy in real life, so it makes sense.

(Also, I don't know if it's been said here yet, but check Tara Strong's latest tweets.)

Agarwaen said...

@sketchydee,
If I did a role that only took 2 hours to record I'd be overjoyed to get 6700-(probably up to 100k plus now) emails about it.

The Mechanic said...

@Rainbow Blitz

Unfortunately, I rather agree ith you on that one.
I don't think it was very positive at all.

Jaffacake said...

@Zignega

I think the cheers and whistles say otherwise. XD

Sarah said...

Wow...I know he didn't have a lot of dialogue but that it only took 2 hours? It always amazes me how actors time and space apart come together in an episode so organically.

His tone could be taken as a jab at the fandom I think it was all in fun. Don't become Discorded Pinkie! Laughter is laughter no matter if they're laughing with you or at you. *loves and tolerates*

Derpy Brony said...

John De Lancie has best voice. Did Dr. Hooves accidentally end up there or something?

Nostalgia Schmaltz said...

Wait so...when they hire guest voice actors, they don't even tell them what show they're voicing?

That's...disturbing.

Jeremy said...

I think John was just a little overwhelmed. The fact that he's going to be at BroNYCon shows he likes us somewhat.

Nostalgia Schmaltz said...

@Sarah

Voice Acting is the shortest part of production. It really does only take 1-3 hours to voice an episode, compared to weeks/months to finalize a script and then more weeks/months to complete the animation.

Truehearted said...

lulz...he was all like...wtf is this pony stuff

ArcaneArts said...

It's worth casually noting that a lot of people I know who work at conventions and have met John De Lancey consider him to be something of an asshole. Just saying.

DPV111 said...

He's not negative about it. He's been a major Star Trek character. He's just probably a bit desensitized to fans obsessing over his roles.

Sothalic said...

It's hard to take anything he says seriously anymore, really.

I'm still confused at people saying 6700 emails, I heard 'Six to seven hundred emails' myself, did I miss something?

CityFlyer502 said...

Good little snippet on John De Lancie talking about his role in the show. In my opinion, he didn't necessarily come off as negative about what he did. But he did seem hesitant to go into any further details about it. Granted, that's most likely because, as he put it, that wasn't what the panel was about. And I don't know about you, but I would be more than a little overwhelmed if a small role in a show garnered the kind of attention that this did. That said, I can't wait for his appearance at BroNYCon. So curious to see how he interacts with the con-goers.

I don't think he said "sixty-seven hundred e-mails." I think it was "six to seven hundred e-mails." That is, 600-700, and not 6700. Still, that's a heck of a lot for one inbox...

Stephen said...

Ah, I was _almost_ at Gally again this year, and if I had been I would have had a certain something to wear with me that may have gone down... interestingly :)

Altherix said...

I think someone did tell him after it came to light he was voice acting, "You have no idea what you've gotten into."

2 hours, yeah he was just approached, asked to do a voice for a character in the show, did it and thought he was done.

"It's a cartoon for little girls."

And I went, "No...it isn't."

Sounds like right there he realized about the fandom of the show. Personally, he sounded more surprised there was such a big deal about his voice acting.

Jigglysaint said...

That's what kind of makes me question why people go so crazy over voice actors. It's true that without their talents, the character doesn't come to life. From what I get impressions, a lot of them seem kind of dumbstruck that suddenly people are paying attention to them over something that they didn't even really think twice about. After all, really the only part they have in the production is what lines they have to say.

GabuEx said...

@Nostalgia Schmaltz

I highly doubt it's that they don't tell them what show they're voicing - they need to understand their character at a bare minimum, after all - but rather it's highly more likely that he just thought it to be a forgettable, throwaway role, and didn't remember doing it. Voice acting is one of the earliest parts of production, so it's highly likely that he had voiced the episodes months prior to their actual air date, which is plenty of time for him to forget all about having done that role.

Sigma Silver said...

I wonder if he ever worries he's being type-cast as maliciously whimsical omnipotent beings?

This may betray my ignorance of the voice acting biz, but how did he not know what show he was on? Is it the case that he just reads the lines they hand him without any idea of context or even what show they are for? If that is the case, coudos to the director for making all the charatcres sound like they are actually aware of what's going on around them.

acsinclair said...

Wow, just was watching him in an episode of Stargate SG-1 as Colonel Simmons when this was posted. Cool!

The Blue Horse said...

Ok here's the thing, i love this guy. He was Q on star trek and Discord so he's just awesome. And he's a funny guy too i mean just listen to him. John De lance rock on

SketchyDee said...

@Agarwaen

I would agree myself, but people react to things differently. Some might not enjoy all the attention they get. I guess its just me always fearing how the brony community comes off to the workers xD.

And with him coming to bronycon I doubt he was negative about it, or else he wouldnt even bother showing up, and surely he's use to this from the Star Trek fans, so maybe he's just use to this. Again, likely me being a worry wart and not wanting the people behind the show to hate us or something.

that and the panel wasnt about MLP so I understood why he didnt want to linger on it, it was more of his tone that made me think he was all "Oh god not this again..."

DeRockProject said...

Are the crowd cheering because he made fun of Bronies?

Praetorian_Pony said...

I felt he was really surprised and highly entertained by the response he got from it. As for him forgetting he did the role I felt like that was probably a joke, but that just how I saw it.

I don't feel like it was negative though I do feel like he spend much time on it since the panel was about something else. He was probably just trying to keep the panel on topic as much as possible. Also there had to be at least one brony there to ask the question. Man I really wish I could go to bronNYcon now.

D. McCarthy said...

You'd think that as a Star Trek alumni he'd be aware of the sheer force of fanbases.

The Seventh Wonderbolt said...

I'm sorry, but that sounded sort of negative to me. But then again, (I assume) De Lancie IS supposedly famous for being a villain

Now that that's out of the way...

I only could only survive about thirty seconds of exposure to Tara Strong's Twitter page before I could feel my brain beginng to go all melty on me. The post: "Dear Princess internet...oh no, help" was cute, though.

Beta-Carotene said...

Actually, I just had a thought. For all that are thinking he was "speaking negatively" about us, he was definitely not. It's exactly as he said, a neutral position. He's probably knows that people tend to have very strong feelings about bronies in both directions, and "taking sides" with either of them would probably not do a great deal of good.

Besides, most anybody who's actually seen the show understands us, and he's definitely at least watched his own episode :)

Admiral Stoic "El Cazador" Rum said...

so, basically, John did not have a clue to what he was working on...but still performed admirably...

Zecora Zebra said...

It seems that to most people (even Dr. Who nerds), a Brony is still just some sort of sexual pervert who likes this one kids' show. Kind of a cross between pedophile and furry.

That's how his description and the audience reaction struck me.

BronyBraeburn said...

He's so awesome, I'll never survive Bronycon. I'll be too busy squealing with fangirl delight.

RustyParker said...

"Discord! What ever did we do, to make you take it all away~~~???"

Tundra said...

"25-50 year old men who watch My Little Pony and have a lot to say about it."
Yep. That's about as neutral a statement as you can make about the fandom.

DCNPony said...

I can only imagine the experience he had with us. I think he took it rather well, and was nice enough to put it in "diplomatic terms". Thanks!

Stefan said...

I don't think it was negative at all, he was just expressing how weirded out he was at the whole thing when he got e-mails about MLP.

Very funny to listen to, though!

GrapePie said...

Didn't sound all that neutral... Sounded more like he's making fun of us. But ah well... If he's showing up at Brony-con he can't possibly hate us?

Zecora Zebra said...

@GrapePie

Oh, I'm sure he doesn't hate the money.

lastunusedmane said...

He just sounds like that? All the time? He does a damn fine job voicing a damn fine character on one of the damnedest fine shows in recent memory in only two hours? And he DOESN'T EVEN REMEMBER IT!?

I either love this guy, am insanely jealous or am some unholy blend of the two. Probably that last one.

Krieve said...

He wasn't being negative. I mean if you were in his shoes, voicing a cartoon character and suddenly receiving a fleet of emails regarding a children's show written with the maturity of an adult, you'd be weirded out too. He didn't say anything negative at all. It was just a neutral statement explaining the hilarity of the situation.

mycutiemarkisagun said...

This is fucking hilarious. XD

I loved his character on Breaking Bad too! (the poor guy...)

magnus_dune said...

lol his laugh is great!

hyreia said...

If he agreed to come talk at BronyCon I highly doubt he felt very negatively about us.

I think we just expected to hear an opinion when he didn't give one? No opinion isn't a bad opinion. His unwillingness to talk about it isn't negative the situation was just inappropriate.

You have to remember the cartoon isn't nearly as big of a deal to him as it is to us.

I liked Star Trek: TOS. I've been meaning to watch the Next Generation episodes with Q in them. Thanks for the reminder.

mycutiemarkisagun said...

Bronys, plz check ur butthurt at the door and learn to take a joke. Don't be like the Trekkies that flipped out at Shatner's "Get a life!" SNL sketch. Love & Tolerance, remember?

Nyxilis said...

Funny stuff. Though for people thinking he was negative? Not really, teasing certainly, but if he was that negative about it he wouldn't be attending the upcoming con. His responses on the net were generally positive. He just knows his crowds, he is a crowd worker. Saying what the crowd wanted to hear about it really and getting plenty of laughs. I bet he'll be a hoot later on.

mycutiemarkisagun said...

Dionysus said...

Well, that was kind of disappointing ... sounds like Lancie can't even remember his role as Discord, and what's worse it really sounds like he and the audience are making fun of us.

Too bad really, but oh well~

Kyronea said...

@Sigma Silver
That's not quite what he meant. What he meant was that he never thought about the role after he did it initially. He most likely recorded his lines several months prior to the premiere, prior even to the leak of NEWS that he was involved with the role.

So for him when he first did the role, it didn't seem consequential. He voice acted, was paid, and that was it and he didn't have to think about it anymore. It was just another quick job he did.

Until the fandom awoke, and sounded its voice.

FamusJamus said...

This reminds me of Unicron's voice actor from the '80s Transformer movie.

Anyone who thinks this was negative should go and look that up.

GrubbusTheUnclean said...

@FamusJamus

Yeah, no kidding. If people want to compare some real horror stories, just look up Tom Clancy. I know a former FBI agent who met him, and Clancy made it clear he knew "better" than the real experts about security.

There's a difference between saying something really nasty, and kind-of-sort-of coming across as arrogant to a fan.

Vermillion Twilight said...

I heard John Delance and saw the TARDIS in the background and my heart jumped a little bit. I really wish that meant he'd be guest starring in a future episode of Doctor Who, though I guess it's just because he was in an episode of the Who-spinoff series Torchwood.

Corey Sewell said...

@Beta-Carotene

That's the vibe I got. He was cautious not to say anything negative. And he didn't want to go off on a tangent or sidetrack the panel either. He summed what he knew about us as he knew it with a bit of humor on the side. I thought it was quite well spoken.

Rubystars said...

The brony community isn't just men. There are women like me (also known as pegasisters) that enjoy watching the show too, and appreciate its sophistication.

I get a little weary of the fandom only being recognized as a male phenomenon.

I do think that that he was making fun of bronies. He's obviously not really a fan of the show himself, just considered it to be another job to do when he did Discord's voice. I don't think he went too far but I suppose he had the same reaction to the existence of bronies that many people do. I think even Ashleigh Ball was a bit surprised by the existence of broneis when she first heard about them.

SunnuvaBiscuit said...

You gotta face it that not everyone who works on the show will always have a positive reaction to the fandom. Truth be told I'm a bit negative on the Brony fandom as a whole too, with those that I've met. I'm sure there's some great, awesome Bronies out there but I've yet to meet one in person.

JDL is entitled to his opinions, whatever they are, of the Brony fanbase. I don't think he sounded very negative. More neutral, myself.

Blankments said...

I can't make it to BronyCon, unfortunately, but someone there should inform John de Lancie that he won an award for his two-hour recording... I wonder what his response would be, lol.

Award here, btw: http://www.toonzone.net/forums/showthread.php?291309-Toonzone-Awards-2011-Results!

MLP won seven awards there in total... Wonder why it was never mentioned in a roundup or something. Oh well. :)

I'd argue Discord has even fewer limitations than Q. Remember: If Q went too far, he ran the risk of angering the Continuum and getting his powers stripped away. Also, the ST: TNG special effects budget also posed some limitations on what was possible for Q to do.

Discord had no Continuum to worry about and ANYTHING is possible with animation.
