• Derpy HAS been modified

Earlier a post went up pointing out that The Last Roundup was released on iTunes finally.  Sadly, it looks like she was actually modified.  Her voice is different, and Rainbow Dash no longer names her.

This was in the SD version, I am not sure if the HD on my laptop is different.  I am currently re-downloading it in HD To double check on my computer.

You can find the new Derpy after the break.

UPDATE: Both versions of the episode have been modified.

UPDATE 2: As a reminder, The Friendship Express DVD is untouched, Derpy is still Derpy (At least in the ones we got, which are pretty much the same as far as we know)

    4. Some people were okay with her new voice because it sounds less down-syndrome-y... What's funny is that I have a friend who has down-syndrome; his name is Joshua. His favorite character was Derpy, because "she's so silly".
*facepalm* I can't believe that they would get rid of Derpy like that... One of the greatest things about her was her voice, being that it was a derp in and of itself. Her cross-eyed demeanor, her happy, yet clumsy personality... They pulled it off so well the first time. If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go sign a few petitions and then pretend this "fix" never happened.

    5. After hearing the new voice many times.... I suppose I could get used to it. I actually almost like it though I still prefer her original. The derp eyes are still there but not as severe.... I can live with that as long as they are not eliminated.

The only thing that kinda irks me is that they removed her name. :(

I'm not mad at the animation team and the writers at all since it wasn't there choice and they love us bronies. Also, as long as Hasbro only did this from legitimate parental concerns sent in and not because of crazy political correctness advocates.... then I can't be mad at them either.

I can't really understand the removal of the name in any light but the voice I can honestly overlook. If the change of the voice means more possible Derpy speaking roles in the future, then I can't do anything but support the change... though I do hope they include her name again in the future.

    6. You can even tell by Rainbow's voice that Ashleigh Ball thinks the whole thing is bullshit. Like Derpy was ever really offending anyone. It was just some bored, underpaid, whiney-ass widow mothers that needed something to put down, so they snagged this opportunity.

ok you guys, we all appreciate your willingness to respond to issue a lot of us had over Derpy's voice in the The Last Roundup episode, and we love you for that!

The original version of Derpy's voice most consider to be a tragic accident. As people we try learn from our mistakes and it pleases me that your attempting to do so for the fans sake.

This new voice is in my opinion a step in the right direction to a better relationship between the fans and yourselves. Please continue working with, "The Last Roundup" episode as we believe giving it the much love and attention it deserves will positively affect the overall quality of the show, and the re-pore between the staff and the fans who support the show.

We the fans support your endeavors to make "my little pony: friendship is magic" the best possible show it can be and encourage everyone at Hasbro, and affiliated, to strive to do the same.

    9. Hasbro and The MLP did`nt want this,Apple wanted it changed for the itunes version.

      ReplyDelete
    10. IMO, if iTunes wanted it changed, the Hasbro should have pulled the series and reposted it on Vudu or Google Vids or Amazon Live. Apple is not the morality police. By caving to Apple, if true, Hasbro took the easy way out and did it in a sloppy fashion; NOT a lesson I want my kids to learn. If you want to make some changes to Derpy I am not against it. But I am 100% against the method used. Kids need to be shown Derpy sharing her voice with a mute pony so they both end up with new voices, or Rainbow helps Derpy get more agile as part of her Wonderbolt training, or Derpy sees Dinky about to fall out of the CMC treehouse and focuses her eyes so hard to make the catch that they stay uncrossed. This modifies the character exactly in the way that Hasbro/iTunes/PC people seem to want but justifies it within the boundaries of a child's perspective. As an adult brony, you can tell me Derpy is not PC and if you are Hasbro I can't stop you from hack editing her. As an adult brony you can chop Derpy in half with a guillotine and I will be okay. But as a brony parent of child fans, when kids see the method that was used to modify her, which was a late- night back-alley hack-job edit with no explanation (and I promise you ALL child fans have already seen the original!) they will ask "WHY", and the only option to tell them there is no Santa Claus and that its ok to "fix" people that might seem different than you to maximize profits with no regard for how children see their favorite show. It was not an unacceptable thing to change Derpy a bit. But it was undeniably a sloppily and needlessly rushed edit ordered voluntarily without legal force by Hasbro that disregarded an appreciation of how kids look at the show and didn't consider how easy it would have been to make the changes they felt were needed within the boundaries of the show.

    11. @RedBaron1010 Baron, I too already prepurchased the DVD (from Amazon, NOT iTunes) for the reasons you listed. I would not find it unbelievable if Hasbro secretly planned this entire edit to cause a fervor to increase DVD sales, which at the end of the day is normal business method for all companies - maximize sales. I hope if true this means they are planning some kind of staged "apology" move which will include marketing a Derpy plushie or brushable, because I think everyone knows how many of those would sell.....

      ReplyDelete
    12. @Hawklaser
Seriously, you are looking too much into it. Hasbro is just trying to play safe. Just like most companies do these days. It has nothing to do with "different people need to be erased".

Most people who are offended by Derpy are not offended by her crossed eyes or even her being clumsy. They are offended because the only pony with crossed eyes is portrayed as an idiot with speech issues.

So yeah, comparing this to Hitler..no, just no.

      ReplyDelete
    13. I don't like the new voice, it's too generic, the old one was better. Also, dislike when they cut out Derpy's name being used by Rainbow. The people who demanded it be cut out were offended by the term Derp and were also pissed about her voice, which is stereotypically attributed to the mentally challenged. They would rather employ the idea to their kids that the world out to be full of perfectly mentally stable people, and that when there is a retard, they are completely different, rather than have them acknowledge the fact that the world is full of those who are at a disadvantage and that they can still be fully accepted by society and their friends. It sickens me.

      ReplyDelete
    14. @Ki
I understand that Hasbro would be playing it safe by doing this, and it is disappointing that they had to do this.

I do not like political correctness, and how sue happy some are which leads to changes like this. Which leads to the unintentional sending of messages like the one I was trying to point out.

I highly doubt that Hasbro wanted to send any message close to "different people need to be erased", but the edit still sends/reinforces the message of only normal people are acceptable, even if it is an unintentional message. And the fact it was even sent at all will be forgotten by the majority of people fairly quickly, or they will be completely unaware of it. That does not change that the message was still sent.

You also missed the point of what I was trying to get across as well. The point is if messages like you have to be normal to be accepted or functional in society keep getting sent, eventually the atrocities committed by Hitler will stop looking like atrocities. It has nothing to do with why people were offended by Derpy, or even the difference between a clumsy pony with an odd voice, and your stereotypical dumb blonde character, it has to do with the ripples that the action of making the change to not upset the applecart sends out. Have to remember one action can create a chain reaction of effects, and sometimes the effects can be very subtle.

    15. I don't mind that they changed the voice, but getting her to be Officially named Derpy was a pet project that the fans worked on since they first spotted her. I don't know how the term "Derp" can be offensive to anybody since I never heard of anybody with disabilities been deemed "Derpy". That makes as much since as calling Dopey whoopsie or Goofy awkward single parent. Why am I saying this someone may ask? Simple in my past experience the term "Derp" was used on someone who "goofed up" or is "clumsy". Now if she was named "Retard" then you'd have something to be up in arms about.

    17. Ammending my last comment.

Derpy and/or derp is not an offensive or derogatory term used to describe or demoralize people with mental disabilities. Derp is the same as (the more modern equilivent of) saying "my bad", an admission of making a mistake regardless of mental ability. Derpy was "birthed" from a mistake, an animation error in the very first episode and was named accordingly. She is the Mascot of the Brony Community, but is not to be viewed as being mentally handicapped. The character she has been given is that of the lovable goof-ball, who makes mistakes but has a big heart. She is a loving mother, has a host of friends, and maintains steady employment. If you think that she is mentally disabled, then she is a shining example of what one can accomplish in-spite of said disability and is not an insult.
Derpy can be compared to Disney's Goofy in both name and personality. Her name is simply a reflection of her clumsiness not her mental functions. No one complains or even compares Goofy to the mentally handicapped in name nor deed. Goofy is clumsy and makes mistakes, he "goofs". The same is with Derpy, she "Derps".
Like I said Derpy is sort of the mascot of the Bronies and our connection to MLP:FiM and its creators. This is a connection not seen in other shows, taking advantage of the internet and its ability to bring people together. Allowing us to talk with the show creators and for them to talk to us. Especially with season 2 we feel that we have a stronger connection to the show and it's production team through Derpy. It is like a friendship. When she was given actual dialogue and was named on screen durring "The last Round-up" it was like that connection had grown to a whole new level. A character created by fans actually officially made its way into the show, it was like magic. Now with that ground breaking scene altered it feels like that connection, that friendship, has been hammered.
Removing her name, striating her eyes and, yes, even changing her voice removes what physically made Derpy... Derpy. It also sends a bad image to viewers at home, worse then some misinformed person taking offense to the character. It says that only "perfect" "normal" people are socially acceptable, those that are not must be changed to fit this image. This is contrary to one of the underlining messages of FiM: that there is more then one way to be a girl (and by extension person).

So please Hasbro, changed Derpy back. If people complain tell them that it is not an insult to the mentally challenged but a play on modern slang for making a mistake.

      ReplyDelete
    18. Taking out the name wasn't that bad. It wasn't that GOOD because the whole point of that scene was the she was "Derpy Hooves". In more than just name, given her her clumsiness. There's no point taking out the name but keeping the actual derps.

But...I'm going to say that if that was all that had happened, the scene would've lost its meaning, but it would've have been awful.

I rather like the voice, but I never thought too hard on Derpy's voice in the first place. Bon-Bon and the flower ponies' voices change every damn episode. It could happen to Derpy as well.

Its the EYES that's going to far! What? But...SHE'S BEEN CROSS EYED ALL THOSE TIMES AS A BACKGROUND PONY! I mean...which idiot specifically said "uncross those eyes". Ah, yes. Because we've never seen those eyes before.

Actually, it's not totally out of nowhere, because those eyes have at times straightened themselves out for periods of time.

      ReplyDelete
    19. I don't mind the new voice for someone else. But Derpy is DERPY. They made her one way, and it's annoying they changed it. Now I want to complain about how they're making fun of blondes. I mean, really? If someone's going to go after her eyes, I'm gonna complain abou her hair color. It was endearing when it was Derpy. Now it's just offensive.

      ReplyDelete
    20. I guess I can accept changing the voice. People will take offence at things, even if it's unintended. But why did they have to change the eyes? That's the whole reason why people loved the character! It feels like an overreaction to an overreaction.

      ReplyDelete
    21. REAL TALK: you can contact the Hasbro spokeswoman who made the statement to Gawker if you want her to give a better explanation about Derpy. Her contact info is public. BE FUCKING POLITE AS IT WAS ALMOST CERTAINLY NOT HER CALL TO MAKE THE CHANGES, AND ANGER WILL BACKFIRE. And maybe warn her about the troll responses she might get and that things like 4chan trolls were probably a lot of the complaints to begin with.

Please stress that Derpy is considered by the fandom to be a _positive_ character, as exampled by the sketch Lauren Faust drew for charity that raised $2100 for victims of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, or the fact that the most popular youtube fan voice has admitted she is a former special-ed student who considers Derpy to be a positive role model, and most of all that Derpy is a rallying point for fans who might feel less than perfect in their everyday lives (like Derpy would) but still have the wherewithal to preach love and tolerance in the face of adversity.

Releasing this info, despite it technically being public, is a bit of a gambit, but if you want to drop Hasbro spokeswoman Nicole Agnello a line at [email protected], I suppose there is nothing to lose at this point. AND BE FUCKING POLITE AND ARTICULATE, AND STRESS THAT DERPY IS A POSITIVE SYMBOL, and that she lies at the core values of Friendship, Love, and Tolerance as much as any other character on FiM.

    27. I don't understand why they would change her if people were offended that she was handicapped(implied) then i think parents of handicapped children should be furious that hasbro would change her. what does that tell kids? That and I'm confused wasn't she already named Ditzy Doo? And if they're going to take characters for being handicapped then what about the show Ed, Edd, and Eddy?

    29. I am fine with them changing her voice, but I wish they had kept her name =( if anything they could have used it as a chance to show people that derp doesn't mean retarded. In fact I think that it would be great to have a derpy specific episode, that shows how she is loved and accepted by all the other ponies, and use her as a way to show that you dont have to be perfect to be treated like everypony else. It could actually be a very good lesson I think.

    31. Ashleigh Ball seems rushed, confused, and even a bit sad when she's redoing this scene.

Derpy's voice was originally good. The modified version sounds unprofessional, half-hearted, and just plain unnatural. This type of voice does not need to be in a cartoon. They usually refrain to make cartoon characters sound normal. This one sounds like my kindergarten teacher. She doesn't sound clumsy, ditzy, and it just doesn't fit.
Sure, her original voice was very deep, but I liked it. I LOVED it. It just...fit for me.

The bronies who approve of this retake clearly don't know a good cartoon voice when they hear it. I mean, it sounds like a fangirl who has no acting backround history. She doesn't sound like she's Derpy Hooves.
Just remember...When you can't choose, please refer to Ren and Stimpy's voice acting.

    38. @Fredward that's probably right. Sigh.. Hasbro wasn't using its common sense, was it? Don't they no you can't satisfy everyone? What's a few complaints worth when thousands more people like it? Although, the voice change was going to happen, anyways, sooner or later, once they realized the voice actress had been going for a male instead of a female voice.

    40. Incredible that people thinks correct the change in Derpy Hooves, perhaps when a friend of yours do not like her voice or her appearance, you asked to operate her face and change the name just because you don’t like it.
I think a true friend accept his friend in all senses physically and emotionally, does not want to change anything.
