Forbes Article on Pony, Skyrim, and Sopa

I saw Flutterdragon in my nightmares last night.  It was not an enjoyable experience.

The same guy that did the UK Wired Pony article wrote a new one for Forbes, dedicated to pony, Skyrim, and Sopa. On top of an already excellent piece on how Hasbro is dealing with our "little" demographic here, he also landed a full interview with Linda Steiner, the Executive Vice President for MLP at Hasbro.  (She totally calls it "pony" too, they should just adopt that name!).

Both are excellent reads, so head on over to the article and give your eyes some love.  It has been what, five days since the last episode? They could use it!

Looks like Kotaku did it too!

Pretty cool article, and the Flutterdragons are awesome.

I wish I had a game console and/or computer powerful enough to play Skyrim.

I pointed this out this morning and noted that Hasbro's stance on youtube episodes is that they are more after the HD ones that compete with the iTunes offerings.

Which is completely fair on their part.

@Howdy
RPS, VG247 and Eurogamer also reported on the Mod this morning

Good article indeed. "Death on fluttery goldenrod wings" made me chuckle.

yay.

maybe our kind of success can help keep things the way they are.

Four articles of "wow." That's what I've just read here. Pretty significant coverage of the series and the fandom. And they were pretty well written. They do concede that our following of My Little Pony unexpected, but they don't go after us like some of the other articles that are floating around out there. They did some research and even gave us some media to refer to. Thumbs up to them.

Cool new banner

Happy 1 year anniversary

"This is why people want to ban genetic experimentation on animals, you know."

That made me giggle. :P

But yeah, it's a great article that makes a lot of sense.

I still wonder why I like MLP.

It really makes no sense. But, then again, it doesn't have to, because ponies.

Both articles were very amusing and informative. These Hasbro chaps have a phenomenal sense for responding to their prospective consumers.

TThe Linda interview was really cool. Nothing really new was said, but cool none the less.

Really interesting article, really lays out the level of magical thinking required to seriously believe SOPA or anything else could restore copyright protection to what that meant before the internet.

Travis Smith said...

@Masquerade
You changed back from Guy-Ra?

Mysecsha said...

@Masquerade

Exactly. Because ponies.

Why? Because ponies.

ALL QUESTIONS SOLVED FOREVER.

CityFlyer502 said...

@Masquerade Maybe the though sneaks into my mind. But therein lies the key phrase. Ponies just make sense. Simple as that.

"We also need to feel our blood run cold at the sound of the beating of tiny pony wings over the frozen fields of Skyrim."

Best. Quote. Ever.

PONIES PONIES PONIES

Well... I think that's a record.

@Travis Smith
Eeyup. Guy-ra's great and all, but I've got to stay true to my name.

@Mysecsha & CityFlyer502
Exactly, because ponies.

Here's the secret: honesty, kindness, laughter, generosity, loyalty, magic -- those are the things that make sense. It's the world that rejects them that's insane.

This is so awesome! I saw this article on Forbes at school and was hesitant to click on it. I did anyways! Good article: pro pony, anti SOPA- What more could ya want?

He makes a good point. If it wasn't for Fallout: Equestria I would never have gone to the shop and bought every Fallout pc game bar new vegas.

I refuse to give Kotaku money from my view, but the other article is good.

Just what I need for the dissertation essay that I'm doing, on the remix culture. Thanking you for the articles!

See, that's how you do a well written, respectful article on the subject of the fandom. Well done, Forbes Writer.

i love this guy's articles
he's supporting ponies and hating on SOPA

The writer made some great points. I love me some pony positivity, but I also love how he pointed out that "Flutterdragon" probably led to a lot of people purchasing Skyrim who might not have done so otherwise. And in turn, Hasbro gets some promotion for its biggest property (besides maybe Transformers). If I was the head of either side, I would be loving this just like they probably are.

Good article... It almost feels like the author's a Brony.

Kevin Moore said...

"My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is currently showing on Cartoon Network's Boomerang channel boomerangtv.co.uk" what the heck?

Daniel Nye Griffiths said...

Thanks for your comments, all! I wouldn't claim to be a Brony myself - I don't think I've put in the hours - but I have enormous admiration for Lauren Faust and her team's ability, and am hugely impressed by the quantity and quality of the work produced by the Bronies and (and I hope I've got the terminology right) Pegastisters; also, from a relative outsider's perspective, the way that the community and the property are interacting is fascinating to watch.

if theres something im gonna hate its SOPA

Dyxid said...

Well now this bit was very interesting...

"Hasbro has largely embraced the phenomenon. Uploads of the episodes to YouTube are largely ignored as long as they do not use or impinge on the high-definition versions sold through iTunes."

...I didn't stop to consider the quality of the episodes that got pulled, in that they probably don't mind people putting up logo'd TV quality recordings, but understandably have an issue with the stuff from the iTunes store being ripped and shared wholesale.

That... that is worth nothing but mad props, they condone low-scale sharing and only object to what *would* be considered high-scale pilfering. Hasbro may have just found that happy medium in this digital realm of copyrights, the proverbial "having your cake and eating too".

Hawklaser said...

@Hawkeye92
You not the only one ponies influenced to get into other things. Ponies got me into the Dresden Files and Doctor Who.

@Dyxid
Hopefully that is indeed the case. And if it is, hopefully that mindset spreads.

Best SOPA article I have ever read.
Best article period I have read in the past year or so.

"No doubt even as we speak some hardcore bronies are buying copies of Skyrim for the chance to be incinerated by the shy, animal-loving member of the ‘Friendship is Magic’ crew."

This is true. I want Skyrim SO BAD now! Times like this I hate owning a Mac. *Checks Steam page to see if they ported it yet*

@Dyxid

This cheered me right up. I thought Hasbro has being strangely particular in what they took offline.

I do remember iTunes rips being prime targets for being taken down first.

You know...this makes me feel all kinds of warm fuzzies for Hasbro. I think more people absolutely need to hear this! :)

I still say we should strongly encourage folks to watch on The Hub and buy episodes legally, but it's cool that Hasbro also embraces the fandom so much. It's still so awesome to hear that they really love seeing the latest in fan content. :)

But... won't we have to kill Fluttershy now? :(
