Blogger's Surprise Comment Change!

As some of you probably noticed, Blogger released a new comment system with threading.  Now the idea of that is neat, I love threading on other sites, but they sort of did it... half way.

On a site like EQD where posts can hit 500 comments+ easy, removing the "page" feature just doesn't work, and it looks like they completely axed that in favor of the "show more comments" thing.

For now, the only way to revert it to the old is to remove the embedded comment box at the bottom of posts, and have it appear in a popup window.  You probably have already noticed that if you have tried to comment!  Until they fix it, we will have to stick with that.

You may need to turn off certain blockers, though my current firefox security setup seems alright with it.

Hopefully they will fix this up some.  I fired off my feedback to their group.

Hmm. Something new to get used to I guess.

awww you're such a tease Seth, for a second I thought we could actually reply and have ponies notice XP

Jay6 said...

Err... weird. I'm not liking this much...

MattTheCat said...

Maybe I can comment now?

Leonstia said...

Who is that? Not Nyx, right?

Kelleth said...

I almost thought I wasn't logged in due to that change lol :P

Daisymare said...

Yeah this is kinda annoying.

CityFlyer502 said...

I guess just as long as we can still comment, we'll be all right. Sure, something new to get used to. But I'm sure it's nothing we can't handle.

wackypony said...

wait, pop-up windows? ewww...

tell them go buck their pop up window. i only liked it when i was replying.

mattwhite924 said...

The pop-up is a little bit annoying, but not really a big deal. Hopefully you can get everything worked out with Blogger fairly easily.

RavensDagger said...

Noo! Brohhof is hard to reach now!
We were so close to capping another post!

ScootalooIsBestPony said...

I personally liked the new comment system, but I guess the old one was fine...

CityFlyer502 said...

@wackypony Seth did say he made a comment to the Blogger guys. It's possible they're looking into it. But who knows.

Mobile interface seems WAAAAAAAY more user-friendly

Mrph. That explains all the wackiness lately.

I hope this gets sorted out soon.

James Corck said...

Well that's new.

I can easily adapt to this, it could be way worse. We couldn't be allowed to comment at all!

I'm okay with this for now until they fix it.

CityFlyer502 said...

@Kyronea Yeah, hopefully. Figures this happened on the day of the 100 million. Probably Blogger's way of celebrating?

Toxic-Mario said...

Looks like we gotta get used to it. Deal with it.

wackypony said...

it is so odd not having the box down their. :[

*goes and cries in a corner*

wackypony said...

@Toxic-Mario

imma deal with it by bitching, moaning, whining, and crying.

I like the pop-ups, it makes it less easy for me to derp and strike the back-a-page key (keyboard has one, not the backspace key but an actual key devoted solely to going back a page... and it's just under shift). Better this than what they put in place!

Stargel said...

Can't say that I find it really appealing as a comment system. Very temporally I should hope for the time being until a proper fix is in order.

Celestia said...

Ach, I really dislike this popup way of commenting.

There aren't too many posts that end up warranting 200+ comments but when they do tey tend to skyrocket well beyond that so I can see why it might be needed.

Can't say I like this way of doing it though, feels clunkier, guess i'll also have to get over my habit of pressing the comments to open the post and not the post itself.

Wierdplatformer said...

I was wondering why everything had gone white...

MikeDee said...

it works on smartphone.

Bombedrumbum said...

Well, if they remove the 5000 comment cap limit, then i'll be a bit more happy

Sunset Sprinkles said...

I don't like the pop-up idea. I'm on mobile, so that'd be pretty tedious...

airace said...

Come now everyone, we must simply think /outside of the box!/

Slots said...

This is pretty bad actually, especially if you run a RP blog such as me and my group, it is hell right now...

CityFlyer502 said...

@airace We could also try thinking inside the chimney.

Celestia said...

One additional thing, this is going to take all the fun out of those title lacking picture posts.

Darnit Blogger, get something right for once.

EonMaster said...

I'm fine with this. The popup is the exact same as when I would want to reply to another comment anyways.

Sunset Sprinkles said...

And just when the comment system was really nice, too...

Overlong Analysis Cobalt said...

Oh, and I'm not a huge fan of threading, not unless it's... I dunno, something you can turn off. It makes reading new replies in a comments section way, way harder, because the new stuff can be scattered all over the place instead of always being below the last comment you read.

Sir Le Flour said...

This is strange... I prefer the old system but Bloggers gonna Blogger.Nothing gonna change that.

Sgt Byrd said...

Those who use Tab Mix Plus for Firefox should be careful with settings, if you restrict Javascript popus you could create the annoying behaviour of the comment popup going in a new tab, which isn't really useful.

That in mind, I like the way it is now. Having that popup for comments allows the blogger comment enhancer greasemonkey script to work, as the popup is on a blogger.com page. It didn't work on the embed comment box as the embed was on equestriadaily.com and not blogger.com.

If that embed comment box is ever returned, could the link for the popup be left just beneath it as an alternative?

Sethisto said...

popup isn't too bad. I'm sure they will lookin into this.

Equestria Daily versus comments systems - round 2, FIGHT!

Tundra said...

What's the big deal?
It's not that hard to type a comment.
I've been typing in the pop-up anyway.
*shrugs*

Biglulu said...

This is fail. Kill it with fire!

Masterge77 said...

No way, I LOVE the new comments system, it's so much easier to use!

The Numberman said...

@gillnavisingh I've noticed that too. Much better.

D. Shadows said...

I've been doing it in pop up for while now. Unfortunately the havoc of having semi-reliable machines on a heavily trafficked site may have caused some issues with me in the past.

But I'm supposedly evil enough to force the computer to work anyway, that is until it explodes like a previous one or two before it.

CityFlyer502 said...

@Biglulu I'm caught a little off guard with the change, but I wouldn't call it a fail. Not to sound pushy or anything, but let's just deal with it and get on with the commenting.

Not Trixie said...

Oh good. I thought I was going insane.
Also, the mobile site looks different now.

Mac3030 said...

Well this is... interesting. Its not too bad, I'll manage, but I'll look forward for Blogger to fix this or revert back to the old Blogger

MasterofRoku said...

So, no more pages then?
Meh, I was fine with the other comment system.

OtterMatt said...

I'm not a huge fan of pop-ups, but I AM a huge fan of threaded replies. I like knowing if people are trying to have a conversation, or at least agree with somepony else.

KRODERSERK said...

There isn't much difference on mobile.
At least with the browser I'm using.

Flutterguy said...

Omg it is so much better for the iPhone now, I hope they never change it.

Fleymevas said...

Threading is where one comment will appear directly below another if said comment is a reply. Right?

Sgt Byrd said...

@Fleymevas

Yup, aka nesting, as the replies get put at a sublevel to indicate they are child comments.

The mobile version of the site keeps the new system I believe.

Freaking Chrome is overrated.

O. Hinds said...

Thanks Seth!
For some reason, the embedded comment box never worked for me anyway, so this isn't really much of a problem as far as I'm concerned.

Octavia said...

Bleh, I really don't like this new popup comment box. I like being able to click on the comments and it redirecting me to the entire post on a new page, simply with all the comments under it. I hope it can be changed back to the old style before too long. This make it harder and more quirky to comment for me.

Mike said...

lol, I have no idea what's going on.

...but Discord's clearly winning!

Cedric Bale said...

Having to open this comment window isn't so bad. It's not as convenient, but it's hardly a bother.

kb said...

@CityFlyer502

this is not very useful.

LordOfTheWrongs said...

I can live with that until they get their horseapples together. The colored comment boxes are kind of pleasing.

Chris said...

Huh...................

Š © Ґ E w þ Æ ᄂᄂ said...

I dunno, I kinda like it. It looks nice, but the popups a bit annoying.

Jimperator said...

Not that big of a deal to me. I like the colored text boxes though.

Tails66 (Landon) said...

Sweet, new comment system is pretty cool.

Ten said...

Aye I wondered why the comment system had turned pop up since I last was on here.

Aegis Steadfast said...

@Leonstia

Nope, that's my ponysona under the effects of a flight spell, Aegis Steadfast.

ClosetBrony said...

Whatever they changed is also preventing the individual posts from open in the Blackberry OS6 browser. The main pages shows briefly before redirecting to the mobile version. Clicking any of the posts to read them acts like it is going to open the desktop version but when it redirects to the mobile version all I see is a blank, white page. Have to suffer EqD withdrawal until I get on a computer! "The horror!"

ThatBronyDude said...

hmmmmmm being new to blogger in general I haven't really had enough time to actually use to old system enough to where I would never choose anything else just enough to miss it,soooooooo my reaction, meh I like the old one better.

The Double scroll is kinda anoying, But within the week everyone will have adjusted and moved on.

Akamaru01 said...

This is pretty wierd

Nyerguds said...

The popup box should jump to the #form label though, so you don't have to scroll all the way down first.

Sgt Byrd said...

@Nyerguds

At the top of the popup there is a jump to comment form link, which will take you to the comment form.

Gamax92 said...

@Sethisto
Isin't there settings for the blogs to disable popup-commenting?

Sgt Byrd said...

Soooooo, now you put the comment box back in, but you got rid of the links between comment pages XD. Sounds like technical difficulties are winning, derp.
