Story: Empty Skies (Update Part 4!)

[Adventure][Light Grimdark]

Author: Heliostorm
Description: A thousand years ago, Nightmare Moon made a deal with the stars: to let them rule Equestria in eternal night in exchange for breaking her free from her prison on the moon. But when Nightmare Moon was defeated by the Elements of Harmony, she could no longer fulfill her end of the bargain, and neither Celestia nor Luna have any intention of letting the stars dominate their world. Now the stars have arrived to take what was promised to them—by any means necessary...

This is an interesting premise, nothing like anything i've seen before.

This looks interesting...

Sounds interesting. I usually avoid stories with "grimdark" tags as I watch/read ponies to brighten up my life, but this sounds like such a good premise I am willing to make an exception. I will let you know my thoughts after I read it later.

That...
Is a really, really awesome concept.

INDEPENDENCE DAY... WITH PONIES!

I'm hoping Rainbow Dash is Will Smith.

INDEPENDENCE DAY WOOT!

It certainly seems an interesting premise, will have to add this to the list of fics to follow

Independence Day?

Now this I gotta see.

Now that's an intriguing concept.

Not bad, though the pacing is a bit fast for my linking. I feel that the first chapter could well have been expanded into three.

Still, keeping my eye on this one.

Interesting concept. I should read this sometime...

This sounds like it will be a Very good series. Can't wait for the next chapter. :)

oooo! this i must check out

I'm gonna check it after I finish from reading "A future worth saving". Sounds interesting!

As a response to all the ID4 comments: Yes, the cover art and the opening scene in Ponyville are inspired somewhat by ID4, but other than that there is very little this fic has in common with that. So if you're expect Ponies!ID4, I'm afraid you will be disappointed.

Darkdrium said...

I say, please continue. You have my attention.
Is there a reason why the art is so small though?

Quick! Somepony upload a computer virus into the stars' mothership! ;D

@Krizak

With Twilight Sparkle as Jeff Goldblum.

@Darkdrium

I wasn't sure how ED did their image resizing so I thought "better safe than sorry."

Nicely done. The concept is new and interesting, not like some random copy paste idea. So far it's looking good, but i suspect that it's gonna be hard as hell to roundup and conclude something as epic as this.

So I’m the only one who though that the alien looks more like Cthulhu mythos than Independence Day? At least that’s the image popping up in my head if I read (cosmic) starfish.

Anyway, the concept sounds interesting, can’t wait to learn more about those stars and their motivation.

Darkdrium said...

@Heliostorm
Well I say you should embiggen that picture for the next chapter update ;)

Interesting concept for the basis, seems like a War of the Worlds type, haha Tom Cruise as pony fan

If this ends up sucking I'll kill everyone in the world.

Light Grimdark still means possible canon character death.
Just not graphic.
I'll avoid until I know more.
Every time I read a pony death a piece of my soul is excised and burnt to ash.

*punch*

Rainbow Dash: *in her best Will Smith* Welcome to Equestria~!

Travis Smith said...

@DPV111
Most Grimdarks I've read don't have any canon character deaths at all. It's useally an OC or other that do.
I'm a big Grimdark reader and only a few really do

DPV111 said...

@Travis Smith

Hmm. Yeah I know. I was being a little melodramatic there >_>

Actually what I meant is that I want to KNOW if there is main character death before I read. Not to decide IF I read it, but just so I know in advance.

I can read "Cupcakes" level tripe, as long as I know what to expect.

But if something nasty pops up and I was not prepared... Yeah. That's happened a few times and it wasn't pretty.

@DPV111

I have no plans for a main character death at any point in the near future. If one does occur, I am 99% sure it will not come as a sudden surprise.

As someone before me mentioned it, this feels very much like some kind of cosmic-terror cthulhu-like story.

I actually love cosmic terror and i'm very impressed with your story. I hope read more of it soon.

@Heliostorm

Good to know.
I respect your integrity.

Sun Ray said...

Is this about aliens? I hope this isn't about aliens. Let the stars rule should not = let any alien race to come along rule Equestria.

Heliostorm said...

@Sun Ray

Er, what do you mean? Stars are aliens in the sense that they aren't from Equestria, so yes, this story is about aliens. But if you mean in the sense like say, ID4 or War of the Worlds, then no, they aren't those kinds of aliens.

Pretty good start!

I suggest listening to "The Sun's Gone Dim" from the trailer for Battle Los Angeles.

Fits perfectly with this story.

Elegantly epic and beautiful. Not to mention having lyrics about the stars coming down from the sky and the sky going dim ;)

cheezesauce said...

hmm... i found some bits of description a bit confusing and a few sentences seem a little... off, or unneccesary. just my opinion though.

The end of the synopsis should read "...by any mean regulatory..."

"Princess Luna, aka The Mare in The Moon, aka Nightmare Moon, we are agents of the Bureau of Celestial Affairs. In pursuant of section 42b of the "Wishes and Twists of Fate" code, we hear by notify you that your pact with the stars is still valid. Here is your official scroll of notice. You have 30 days from now to comply. An appeal may be filed no later than 10 days after this official notice. Have a nice day Ma'am."
