On the other hand this looks like it's going to be an interesting episode in itself. Possible seeing of Mac AJ and Applebloom's parents as well is always a plus :D

This episode will have a lot of AJ in it regardless I'm sure, but that airdate... Guess I'll have to be patient. We AJ fans are used to waiting after all. Couldn't hurt to wait a little longer.
I PREDICT A YOUNG GRANNY SMITH FLASHBACK.
Seriously, I need to know the deal with AJ's parents and where Apple Bloom came from. In "The Cutie Mark Chronicles" a young filly AJ leaves Granny Smith and a young Big Mac to go start a new life in Manehatten... No sign of any parents. After however long she spends there (long enough to pick up a cultured Manehatten accent) she comes back to the farm for good, again to Granny Smith and Big Mac. Still no sign of parents.
But here's the thing... Her little sister Apple Bloom hasn't been born yet. So either Apple Bloom isn't actually her sister or her parents (at least then) weren't dead... They're just not around, and nobody seems to expect them to come back any time soon, or at least AJ doesn't feel the need to wait for them to return before leaving her life on the farm behind.
So... What's the deal there?

Not that I don't like Granny Smith, but do we really need another Apple Bloom episode when Applejack is in dire need of one herself? Or Scootaloo, for that matter.
This also sounds a bit like "Sweet and Elite," but I don't expect them to play out very similarly.
Yeah seems pretty obvious that Apple Bloom will be ashamed of her granny and in the end she will tell pretty nice story and everybody in school will be excited that AB has such a wonderfull family or sth like that

I can't believe how far we are into season 2 already. Time goes by so fast when you're having ponies.
From what I can tell from the brief synopsis, its a 'bring your parent to school' day thing, and Applebloom has to bring Granny Smith instead; ergo we find out where the hell her and Scootaloo's parents are. More canon!
And don't worry guys, there is still a further 14 episodes for AJ, Pinkie, Fluttershy and Scootaloo to shine.

I wouldn't count on that. "Family Appreciation Day" is probably the name of the whole event, which means you can bring along every family member and not just your parents. Obviously Granny Smith isn't Applebloom’s first choice so I hope there’s an explanation why she didn't pick AJ or Big Mac instead.
So I think we don't get any new information regarding AJ's parents. However, I didn’t expect to see Rarity’s parents in "Sisterhoove Social" so they writers may surprise me again and we’re going to see her parents.
I think everyone is impatient to see more pinkie pie or twilight or AJ, but this season seems to be the season of character rounding, we get to see our favorites at their best and worst, twilight is still due an awesome episode since ep 3 was basically her cracking. AJ... well she cracked back in ep 4 but was solidly awesome in just about every ep thereafter... I still want to see more of pinkie's past, I mean I love Pinkamina fics but I would like a little canon to see how the dots actually connected from barn party to party cannon. oddly enough I think Pinkie is the most mysterous of the group in terms of how the fuck she got from where she was to where she is.
I feel bad for AJ.
o and Scootaloo too, she kinda needs an episode.

People are complaining a bit much in here. I understand where you're coming from (I'd like some more AJ and Fluttershy too), but there's nothing to say this episode will be bad. We'll have 14 more eps left in the season, so it's not even really the halfway point. There's plenty of time to get more of your favorites.
I just thought of something... If everypony in AB's class is bringing in a family member.... Maybwe we'll see something Of scoot's parents or other family like ponies (I'd lol if she brought rainbow in claiming she was her cousin or something 8D)
About time they used Granny for something else than cheap "old people are funny" jokes. She raised three kids, and deserves some respect. And, hey, maybe we'll finally learn what's up with AJ's parents?

Also, I guess people are kinda upset there haven't been more episodes centered around some of the other mane characters lately. But there's still many to go. I'm sure there will be some along the line. Just cool your jets and enjoy what there is.

This season is still awesome, and I'm happy that the secondary characters are getting more attention this season. Applejack is my favorite, and I'd love to see her in a centric episode, but I think I'll just be patient and be happy with watching ponies :3

I like it. Age/youth theme AND one of the ponies in focus is voiced by Tabitha St. Germain, who I am led to believe is one of their finest VAs.

@Harwick To be honest, it would not surprise me if they just didn't have time to design, make and animate two parents, it has been stated that the studio's schedules are very tight. The Apple parents lack of existance is probably more down to physical real world constraints than any in-universe reason not yet devised (or devised as of when this ep was written).
And I doubt that they planned for them not to be there, only to reveal it now with this episode (and no way are their parents dead, or anything similarly tragic), I don't think they think that far ahead (eg. Luna).
I'm expecting that they were just on some apple related journey somewhere, possibly setting up farms, similar to Appleloosa.
I'm very dissaponinted. Granny Smith just doesn't bring very much to the table, she's just a caricature of old people.
But most importantly Pinkie and Fluttershy have been sorely missed this season. It's way overdue one of them gets an episode.

THis is gonna be like the episode where you don't want your parent to tell your class about their embarrassing job,
or where you don't want your grandparents to tell your class about how your family didn't do anything cool.
BUt then it turns out your family member is actually really awesome and you learn a lesson.
This episode is either going to make or break my head-canon.
So far, Season 2 has greatly exceeded my expectations on every level, Luna's return being the biggest one (top notch work, FiM Team). While I do like the focus on characters outside of the mane 6, I can only hope that the postponing of the Fluttershy and AJ episodes means that they will absolutely blow my socks off.
Regardless, the team has my unwavering support for the rest of this season, and I trust that they'll amaze me with this episode too.

We all know Granny Smith takes in orphaned young 'uns over the years and raises them as her own grandkids, with the exception of Applebloom. You see Applejack and Big Mac actually aren't related by blood, and are in fact the parents of Applebloom. I'm hoping to see this episode tackle that issue with some heart and warmth.

Oh, I have no doubt that this is indeed the practical reason their parents don't show up in that episode. But most fans do think that Ma and Pa Apple are deceased, even if the show will never say so, and that episode and the existence of Applebloom shows that there are good reasons to doubt it.
As for where they were, at that time they would have been the only ones old and healthy enough to work the farm. They might have just been working the orchards.
Tell me, there is going to be 2 week break after the next episode, or those two episodes were simply not announced yet?

I am expecting to be wrong, but since "Secret to my Excess" dealt briefly with the idea of death (Spike and Rarity free-falling to earth, them preparing to meet their fate), there may be a chance that the Apple Parents could be dead, further explored in the upcoming episode.
Death is a reality for all families. I lost my father to lung cancer when I was 4 and learned at that young age what mortality was. Also, I am not the only one to lose a parent. Some children have lost both.
If a kids show had the maturity, the competence and the grapes to handle familial death, MLP would be our best contender. That is my honest opinion.
Apple Bloom is best pony so I have no problem with this. Plus, I love old people. I don't really want Scootaloo to have an episode because it's so much funnier when she's FOREVER ALONE.
This seems like an opportunity to develop Granny Smith as a character so that she is more than comic relief. Can't wait to see what the team will do with her.

Your comment reminds me of the episode of Sesame Street that dealt with Mr. Hooper's death. A lot of people love that ep, but a lot of parents complained about a kids show dealing with the subject.
But I'm like, "why not?" You had shows in the 80's like G.I. Joe with all this shooting and nobody dies or even gets seriously hurt. Personally I think that's more disconcerting a lesson to teach kids (that violence has no consequences, and death doesn't exist), than to accept the reality of death and as the song goes "how fragile we are", and all that.

I am in total agreement here. Parents should have a say when educating their children about mortality, but I firmly believe that FiM has what it takes to handle the discussion. Part of friendship and love is the ability to deal with these losses.
Will it be controversial? Yes. Will it provoke thought, even among the automatic and thoughtless? Absolutely.

Season 2 is 26 episodes long. That was confirmed months ago, before the first season had even finished airing.
We only get info on new episodes a few weeks before they air, and there is another two-week gap between episodes 11 and 12. As such, we are just getting info on the rest of the season now.
As for the episode itself, I'm interested to see where they go with this. I just hope they don't chicken out and not mention the parents at all.
If they are dead, then that can add a little bit of dramatic undertone to the episode.
If they aren't, then we might get more of an idea how the Apple family functions.
In any case, looking forward to another year of pony.
I like the idea of another Apple Bloom episode, in that her sheer determination to get what she wants is a great comedy trait. Look at her first cutie mark episode. Anything that good, and I'll be delighted.
I'm a little nervous about Apple Bloom in this particular episode, because it's hard to see why she'd be ashamed of Granny Smith. Really don't like the idea of wedging ponies into square holes just to make an arbitrary moral work.
As a Scootaloo episode, this could have been incredibly cool. I'll join the others in hoping we at least get a glimpse of Scoot's family here.
Really can't imagine explicitly getting into dead parents in MLP. This show doesn't need to use things that dark to get its emotional moments. That's one reason it's so special.
