I don't know about you guys, but I'm already writing some sweet, sweet AU Hearth's Warming Fic
Honestly, posting the 1080p versions of the episodes is more than satisfying enough for all of us. The rest is just icing on the proverbial cake, and that is awesome.
Thankfully, I don't tend to over-think MLP. I tend to just enjoy it for being a well made and very fun show. But, today's episode got me head-scratching.
If that was really the founding of Equestria where was Celestia and Luna? The unicorns raised the sun, and presumably the moon, which makes it sound like Celestia and Luna weren't around. But, before Celestia and Luna the world was ruled by Discord. Starswirl the Bearded was also mentioned and Luna knew Starswirl. Also, the Equestrian flag they planted had Celestia and Luna on it.
So... Huh?
Overall though, fun episode. I enjoyed it. The only thing missing was pan out to show it was Celestia (being her usual Trollestia self) outside the window at the end making the windigo noise.

Maybe it would've been better if the leaders had stayed frozen, and the underlings took over and founded Equestria. The underlings did seem to be better at leading.
They could've even had a legend that if the leaders ever thawed out, their hate would turn them into wendigos.
Here's the part where people might be making a mistake:
Assuming a entertaining holiday pageant is a 100% historically accurate depiction of events. Much like pageants for Christmas and other holidays, it's possible the information in it is wrong or altered to be more aesthetic/entertaining (for instance, the shepherds being out with their sheep late at night leads many to believe the actual birth would have had to be in the spring or summer)

The artificting was unfortunately source-level, and I couldn't get it to completely go away. It's much better than it was, though! I may rework it eventually, but that was the best I could do on a time crunch with little sleep. ;)

I've seen a number of supposed continuity errors that I'd like to address, and hopefully make sense of for others.
First off, the events of "Hearths warming Eve" predate the rule of Celestia and Luna.
The first bit of evidence is the reference to Starswirl the Bearded. Remember back on Nightmare Night, Luna was the only one who got Twilight's costume as Starswirl. "Commendable costume, even got the bells right." Remember that Luna was also banished for a thousand years, and hadn't yet adapted to the present times in Nightmare Night. This means that Starswirl was relevant as a folklore figure in Luna's time pre-banishment, and therefore places Starswirl (and his apprentice, Clever, played by Twilight) before Luna's time.
As for the flag, watch the scene carefully when the flag is unfurled. People ask "Wait, how could Hearth's Warming Eve take place before Celestia, when Celestia appears on the flag?"
The flag with Celestia on it is not displayed until the scene transitions back into present time. No doubt, the flag had changed over the years. Considering the events of the pilot episode, it would make sense that after Luna's banishment, she would've been removed from Equestria's iconography. The flag shown at the end shows both Celestia and Luna, which indicates that the flag was changed again to signify Luna's return and absolution from Nightmare Moon.
You do not see the flag they raise in the flashback. The scene goes with them putting in the flagpole, pulling on a rope, and THEN the scene transitions to the present where you see the current Equestria flag adorning the flagpole prop on the stage.
Hopefully this clears things up. Heart Warming's Eve definitely pre-dates the rule of Celestia and Luna, and probably Discord as well. So no continuity has been broken in the timing.
Plus, two other small things to consider. One: the tale of Hearth Warming's Eve is just that...a tale. It doesn't have to be consistent, it's just a story intended to express good morals and the importance of friendship; it's not supposed to be a historically accurate depiction of Equestria's founding. Two: it's just a TV show. You should really just relax.

Hearthswarming had no mentions of alicorns, Discord, or any mention of any sort of "grand ruler" (only leaders for each tribe)
Discord is the lord of Chaos, what's more chaotic than a mashup of every pony combined... Let alone such a pony that could (in theory) live for ever?
Discord is then defeated by his "creations". It's both poetic and plausible.

Epic voice acting is epic. Seriously award people, get this show some awards. Also, I'm in agreement with the people who say that this predates both Discord and the Sisterhood, implying that the Alicorn race was either reclusive or created by Discord himself. Also, the time-frame did seem to snap back to the present before the Alicorn flag was hoisted, so I don't have any problem with time-frame stuff.
Oh, and Derpy curtain-derping. Yay!

I doubt it. Looks to me based on this story, that the three tribes decided that rulers were needed who would be neutral between their various sides, so they created them as a chimera. Which would make Discord either a prototype gone rogue, an unexpected side effect, or a disastrous attempt at an even more ambitious attempt to create a ruler acceptable to dragons, griffins and all the ungulate species.
