"It Takes A Village" isn't a Spike-shipping story either, at least not eight chapters in. He's still got his crush on Rarity, but it doesn't seem to be any different than it is in the show. So far the shipping seems to be confined to a minor subplot between two supporting characters.
Plus, of course, he's no longer a baby in the story (the picture being used is unrelated, and likely chosen simply because it's a portrait of Spike.) The thrust of the story is how Spike, Ponyville and Equestria at large react to a large dragon living among ponies once he outgrows the library.
Can someone tell me, in a bit more depth, what It Takes A Village is about?

It Takes a Village is well worth checking out for anyone looking for something to read. It's well written, sweet, has some good conflicts to keep the plot moving and features the entire cast of the show, from Applebloom through Zecora.
