Pony Expressions Sheet

Source
Just in case any of you artists out there needed a quick reference guide for pony expressions, I think Scootaloo here does a good job of giving some variety out.  If you really want to improve, try swapping her with another character and doing it yourself!

Hmm. Surprisingly helpful. Thanks, artist & Seth for showing this to us.

Oooh, very cool. This could be very helpful to many many artists. Plus its just fun to look at all the expressions. The drunk and silly ones make me smile. Thanks for this. <3

A lot of them could be better, honestly.

Bombedrumbum said...

Wait, wait.........Drunk?!?! Wh-wh-why does Scootaloo have a drunk face?!

Glover said...

The "Silly" and "Despondent/Pouty" ones are hilarious.

At first I was like "DRUNK Scootaloo?" and then I realized this was Adult Scootaloo... *facepalm*

XD oh the 25 expression meme thing ^_^

this thing has been around for a very very long time actually you can google it in deviant there are a lot of these expression done by random deviants

they usually do it for practice

Fun fact: Adult Scootaloo is badass.

Bombedrumbum said...

I know that it's an adult Scootaloo, but still, Scootaloo is Scootaloo

Ryex said...

*is staring at the "flirty" expression*

Chucklesmoke Spray said...

Scootaloo is best pony. By far.

Onipolice said...

I know it sounds picky, but that's not Scootaloo persay. That's a Rainbow Dash recolor.

Dublio said...

This looks like the Scootaloo that went on to joined the Wonderbolts just like Dash and gained an admirer just like herself. It was a comic. There was also a comic from the same artist where she visited the old tree house and met adult Applebloom and adult Sweetie Belle. Wouldn't be surprised if this was from the same artist too.

But I already think Scootaloo is awesome. Adult Scootaloo makes that doubly so.

Erik said...

The year says it was made in 2007.

This is strange Bl

Aerora said...

@Erik

That would be when the template was made.

SgtGarand said...

I liked the flirty to be honest.
Whether she's actually being flirty, or just that she knows she is awesome.

I usually just reference the expression(s) I want to use from the actual episodes.

EonMaster said...

So this is Adult Scootaloo? That explains the hair and 'drunk' expression.

MasterLuigi452 said...

Oh I remember trying out this.
It is really hard to do an emotion. Trust me.
To save the day, here is the template of expression challenge.

@Dublio/jodyjm13

Here's one of those comics. Just a few clicks away from the other...

Dublio said...

I would like to see an expressions sheet for Tom the Boulder.

Dublio said...

I remembered that comic because it was so touching + Adult Scootaloo is very awesome. I'd never forget that hairstyle.

This may indeed help out with my animation. Thanks for the great reference!

Don_ko said...

she's already swapped version of Dash, but still nice

Wento said...

I'm gonna go right ahead and crop these out, shrink 'em down to 40x40 pixels and see if i can't replace my skype smileys with these ^^

They could also serve as mood icons on LiveJournal and other journal platforms using forks from the same software.

Hollow/Blank creeps me out. What happened to her? Did she just finish reading "Cupcakes"? Or see a Wonderbolt (not Rainbow Dash, probably not Spitfire or Soarin') crash and burn? Or Rainbow Dash bonked her head and now is obsessed with "dressing in style"? (That would probably fit under "Incredulous" "WTF?" or "Fear")

karrotline said...

can we get this on a shirt

Chaoyll said...

Looks more like a Rainbow Dash recolour than Scootaloo.

jmanjr35 said...

I'm 99% sure this is just Rainbow Dash recolored Scootaloo's color scheme.

DragonInside said...

This will look better on my fridge with a tiny sliding frame and you choose "How I Feel Today..."

Renfield said...

No, this is the Adult Scootaloo. Two telltale signs.

1. Look at the bang that sticks out the most from the front. It's curved up. Rainbow's outmost bang goes straight down.

2. Scoot's mane goes down both sides of her neck. Rainbow's mane just goes down the side that is always shown from the front. I guess just because it's a bit spiked, they look the same.

But still this is awesome. I hope the mane six or other foremost BG ponies get the same treatment.

Drunk adult Scootaloo is best chicken.

Chaoyll said...

@Renfield

What on earth is a 'bang'? You mean her fringe? Is that some kind of American word? ._.

RinellaWasHere said...

@Chaoyll

Bangs are the hair that falls down in front of your forehead. I don't know if it's an Americanism or not.

PennandPaper said...

Incredulous and the Pouty/Despondent one aren't hitting me quite right. Incredulous feels more like, "What have I just walked in on? How do I walk back out? Gah." and Pouty/Despondent... is... neither. Neither and or nor both.

If that makes sense. It's not... either. And it's not both, to put my two cents in the penny jar...

... /off to obvious deviant art meme to say soooo

The rest seem rather Scootaloo~ Though, sarcastic might need to be caught 'mid-eyerolling' or something rather than, 'eyes looking upward in annoyance'. then again, this is adult-scoots.... soooo-hnn.

@ Chaoyll + Rinella
bangs are pretty american.

fringe is... british, yes?

we use fringe as a... RADICAL term I think. =3 "Dude, that fringe, is wickedddd-"

...

okay.

mhnkay, if no one else, I might have used it as a Radical Term~
scootaloo might have. /hah

Chaoyll said...

Haha, I dunno the word bangs, sounds weird to me. And well in that case 'fringe' and 'bangs' are the same thing.

Expression sheets genericize drawings. They give characters cookie-cutter emotions and ruin real acting and expression.

Kinda helpful for me
Scootadrunk lulz

Onipolice said...

@youarewrongjosh
I would suggest instead that expression sheets, when used properly, help maintain a character's uniqueness. If a freeform approach is used an artist is more likely to repeat expressions across multiple characters.

cpbrony said...

Great! I love this! PS is "derped" missing or is Derpy th only one allowed to Derp?

Epesi said...

@youarewrongjosh

No. No, no, no! You're doing it wrong. Expression sheets don't genericize drawings; bad drawing habits genericize drawings.

The point of an expression sheet isn't to say "these are the expressions this character can be drawn with; copy them as-is to convey moods." It's to establish a well-rounded, consistent starting point for a character's performances. It's important to have solid groundwork before you go off warping your character's face in crazy ways; there have to be rules before you can break them.

Keep in mind that the expression sheet was intended as an exercise, not a shortcut. Someone linked the original template, but here it is again with the artist's comments intact, for better context: http://fav.me/dx21vv

tl;dr: Despite what John Kricfalusi might try to tell you, consistency is a good thing.

Epesi said...

A further note on expression sheets and acting: FiM itself makes very heavy use of "cookie-cutter" character templates and expressions, and yet most of us here would agree that the animated acting on this show is superb. It's one of the most frequently and highly praised aspects of the show, one even many a hater has begrudgingly conceded.

Formulas aren't bad.

I'll shut up now.

Been following this meme on DA for quite some months now. Shocking how long it took for someone to make a pony version of it. Oh well!
