Friendship is Magic DVD Pre-Orders on Amazon

It looks like Amazon is taking pre-orders on a Friendship is Magic DVD, with a release date of February 28th.  From the run time of 110 minutes, we can probably assume it has 4-5 episodes packed in.

Unfortunately not a whole lot of information is available right now.   The studio creating the discs (Shout factory)  has had rumors of its production floating around for a while now.   I guess this is the confirmation of those.

At 10 bucks, its much cheaper than the Target disc with three episodes each.

I'll keep on updating as more information about it floods in.  Hopefully we will see a full pack in the future!

(Blu-ray please Hasbro!)

Cool! Totally gonna support more FiM seasons.

4 or 5 episodes isn't that much. It better have some extra goodies!

Yeah I will try to wait a bit more till they release the whole season. Hopefully as a Blu-Ray.

4-5 episodes? Oh come on.

i hope to see a complete season one collection soon

TheDisturbedOne said...

That wasn't cool Seth, I thought by Friendship is Magic DVDs, you meant the entire 1st Season in one box set. It's still cool, but I would rather have them all in one box set. Oh well, maybe some other day.

KouThan said...

I want blu-ray. DVD looks so bad on a full HD TV.

Crunch said...

I refuse to buy episodes piecemeal. When they release all of season 1 on dvd or blu-ray, I'll pick one up.

Luke said...

If you want Blu-Rays let Shout Factory know. They are outstanding at doing everything they can to make fans happy.

BadMunky said...

Okay bronies, time to show Hasbro the power of out fandom in a way they can understand. pre-order the *yay* out of those dvd's....if that's okay with you...

Full season or get out.

I would kill for director/cast commentary.

Imaginging Tara Strong and Jayson Thiessen would be two good candidates.

we need full season release NOW.

Star Wars The Clone Wars gets them, WHY DON'T WE?

Killsteal_Wolf said...

Misses my birthday, and I'd rather see Blu-Rays get released as well. Knowing if there are special features might sweeten the deal too. And hopefully a good box art.

Octavia said...

Inb4 and inafter everyone complaining about a full Blu-ray boxset. lol

Meh, I'll just stay with my blu-ray videos.

@Kein: Thanks for that insightful post.

TheDisturbedOne said...

@Flutterfan
As would I. I love commentaries, by both the cast and the crew, defiantly a cast and crew as awesome as the MLP:FiM crew. Only sad thing is that Lauren Faust wouldn't be a part of them, and that would make it complete.

Jelfes said...

@Octavia Heh, good timing, though I'm complacent with the pony archive ones.

Vanishing said...

4-5 episodes? That's a bitch move Hasbro.

Xkhaoz said...

I was about to switch to Amazon in 2 seconds, but I saw it was only 5 episodes. I'll wait for the Blu-ray season 1 set before I start throwing people into walls.

Vermillion Twilight said...

I'm okay with them releasing a few episodes at a time. This is standard for anime releases, and will also encourage revenue by catering to MLP's mainstream viewers (little girls, duh). I doubt mom or dad would being willing to plunk down the cash for a full box set, but would be okay picking up a $10 kids DVD.

Do I want a box set Blu-Ray release with hours of behind the scenes material, extra animated shorts, deleted scenes, rerecorded audio (Twilight's early VA still getting the feel of the character at the beginning of Bridle Gossip comes to mind), remastered audio, fixed animation errors, and and included official soundtrack? Hell yeah.

But I'm going to be patient.

since I already bought the episodes off iTunes, it matters what extras this comes with.

Retl said...

I gave my word to public that I would buy DVDs if they made them. So I will buy the DVDs. Hopefully, it won't come back to bite my tail like the whole pledge to get Monster Hunter Tri. That wasn't a bad game, but it definitely wasn't for me. And if there were balloons in that game, I don't remember them.

If a BluRay does happen, I may rebuy it. We'll see.

cardshark78 said...

Welp, 2 episodes from Adventures in Canterlot plus the projected 5 from Season 1 makes 7. OK, it's better than just 2 eps with the previous release. Better pre order mine before they sell out fast. With the amount of fandom this show is getting, i'll guarentee that this release will sell out 6 seconds after the release.

pmcollectorboy said...

Hmm. I'm okay with this. As long as it's in chronological order. >.> Yeah. Chronology. *snickers*

Salamander said...

4-5 episodes per disc is pretty much standard fare for just about every anime/cartoon I have seen.
We don't even know how much extras are going to be on it.
A lot of you are just being really silly.

Salamander said...

@EVIL
Wow, real mature.
I'm not even going to look at that link if thats how you behave.

ssj4raditz said...

Totally pre-ordered.
I would prefer Blu-Ray and a season set, but hopefully this will sell well enough that they realize we want MORE!

PixelFairy said...

I never buy the individual dvds as space on my dvd shelf is precious, so I am really waiting for the box set.

I do want to support the show so I guess I should pre-order (can always send it back when the time comes).

AndyM said...

If any of you have never subscribed to the Hub or supported MLP in any other way (official merch, shirts from WeLoveFine, or buying the episodes from iTunes), you owe it to the community to buy this. Put your money where your mouth is. If Hasbro or Shout Factory sees these DVDs selling like cold, moldy cakes, a complete Blu-Ray release is out of the question. Do your part and pre-order. If they do sell well (and they only will with YOUR help), we may very well see a complete set.

Jonny Manz said...

Normally, I hate buying DVDs, and prefer iTunes/Digital Distribution. I think I'll buy these, however.

DashAttack said...

Saving my money for the box set.

As awesome as this is, I want it all at once. =/

HappyCrusader said...

Still holding out for that complete box set

HeroInferno said...

I'll be honest here and say I would buy these in a heartbeat just so I could watch ponies on my tv rather than my laptop (which has gotten a pretty dirty screen and it bugs me) plus I'm happy to support this show for any price.

Jonny Manz said...

@AndyM
Haha, unfortunately, my parents control our TV package, and the package with the HUB, they feel, is too expensive (especially since I'd probably be watching only one show). But I did buy a shirt off of WeLoveFine, and am hoping to get more (as gifts) from my family for Christmas, so there's that. I would've bought the episodes off of iTunes, except my computer doesn't have the hard drive space required for all... however many of the episodes they have up. As for official merch, if they make a pony mug, you can bet I'll buy it. Otherwise, I don't really spend money on those sorts of things.

Sheffield Makoto said...

As I'm happy about the news, I refuse to buy out of personal choice for Blu-ray.

mattwhite924 said...

Shout Factory has done a fantastic job with all the Transformers DVDs, so I know that we can trust them with this. Their DVDs are usually aimed at adult collectors, so that makes me happy too.

Skylark Torch said...

This is very tempting, but I would really want a blu-ray boxed set...
It would be a big thing. With bonuses and extras...
I would buy it...

Floof Cat said...

I still don't own a Blu-Ray player. Maybe I'll add one to my PC rig one day in the future, but I don't watch enough films to make it worth my trouble. Regular DVD for MLP will do just fine for me...

MintBerryCrunch said...

@EVIL

You mean pirate the episodes that are all already uploaded to YouTube in 1080p?

Yeah, you're hardcore.

milleniummaster18 said...

I'm holding out until the complete first season DVDs. That is, if I ever buy one.

Retl said...

On second thought, I think I'll wait for confirmation from Hasbro before putting money down on this.

K. Chan said...

You should include a link for the lazy people, Seth.

Also, while I'm hoping for a box set, I'm going to preorder this anyways to show them my support and to tell Hasbro "Yes, there is a market for this.".

Mason said...

I second that motion about Blurays.

I don't mind DVDs if the show actually was made in 480p.
If the show is made in HD (such is the case with FiM), then I'd prefer a Bluray.

Armando said...

Not sure what's the point of selling us 480p DVDs when we have 720p rips for free. We're on the verge of 2012, they need to get with the times. When Hasbro comes out with 1080p Blu-Rays, they'll have all of my money.

Sheffield Makoto said...

@Armando

Understand though that the DVD's are incredibly cheap, which helps parents to buy them for their kids, also is a perfect incentive to help bring profits to the company. More profits should mean more merchandise to include Blu ray.

IndomiPhoenix said...

This is awesome news! Shout has always been real good about releasing cult classic cartoons and I'm sure that they'll release a box set.

Overheat said...

I think supporting the show is important, but as the owner of two shirts from welovefine, I am going to wait until we can get entire season 1, even if it is on regular DVD.

Beezy said...

Hasbro will get my money if it's a full season blu-ray with tons of special features. :D

KouThan said...

I just pre-ordered just to show that there is interest, (lets be clear I think that they know that any preorders at that time are from bronies) and I hope that they will get the message that we want a full season blu-ray set. Maybe by the time they decide it it will include season 2.

ChaosDX1 said...

Nice, but I'm saving for the soundtrack they said they would release.

Nameless said...

Need more details before making a decision on this...

King9 said...

I'll probably buy this just to show support, but I'd really prefer a full season. I mean, I'm not going to buy all 5 DVDs that would comprise season 1 that's just impractical.

mattwhite924 said...

Remember people, the bit-rate on these DVDs is about the same (if not higher) then the bit-rate on those 1080p rips on YouTube. So even though it has a lower resolution it should have a pretty good picture. Heck, in fast moving scenes it should have a better picture with less macroblocking.

mechaluigi7 said...

You know AndyM on the comments makes a good point. If we dont buy the 3 episode set dvds, that will possibly kill our chances for a full set. It sounds silly in the long run to have to two sets of the season at the end, but it shows Hasbro that bronies care and want to support em.

I've gotta agree that I'm reluctant to buy anything other than a full season 1 compilation. At least there's finally some motion on the dvd front though . . .

Ish said...

Well, I'd rather it was all of S1 on blu-ray, but I'll keep an eye on this.

Samuel said...

Hasbro? Y U NO Release season set on one blu-ray disc instead?

DcmRulz said...

Here's what I think Hasbro should do...

--Once all the foreign language episodes of S1 are aired, prepare to release a Blu-Ray set of the whole of season 1 (with the option of different languages)

--Add a couple of features, like parent-friendly stuff, kiddy games, commentary for however many episodes you can get commentary for and what not.

--perhaps a few deleted scene storyboards and karaoke for the songs would be nice too.

Jordan said...

I'm one of the ones saving my money for a 2-disc DVD/Blu-ray release with ALL of season 1 on it, plus bonus features.

Hawkeye92 said...

So much dvd hate. I don't have a blu ray player and I'll wager a lot of people don't. Dvds look fine on my big tvs and I'm not going to pay hand over fist for a relitively minor jump in quality.
I'll wait for a season one boxed set too methinks.

InfinityDash said...

Hmm... gonna have to wait and see exactly what's on this. I've been desperately wanting to give Hasbro my money for a Season 1 complete box set (Preferably Blu Ray but DVD would be fine), so if this is just another few episodes on DVD, I'll have to pass. But Shout Factory releases complete season sets for other shows, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Morgadeth said...

Hasbro, this is how you will release My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Full seasons on blu-ray, with commentaries, and maybe an OST.

Ewyndall said...

Patience bronies, patience.
We are an unexpected market and the global situation doesn't allow Hasbro to just hastly start mass producing products for an 'uncertain' group.

First, they give us shoutouts. Then there was the Comic-Con poster. They try to do something by placing background ponies in the blindbags. Now a small DVD thingy.

We are getting there. Just be a little bit more patient ^-^

As for the DVD/Blue-Ray thing. Yes, I would prefer Blueray. But I'm fine with a DVD set aswell, I don't hate DVDs as much as some others here seem to.
But I agree with the majority: I'm waiting for a full season 1 release , be it DVD or Blueray.

Talzie said...

Cool, but I'm going to wait until they release whole seasons on BluRay (if they do)...

graywolf688 said...

Where does it say it's only 5 episodes? I thought Shout only put out sets?
I have their 1st season sets of Heathcliff and Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, and both have extras so i'd say there's a good chance it'll have some. If it is only 5 eps, I might wait since I have every episode on my Dish Network DVR.
DVD is fine by me. Don't have a BluRay player and i'm not planning on getting one.

StrangeNoise said...

Not available in my region of course, which I'm actually relieved about I think, as it saves me from the dilemma of wanting to support the show but not wanting a half-arsed DVD priced like it's 1999.

Nathaniel said...

There will be no pirating of this show if you know what's good for us. Supporting a project is the only way to keep it going. Plus, I hadn't heard of the soundtrack coming soon, can't wait for that.

Anthony said...

I get the feeling they'll release 5 DVD's with 5 episodes each, and episode 26 with extras. Sometime later, they'll release an entire box set of the first season. Then they'll probably release another box set, this time with Blu-ray, bonus features, pack-ins or collectibles.

This is a really unfortunate case of just how Hasbro operates. They've been churning out merchandise at high prices to kids for so long that they'll continue to do so even when their customers are now adults buying it for themselves. It's easy for us to see how pricey their merch is and become skeptical about buying it, but kids don't care about how much something costs; they just want what they like.

It really feels like Hasbro values profit over quality and satisfaction.

vash989 said...

Meh, I bought both seasons on iTunes. Plug the computer into the big screen tv and BAM! Ponies for everybody!

Retl said...

I'll admit, it's a little depressing how many of these comments are attempts to justify piracy or assumptions that this stuff isn't intended kids.

In the latter case, I could see how feelings like that might come up from frequently dealing with other adults who enjoy MLPFiM as well. Perspectives tend to skew like that over time, when a lot of people who only know that their family members or friends like it generally aren't going to be very vocal about that. That doesn't imply that those people aren't contributing towards FiM with their wallets.

I'm not even going to consider the cause for the former.

But there's a lot of positive energy here as well from people who want it, so that's great. <3

I hate to quote myself but, here's what I said in July.

"Ahem, may I remind every brony that Hasbro will comply to a full season DVD set if the two-episode per discs actually sell?

This isn't Hasbro being an a-hole, this is business! Don't let this show have the same fate as the rest of season 2 of Gargoyles. Want to know what happened? Because fans thought refusing to buy Season 2 Part One would be a good idea just to see if Disney would comply to release the rest.

And boy was every fan screwed. The DVD sales weren't high, it remains unreleased all because the fans actually played stupid.

To all bronies, buy the discs to get your wish."

That still applies here. This is just Shout! and Hasbro testing the DVD to see if it can sell. Please people, you want a season set; buy the compliation DVD.

BrompanoBeach said...

+1 preorder. I bought the 2-episode disc at Target too, for $8 (which works out to 18¢/minute). It's a rip-off, but if it gets us all closer to a full-season set....

Chizakura said...

I would LIKE to "refuse to buy until full season" but unfortunately, if we all do that, there won't BE a full season set. So I'm pre-ordering it to encourage more DVD releases.

Chizakura said...

By the way, if all the 'refuse to buy'ers causes there to be no more DVD releases, I'll kill you all in your sleep. Just so we understand eachother. <3
