Comic: Ode to Friendship / Lots of Pies

Source: Andy P
I guess it's sort of a comic? Regardless, it's pretty cool, and the art is good, so comic it is! Apparently this poem actually works with "This is your singing telegram's" tune if you want to sing it.

And a newspaper "funnies section" level bad pun below.  Enjoy it!

Interesting...anyone want to try singing the first one to the 9th?

Jelfes said...

She can also change cutie mark colors at will.

'bout that second one...

If apples from Ponyville, leaves from Deerville, and carrots from Rabbitville, shouldn't the Cowville one be made of grass?

how i do like a good farm joke

Oh dear..

Nice comics.

@WizardShy

it is grass... just digested

Holy crap that poem was amazing

@T-God

It's working just fine, it just no longer shows the number growing higher as you sit on one page. Simply click on another link, or hit refresh, and the counter changes to to the current total.

Just clarifying: Urine is taboo, but not feces?

Pinstar said...

This is why pinkie dressed up as a chicken and not a cow. Otherwise she'd be cow pie.

#1 I really really like that poem. So nice. Oh poetry. Plus, booing Luna down there. <3

#2 Doh ho ho! Dat horrible pun, jeez. :P

@Laurence Brown
but why isn't working normally? how am i gonna see the counter hit the 70 million =(

KTS said...

1. Pinkie Pie is everywhere.

2. Cow Pie. Get it know.

Flub said...

Uh.... the page counter isn't working. WE NO LONGER KNOW THE FREQUENCY OF PONY!! THE HORROR!

Scribejay said...

Well yeah but the poem in #1 also works to the Gilligan's Island theme. There's a specific reason why they and a number of other poems and tunes work interchangeably but I can't for the life of me remember it.

@Masquerade
Well, there was that "Do you pee in the shower?" comic a month or two ago...

#1 is nicely done, and with Pinkie Pie being in multiple places, I think you could take that to mean the passage of time and call it a comic, just without panel borders. The little scene with Luna disappointed me, though; in a joking context I could accept it, but this poem should be played more or less straight, and having Luna 'boo' her sister (on TV no less!) doesn't really fit.

#2 needs a rimshot.

@Discord
You raise an excellent point, good sir.

The art's very nice on that first one, but what I'm really impressed by is the poem--or rather, the style of the poem and the references that it makes. Helicon? Bonhomie and requite, both pronounced (as indicated by the rhymes that they're paired with) correctly? That odd and lovely construction "do foe and foe their wrongs repent?"

..."Andy P," two questions. Where did you manage to get a classical education in this day and age, and where can I get one!?

Ronan said...

...I mean, maybe it's just a repurposing of a poem that I'm not familiar with--my knowledge is admittedly pretty limited--but a google search for a few of the un-ponified stanzas didn't turn up anything. Either it's really obscure or simply not on the internet, or someone from the 21st century wrote a poem that reads like it came right out of the 19th, in which case I am mostmuch impressed.

@Scribejay
You can even sing 'Amazing Grace' to the tune of the Gilligan's Island theme. It works scarily well; just don't do it around people who lack a sense of humor...

Snapai said...

Have to admit, I read #1 to the tune of "Singing Telegram".

Wierdplatformer said...

1. Impressive and sweet.

2. Ahhh, that pun is painful!

Qazarar said...

That first one is just, wow. That is some fantastic poetry there.

Oddly enough, #1 also goes well with the 'verse' sections of "O! Susanna!"

ultraspacemobile said...

hello everyone, The first comic is mine. for those that were wondering, the meter is called "common meter" and works well with many tunes. it is used profusely in hymns and such. I noted its compatibility with "singing telegram" merely to reenforce the conceit that pinkie pie composed it.

I now agree with the criticism that the luna bit does not fit with the rest. I originally made it in two pages (the luna bit was the joke at the end), only combining them at the last minute.

But what's done is done.

2. I should have seen that pun coming a mile away.

SgtGarand said...

#1 was awesome. Although, felt somewhat like reading Dante's Inferno. And when trying to fully understand the meaning, reading it to the rhyme of Pinkie's telegram song doesn't help.

#2 lol, funny pun. I just wonder WHY Twilight would have that one to begin with?

jodyjm13 said...

@ultraspacemobile
It's still a terrific poem and a fun drawing; thanks for sharing it with us! I agree with Ronan that you did an excellent job of evoking classical poetry, which makes it that much better.

Larmyth said...

I'm having trouble finding the original post for #1, meaning I can't find the image through a google search. I figured it was DeviantArt like most of these but still, I'm terrible when it comes to tracking things like this down. Even with all the info given.

Scribejay said...

@ultraspacemobile
That was it, I was gonna say they're all in ballad meter but your poem uses the common meter rhyme scheme while Pinkie Pie's singing telegram is the ballad rhyme scheme.

Great poem by the way.

Scribejay said...

@Scribejay No wait the poem is a ballad. Damn I'm off my a-game tonight.

ultraspacemobile said...

@Scribejay

Oh, in fact you were right and I was wrong--according to wikipedia, "common meter" necessarily uses abab, whereas ballad meter is simply abxb. Apparently i need to review my textbook.

In response to Larmyth, I've been meaning to make a deviantart account, but so far (since i read "Illustrator cs4 for dummies" a couple of months ago), I've only made this comic and the one i posted on EQD on sept. 25. I've just been mailing them to the 'submit" address. Sorry for the confusion.

Destroyka777 said...

@O. Hinds Actually, I tried singing it (though not to the ninth) and... It is fun! I tried singing it in the fashion of... I'm not too sure what to call it, but Irish bard comes to mind. I'm thinking of recording it and posting on youtube.

The Ode To Friendship is exquisite. Just brilliant, and such a wonderful poster as well. Reminds me of a page from a very, very old poetry book.

Utterly magnificent.

olivebeans said...

Ode to Friendship also works with Winter Wrap-Up, oddly enough.
