Singapore Report on Bronies

Straits Times in Singapore recently released this article all about the pony phenomenon.  It's pretty in depth compared to some of the other we have seen in the past, though I think the "hugging plushies to fall asleep" may have been a bit overboard. Careful guys!  You can find the print version above, and the web version (that is pretty limited) here!

Thanks to Wayne for the images.

Too much many things to recover from my lost favourites that is.

The ponies will take over the world, 1 by 1 becomes a brony, slow and steady.

Laurence Brown said...

I do not hug a plushie to fall asleep! (Because all the good fan made ones cost too much! Curses!!)

Tylendal said...

@Laurence Brown
I know. If I had cash to spare, I'd totally be bidding on the Vinyl Scratch plushie on E-Bay.

What I notice about so many of these articles, is that they often fail to ever mention that MLP is simply a "well written show". Simply saying that would give it a bit more legitimacy.

One by one turns into a brony; I can't believe this! But I got to! Worldwide Brony FTW

Straights Times?? Wut

We did tell her that. Chosen to omit? I dunno.

I think the correct one is "Straits Times". Dunno about SG.

PonyPonyPonyBrony said...

I dunno man, if I had a plushie I'd hug it to sleep every night maybe I guess.

Good to see ponies spreading out into more international media though. It's a good show, and the message of kindness and friendship can only make the world a better place.

glorioux said...

yup, straits time that is

aJonathan said...

Just admit it isn't that bad and the article might have some legitimacy. Admit it, go on! It's well written!

Hug a plushie going to sleep? I bloody wish! Do you have ANY idea how expensive the amazingly good, hoove made fan ones are? Far too much is the answer

eX.A.K.R. said...

Seth, I have emailed you (using the submit address) my own better scans of it. Perhaps you could like to upload those?

Meep said...

Oh I can't wait to rub this in to one of my pals who is also doing his service in Singapore >:3

I told him ponies would assume control of their army sooner or later and I was right! MWUAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Fadhil Anshar said...

In conclusion, Indonesian bronies are required to travel about 900 KM to another country to meet their one-of-a-kinds.

Octavia said...

I dunno. I hug a plushie to sleep every night too. lol I like having one to sleep with. :) I think the article was decent.

Derptastic_w00t said...

Can't complain about the article, its always good to read a story in the media about MLP fans that doesn't focus on the 1% of very odd fans and their habits. Never ceases to amaze me how worlwide the fandom is though, can't wait for it to grow bigger here in NZ :) Let the movement roll on!

Telofy said...

I’ve hugged dictionaries to fall asleep.

tobewriterpony said...

Woot so close to home on this one XD

Banshee said...

I'm SG and I'm a brony!!!

Sapare said...

I think the article was fine.. but I thought bronies came from b boards, not actully from bro.(That it was common misunderstanding that bronies came from bro and ponies) But hey, I might be totally wrong here.. and that bronies wass general term, not just for male fans but also female fans older then target audiance.(Even if Pegasister is becoming more common, Brony is still a general term)

@eX.A.K.R.

Mind sending it again? I cleared them all out, there were a bunch hah :x

lonelyginger said...

does anypony know the date of the newspaper? i know its probably the one for today, but i want to ty to find it, and am wondering if i should still try

dlly said...

I take offense! I hugged plushies to fall asleep even before I became a brony!

AK said...

Glad to see you've given this an article of its own instead of putting it into the Nightly Roundup, Seth. But I'm pretty sure there are better, cleaner scans that have been submitted, you might want to use those instead of these camera snapshots. There's some more content at the bottom of the page which mentions our Singapore Bronies Society Facebook group page as well as Equestria Daily too, which isn't shown here but I'm sure have been scanned and sent over to you guys.

I can't really say I'm fully satisfied with the quality and content of this article as it contains numerous potential misconceptions about the show and our community in general, firstly being the implication that 'brony' is a strictly masculine term and therefore our society is limited to guys only, which is completely untrue.

Living at Singapore finally gave me an advantage - I have a copy of this right now!

I managed to get 2 people into my school into the brony herd. The third, became a brony without me knowing, and I became a brony without him knowing. xD

One by one, I shall assimilate my whole school of 1,400 into the brony herd. I only have 1,396 to go. We'll do it one by one. :D

minty said...

Hey im from SG too, i dont usually read that section but when i heard about it through a friend i read through the whole thing. haha
Surprised to find it up here too!

T3echUL3ss0n said...

Great to know I'm not alone :D

Fireguy789 said...

Im still a closet-brony, I dont think there are any bronies for miles around here in Italy, and I dont think any of my class-mates would be to excepting if they learned I liked MLP.

Im just glad that the fandom has attracted this much attention, im also glad that this article doesn't mindlessly bash us as some others have in the past.

AK said...

Glad to see that articles such as these are drawing more attention to our Singapore Bronies Society and sending out signals to more lost ponies out there in Singapore. I welcome you all to join the gathering here --> http://www.facebook.com/groups/197681263629702/

Topsy Kretts said...

crap, if only these 234 bronies were 600 miles closer!

anywhay, where is the nightly roundup?

minty said...

@T3echUL3ss0n
yea ikr? i assumed there were only a handful of fans over here (:

Yours sincerely said...

These are the guys who wrote Elements of Gaming. O_O The respect has been doubled.

We are not alone. Everyday is a greater step to showing everypony why MLP is so great.

Well, looks like I'll have to hop over the Causeway if I want to be in a brony meetup.

80PercentBrony said...

I liked the article.
I'm glad they used National Servicemen for commentary. Military types tend to garner respect with greater ease than, say, "geeks," or "dweebs" (lol, Gilda). Not that there's anything inherently wrong with being a "geek" or "dweeb," mind you...

Proof of people respecting the military? Observe the majority of comments where a military brony takes a pic of him/herself.

80PercentBrony said...

@80PercentBrony
Forgot to add:
I can see a few misconceptions coming out of the article, though. One of the first things I noticed was that the article implies Bronies are strictly male. This simply is not true.

minty said...

actually since serving in the military is compulsory here, there would be "geeks" in the army as well.

keith said...

My Singaporean pride has doubled XD

Here's a MUCH clearer scan of the article that I must share! http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2061606/The%20Straits%20Times-SBS%20Interview.jpg

Zalius said...

Article's...Okay. Not as bad as that Strange Addiction episode that might have happened/will happen.

AK said...

@80PercentBrony
Exactly bro, I mentioned about those misconceptions in an earlier post. One major detail I would like to mention about the conducting of the actual interview itself was out of the 20-odd group who met up last Wednesday and was present at the actual interview with the reporter, none of us were girls. That must've made quite an impression on her. It seemed as though the basis of the article was the fact that guys are showing an appreciation for a girly show.

Also, as a national serviceman myself I notice and relish the trend of military-type bronies making a much better impression to general society because the work we do is supposedly 'manly', but then again National Service is compulsory in our country, so that effect will be marginalized against local readers of the Straits Times.

So you're telling me that I've been in Singapore with a US Navy ship for 2 weeks, and I could have gotten some brohoofs if I'd worn my Brony shirt out in public? And I only see this news after I can't go get a physical copy? Just great. At least I got some ponies from the Toys R Us at Suntec.

Dachimotsu said...

I WISH I had a plushie to hug as I fell asleep... :(
Gonna get one as soon as I have the money...

PinkieIsMahWaifu said...

I take offense to this as not one single pegasister was mentioned. Not all bronies are guys!

mewtwohavoka said...

@PinkieIsMahWaifu

I agree, I wish they had mentioned that there are older girls/women who watch it too.

David Reinold said...

This article is best pony.

No seriously, I don't think any journalist to date has told it as well and as honestly as this article here.

Hrwking said...

Where did they order them from I can't find anywhere to order an RD plush from and the ones on ebay go insanely high I could maybe pay like 100 but yeah college student don't have 700 plus to blow on a plush :(

Pegasisters is such a stupid word. Why can't people realize that Brony is a unisex term?
