• Poll Results: Favorite Season Two Episode So Far?

Luna goggles... That's the only excuse for this.  Lesson Zero was amaaazing!

So far every single one of these episodes has been epic.  Sibsy/Jayson/Lauren/Flashinthepan didn't lie when they said it would blow us away.

What kind of poll do you guys want to see next?  Drop it in the comments. (Not my email box! :p)

    208 comments:

    1. Lesson Zero won it for me cause of Crazy Twi and implied Pedo Twi.

    2. I second Luna goggles. Luna Eclipsed was kinda meh.

    3. Who is the coolest Person on this blog (Seth, Cereal, or Phoe)

      ReplyDelete
    4. Yes, so far all 4 episodes have been pretty dang good. I had to vote for my Princess of the night though, still so excited to have her return to the show and I surely hope it isn't the last this season!

      ReplyDelete
    5. Twilight is best pony, so her crazy episode won it for me.

      ReplyDelete
    6. Maybe a good poll would be somethin like "If you could swap bodies with a pony for one day, whose body would you swap with?" or something along those lines

      ReplyDelete
    7. I loved Discord. Best villain EVER!

      ReplyDelete
    8. Favorite reference poll! (Chocolate Rain, Fallout: Equestria, ect.)

      ReplyDelete
    9. Poor Sibsy... we've heard multiple times that her name is Sabrina Alberghetti, but nooooo, she's a username while Jayson is neither an apple nor a potato cyclops.

      ReplyDelete
    10. A good question would be "Would you consider getting a tattoo of your favorite pony?"
I'd like to see those results. Let's get some pony tattoo roundup posts going!

      ReplyDelete
    11. Awwww, no love for Discord?

      ReplyDelete
    12. I would like to see this poll:
By how much has the fun been increased?

Alright, fine! :P Try this one:
Which pony are you hoping to get their own episode next? (ie we just had a Luna episode and next we get a Rarity episode)

      ReplyDelete
    13. I voted Lesson Zero, though Return of Harmony part 2 came close.

Luna Eclipsed was the weakest one this season so far imo >_>

      ReplyDelete
    14. Luna Eclipsed is only considered good because it had luna in it.

Overall It felt like it was the weakest one this season (still good episode, but not as good as the others)

      ReplyDelete
    15. "Who is your favorite blog pony?"

      ReplyDelete
    16. Favorite completed fanfiction?

Theres a few good choices there...

      ReplyDelete
    17. I would like to so an opinion of who had the Best costume in Ep4 [mine goes for Scootaloo in the werewolf outfit]

      ReplyDelete
    18. Lesson Zero was a retread of Party of One.

Luna Eclipsed wasn't fantastic, but I think it's the best one so far.

      ReplyDelete
    19. Next poll should be "Which pony do you want to see completely lose it next?"

      ReplyDelete
    20. lesson zero just had its moments that won me over

poll: "which pony's family would you like to know more of?"

      ReplyDelete
    21. Lesson Zero took the chaos of the first two episodes and turned the dial up just a bit too far for my liking. I preferred Luna Eclipsed because it did better with the quiet moments by actually having some. Oh, and Luna.

Next poll? Hmmm.... I second cpbrony's idea.

      ReplyDelete
    22. Run a poll about what the next poll should be. You know you can't resist!

      ReplyDelete
    23. For future polls, I suggest either "Monsters you'd most like to see in future episodes" or "One-shot characters you most hope to see again in Season 2".

      ReplyDelete
    24. I Voted for for Lesson Zero, but I personally don't agree with the Luna Goggles Comment though. I think it's easy to see why so many voted Luna Eclipsed. After wait for over 25 episode for one more appear from Luna, not knowing what to expect, I believe everyone was happily satisfied, Thus making it the best, despite mine and 627 others view on Lesson Zero being the best.

    25. @dinodude0091

Since you totally just took my question, I'm going up the ante with this:

"Which background character would you most like to have a speaking line?"

The correct answer is "VINYL SCRATCH" in all caps, by the way.

      ReplyDelete
    26. @JJ Sparkhooves

Unless I'm reading this wrong, you basically just said "I wouldn't say that it was Luna Goggles, except it was Luna Goggles."

      ReplyDelete
    27. Next poll: what should ditzy's first line of the season be?

      ReplyDelete
    28. ask how much pony merch everyone has

      ReplyDelete
    29. Oh, And the next poll should be the one Karrotline suggested: "Which pony's family would you like to know more of?". Personally, am curious about Sweetie Bell's and Raitiy's Family.

    31. What one-time S1 character do you most want to see in S2?

      * Trixie
      * Gilda
      * Photo Finish
      * Rocky

      ReplyDelete
    32. I think we all know that these type of polls will always have the newest episode as the winner...

      ReplyDelete
    33. I'm surprised The Return of Harmony Part 1 scored so low, those scenes where the ponies were "discorded" were amazing.

I agree with everyone who said Luna Eclipsed was good, but the weakest ep so far in what's been a great season.

      ReplyDelete
    34. next poll: when will LUNA be back???

    35. Luna is best pony. Episode with Luna means best Episode? Where's the confusion?

      ReplyDelete
    36. what mythical creature would you like to see in MLP that has so far been absent?

      ReplyDelete
    37. I wish there was some way to take a brony census. I want to know how many of us there are, for science!

      ReplyDelete
    38. I support the username of many numerals. Which pony would you like to see with their own episode next?

(Hint: There are four answers to choose from. Applejack, AJ, Honesty's Champion, and even more Applejack.)

      ReplyDelete
    39. Luna Eclipsed as an episode was so so but Luna was just so outrageously awesome it won for me with Lesson Zero at a very VERY close second.

It's a shame the Discord episodes feel overshadowed by those two. They were also really great episodes.

      ReplyDelete
    40. Luna Eclipsed was cute and fun. Lesson Zero was disturbing and hilarious. I can understand why many prefer the first, but I loved Lesson Zero and was still thinking about what it said about Twilight long afterwards. I also thought it was an incredibly clever way to teach a very scary and serious lesson (so many tragedies happen because people ignore the signs that someone needed help coping.)

Anyway, it's probably a repeat but I haven't seen it, so I'd like a poll on which character we'd most like to see return in a future episode. Discord? Trixie? Another Luna episode? Gilda?

Also, who should get their own song next?

      ReplyDelete
    41. @TenchiFreak5 Well, Yes and no. Maybe I'm just interpreted the phase Luna Goggles wrong. It's just that the overall anticipation for "Luna Eclipse" made it more popular than the More Epic Story "Lesson Zero". The LONG awaited questions of "What's Luna Like?" being answered made it more liked, not the whole Luna Goggles term, which I interpret as Favor-ism Due to fans of Luna.

      ReplyDelete
    42. Episode 1 & 2, rushed, resolution of 2 was awful, honestly Discord's defeat was just awful. As much as Season 1 I wanted two part epic episodes, those two turned me off to the idea.

Lesson Zero: Beat the idea of crazy "Insert Pony Name Here" to its ridiculous conclusion. As funny as seeing Twilight lose it was, I hope there never is another pony that loses it ever again. It's like telling the same joke over and over again, it stops being funny the umptenth time.

Luna Eclipsed: Yeah I'm bias, want to fight about it? You could argue it's finally having a canon Luna is the reason it gets so much love. Personally, I'm finding what they picked for Luna makes so much sense and was really the only choice. Remember, Luna, Nightmare Moon, eternal night, 1,000 years.

All in all though, none of the episodes were bad nor perfect.

But, I've watched Luna Eclipsed a lot more then the other three. I've also watched a few Season 1 episodes a lot more then the first three of season 2 which is why to me, they're not as good as Luna Eclipsed.

      ReplyDelete
    43. Favorite ship (with "none" being an option for people who don't like shipping).

      ReplyDelete
    44. Now I'm going to wonder how Luna Eclipsed is going to be looked at 20 episodes down the road and the novelty of her appearance has worn off.

      ReplyDelete
    45. a poll consisting of various suggestions here to determine what the next poll should be.

      ReplyDelete
    46. @JJ Sparkhooves ...isn't that what we meant by Luna Goggles?

Annywho, I couldn't NOT vote Ep1. Discord is an amazing character with the same type of wacky humour I've come to expect from MLP only amplified because he's allowed to. The breakdown & redemption of each of the induvisual mane six seemed to me to be an odd mix of comical villainy and real danger wrought by the deceit of the spirit Of Chaos itself. The line 'We'll see about that' sent a shiver down my spine, but the next few seconds sent me into a laughing fit. This is the sort of thing I personally love about MLP as a whole; it's deliverance. It never ceases to please and get a laugh, and this is the sort of thing that makes a cartoon a timeless legend. I'll end now, because I'm starting to rant.

      ReplyDelete
    47. How quickly we forget how much we loved Discord. I don't care what anypony else says, I still loved the premiere because it most closely followed the spirit of the first season.

      ReplyDelete
    48. Cutest pony, has that been done?

      ReplyDelete
    49. @Party Favors

AJ needs an episode all for herself. She hasn't had one since Applebuck Season. :(

      ReplyDelete
    50. @namelesspony I won't be the bit surprised if after next episode Luna Eclipsed is downgraded.

It's been a wonderful magical season so far, that's for sure.

      ReplyDelete
    51. I voted for Lesson Zero, but I really liked seeing Luna too. I really hope she's in more episodes, even if she doesn't play a big role in them.

      ReplyDelete
    52. @a12f0f98-ccfb-11e0-b0d6-000bcdcb471e
yeah i agree the next poll should be which pony should the next episode be about

as for this poll..all four episodes are awsome but still out of them luna eclipsed was my favorite, then lesson zero would be 2nd.

      ReplyDelete
    53. Which episode is the best "introductory episode" to non-bronies?

      ReplyDelete
    54. I don't get why people are saying Luna Eclipsed is only good because Luna was in it... How in the hell could there been an episode set on Nightmare Night without her? My opinion is that 'Lesson One' was the weakest, even though I like it a lot, because it's a retread 'Party of One' only it was as easy to feel sympathy for Pinkie Pie since Pinkie was depressed to the point of acting insane rather that playing Pinkie as a dangerous sociopath like they played Twilight as.

      ReplyDelete
    55. How would you react if FiM got sea ponies?

      ReplyDelete
    56. Just going to say that of all the episodes,
      2 had the best ending.

"I'll tell you what we've learned, Discord! We've learned that friendship isn't easy, but there's no doubt it's worth fighting for!"

      YEAH! You go, Twilight!
And the obvious Star Wars ending.

      ReplyDelete
    59. I've got to go for next poll being Which pony's family do we want to learn about most? I personally say Scootaloo; she's not related to any of the mane 6 while the other two CMC are. Where did she come from?

      ReplyDelete

    63. Man, this whole season has been awesome. IMO, though, it goes (best to worst) Luna Eclipsed, RoH 2, Lesson Zero, and RoH 1. Not that any of them were bad, this whole season has been amazing so far. I am so looking forward to the rest of this season. Hope to see another epic Dash episode soon! :D

      ReplyDelete
    64. @Cereal Velocity

      "Come with me, Littlepip."

Zecora to Pipsqueak in Luna Eclipsed.

      ReplyDelete
    65. I voted Return of Harmony Part 2, because it already had more votes than part 1. They're both pretty much the same episode in my eyes, and one of the high points of the series.

Lesson Zero's right down there with feeling pinkie keen for me, because of the crazy faces and characters being caricatures of themselves rather than well rounded. Sacrificing characterization for the sake of jokes is a no-no for me, and is what killed the simpsons.

Luna Eclipsed was pretty good, though. It'd be one of my favorites were it not for the plot holes introduced. And the not knowing what fun is thing was really suspension of disbelief shattering; no realistic character, no matter how sheltered, doesn't understand that.

Anywho, run this poll anytime and you'll probably see the latest episode on top. Run it again next summer, a few months after the last episode of season 2, and you'll get better results.

      ReplyDelete
    66. Episode 4 won for me because of Zecora and epic Derpy scene :)

      ReplyDelete
    67. @A Weary Exile

      ...

      You're aware that:

      1) The writers don't read fanfiction.
      2) Pipsqueak was an homage to a character from Great Expectations, which was written before any of us were born.

      Right?

Use your brain. It's not a reference to anything the fandom has done. Don't be stupid.

      ReplyDelete
    68. @ScootaDash "favored fannon character"

      ouch my spelling is bad

      ReplyDelete
    69. @Rockabore

Because you could write a book about the missed opportunities that the episode wasted, omitting one of the Mane Six being an especially large one considering what the episode represented.

Also, the inclusion of Pip (and the way that he was paraded around the episode) shows that the writing team still haven't gotten the hang of writing support characters any better than they did in S1, and I would also argue that they might be even worse at it than they were back then.

      ReplyDelete
    70. @Warden You know, That's I good point!
I change my mind, The poll should about which family do we want to learn about more. And, ya, Where did Scootaloo come from? Because we got fanfiction ranging from that she has parents, to just grandparents, to loss all long ago and get adopted by the main six.

      ReplyDelete
    71. Best Pony Musician
      Vinyl
      Octavia
Pinkie (Come on, give the 1-pony band some credit)
Other Ponies (I don't know all the background ponies... have we ever actually seen Lyra using her lyre?!)

      ReplyDelete
    72. @Cereal Velocity

Wow, one of the rudest people I've ever met happens to be a *mod* of the site. Way to go.

I don't think it was a reference to Fallout:Equestria, my friends who read it do, I don't think Aquarian Poet could be referencing anything else.

      Jesus Christ, way to overreact.

      ReplyDelete
    73. A celebrity cameo poll sounds good to me :P

      ReplyDelete
    74. Now that we actually have canon basing for the two...

Princess Celestia or Princess Luna? Who would you want to be ruled by?

      ReplyDelete
    75. @Kaijyuu
The current theory is that Luna understood the concept of fun, but not the word itself (since it's a relatively new one in real life).

      ReplyDelete
    76. NOPE! Luna Eclipsed wins! Period.< *hides Luna Goggles behind back*

      ReplyDelete
    77. New poll: Fill in the blank:

      A) Twilight
      B) Applejack

      And so on.

      ReplyDelete
    78. @Ozimul

"(I don't know all the background ponies... have we ever actually seen Lyra using her lyre?!)"

That's... actually a really good question. Have we ever seen Lyra play a lyre?

      ReplyDelete
    79. @HMorris73
Yeah some obvious reasons why that doesn't work.

      1) She understands all the other "new" words, most notably all the contractions like "don't".
      2) Really, does it look like she's discovering a word and not a concept during those scenes?

Now, if she HAD not known the word, or better yet not known the games, the scene would've worked a lot better. Back in her day, celebrations were a lot different. Discovering some culture would've been cool. Then again, I'm not a writer so my suggestions mean squat; I only know what doesn't work for me.

      ReplyDelete
    80. @HMorris73 That's what I read someone else explaining. The term, "Fun" wasn't really coined until the 1600's.

      1011-->Banished-->2011

Basically, the word, fun, Luna didn't know what the meaning of the word was. There's probably a lot more words she's never heard either, heh, heh, heh. ;P

      ReplyDelete
    81. I voted on Elements of Harmony 2. So many quotes, and Discord is forever my favorite non pony (and in the top 5 of fave characters all time!)
Also poll wise, How about favorite Cutie Marks? (It would be a really long one though XD)

      ReplyDelete
    82. So according to this poll, the show gets better with each episode. (at least this season)

      ReplyDelete
    83. @Cereal Velocity But remember, she IS one of the most paraded-around ponies other than the Mane Six. It could be entirely possible that somepony stumbled upon one of the drawings. Or custom ponies. Or music. Or- you get it. They can't read it, sure, but they can read what people yell at them saying it is the best ever.

Also you're right it's not a reference to Fallout: Equestria. That would sort of be an odd one to put out there, probably one to anger Past Sins fans ( if I know the team correctly.) because entire episode dedicated to Luna and not one reference to the insanely popular Luna fic. They'd be trollin' us. Though it's not a reference, so whatever. It'd be funny if it was.

      ReplyDelete
    84. I know, I know, have a pole to decide what costume in Nightmare Night was the best. oh I love my Idea :P

      ReplyDelete
    85. I think what rubs me wrong about every episode except for Lesson Zero of the new season is that Pinkie isn't being very Pinkie. I mean, she's still Pinkie. But they're kinda subtly hammering away at her flaws to the point that it's breaking my attachment to the character.
And seeing as my attachment to the character is kinda my attachment to the show, it kinda hurts.

In the case of Lesson Zero, her role was so minimized that it was hard to lessen my opinion of her in it. And Twilight was fun. So that's cool.

I'd like to see more expansion on AJ or Pinkie soon. Or just some silly CMC antics. Can't wait to see how they get covered in Tree Sap or some other sticky substance next.

      ReplyDelete
    86. Maybe something along the lines of "Next to the show, what part of the Fandom do you enjoy/take part in the most?"
That gives us: Art, Music, PMV's, etc... I think I'd like to see the results of that.

      ReplyDelete
    87. Lesson Zero was a really good episode, but Discord and the reversed personality ponies still take up the top spot this season for me. I guess I'm in the minority here when I say Luna Eclipsed was my least favorite of the season so far. I still really liked it, but it just didn't provide me with as much joy and laughter as the other three.

      ReplyDelete
    88. @Edwin B. Actually, that's an idea I can get behind.

Poll: Best costume on Nightmare Night.

Note: Costume, not magical transformation to keep Luna out of the poll.

      ReplyDelete
    89. @wackyteen

Lesson Zero sucked, it had none of the elements that made season one good. The mane six became one-dimensional and there was too much interaction with the camera, they became defined by a single minor character trait that we latched onto BECAUSE it was out of the norm.

Lesson Zero was essentially one big fanwank and hard to consider part of the series. Yes, it was entertaining, but come on bronies, I know we have better standards of our favorite thing ever than that.

      ReplyDelete
    90. I picked Lesson Zero, but honestly Luna Eclipsed was a very close second! What's with everyone saying it was "meh" or "so-so"? Everypony was great in that episode, especially Pinkie. "Pinkie, you're a genius!" "No I'm not; I'm a chicken! BU-CAW!"

      ReplyDelete
    91. For me my list of favorite to least was Lesson Zero > Discord P.2 > Luna Eclipsed = Discord P.1

I really have enjoyed all the episodes of the season so far. I'm quite eager to see what the show has in store for us.

      ReplyDelete
    92. I voted lesson zero. I lol'd the most during that one. Though lesdon zero will probably be replaced by the rarity episode ;) The next poll vould be halloween related. Or the "whos the best admin" I someone suggested

      ReplyDelete
    93. @Kayriel
While I agree with you, understand people watch the show for different reasons. Crazily enough, some watch it for the humor, even though there are a hell of a lot better comedy cartoons out there.

      *shrug*

      ReplyDelete
    94. I love all the episodes so far (Discord <3 Luna<3)

But if I have to choose, then Lesson Zero.

      ReplyDelete
    95. @Lurkingear
      I agree with this.

That or a poll on what fanfics do you think the writers and staff of the show should read.

      ReplyDelete
    96. I at least voted for RoH (part 1, though I loved them both). I personally find it somewhat amazing that both episodes, with such strong comedic and touching moments, amazing character development, and the brilliant baddie that was Discord could be so overshadowed by last week's episode, but I suppose "Luna Goggles" sums it up pretty nicely.

      ReplyDelete
    97. @Marshall Not at all. I was really disappointed in Luna Eclipsed because it seemed to not really be all it could have been. It was an episode, not an experience. I didn't feel dazed and dazzled when it was over like in Episode One, I kind of skipped this step and went onto telling all my friends about how cool it was.

      ReplyDelete
    98. @Cereal Velocity

      a lil harsh dontya think?

      ReplyDelete
    99. @Kayriel

"Lesson Zero sucked, it had none of the elements that made season one good."

Oh? You know everyone's reasons for enjoying Season 1?

Because I personally thought that the character exaggeration for the purposes of comedy was fantastic in Lesson Zero, and I got far more entertainment out of it than I ever did at any point in S2E4; which at times seemed to devolve into "The Pip Show Starring Pip".

      ReplyDelete
    100. @Kaijyuu
*shrugs* Well yeah, we don't really know for sure about the words since things are obviously different in the show. Whatever the case it probably could have been done better, but no I didn't think it looked like she was just discovering fun as a concept for the first time personally.

      ReplyDelete
    101. @Kayriel
You know, not enjoying the episode is perfectly fine, but straight out saying it sucked, and needlessly saying it to somebody who DID enjoy it really isn't necessary.

      ReplyDelete
    102. @HMorris73
Fair 'nough. If you saw it that way, I'm in no position to say otherwise :)

      ReplyDelete
    103. i agree with aquaman52 and dinodude0091 : a poll about the background characters.

      ReplyDelete
    104. How about a poll for funniest scene

      ReplyDelete
    105. You guys are too quick to forget DIscord and chocolate rain. I am disappoint. Pinkie drinking chocolate milk > the season so far.

      ReplyDelete
    106. Luna Eclipsed got my vote purely on three scenes:

      - Fluttershy's speaking 'lesson' (up there with the opening of Sonic Rainboom as far as I'm concerned)
      - Pinkie _laying an egg_ (I completely cracked up at that, I can't even explain why)
      - Rainbow's pranking (which admittedly is multiple scenes culminating in being pranked herself at the end, but... deal with it)

There are other good spots as well for me but those stuck out more poignantly in my mind.

Throughout Lesson Zero I kept getting more of a crazed/creepy Cheshire cat vibe than anything else. Though I'll admit the scenes with Fluttershy taking down the bear and Big Mac with that doll were awesome, they were the only parts I really liked in that episode.

To be honest I hadn't really considered the first two at all or gave them even the slightest thought. Perhaps that was callous as there were a lot of scenes in part 2 that were utterly fantastic. I'd still have to go with Luna Eclipsed.

All that said... I don't know that I actually -like- this version of Luna much and apparently prefer the more demure, group-sourced fanon version(s).

... Looking back on this whole post I put entirely too much thought into this yet am completely blank on a new poll.

      my list is like this:

      RoH p1 > Luna Eclipsed > Lessen Zero > RoH p2

I feel that, the first bit of pacing aside, Return 1 had some of the best scenes in the entire series. It was the first episode of the series that generally creeped me out a bit, especially the music. Plus, Discord was absolutely BRILLIANT.

Luna Eclipsed had some great moments as well, but it falls short because of Pip, who I feel was a bit too bland. Luna was a ton of fun, and I liked how they handled her character, but it also has the fault of NO RARITY.

Lesson Zero was enjoyable, and had some great moments, but there were several points that just felt...incongruous with the rest of the series' tone. While Pinkie's breakdown in Party of One was a bit unsettling, she never delved into the over-the-topness of Twilight's facial expressions.

Return of Harmony p.2 is at the bottom mostly because of the pacing. While it was still a good episode, the rushed ending just felt too off-center for my liking, and I felt the resolution could have been handled better. While my opinion of it has improved upon repeat viewings, it still feels like the weakest episode of the season.

that went on way longer than I meant it to.

    108. Do one about which background/minor character you would like to see be the focus of an episode. The options could be Spike, Big Mac, Cheerilee, etc.

Or do another favorite pony poll because I wasn't here for the first one.

    109. "Was there ever any doubt?" Hah. I think we all knew that one was going to win anyway. Or at least I was pretty sure most would vote it. :P

Only four people mentioned? I dunno, Seth... think more than four people work on the show. lol I'm just givin' ya a hard time.

Honestly, I voted Luna Eclipsed as well. But not only because I love Luna and thought it was a great episode. But also because I have a fondness for Halloween episodes as a whole.

But yes, all the episodes are wonderful. Lesson Zero was a close second for me when it comes to the ones that have already been aired. :)

Whatever your problems with Lesson Zero understand that unless you think the creators of the show are liars it was *not* directed toward us.

Also, telling people who liked the ep that they should have better standards is incredibly condescending.

    114. Luna Eclipsed really wasn't that great of an episode, and only won this poll because Luna finally appeared again. :/

Honestly, I did absolutely loooove Lesson Zero ((it made me laugh harder than any episode before it)), but I voted for Return of Harmony Part 2 because Discord is the best villain I have ever seen. Ever. He made both the first two episodes for me my favorite two of the series.

But yeah... Luna Eclipsed really has been the weakest season 2 episode so far. Not trying to offend anypony, but it just... was. *shrug*

What brings you back and keeps you interested in the show?

      - The comedy
      - The heartwarming
      - The action
      (insert more if desired)

Prove mr. Kayriel right or wrong about what most people watch the series for.

    117. I voted Luna Eclipsed because it was Halloween(Nightmare Night) themed and everypony was in costume. Also, we had Derpy and first Zecora of season 2.

But, I got to admit that the scene where Zecora was telling the story of NMM, and then Luna bursting through the clouds, was pretty awesome.

      ReplyDelete
    118. I voted Luna Eclipsed solely because of the Zecora love. Her costume is the best, as well.

    121. Not gonna lie... I voted Return of Harmony pt 2. Solely for Discord and his exploding chocolate milk of glass. That and chaotic ponyville. And Screwball. And Tom. And "big crown thingy!". And "your face!"

Yeah... so many good moments. It felt like season 1, the right amount of comedy, fluffiness, and story. Not enough plot.

      j/k about the plot.

    122. favorite episode... well, i'm going with lesson zero (lol'd to death!), then return of harmony pt 1 (discord was just epic) , then pt 2, then luna eclipsed... don't get me wrong, i really liked the personality they gave luna, it's just that the episode as a whole wasnt as great as the others (still great though), in my opinion.

as for the poll, i'm going with the background characters stuff some people have mentioned!

    125. Lesson Zero was pure comedy, and I like that. I hope we see a few more episodes like that in the future. (But not TOO many...)

      ReplyDelete
    126. I kinda wish they would have combined Ep1/2 for the voting. I can't really call one of the episodes on its own "the best episode so far" but as a 2 parter, maybe.

Also people will very often vote for the most recent episode, so this poll is absolutely no suprise.

My vote went for Lesson Zero because, well, it was hilarious. Luna Ecplipsed came in a close second, and the 2 parter would have had a better chance if it had been considered one episode for the voting.

For the next vote? I'd say "Who is best pony of the mane 6" but that will most likely be biased if it is done immediately after an episode that was mostly about only one of the characters.

    127. Luna goggles? Bah!

Luna Eclipsed was the funniest episode so far.

Inadvertently terrifying Luna is amazing. With her huge goth chariot, overzealous use of magic, and evil-looking cloak. Brilliant.

Plus, Halloween episodes are almost always the best.

      ReplyDelete
    128. I got to see Rainbow Dash weaponize her Sonic Rainboom, Fluttershy wrestle down a bear, Twilight cause massive discord while insane, and Princess Celestia actually angry. And it was awesome. That's why I voted for Lesson Zero.

    129. Nope, I'm sorry. Discord, Flutterbitch, implied history and world building, cool perspective tricks, aerial chase sequence, Liarjack face, kaRarity, Tom, Orbital Friendship Cannon Mk.2, Star Wars ending, Discord, and frankly just some of the best acting in the whole show, which is saying something. Return still gets my vote.

    130. While that response from Cereal was harsh, people need to realize that the people who actually work on the show don't know as much about fanon as most would like to think, and they certainly didn't know that much when these episodes were being made. I mean come on, the Pip reference to Great Expectations is obvious, and this episode was probably getting worked on before Fallout: Equestria was even a big thing.

    131. What is your favourite genre of Fanfiction?

      ReplyDelete
    132. I'm on the family background poll. I'd like to learn where our favorite ponies come from. We've seen Twilight's parents, and regardless of whether people take Pinkie's origin story literally or not, she has show her parents as well. RD, FS, Rarity, and AJ have no mention of parents, while AJ has a grandmother and extended family that we HAVE seen. AJ and Rarity have little sisters, and for AJ, a big brother. Poor little Scootaloo has so little background that fanfics sometimes put her as an orphan!!! Talk about no love!

I'd like to see a poll that determines who's family backgrounds we'd like to see most elaborated on.

 Applejack, Applebloom, and Big Mac share close family bonds, but why did Granny Smith have to raise them, and not their parents.

९ Pinkie Pie is an enigma. So strange is she, that despite telling her family story, ponies simply don't believe her, Just how much truth is in her story anyway?

✶ Twilight Sparkle's early family life must have been very different from life under Princess Celestia's wing. What was her transition from family to student life like.

♢ Rarity and Sweetie Belle love each other dearly, but Where. Are. The. Parents! Where did the sisters come from, and why does Rarity care for her young sister alone?

☁ Rainbow Dash was from Cloudsdale, but we don't know her family.
𐑿 Was there a reason her best friend was a Griffon, why she was teased, or why she left home?

ʚɞ Fluttershy also comes from Cloudsdale, but we know nothing of her family life, or why she's so timid?

✗ Scootaloo, Scoot-Scootaloo! Just where are you from? ARE YOU A SPY!!! Nope, Scoots is too chicken to be a spy! The poor little blank flank has absolutely no established history... It's as if she suddenly appeared from a strange parallel world where her idol always dresses in style?

☼ Celestia and Luna must live unique lives in Canterlot castle today,
☽ but what was life between them like a millennium ago? What was their story.

    137. I still don't understand why Lesson Zero is so much more popular than the Return of Harmony parts 1 & 2? Are memes really all that matter to you guys? Lesson Zero had more disturbing moments than funny ones, and the complete removal of limiters of the powers of SOMEponies was rather disconcerting (although complaining about plot continuity in MLP is like complaining about too many explosions in a Michael Bay movie). Luna Eclipsed, even after I've done my best to distance myself from the LUNA goggles, is, in my opinion, the funniest episode yet. The Return of Harmony Parts 1 & 2 are, in my opinion, the best episodes so far, but Luna Eclipsed just edges them out as my favorite, at this point because LUNA. That might change in the future. Heck, season 2 still has a long way to go!

    144. @NDupree93

I stated my opinion in response to an opinion. Not criticizing his opinion or anyone else who enjoyed the episode more than I did. Just how I feel about it.

You, on the otherhoof, are going after my opinion directly, and out of line with the spirit of which it was posted.

If you simply misunderstood me, I apologize for not being clear.

But quite frankly I stand by it. It was... very flat, to have our favorite ponies' personalities stretched thin and emphasis placed on a trait that should only be entertaining because it's not all the time thing?

Would you enjoy Fluttershy if she was Angryshy or Psychoshy the rest of the season? Or if Rarity never got off her drama couch?

In Lesson Zero, Twilight completely sacrificed her emphasis on being efficient for a sudden and inexplicable burst in her stress-related OCD, befoer she was even stressed. In season one, would Twilight have let such a thing as an extra cupcake bother her? She'd have just given the extra to Spike, given her previous personality, wherein here he wasn't even a consideration and instead she freaked over icing.

Rainbow Dash taking orders from Applejack? Rainbow Dash being practically hyperactive? An easily-performed rainboom? Dash has at least minor issues with authority. Dash is generally seen as lazy unless she's practicing or showing off her aerial stunts (demolition is not an aerial stunt, for reference) or part of some sort of challenge/competition. Instead we see her destroying a building, and doing an unnecessary ground-roll to stop in front of Twilight. On the note of the atomic rainboom, while entertaining, the rainboom was shown to be the result of extreme circumstances pushing her to the limit of her abilities - a powerful point of character.

Rarity completely disregards her own character entirely to focus on the drama queen aspect she was tagged for. First and foremost, she's always prided herself in her ladyship, that she is regal and refined. Instead Rarity seems to be summed up as a drama queen... in a very un-ladylike fashion she throws herself down with the slightest provocation, with no sense of her poise and grace, to complain about the least thing. An utter betrayal to her portrayal in the first season.

Applejack... was Applejack, good on 'em but I don't think you can mess up Applejack easily. Pinkie's lack of fourth wall/script sense/reality bending antics made me sad, but I can't really complain there because she's still silly and I just want to hug her.

Finally we come to Fluttershy. Woo, she killed a bear! Okay, I'll admit, that was pretty sweet, the whole chiropractic scene there. But at the same time, while I agree it'd take that much force to be able to affect a one-ton bear's muscles in any meaningful manner, since when does Fluttershy move that fast and possess that much physical ability? And with the overwhelming confidence she seemed to display in doing so? She very easily could have said, "Um, I'd like you to lie down on your stomach, please. If you don't mind, I need to be able to reach your back and shoulders."

And one last thing. Princess Celestia. I love Celestia, but it was the girls' interactions with her that caught my attention. They just rolled up into a private discussion between the god-queen of Equestria and her personal protege without so much as asking admission or if they could be listened to. In fact, they -demanded- of their absolute ruler that she stay her hoof and mouth and hear them out. Hell, Twilight plain out -tells- her to wait. There's not the slightest providence for any of that, either.

Lesson Zero was fun, yes. It was entertaining, and I enjoyed it. I just don't feel like it was a welcome addition to the continuity that we've (hopefully) all come to love and appreciate from season one. It's probably just me, but that's why this is my opinion. I hope I'm not the only one who believes something isn't great just because one can clap their hands and giggle at it.

But as I stated, that's just this brony's opinion. Not aimed at making anyone feel put out, just that I was personally disappointed with the episode. Luna Eclipsed seemed to fall back into season one style, so I am happy once again.

    152. While all the episodes (except maybe ROH part 1) have been good in and of themselves, there are a few things I find a bit disconcerting.

There hasn't really been any noteworthy character development, and in some ponies have been acting seemingly out of character, or at least in a very exaggerated way.

      Some notable ones:
      * (ROH P1) Pinkie Pie arguing to leave Discord alone for the sake of chocolate rain - even if she likes sweets, she would never choose it over the continued well-being of her friends and Ponyville
      * (LZ) Rainbow Dash SRB'ing Applejack's barn in 10 seconds flat... I mean WTF... I thought SRB was supposed to be something rare and difficult to pull off, not something to be used casually for demolition work.
      * (LZ) Rarity being overly dramatic over minor things. Even if she could be a bit of a drama queen sometimes, it is WAY too exaggerated in this episode.
      * (LZ) Twilight being a bit over-the-top in her reaction to being unable to find something to write about to Celestia. I could see her getting a bit nervous or even sad, but turning into a psychotic wreck seemed a bit over the edge. Don't get me wrong though, I love the episode. It's by far the best of the season so far, and I might even argue (despite those few gripes I have with it) one of the best episodes of the series so far.
      * (LE) Insufficient Rarity. Seriously, what were they thinking?
      * (LE) Pip. I mean, as adorably annoying (or annoyingly adorable?) as he is, I'm pretty sure his role could have easily been filled by one or all of the Cutie Mark Crusaders, rather than unnecessarily introducing a new character. Then again, maybe they only added him because the show needed more male ponies.
      * (ROH P1 and LE) Feels rushed. Not in the production sense, but story-wise. I can understand this is needed because they needed to cram so much into a single 22-minute episode, but that still doesn't change the fact that it feels rushed, while most S1 episodes had a more natural pace.
      * (All of S2) None of Daniel Ingram's epic songs!

I know we're only 4 episodes in so far, so it's probably too early to worry, but unless they add some more naturally-paced character development, S2 might just end up lacking the "magic" of S1.

    156. @Kayriel

Regarding the last paragraph, the comment regarding the disapproval of how the Mane 6 acted towards Celestia as she lectured Twilight in the library at the end of "Lesson Zero"...

I honestly am shocked by how people seem to be oblivious to Celestia's casual nature. How many times has Celestia placed confidence in those 6 ponies. How many times has she spoken to them as friends, and not as peasants, exalting and honoring them. How many times has she tried to be friendly, humorous, and casual as opposed to regal and formal. How many times has she expressed annoyance with how ponies overreact around her (tea troll anypony?).

The simple fact of the matter is, I don't believe Celestia or Luna are intended to be even remotely close to "god like" in the series. They ARE the most powerful ponies in the series, but they are not ALL powerful, and they ARE ponies. They can suffer the same kinds of pain and emotional trauma as every other pony. Luna's fall was a perfect example of this fallible state. Celestia and Luna are still ponies. They just have vastly greater roles to play in their world than most ponies, and vastly greater responsibilities.

I think moments like these, the outburst of Twilight's friends, must be a blessing to a pony like Celestia. Her life is filled with so much pomp and routine and tradition... It's obvious that when she lost Luna a thousand years prior, that she lost the one pony who could remain at her side from one generation to the next. The poor mare has to watch every pony she cares for grow old and die, and to add insult to injury, most ponies seem to act fearfully toward the very idea of offending her. Since Luna is no longer with her, I imagine eliminating the use of ☾ THE ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE ☽™ and becoming more gentle and loving toward her subjects were easy ways to lead ponies to love and respect her more, instead of fearing her. Most importantly, taking personal students is possibly one of the most significant ways for her to have ponies who are close enough to her genuinely love her, and not just fear her...

This factor would exasperate her frustration with Twilight's behavior, and justify her most significant outburst of the entire series, on par with, or even exceeding, the intensity of her dialog with even Discord himself! Her trusted, loving, faithful student was acting just like any other fearful pony, not realizing the vastness of the love that Celestia shares with her closest friend beyond Luna, and it likely hurt her deep inside to see that.

To see Rainbow Dash, fearlessly jump between her and Twilight, and to see her and all her other friends come to both her defense, and to offer to take up the blame... An act of love and compassion, showing no fear in standing up to Celestia... These were ponies, who for a moment, acted without fear of any consequence, who acted as ponies confronting just another pony. It was clear in Celestia's face that she was playing the whole scenario to her ultimate goals, waiting out their explanations and excuses, and instantly showed her affection to her 6 closest friends (again, besides her beloved sister) by making it clear there would be no punishment, if they all partake in the very thing that keeps Twilight so lovingly close to her side.

If she didn't plan that result specifically, she gladly played her hoof towards it as her ultimate goal.

Celestia looked quite satisfied with the results of the night. She became closer to her little ponies, and strengthened all the friendships they share.

I think Celestia was far from offended by the reactions of the 5 mare's standing up for Twilight. Twilight's actions were the only actions that I see as directly offending Celestia. I'd say that Twilight's actions may have even been hurtful towards Celestia. I stand by my feeling that Celestia would not have been offended by being stood up to by her friends.

    157. Well, once all the season two episodes have aired, we should do a poll with the same question as this one.

For the next poll, Favourite Season 1 song? Although if a Musical Episode occurs this season, it might be best to put that poll before that episode airs.

I'm glad you said "seem" oblivious, for this is very much not the case. However, since we are not shown nor is it implied she interacts with the Mane Six on a constant basis, they themselves would not have reason to be so casual with her. That was my issue. Celestia herself seems to consider them as friends and valued subjects, helping her protect their land. But these are just simple ponies confronted with their deity and monarch.

Previous confrontations show them appropriately wary/prostrate, and I don't believe Celestia would require that, but at the same time I'd expect to see why they get over it. Otherwise it just seems like "Oh, they don't really care, you see." or "We forgot/it wasn't dynamic enough to do it that way."

I must disagree. Unfortunately, the ponies who aren't Twilight didn't get much screentime and what we saw of them wasn't making them one-dimensional but showing what they'd seem like if you only saw that much into their lives.

What I mean is, take Rarity for example. In the episodes where she was a well-developed character, Suited for Success, Green isn't your Color and A Dog and Pony Show, she was overreacting there. So have her overreact in Lesson Zero was hardly subtracting from her character. The only difference is is how trivial the things she was being dramatic about were. You might say that that was a bad move, but if someone were just passing though ponyville and didn't have any prior experience of Rarity's personality, I'm sure she'd seem to be a drama queen to them. So the fact that she got little screen time sort of justifies the way she came across in the episode. Had she had more screentime, she might have actually had relevance to the plot other than losing a ribbon and thus have something to do other than be dramatic.

As for Rainbow, I don't think of the explosion thing as a Rainboom. I'm just taking it as general cartoonyness. And helping Applejack isn't entirely out of character. She might be lazy but I doubt she'd pass the opportunity to smash something to bits. I'm lazy, but when someone's tearing down wallpaper or throwing trees into a shredder, I help because it's fun to destroy stuff! Plus they're friends and it was nice to see some of the mane 6 interact with each other without it being a driving plot point or because Twilight was there.

As for crazy Twilight, they did play it a bit too much, but it was pretty much the same Twilight we saw in Swarm of the Century just played out longer. I don't think much of what she did was particularly out of character, just over-exaggerated. Like her OCD in the beginning, I can believe her being a bit worried about the amount of icing on the cakes, maybe showing that she still hasn't learned enough about friendship to know that a tiny bit of icing doesn't matter (though that's just me being over-analytical which is fine for Star Trek but kinda silly for mlp I'll admit), but I doubt she would've reduced the amount of icing to a tiny blob. The thing is, most of these things were for the sake of humour. Which, while I understand can't be a justification for things you may not like, doesn't really alter the canon of the show.

Though I do agree about your point about Celestia at the end.

I have no idea how well I explained any of that, apologies if I ramble or am generally bad at getting a point across :(

    163. I'll say one thing, it's been nice to see Celestia come out of her shell a bit more. She was way too content/devoid of emotions in the first season.

I'm not saying that things couldn't be explained, fellow brony. I'm not saying they aren't even plausible. All I was voicing my complaint about was that was all we got to see of our girls, making them flat characters. Especially if that was going to continue to be the case.

"Also, what do you mean by removal of power limiters? What did Twilight (I assume that's who you mean) do that she shouldn't have been able to?"

Teleports, WAAAAY to many teleports. There were times in season 1 (e.g. being chased by a Hydra) when teleports would have been very helpful, but she was unable to do it. She teleported more times in one episode than she did in the previous 28. Also, while awesome, Sonic Rainukes should be saved for a more dire situation than...demolishing Applejack's old barn. A Sonic Rainboom is said to be stuff of legend, and how did Rainbow Dash react to going to beyond legendary speeds? "Deal with it." Hilarious, yes, but not the best idea in my opinion.

And to answer your question TenchFreak5, yes, one character can change my opinion on an episode. Using the value of the featured character in the episode as the determinant of an episode's quality is not an oversimplified evaluation. If you understand that methods of evaluation of an episode are all opinion anyway, then you should be able to tolerate others methods of evaluation.

Of course, I was equally guilty of this too in my post, so I apologize to all those who loved Lesson Zero for the memes. I just happen to "watch the show for the plot" (I find it necessary to point out that the portion in sarcastic quotes is a joke).

That's because after Applebuck Season she didn't teleport at all until The Return of Harmony Part 2. There's no reason to think she *couldn't* do it during that time (Applebuck Season had her using it pretty casually), so it was most likely just because the writers didn't want to her too. If you want an in-story explanation though she may have either forgotten about the spell or was taking the time to perfect it. Luna Eclipsed had her teleporting as well, though not quite as much.

THANK YOU. C'mon people, pick up a book and get off the internet once in a while. Pip is clearly a reference to Great Expectations/other annoying orphan characters in Dickens's works. It's embarrassing when people think that the writers are that invested in the fandom.

    185. I LOVED the Return of Harmony Pt 2. The others were pretty good too, but I just thought that episode was hilarious AND heartwarming.

Also, I don't remember if there was already a poll like this, but maybe something like, Which pony do you identify with most? My guess for the poll results would be a lot of Twilights and Fluttershys.

    186. Man... Judging from the comments, I feel like the bronies who disapproved of Lesson Zero are simply ruining it for themselves. You're free to prefer your respective best episodes, but to bash on LZ seems rather unsportsmanlike... it didn't even WIN. In any event, you're saying it isn't okay for you to simply look past the details and enjoy something that's supposed to entertain you in more of a "thrilling" sense than a "literary" one? I feel sorry for the dimension of fun you've decided to restrict yourselves from.

I have been brought in by some of the character development as well. I recognize the artful execution of RD's first on-screen sonic rainboom performed to save her friend. I recognize the level of inner strength Fluttershy has been shown to muster to stand up to a dragon and stare a cockatrice in the eye. I recognize Rarity's grace and ethic that shapes her character. Does this mean that we've lost all excuse to even sort of parody some of these characteristics for ONE episode? But very well... let's talk rationalism for this cartoon:

RD's sonic rainboom may have once been something she used to have a hard time achieving, but that was because she hadn't done it in a long time. If she regrasped the feeling at the time she saved Rarity (which may very well have been having BOTH hooves out instead of just one), I could see her being able to perform it casually with continued practice. Fact of the matter is, it's still not quite like the one she did as a filly.

"Sonic Rainukes should be saved for a more dire situation than...demolishing Applejack's old barn."

Sonic Rainnukes have a relatively small area of effect the way RD employed it. Also, the only radiation involved is friendship particles, so no ill effects may be felt. It is a practical use of explosives, if you ask me. There is little need to moderate its usage as far as I can see, just so long as nopony gets hurt... and no pony did that time.

Fluttershy... well, that was most assuredly done for the sake of denying Twilight Sparkle the possibility of helping her out... and because Hasbro was trying REALLY hard to create a meme on purpose. I mean, it was a bear...I'm thoroughly SOLD. "Are you not entertained?" says Maximus Fluttershyicus Meridius.

Rarity's couch coming out in the middle of the picnic... you didn't think that was funny? Tough crowds, I gotta say. She needed to be a drama queen to set that joke up in the first place.

I will say that Twilight reminds me very much of what I used to be... an uptight, though well-meaning intellectual who was also an aspiring perfectionist. Whereas I would sometimes experience emotional fits over some of my failings, the intensity of anxiety leading Twilight to her insanity and desperation was very similar in that episode. Even today, there are expectations I hold of myself that I make a matter of life or death for me. This episode reminded me of where I might have gone if I took things too far. I saw moral value in Lesson Zero because of Twilight. As for the teleport hax, I cite the same liberty to develop off-screen as for Rainbow Dash. Magic can be perfected over time... just like how Twilight used to struggle to turn a page in a book, but then she could do so casually by the time she was a mare (and doing so rapidly). Teleportation was just another trick that she had been perfecting before those few times she was shown using it.

    187. Come on, everypony, what happened to love and tolerance? The amount of episode bashing here is kind of sad. Personally, while I already liked Luna for being... well, Luna, the episode itself made me appreciate her as a *character*. I don't think it's just the Luna goggles.
