Actually there were a whole lot of theories similar to this that were discussed amongst the fans. So uh yeah not really suprised here but it makes sense.
Her explanation is exactly what I told myself when I saw those screenshots. It seems to make the most sense.

That's my interpretation on her mane change as well. I assume it takes a lot of magic to get their manes to look like that anyways.

That's exactly what I thought the reason behind her new look would be.
Avery Strange with Spark (a fanfic) called it! Luna starts off weak, and slowly grows in stature and her hair gives off its magic aura as she gets stronger. cool!

So we can expect Twi to get a shiny mane and tail too? Because I can see her, through fully learning her magic potential, slowly over time gaining massive magical power and that will show through her somehow.

You can't have grown attached to her appearance after just a few seconds of time on screen, it honestly doesn't matter.

I think her new look isn't bad at all. I figured Celestia had a normal mane before her magic level went over 9000, so why not Luna? PLUS, you can see in the screenshot she still as her cute little curl in her mane. <3

That being said, my idea was that she just didn't want to style it that way. Celestia styles hers like that every day because she's very extroverted and outgoing and Luna is more conservative with her mane and is rather introverted so she kept a simple haircut.
...At least that was MY idea...
Actually, while I won't REJECT this explanation (I mean, come on, It's Lauren) I'm still a little disappointed since this seems to be the explanation posed in a ton of fanfics. I was hoping the real explanation would be something more... original. Or at least subverting of expectation like mine.

I wasn't clear - I meant pandering to classical cliched personalities and plots. How many shows do there have to be where a good ruler is turned bad due to some metaphysical influence (or evil adviser) before someone pushes an envelope? That's what I was lamenting.

I don't think Twilight and Rarity will EVER get cool flowing manes. They are unicorns, but not ALICORNS.
I know Twilight's specialty is magic, but I honestly believe that alicorns have more magic. Alicorns have the combined magic and innate talents of all 3 races. Twilight is only a unicorn, and while she can cast spells better than anypony, she has less magic than Celestia and Luna because she is only a unicorn and does NOT have the genetics of the other 2 races to provide her with more magical ability.
I'm not ruling out the possibility that someday in the future Twi may become as powerful as Celestia, but for now I don't see it.

To be fair, I have no idea who's currently running the show now (I never read the ending credits to Lesson Zero), but I will accept this as an explanation for it.
Since Luna was gone for the entirety of season 1, I will now accept this explanation of "Because Luna was recovering." There, now we don't have to feel bad for Luna never appearing. Instead of the real reason, which was "We couldn't find a place to fit her in."
I accept this as canon!
Of course I treat everything I see on EQD as canon until the show proves otherwise. Especially after Derpy became canon.
