Thanks, I got that she could leave For a while for homages birthday I just wasn't entirely sure if she would/ was able to fully leave ( I forgot about the damage to her body) I guess I was just hoping for an ending where homage and Littlepip could live happily together ( even I that was years into the future)
ReplyDeleteI, at first, thought this story was based solely on Fallout 3 with just a little Vegas thrown in, but recently I decided to play the first two games in the series and discovered my error. Kkat has taken lore from the entire Fallout universe and expertly woven it with our beloved pastel equine. If you enjoy Fallout: Equestria, try playing all the fallout games, not just the newest ones. This will give you the chance to become a citizen of Ten-Pony Tower, battle with The Goddess in Maripony, ect. It's funny how much fun the events of these game can be when you play them while thinking of their ponified versions!
ReplyDeleteIt took me 6 months finally finish this. I just never got enough time to ever read more than a couple pages a day, but I would occasional get so into it, I just had to put aside time to read it more.
ReplyDeleteIts a great fic, and I don't think I'll ever read one quite like it ever again.
I really don't have many words to describe it, as I'm stilled kinda shocked and saddened from the ending as I just finished it a few hours earlier.
Its just, and amazing story. That's all there is really to say. It really was wonderful.
Again, Its a great fic, and I hope to get enough time to read it over again. ( Going to read some of the side fics first)
* Spoliers *
I just hope Littlepip gets some time out of that steel coffin every once and a while. I'm sure an hour or two couldn't screw up the entirety of equestria right?
That's the only thing that really bothered me about the ending. I'm sure its quite hard to be stuck in there for such a long time. And quite depressing.
So does she ever come out of that thing? Even for short bursts here and there?
@Randall116
ReplyDeleteAs stated in the Ten Years Later, she's free to leave on occasion and does so regularly on Homage's birthday to celebrate. She just can't stay outside for long because her accumulated traumas have dramatically reduced her lifespan; she's effectively immortal in the pod but all her time outside adds up and too much of it (probably in the vicinity of a few years, but we have no real info there) kills her. And when she finally dies, unless there's a replacement that the whole Wasteland can trust lined up, things get very bad very fast.
...Given that this question was asked five lines above and answered four, I'm beginning to suspect trolling. Though it's understandable that people wouldn't want to read the thousands of comments, and I suppose some would avoid even the last page out of fear of missing context of discussion or being drawn into the rest? Eh, nevermind.
@Sindri
ReplyDeleteNO NO, I actually read it, and I'm not trolling. I just Didn't believe it really. So I asked again XD
and yea, I didn't really want to go through thousands of comments. I just went through 10 or so back from here and 10 forward from the front.
basically I was asking again, for someone else to tell me the same thing, for confirmation lol.
Sorry for any confusion.
and somehow I capped my "no's".
ReplyDeleteSorry about that. XD
And behold! I finally found the place where people actively discuss FOE.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.reddit.com/r/falloutequestria/
wait, the audio books only go to chapter 22? but i'm too slow of a reader to read the other half :(
ReplyDelete@shanon cornelius
ReplyDeleteScorch_Mechanic's audiobook project goes to Chapter 24 currently.
CrazedRamblings' audiobook project just put out Chapter 38 and should be done with the entire story by Christmas.
I have to say Khat. This book brought me to tears in the end. I appreciate the beautiful piece of equestria you brought into this world. I am so sad it's over, I KNEW those characters. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThis story was amazing. I officially declare it cannon.
ReplyDeleteSo I am reading my hard copies of Fallout durning my breaks at work. Wile I was reading them I came to the part where the hellhounds where talking about making a headless pony to scare ponies away and was think that was a cool reference to the show...then it hit me!
ReplyDeleteKkat how the heck do you keep getting lucky like that!?! There are so many things in the books that reference the show before it's in the show!!!
@crazyredemu
ReplyDeleteIn "Look Before you Sleep", Twilight Sparkle tells a story about a "headless horse".
I am baffled. Is this some kind of elaborate joke?
ReplyDelete@jack
ReplyDeleteYep. You caught us. The fact is, Lauren Faust doesn't even exist. For the past two and a half years or so, a couple million friends got together and decided to pull the biggest, most elaborate, relatively harmless troll in known history. It started out simple... 'hey, what if there was this genius who was behind a lot of other decent cartoons, and they revived My Little Pony so it was actually good?' 'Yeah, and what if they did so well at making it accessible to people other than little girls, that it started getting thousands of adult fans? Like, most of them guys who called themselves something ridiculous like Bronies or whatever?' It was big, and ambitious, but mostly just harmless fun. Then it grew. People started writing fanfictions for a show that didn't exist. News stories got written about our little prank, and none of them seemed to catch on. People made up characters to cosplay as at conventions. It was like... you ever hear of the Homestuck anime? It was like that, turned up to eleven. But it's gone on too long. I'm tired of the deception, so I'm ending it here. Friendship is Magic never happened. You've been trolled.
@jack
ReplyDeleteBut along the way, some people made some damn fine literature under the label of 'pony fanfiction,' and this is one of the best pieces. So if you have several hours to spare and don't mind the fact that it was originally made just to reinforce one of the greatest deceptions of modern times, I'd recommend you give it a read.
And best comment of the day goes to Sindri!
ReplyDelete@Scorch_Mechanic and now I just feel silly
ReplyDelete@Sindri
ReplyDeleteOh, I did try to read it. That's why I am baffled.
I have read up to chapter 7, and so far I can't stand it. Is there something that will completely change my view? Is there a drastic change in the way the story is written?
@jack Do you have a reason that you don't like it? You're not going to get a real response if all you're saying is "I don't like it." In a trolling manner.
ReplyDelete@crazyredemu
ReplyDeleteThis mostly has to do with how the story feels like a novelization of a playthrough from a game. I find it jarring how elements from Fallout universe were implemented in this fic.
I assume author wanted the experience to feel reminiscent of how she felt while playing the game, so the reader can go through the same motions as her. I admit, the concept seems unique, but I just can't stand how reading a story feels like playing a game (elements that worked for a game, do not seem to work for a story). I don't know what exactly author was going for, but couldn't this be achieved without integration of Fallout universe?
Now, what baffles me is how people seem to enjoy this story and how much praise it receives.
@jack
ReplyDeleteMostly how the best parts of the story don't happen until the second volume begins around ch 14 to 16 when Khat really started getting very awesome.
You really need to read the whole thing to get it. And again, it's not for everyone.
@jack
ReplyDeleteI'd say, if you don't enjoy it yet, don't force yourself to keep reading. It doesn't change dramatically.
I personally loved the way Kkat integrated elements of Fallout with MLP without just cut and pasting them.
@jack
ReplyDeleteIrony is "How can people like something I don't like?" coming from a brony.
That said, reading the first seven chapters of this story is a lot like watching the first fifteen minutes of "The Hobbit".
If you walk out of the movie at that point because you just don't like dwarves, think hobbits are silly and really don't see the appeal of a movie without explosions and laser guns... then you've made the right choice because the movie isn't going to get any more appealing to you.
If you left because all it seemed to be was a movie about an awkward dinner, and then wonder why other people would consider that "exciting", then you have judged the movie without really seeing what it had to show you. Don't expect to understand why it's loved.
Merry Christmas (Hearth's Warming, or associated Happy Holidays) everypony and brony!
ReplyDeleteThank you for continuing to make this community someplace very special.
^.^
@jack
ReplyDeleteWell, at least you gave the story an honest chance, which is more than some people. The reasons you say you don't like it, are exactly some of the reasons I enjoy it. To each their own. For me, I loved how the Fallout elements were integrated with MLP, such as the pegasi forming the enclave, griffin mercenaries, villians, and other more spoilery things. I also love how Kkat built on the mane 6 as characters, how they all reacted to war and what they each did differently in trying to help Equestria. Her own characters are great, beautifully written, and most importantly, believable.
Action, drama, twists, feels... this story has it all. I make no exaggerations when I say it is the best thing I have ever read. I cannot thank Kkat enough for the amazing adventure she has given all of us, the effort put in this story truly shows. Thank you Kkat. ^_^
@Kkat
I actually wrote a small thing to celebrate the anniversary of Fallout Equestrias completion, you can read it here.

@Kkat
ReplyDeleteIt's been a year now since this story's completion. Thank you Kkat for this amazing story. In the year since it ended there have been hundreds of sidestories, tons of art, and the book has been put into hardback form. I hear you've finally gotten your copies of it. I hope you enjoy it.
Congratulations Kkat, and Merry Christmas!

ReplyDeleteDifferent people might like different things... I suppose. Still, do you just assume there is no pleasing everybody?
Oh, also I have an idea. For people who hold this story in high regard, can you post your other favorite mlp stories?
Other mlp stories I like, hmmmm....
ReplyDeletePast Sins
That cross over with the older ponies-The third Generation
Predators Moon (a crossover with Beast Wars, isn't on Equestria Daily yet)
Other Fallout Equestria stories
There have been plenty of one shot stories I have liked but I can't remember them right off the bat.
@jack
ReplyDeleteEh, mine are really all over the place. I love "It's Always Sunny in Fillydelphia", and of course if you haven't read "Sunny Skies All Day Long", you have to.
If you're a fan of the Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher, psychicscubadiver's Dresden Fillies series -- Strange Friends, then False Masks -- has had him accused of being Jim Butcher in disguise. (Even if you haven't read Dresden, the stories explain themselves such that you can pick up on what's going on.) Full disclosure, those stories are edited by yours truly. ^_^
I've also really enjoyed Municipal Engines' alt-u story "Night's Favoured Child", though his progress has slowed to a crawl recently. And it's currently the top-rated story on FimFiction, so that should tell you something.
"Those Blue Wings", by Tchernobog, is a well-known and well-written Appledash fic.
I put Conner Cogwork's "On a Cross and Arrow" and "The Ballad of Twilight Sparkle" by Gravekeeper in kind of the same bucket. They're just fun, shippy romps, if you like that sort of thing. Unfortunately Ballad isn't quite done yet and it's been a long time since he updated, and Conner's sequel "On a Whisper of Wind" is in the same boat.
Past Sins was... fine, and I have no disagreement with Nyx, but I think it could have used some more work on the front end to lay out a stronger story arc. It was nice, but not one of my favorites.
Finally, "It's a Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door" by Jetfire is a great Lord of the Rings-esque adventure beyond the borders of Equestria.
@jack
ReplyDeleteYou suppose?
Do you like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic? And have you ever noticed that not everybody else in the world likes it, and that there are even some who ridicule those of us who do? Then you don't need me to tell you that different people like different things.
There is no pleasing everybody. That's not an assumption, but a fact of human psychology. The more people like something, the more some people will be adverse to liking that same thing just because it is popular.
As for posting other MLP favorites: there are many thousands fans of Fallout: Equestria and only about a dozen people who still watch this thread. I'm afraid the sampling of story recommendations which you will receive here will not provide you with a means of categorizing the type of person who loves Fallout: Equestria.
@Pugs314159
ReplyDeleteWow! Thank you. I'm very honored! ^.^
A little something to share, with thanks to my friends at the ask Littlepip tumblr:

@Kkat
ReplyDeleteWould you like to share your favorite mlp stories?
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about that one too, if it's not too much bother. Last I remember hearing you were gathering a great big list for when you were finished writing and had time to read other people's work...
To Kkat, or, rather, just to whomever will read this comment: This is one of the best stories that I have ever read. It's been nigh on a year since I had finished reading it, and I am contemplating as to whether or not I should read it again. I have not yet read any other spinoff (namely the Project Horizons one), and am only just now starting up reading again, as after I had finished this work, I had stopped reading altogether. Long sentences and non-clear audiences aside, I would just like to say that I will enjoy getting back into reading again, and that this work of art (yes, art) will forever hold a place in my favorites, if not at the very top of it.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I forgot most of the story, and caught myself today wondering what the main character's name was (LittlePip, was it?). Here we go! Off into the realm of words and long nights with mugs full of liquids of the warmest kind we go! Onwards!~
...
Or maybe I'll dig into the comments here a bit. And I thought I had a nice little constant group discussion going on in an old post...
And then I subscribed by email to the comments of this post. Cheers, mates, I'm here to stay... (*gulp*)
ReplyDelete@Sindri
ReplyDeleteBetween work and other projects and activities, I have hardly had any time to read. The number of stories that I have read is so small that I do not feel comfortable listing "favorites". There are far too many great stories out there that I haven't had the chance to read.

@Kkat Sorry, but I do not think that I could go that much into the discussions and whatnots. I already have one ongoing brony chat, and that is well enough for me! Thank you though, I shall look into that!
ReplyDeleteA few days late, but a happy 1 year anniversary to finishing FO:E to you, Kkat. I love that comparison between the first fifteen minutes of The Hobbit and the first seven chapters, by the way.
ReplyDeleteI just finished chapter 16, so I thought I'd share a few thoughts that crossed by while reading:
When the party encounters the Bloodwings at the monorail while heading to Tenpony Tower, I thought of Steelhooves' death being quite similar to the death of a character, Axel, in the Walking Dead comic series, being similarly sudden and in a battle with a significant foe. Probably means little to most who would read this comment, but I thought I'd share anyway.
Calamity's accent seems a little exaggerated in that chapter, as in, more prevalent than I remember. From scrolling through chapters 14 and 15, it seems more or less the same in 15 and significantly lower in 14. Just a nitpick.
The introduction of the SPP towers was quite interesting, to say the least. More useful than simply getting news, I'd say.
Finally, I think I've associated this story with the taste of peanut butter.
@ketchup504
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for that. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts as you read.
^.^
Just did 17 as well, I'll attempt to give an outline of sorts from now on.
ReplyDeleteAside from wondering what 200 year old watermelon would taste like:
Why was Monterey near Stable Two in the first place?
The further description of the interior of Tenpony Tower reminds me of something in Project Horizons. All I can say without some sort of spoiler. Same with the little Rarity recording.
Mention of Dr. Helpinghoof made me think about the ghoul doctor other readers have talked about, but I seem to have no memory of.
The blue pony that was being chased by the rapists was given healing potions by Calamity? It isn't mentioned in that chapter.
Wouldn't there be virtually none, if any, food in those trash bins? And, why would they just be doing that now? Unless the area had seen use by ponies who actually used the containers for waste.
Bridge created by falling debris? Reminds me of The Statesman Hotel in Fallout 3.
I like what was done with the statuettes and the story behind them.
This would be the first time I've noted that Littlepip acts meaner when undergoing withdrawal of the PTMs. Like what she says to Velvet. Unusual for her. And when she takes another, she starts to talk more normally to Velvet.
I was never sure of the size of bloodwings, but since Calamity can place two shots into the head of one with a battle saddle, they'd be pretty large. They also have the mass to shift the makeshift bridge.
Quite the twist with the manticores collecting prisoners. And here is the ghoul doctor.
The brown pony reminded me of Vault 87's ventures with FEV.
Interesting information about Scootaloo's experiments and motives. I can hardly believe I've forgotten this much of the story.
The encounter with the ghoul doctor went better than expected. Though, it is quite possible he was on to something with the manticores and curing taint.
Most. Subtle. Looting. Ever. I wonder if the safe could have created some spall from the explosions, possibly damaging the contents.
Well, this turned into more of an as-read review than I expected.
I cried. Holy crap, how much i cried. This stuff's heavy... like... Hunger Games-Harry Potter mashup heavy... Oh my sweet loving Celestia this was beautiful...
ReplyDeleteSingle best thing I have ever read in my entire life, no argument involved.
*Insert gif. of clapping in approval with teary eyes*
Just finished this INCREDIBLE story.
ReplyDeleteIt took me a couple months but I pulled it off!
One of the best pieces of literature I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
Thank you Kkat for this fantastic tale.

ReplyDeleteThis is my third read through the story and the ending to chapter 37 still blows my mind. Literally. My brain explodes, blasting a hole in the side of my head. Blood and pieces of goo splatter against the window to my side, slowly slugging their way down and coalescing into a puddle of red, pink, and white.
ReplyDeleteThank you. It's wonderful to hear from people who have enjoyed and/or been moved by the story. Each comment brightens my week.
ReplyDeleteI really do love you all.

Hey Kkat, I made a toy of Dash in her enclave armor and was just wondering how close or far off I was from how you imagine her armor being....also if you think it's cool looking.

If you don't click random links or something like that, that's fine. Thanks
I've started rereading this story again.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, and I don't quite remember why, I printed out the first three chapters. They've been in my desk collecting dust, so I finally just brushed it off and started reading.
I've been keeping a cheap pen next to me as I read, and since it's good practice, I've been underlining spots that have grammatical errors/typos, as I remember encountering a few on my first and only read-through.
I have about five or six pen marks for the thirty, forty-some pages that I have printed out.
Don't take it personally, anyone, it's just a matter of habit. Every time I read anything physical (that I can mark in), I leave correction marks. Sometimes, I don't have to. It's just something that I do.
I always enjoy coming back to this comment board. I'm on my fourth read about half way through and every time I take so much from it.
ReplyDeleteThat being said is there A: a way that I can give back to Kkat for creating Fo:E? (I'm eternally broke but if the option to donate exists I'd like to know for when I'm a little better off.)
And B: Is there a way to get on a mailing list or something to be notified the next time Kkat releases a written work? I keep coming back here but I'm worried that I'll miss something or that Kkat won't publicly announce that she has published something.
Much love.

ReplyDelete@WaffleSmart
ReplyDelete"Horn magic shotguns"? "Graphic rape and sex scenes"? Did these guys do their research on 4chan?
If they wanted to show odd or awful writing, they should have chosen a quote that was actually bad (God knows there are some). Likewise, wouldn't it have been far more effective to link "five-volume collection" to an actual picture of the five volume hardcover? Such pictures are hardly difficult to find.
I know the article is humorous, but it was also just terribly lazy on Eric's and Dustin's part.
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteI actually saw the article before and immediately thought that they simply didn't do any research.
Both of those points are relevant(though badly described) to Project Horizons though, as Blackjack can create a telekinetic projectile with the energy of a shotgun. The second point is a spoiler, though.
It's on Cracked. Ergo, stop caring.
ReplyDelete@silentcarto
ReplyDeleteI'm actually expecting a new wave of readers, and possibly fans, to come out of this.
I hope the end result is for more people (even just one) to dive into the Fallout games or give MLP: FiM a chance. If the story itself should positively impact their lives on a deeper level, that's all the more wonderful.
In light of that last comment, Kkat, I find it amazing how something written over a year ago could still be impacting/have the potential to impact people like this. It's just a true testiment to a job well-done.
ReplyDeleteFunny that should be said. After putting it off for far too long, I finally began playing the original Fallout and am finding it much more enjoyable than I thought I would. I guess part of it is because I thought the UI would be fairly bad (which it mostly isn't). Instead it was just initially confusing.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Fallout before reading this story, but now I'm REALLY into it. The only downside being that I find the worlds of Bethesda games even more disappointing as I can't help but make comparisons...
@Kkat
ReplyDeleteWell, one can hope. I'm sorry I came off so snide there -- it's just that I was fed up with this kind of sensationalist bandwagon shock-reporting before this fandom even started.
@MichaelJAW
Heh, welcome to the best of the franchise. :) If there's one unavoidable structural flaw I see in the Bethesda games, it's that the original games gave you the feeling of islands of civilization separated by vast expanses of desolate waste. By setting the whole game in one relatively urbanized area, Bethesda makes the wasteland seem much more crowded than it really should be. The addons help relieve that a little by taking you to distant and visually distinct locales, but you still don't get the feeling that you, your companion, and those four guys you just killed are the only human life for miles around.
Upon reading chapter 18, I found I had little to say, so here's chapter 19.
ReplyDeleteThe memory orb related to an attack on Applejack and Rainbow calling Flutters a traitor appears to be the first allusion to Fluttershy's sharing of megaspell magitech. There's also the 'accident' involving Applejack, relating to her ministry's corruption. And, the memory extraction operator is fishy.
Then again, everything could be called 'fishy'.
The random loot lampshade. I loved that.
Pip's mother being an alcoholic, and the cutie mark not controlling destiny. Littlepip's destiny has little to do with Pip-Bucks, but hers does help her a lot. Doesn't really apply to her mother, however.
Steelhooves refers to Applejack making him feel like a good pony, though he apparently isn't, and he goes off and murders Grim Star.
Not sure how I feel about that.
Splendid chapter.
this is simply one of the most amazing fan fics i have ever read, this needs to be animated and made into a movie and the author needs to be congratulated in every way possible for his work.
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS SIMPLY ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN NOVELS I HAVE EVER READ! The writer deserves high praise and this should be animated and made into a series i can't sleep without reading at least 3 chapters every night and don't look forward to it being over! I'm not much of a pony fan but i might become one after this! I also need to get fallout three again damnit! Thanks for all your work Kkat!
ReplyDeletereally want to get ahold of whoever is doing the audio novel and chat with them about making it much more in depth with sound effects and mood music ... can anyone help?
ReplyDeleteSo again, if anyone knows how to contact teh person doing the audio novel i would like to help give it more depth with sound effects and music please contact me at [email protected] thanks
ReplyDeletewant to re-iterate my desire to help whoever is recording the audio novel and help make it more in depth, not asking for money, just want to do it because the story is so amazing that i want to bring it to life. please contact me at [email protected] if you need any examples of my work just ask.
ReplyDelete@Kkat hope to help with audio project if i can, here is an example of the audio work i can do http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ra9X6KA7tkI&list=UUa6RgHMOjrR3eM4Hb2nIj3w&index=9 and there is more if necessary. I really want to help make this so much more. Please contact me at [email protected] Thanks
ReplyDeleteThis comment contains brutal honesty:
ReplyDeleteAlright, so truth be told, I am the kind of person that desires to find most authors and hold their heads under a bath tub full of water till the bubbles stop, then drop in a hair drier for good measure. That is how I feel as soon as someone tells me:
"Oh Rofo, you just have to look at this new fan fiction, its absolutely amazing."
Because honestly, most of them aren't, they are nothing short of a one-shot waste of my time, and filled with as much literary prowess as you can stuff in a door knob. I can honestly say, I felt the same way when I was first told about this fan fic. In fact, I refused to read it, I spent four months from when I first heard about it doing anything that didn't involve reading it simply because I was fed up with having to read line after tedious line of garbage.
However, one night, when I was bored out of my skull and had nothing to do short of hanging myself and rubbing one out to break up the monotony of my week, I found myself thinking of Fallout Equestria and laughing inwardly at how crappy it probably was.
Eventually, sheer curiosity got the best of me and I found myself searching for it. After finding this site, I listened to one of the audio recordings, then another....and another....and another.
Before I knew it, I was hooked, waiting with bated breath and nearly shaking in my boots with anticipation to find out what Little Pip would do next and what amazing and incredible adventure she would find herself in.
I can honestly say, that this, is by far, one of THE GREATEST fan fics I have ever read, and that is saying a lot from the countless hours I used to pour into scouring the internet for gems like this. I have fallen so madly in love with this well crafted masterpiece, that I now find myself pushing others I know to read it and actively seeking out other forums related to this story.
Truly, Kkat has created a work of art, and I feel I can safely say that anyone who can read or listen to this entire story, will remember it for the rest of their lives, or at least until Alzheimer's sets in.
@Soarin Wonderbolt
ReplyDelete90% of everything is shit. When it comes to fanfiction, that's unfiltered, unedited, unmoderated, and usually hyped in the wrong direction. But the top percent is amazing.
If you're looking for more fics that are actually good, I'd point you at Project Horizons; it's a side story based on the original Fo:E (yes it's a fanfic of a fanfic but hear me out), with a somewhat more personal focus and what some have called even better writing. It is a shade more complex, so if you liked the grand adventures but not the conspiracies and history it might not be for you... and it's several shades darker and less optimistic, so be warned. Index page for the 54 chapters so far is here, primary external discussion forum is here.
Took me a year... I've finally finished Fallout: Equestria. An Amazing experience, now to read All of Project Horizons and Heroes D:
ReplyDeleteQuite possibly, this is one of the best stories I have ever had the pleasure of reading, if not the greatest fanfic out there. I was absolutely hooked on this story the moment I first few sentences. I was truly captivated by the world you had painted here- one of despair and ruin, of savagery and insanity, yet it still very much had the ideals of My little pony- friendship, love, hope- just hanging in there, in the virtues of those who lived in this world.
ReplyDeleteI really didnt know what to expect here- I had never played a Fallout game at the point, so i think it was a plus for me that i didnt know much about the fallout lore so that the experience would be more captivating for me. This world was dark and horrible and corrupted, and I absolutely loved it. But more than that, i loved how the characters in this world tried to endure and survive, and a few of them even try to make a better future for themselves, no matter how futile it seems.
There were many moments in the story that hit emotionally for me, especially concerning the fates of all the characters i know and love. There were many moments that were simply heartbreaking for me, and although i didn't cry, ill be damned if this story didn't leave a hole in my heart. But that was one of the best points of the story- how it hits you where you least expect it, reading on so you could find out what happened to everyone and the world of Equestria. Even though I knew by that point that everyone was pretty much dead, it was still impactful, learning of all of their fates, and learning about how the world came to that point and what it was like before the last day was a great experience for me.
Most of all, i loved your characters. Every single one of them, no matter how major or minor their role was. Each of their stories could have been some other separate tale and they would still have been a fantastic read.
I loved how the story was written in first person from little Pips point of view, which i saying something since I had read other first person stories before this one and hadn't been quite as impressed. This is an example of a first person story done extremely well. It was made all the better by the way you charectorized Little Pip, quite possibly one of the best fanmade characters in the pony community and perhaps one of the best literary charactors, in my opinion.
Ok, maybe I look like I'm kissing up too much, but really, what else can i say about the story? I loved it. It was fantastic. It is definalty on par with any number of published works out there- better than most actually, and not just because of all the things i said above. I could see that you put a lo of love and effort into this story and it truly shines through throughout. I had mentioned earlier that i had never played Fallout before, and I was more than happy to take the dive into playing Fallout 3 and its expansions, and I am absolutly hooked to the game now-partly thanks to your story, which nbot only captured all the elements from the game but also enhanced the experience of playing it, so that every ruined building I saw, every body and note left behind that told a story, and the vast emptiness of a ruined wasteland, was more impactful on me than any other game i have played.
So thank you Kkat. Thank you for crafting this epic tale. Thank you for inspiring me to write again. Just thank you.
I wish you well on your future journeys into writing.
I dont know who'll read this or if it can post but I got nothing better to do, so here it goes.
ReplyDeleteI finished the story a while ago but I've stated reading again and Ive heard of other spin offs of this story so I've been thinking, I want to take a shot at making a fallout equestria, though I want to keep some of the eliments of the original, but put some other characters and races in, not to mention myself, and since you did such a good job with the main grope I want to keep part of the original story and intergraet it with my oun idea.
So with you permission Kkat, I'd like to try a hand at doing a rewrite with my oun spin to it. please send me a message to discuse this further.
@Dillon Mulcahy
ReplyDeleteNo worries bro, Kkat allows all fanfiction, with the caveat that none of it will be declared canon.
@Dillon Mulcahy
ReplyDeleteAnyone is allowed to create Fallout: Equestria stories so long as...
A) you give me credit for the original,
B) you don't try to make any profit from the story, and
C) so long as it is understood that the story will not be declared canon.
Enjoy writing. ^.^
thank you, it probably wont be as good as your story is, but I'll see want can become of it.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to read it, I'll be getting the chapters on fimfiction.net. my ID is Grayhem1136, so if you want to see what I've got, I'll send you an email.
ReplyDeleteQuestion,
ReplyDeletewhat are the canons I cant use, becoase I've been reaserching and I'm a little confused. the discrptions arn't so clear, and when you say not to declare it canon does that mean your story or the show.
some say that canon is refering to things that have happend in the main story line, I think. or things that are real, and in my idea the change in reality change. i,e, change of dimesion.
Please tell me how to avoid canon.
PS, sorry for asking these questions, I'm an amiture who's been dableing in writing until now.
@Dillon Mulcahy
ReplyDeleteGoogle "canon," bro. You can write anything, but Kkat will never declare your work official.
I'd heard this story mentioned before, on places like /mlp/ on 4chan and a couple video game forums, but it wasn't 'till I read that vaguely horrified-sounding article on Cracked that I knew I had to read it.
ReplyDeleteI came into all this expecting to be mildly amused or slightly disturbed by all of it, being that it was "ponies in Fallout!" and such.
What I didn't expect was to read what was not only the best-written piece of fanfiction I've ever come across, but one of the best pieces of all-around LITERATURE I've ever had the good fortune to encounter.
I've journeyed along with LittlePip, Calamity, Velvet, SteelHooves, Gawd, Xenith--everybody! I've clung to my computer in suspense, hardly wanting to shut it off to go to bed or college or even eat! It was just that gripping.
Just... thank you, Kkat. Thank you for writing one of the best books I've ever read. :3
@Dillon Mulcahy
ReplyDeleteIt's very simple. You can write whatever you want, but it will not be considered canon to Fallout Equestria.
Here's an example. Let's say you write a story about Calamity's past. Suppose someone else writes another story about Calamity's past, and they don't fit together. Neither one is considered "official" or "canon"; both are equally valid.
Well, I just finished reading the story for the second time, over a year after I read it the first time. Even with a few huge spoilers from my memory, it was still the best read that I've ever had.
ReplyDeleteThe emotions, the tone, the messages, not to mention the story itself, it's...it's powerful.
One question: around roughly the middle of Chapter 31, Velvet asks Xenith how she was hearing sounds which caused hellhounds to go crazy. It ended with "it seemed so obvious that..." and then abruptly cuts to the next section of the chapter.
I think I'm missing something here, it seemed so obvious that what? It's been bugging me ever since I couldn't figure it out, and I finally brought myself to asking. So, if anybody, Kkat or not, would care to explain, will you please? Thank you..
Regarding the whole canon/official thing: while I haven't read any side stories (yet [maybe]), and understand the need for the absolute policy of not accepting anything as canon, I couldn't help but think of the "New Kkat-approved side story! A Mare Worth Fighting For!" By Kkat-approved (or author-approved; can't exactly remember, but I'm fairly certain that it's the latter), does this mean that it's canon, or simply just approved as a spinoff/alternate thing?
@Bombedrumbum
ReplyDeleteIt seemed obvious that.... zebras are immune to pony telepathy. That was one of the key thoughts that had to be excised in Lifebloom's purge of anything to do with the planning for Maripony.
If you remember, when the group met the Goddess for the first time, Xenith had been reading the nascent Goddess's lips on the monitor, and she continued to do so when they met the Goddess in person. She was surprised when Velvet indicated that they didn't need her translating and asked if they could all read lips, too, not realizing there was a telepathic broadcast going on.
@Silentcarto
ReplyDeleteAh, thank you. Now it seems so obvious indeed, heh. I just didn't get the sounds.
thank you.
ReplyDeleteBest piece of fiction ever.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I am now 20% more likely to burst into tears at the mention of Rainbows and Sunshine.
Just spent the last week (ish) reading through the entirety of this story just to find out how it ended.
ReplyDeleteI think the thing that hit me hardest was Littlepip's fate. I mean sure, she gets to meet Homage once a year, but I hoped she'd get to live in the wasteland she helped to save. Not only that, but, looking through everything, it was unavoidable. There was no other choice, no other way. It was the inevitability of it that really hit hard. So now, I'm kind of depressed
The only character that made me cry a single tear for was Steelhooves. I mean he spends 200 years fighting through the horrors of the wasteland without any close friends and when he finally let some into his heart and started to realise how to best honor Applejack's memory and come to terms with everything he had done and had set himself on the path of salvation he dies. Not only that but to have the sun finally burst through the clouds for the first time in 200 years (I'm assuming) just mere hours after his death made it worse for me. He had to endure the horrors of this land for 200 years and he if just held on for one more day he could have finally seen true natural sunlight. The fact that he is the only main protagonist to die also pained me, I knew it would be inevitable for at least one of them to die but I didn't expect it to hit in such a sucker punch way. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that while I feel sorrow for the fates of some of the other characters like Littlepip, Steelhooves death will hold a special place in my heart for a good while.
ReplyDelete@Fallin' Winter
ReplyDeleteI agree completely, I know the conflict is mostly over but I really want to know more. I want to know who all the elements are and if lilpip ever gets a happy ending with homage. Just.goosebumps. This has most definitely confirmed my brony status to the max. my life is about 20% cooler now
I completely fell behind this story. By the time I was aware it existed, it was already insanely long, and I just couldn't find it in myself to read any type of fanfiction THAT long.
ReplyDeleteI finally decided to give this story a try, and I must say, I was completely blown away.
I've never played the Fallout games, and even after reading this, I almost don't want to. I could tell which elements were likely referencing the game, and I highly doubt the game is anywhere near as rich in it's story.
So, onto the big points.
First, I love post-apocalyptic settings, because of the rich emotional content that often accompanies them. This was completely evident right at the start, but driven home even more so by the halfway point, where all her friends come into play, and thus the emotional content is ramped up to a much higher level. The world hasn't changed, but now there are characters you care for, making each smile, laugh, hug, or self-reflection that much more powerful, because you know how volatile the world is, and it's an amazing feat.
There really are no words to describe how good this story is, because reading this isn't reading a story. It's experiencing the world first hand. I can often get lost with multiple settings and places, but this story painted the entire world, literally seeing the entire setting like standing on one of the towers, a clarity often lost with even highly published books, and almost never in fanfiction.
I've often had dreams with a post-apocalyptic twist, usually revolving around me and a small group of friends fighting to survive in a hostile world. This story didn't just blow me away, it was as if I was really there with them, experiencing the same thing as intensely and emotionally driven as my dreams, leaving me with a gaping hole in my heart, like awaking from an emotionally jarring dream and feeling out of it the rest of the day, only this time, lasting much longer, because I can't focus on anything else. The story is both a blessing, and a curse to me, leaving an emotional hole that I have no idea how to repair.
Or perhaps these emotions are a saddening realization that this will remain a story. There will be no motion picture, no game to experience it first hand, and a highly unlikelihood of even being tackled by the animators in the fandom, due to the length and deepness to the story.
@Navy Brony
ReplyDeleteFor what it is worth, a good group of bronies on the Fallout Equestria Resource site are crafting and playtesting a Fallout: Equestria tabletop roleplaying game.
dear kkat i love your work and i have two question.are you working on another story?(you dont have to if you dont want too.)and how many time the fallout equestria story has been visited, how many views?
ReplyDeleteI just have to say......This is the best fanfic I have ever read. No one will believe me when I say I have just read the entire thing in 3 days. I had no life but this story for those days. So much so that ah'm beginning to sound like calamity in my own head! Ya ah'm a little weird. -.- . Anyways I'm in awe as to the amount of work thought required to craft this so just to say thanks to the author kkat and can someone link me more work by him? Just incredible.
ReplyDelete@Hanley209_Brony
ReplyDeleteSorry to say. But this is the only work Khat has done.
On the bright-side. There are other high quality fan-fics by other authors set in the FO:E universe.
Namely
Project Horizons which is still in progress:http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/08/fallout-equestria-project-horizons.html
Murkey Number Seven, also still in progress: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NgCmMMuecDRzbX05uIsZN1sN5HdHNNPQa68QCPDGvdo/edit
And Pink Eyes http://www.fimfiction.net/story/931/fallout-equestria-pink-eyes
Happy Reading!
(@Kkat) If you ever write anything else let me know. This story is the greatest Fanfic ever, hell it's one of my favorite stories of all time. The only thing that bothered me was the 10 years after chapter with Fluttershy. I like Fluttershy, but I would have preferred a chapter with Lilttlepip and her friends at Homages birthday party. That in my opinion would have made the story less painful. Also, what in the hell happened to Rainbowdash? Did she die or what? I was actuality holding out hope that she was still alive. You even hinted that she was, but you never confirmed it at all. Was that your intention?
ReplyDelete@Kain Nomad
ReplyDeleteI believe that the official answer regarding Rainbow Dash is that not all mysteries need to be, will be, or should be solved. We know she went into Canterlot to deliver things at Pinkie's instructions, we know she encountered Gilda shortly after that while exhausted and out of healing potions. Then the recording ends. She might be dead, she might have escaped or even won that fight, Gilda might have had a change of heart; the answer is lost to history.

Well, since nobody else has seemed to have mentioned it, I guess that I will.
ReplyDeleteAmazon seems to be entertaining the idea of selling fanfiction. I'll get to the point- if a fanfiction like this won't make it, then I don't know what would be considered.
And now for the counter. Perhaps Amazon won't be interested in it, maybe because it's available for free elsewhere, or that it is fanfiction of copyrighted material made without the original owners' permission and consent. It's fanfiction, plain and simple. Quite frankly, I don't get how Amazon will be able to sell fanfiction of copyrighted material.
The've said that they've secured rights for some shows already, them being from Warner Brothers. If they want to expand the fanfiction, then they will have to tackle other companies. The probability of them negotiating out a deal with Hasbro is probably slim, not to mention that it's also using a video game as a crossover (Fallout), so there's also that to deal with.
I just thought that I would say that, because if there's a fanfiction out there that would be worth paying money for, it's this one. It's got a great story, it certainly would give consumers quite a bit to chew through, and people would be getting (literally) the most for their money what with the length.
Oh, and regarding the above discussions, the author Kkat has intentionally left it as a mystery. She has decided that it be so, so there is no definitive answer as to what exactly happened.
As much as I myself don't like it, Kkat has not written anything else that is shared with others. I'm fairly certain that there's some other things that she's written, but I'm pretty sure that not only are they private, but they're also probably not full-length stories either. I mean, I remember her once being quoted as saying that after leaving college, this is the first story that she has completed really, and with the amount of time and effort put into it, I can understand why she would not wish to go through it all again. God bless, Kkat. I hope that you're doing well in whatever or wherever.
@Bombedrumbum
ReplyDeleteMy understanding is that crossovers will never be allowed on Kindle Worlds. The system basically works by Amazon buying the rights to fanfic within a fictional universe, so they can pay people to write within that universe; if a story includes multiple IPs then it all breaks down even if they have rights to both.
And honestly, I think it's kind of unlikely that Hasbro will ever join in. If they get part of the royalties for a story, it looks like they're approving of it in some way even if they never call it canon. That's fine for an IP like the Vampire Diaries or whatever, but a big part of MLP's value is how it's seen as a healthy, wholesome thing for little girls. And yes, there's supposed to be somebody filtering out the porn and gorn before any of it gets published, but there's no way that's going to be 100% and Hasbro isn't likely to trust something so important to somebody outside the company, when a single error and a poorly placed reporter could make it look to all the world like a manufacturer of children's toys is selling pornography.
one of if not the closeest thing to a perfect fanfiction as you can get, i have to say the end got to me i have had for a good year now an image of a human littlepip in the chamber before reading this (becase i thought it was fallout) and after i read the last chapter i was already near crying but then i saw it and (finnaly) put two and two together and just broke down
ReplyDeleteYou know, I wonder if when Kkat decided to start this little MLP/fallout crossover fic all those years ago she was aware it would essentially become the most famous piece of fanfiction in the entire brony community and quite possibly the most renowned and extremely highly praised fanfiction of all time, spawning thousands of side stories and fanworks on a level so immense it's not even a small fandom within a fandom but an entire fandom on it's own.
