Man, that spongebob reference was far more darker with poor trixie, it grows back right?...

Right?!

Also, was that sort of a Spongebob reference on the Trixie comic?

Nice spongebob reference with that 2nd one. Whats with the spongebob references today?

Octavia said...

The screams, laughter and shouting of when Derpy is shown again in a big way will be heard from other solar systems. ;)

Awww, that first comic really warms the heart. And the neck! Hehe. So very sweet and cute. :)

Heh, another Spongebob reference. Nice. :P Ouch though! Poor Trixie. Think I'm the only one that feels bad for Trixie at all in this. :(

Crazy56U said...

Wait, I only heard this in fanfiction, so I've got to ask: doesn't a unicorn die if you SNAP OFF IT'S HORN?

I'm a shark said...

My favorite old show combined with my favorite new show? It's so awesome.

Cameron said...

I found 2nd comic pretty brutal. Do horns have nerves in them? That would be pretty painful :3

Bobbyzero said...

The spongebob references go straight over my head and reminds me that I'm a bit older than most of you guys...how bout some early 90's cartoon references?

Brian Johnson said...

3: SEVERE PAIN! I would guess it's like breaking a bone.

I spent 5 minutes hitting myself in the head trying to remember where I saw that 2nd comic reference.
I guess i should have read the comments before..

And then when Trixie passed away, her detached horn somehow managed to trap her soul into it, and then for magical reasons unknown she became the John Defoe of the FiM series.

I know it's from Spongebob but my brain is failing at remember what episode it's referencing. Anyone care to fill me in?

Dusty the Royal Janitor said...

DAWWWWWWWWW

Heh... in my personal headcanon... Trixie just got like ten times stronger.

Brian Johnson said...

@Steve Jobs Posting posthumously, I presume you'd be the pony who could do that.
But no, even Trixie does not deserve that. Redirect that to one who does; Gilda.

Dusty the Royal Janitor said...

@Aranarth

Don't remember the name, but it's the one with Kevin the Sea Cucumber and the Jellyfish King

CTOONfan1 said...

I've noticed quite a few Sopngebob jokes, recently. What's up with that?

s said...

@Doctor Valor *spit takes* But then... Does that mean Twilight is Trilby? Who's Theo DaCabe? CABADATH? Certainly not Blueblood? Also Somerset? And Barry? Siobhan?

Pegasus Rescue Brigade said...

Man, every now and then I kind of wish Trixie would have some comic that doesn't end horribly for her.

Still funny though.

s said...

@Steve Jobs I'm confused. Does this count as a conversion or not?

s said...

@Brian Johnson Gilda deserves to get her horn snapped off.

*leers eyes and eats popcorn*

Harwick said...

I'm not all that big a follower of the whole fanon side to Derpy, but that first comic was really sweet. Nicely done!

I must have missed that Spongebob episode, so the second one was borderline horrifying. But I'm sure that'll grow right back.

joetraincool said...

I know what the second comic is referencing, but this is still disturbing. I mean, that's just brutal. Love the first one, though.

Any and all Ditzy/Dinky stuff will be awesome no matter what (well, within certain limits, but I won't be the one to place those, so stick with happy/comedy or maybe sad. Sad works sometimes. So I guess I have kinda set the limits. Hmm...).

Steve Jobs said...

@Brian Johnson
Ah yes, Gilda. I have forgotten about that rude little twerp.
My mistake.

s said...

Aww, don't be such a baby. Horns grow back.

*whispers to Spike* No zhey don't.

(Surprised that nopony made that joke yet.)

Rickyf said...

Am i the only one here who doesn't care about Luna?

Steve Jobs said...

@Rickyf
I don't have a favourite pony.
If I did, however, Luna would be at the very bottom.

s said...

@Rickyf We meet again, unrelated question.

Also, pretty sure. Sure, she's hyped up, but she's still Celestia's sister, right?

s said...

@Steve Jobs But.... Why? *takes hat off and pouts*

Pyrobug said...

Heroic Derpy is heroic.

Steve Jobs said...

@s
It's a matter of taste. I simply can't choose. Luna, on the other hand, well, I haven't actually seen her personality. It would be rude to pick a favourite when a character still hasn't come out of their shadow.

Display Name said...

@Crazy56U

I'd say not unless they were removed right where they connected to the skull, because that would likely cause extreme cranial damage as well.

Otherwise it's just hideous, agonizing pain.

Ragneki5880 said...

I'm impressed by the first comic. Really detailed and dawww.

s said...

@Steve Jobs Tgen why put her on a list altogether? Wouldn't it be just as rude to put her on the opposite side of the spectrum just because you can't put her on one?

Also, you said 'shadow'. Ha ha ha ha, funny.

kriss1989 said...

As has been pointed out, why all the Spongebob? Seriously, 'mayonnaise is not an instrument', 'wormy', and now 'Larry'. And I'm sure I missed some.

#2 Does this make Twilight a Bicorn now?

1LTdaniels said...

The second think I thought, after seeing the picture of the first comic (and before reading it) was:

“Celestia damn you Sergeant Sprinkles, get out of my head”

But in the end it was really sweet.

#2 was OH GOD SERIOUSLY WHAT THE FUCK?!

Specter Von Baren said...

That second one was just... cruel, to me. In the Spongebob cartoon it was funny because the thing the cucumber had was kind of useless and funny looking, but this is... kind of like cutting someone's hands off...

KTS said...

1.AWWWWWWWWW

2. seemed cruel to me.

Dusty the Royal Janitor said...

Guys, guys, calm down about number two. All you need is a proper headcanon to deal with it. Here. you can share my headcanon if you need to:

- A Unicorn's horn is something like a safety. If a Unicorn's horn is broken, they can still cast magic, but the effects are far more volatile and possibly threatening. If you were to cast a simple fire spell to light a candle with a broken horn, you could accidentally set your whole house on fire with just the tiniest of spells. It takes several months but a horn will eventually grow back if it is lost.

SgtGarand said...

#1 I D'awwwed :)

#2 Trixabuse? I understand the joke, but thinking about it makes me cringe. I'm sure it must be painful. But, I wouldn't give snips and snails credit for having the.....hmm..mental capacities for that level of retribution.

Bryan said...

Wow, mood whiplash. The first comic was sweet and heartwarming, the second comic was brutal. And that's the second de-horning I've seen on Equestria Daily just this evening, to boot.

Horns can recover from damage to the keratinous outer layer but inside they're living bone. Chopping off a unicorn's horn is like chopping off a pegasus' wings or an earth pony's legs, I'm afraid I just can't laugh at it (well, aside from the story "the Mane Cast-Offs." That one was hilarious).

Stargazer said...

That first one I saw earlier... I absolutely love the artistic style they used ( although derpy looks completely different with it lol )

Unknown said...

#2. (!) I had to pause a moment to keep my lunch down. But, seriously! That's a mite brutal, neigh, cruel thing to do to anypony.

Sumo Unicorn said...

Okay, to me, THe second one means nothing and I think everybody else is overreacting.

I'll tell you why.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYLrmySl2zI Episoed 20: Green isn't your color. Only 46 seconds in.

Anyone notice what Lotus is doing?

She's Filing Rarity's horn.

This suggests that horns are something like fingernails or at the very MOST like Rodents' teeth. A Unicorn's horn probably keeps growing perpetually and unless it's controlled, it will just keep on growing until a fair amount snaps off on its own. Perhaps it will corkscrew or twist around like fingernails do or it will cause a unicorn's head to unbalance. I dunno.

The fact of the matter is, though, they wouldn't have to file a Unicorn's horn if it didn't keep growing forever.

Now it's obvious that they didn't rip out Trixie's horn all the way to the roots. And it's obvious that they didn't dig into Trixie's skull to get at whatever the "source" of her magic was. She still has a stump there after all. My guess is that this is like when somebody seriously bruises a fingernail or a toenail and a fair portion of it comes off fairly far down close to the cuticle. It's gonna hurt a fair bit for several months but it's not gone for good. It'll grow back. It'll probably seriously ache if she tries to use magic, though... like if something pressed down on a nail-less fingertip.

PonyPonyPonyBrony said...

Holy crap, the Derpy comic is just f*cking adorable!

Bryan said...

@Sumo Unicorn

As I mentioned, horns have a keratinous outer layer (which actually is the same material as fingernails) and they can handle that layer getting scuffed. Filing and buffing the surface would be akin to a manicure. Cutting it off at the base, on the other hand, would be more akin to chopping off the finger.

I understand that the artist didn't intend for that to be a horrifying depiction of a grievous mutilation. It was just meant to be a gag. But I tend not to appreciate that sort of humor when the subject is shown weeping in pain afterward, so the gag fell flat for me.

Sumo Unicorn said...

@Bryan

I can understand where this sort of thinking might come from. After all, dinosaur fossils still have their horns, right? Their horns were made of bone.

But there are several things that suggest against it. For one, Rhinoceros horns are made of hair. Furthermore, deer and moose antlers... Dunno what they're made of but they come off every season, and these animals are rather anatomically close to Equine.

On top of that, when it comes to the weeping. I wept when my foot got stepped on by a horse when I was helping out at a friend's farm. And I was in a lot of pain when the nail turned purple and eventually fell damn right off. (so you can see where I get this idea from)

Honestly, since Lauren Faust and the pony crew have never released a skeleton of the ponies (at least as far as I know they haven't) we can't be entirely sure exactly what the horns are made of... but this, along with how Twilight's horn reacted to the Poison Joke in Episode 9 (seriously. Bone doesn't "flop," and poison joke or not, I think if there was bone in there she'd be screaming in pain) suggest to me that they are most certainly made of something OTHER than bone.

1. D'awwww!

2. For something played off as light, that's pretty dark.

Oh my goodness, that Derpy comic was so incredibly beautiful! The art style was lovely and reminded me of a sweet children's picture book or something, and the 'story' itself heart-warming. Wonderful mother Derpy must certainly be best Derpy. <3

And as for the second comic, ow! Poor sad Trixie comic is definitely sad! =(

#2 Can't laugh at it.

While I can laugh at an episode of worlds dumbest, I can never laugh at comedy that goes past the getting hurt part into the suffering part. Trixie is crying way too much for me to laugh at it.

jodyjm13 said...

I love the first comic, as well as the pic shown for it (source for that pic: http://fav.me/d4c3ezj (same artist)). The comic is very well drawn (the storybook style, as WhiteDiamonds so aptly put it, works wonderfully for this mother/daughter vignette), and I love seeing Dinky as a resourceful, slightly-precocious filly. As for the pic at the top of this post, well, there's just something about that wall-eyed determination that's both amusing and inspiring, and knowing the story behind the scarf just adds a heart-warming element to it. Now that we know that Luna's finally getting some attention, the one thing I hope for most in the show is some hint of this Derpy/Dinky fanon relationship.

And then this second comic... yeah. All we really know from the show, as pointed out by Sumo Unicorn, is that horns can be filed and can turn floppy and splotchy under the influence of the poison joke plant. This suggests that the damage isn't permanent. However, Trixie's reaction, as well as Twilight's in the fifth panel, does indicate it's very painful. It also seems likely that losing (almost all of) her horn would affect Trixie's ability to cast spells. Judging from the artist's other comics, I don't think he intended for the damage to be permanent or excessively painful, but it's still a bit more cruel than I really like.

Then again, maybe we're all just overreacting to Yet Another Spongebob Reference. (And I'm saying this to stop myself from discussing how Snips and Snails could break it off so easily, or why Twilight seems so blasé about the matter in the sixth panel, or askin where the idea that a unicorn's horn was "an erogenous zone" came from...)

Snips and Snails seem to be right in the middle of it all, too.
