Not a huge fan of this new method. I understand things are busy on the front page with Season 2 starting up, but it's way too easy to overlook fics when they're tossed into compilation posts like this.

To clarify that last: there's a lot of information missing in the post. We don't see tags, additional tags, star-ratings, pre-reader comments, etc. All we see is the picture and the author's description. We barely even get the title.

I agree with this. All that missing information is a big problem.
I think this update method for fanfics works nicely as a compromise to keep from spamming the front page too much while still getting more updates out.
Though I agree with at least one thing said last time - I think it would still benefit from having the fic name listed above the picture as well as on the link below the description.

There's barely any information about the stories as Cold in Gardez said, and its kind of a shock to suddenly have four stories that I follow all dumped in my lap at once. At least do them twice a day or something to spread them out more.

If update spam is causing an issue, then increase the word count requirement. People don't need to be updating stories with 2500 word chapters when Kkat is doing single chapters with 50,000 words.
(Kkat is unusual, though.)
I fully agree with the "title above the picture" thing, though. It's ridiculous that we see the picture, read the tags, read the description, and only then get to see what the story is named.

The Nigtly Roundups turned out to be a good decision (even though they became morning round ups). Hopefully, these Update Roundups can be just as useful. hey that just gave me an Idea!
Suguesstion: Call them Update Roundups.
I think it would be best to have the following in these posts for each story:
- Name at the top
- Current Star Rating
- Characters
- Additional Tags (Optional)
So, basically like the old way, but multiple stories in one post. That way, readers can pick and choose at their leisure with the same amount of information afforded to a new, or complete, story.
Eh. I kinda like this version. It makes it easy to see all the updates in one place rather than periodically throughout the day. I also like that completed and new fics get their own main post.

And if this really is going to be the new method of story updating (which, as I've said before, I disagree vehemently with) I support all the formatting changes except for star ratings. Once a story gets to five-star territory, the difference between 4.5 and 4.9 is almost always subject matter rather than writing skill. I've seen mediocre stories get six stars, and absolutely brilliant stories languish at 4.5 because they took a risk with plot or tone. They're the most relative things on this blog, and I'd much rather not have them included here.

Fanfictions DO disappear beneath updates and whatnot, and it can be frustrating, but I prefer the old method better. If only for the sole reason that I read 'this format is better' and scrolled down to see that I've missed three chapters of 'Wooly Fetlocks and the Fashion Factory'.
However, I guess it's for the better. This is just a Story Update, but with multiple stories, formatted in much the same way as an ordinary post. The only bothersome part is waiting for such a long time after whatever work I have finished before I can discover what fics have been updated.

He did. He somehow wrote, edited and published a 50,000 word chapter in the space of 10 days. It was a damn good chapter, and even though I'm a professional writer I couldn't spot any mistakes in it.
It's certainly possible -- 5k words a day isn't insane. Doing 5k words a day, for 10 days in a row, and getting it polished enough to publish is just amazing, however.
With regard to star ratings, I think they're generally useful in splitting out the "good but missing something" 4-stars from the "all-around good" 5-stars. 6-star seems to be fairly random.

I'll reiterate what I mentioned in another one of these, I'm not a fan of this method at all. I feel it:
1. Shortchanges the author/story's chance to shine
2. Doesn't convey the information as well
3. It's nice having new stories pop up throughout the day for nice little bursts of reading rather than getting slammed all at once with numerous intriguing stories.
It's not supposed to replace the story post, only link to them with a brief bit of information for those following. Some of these have been on the front page 8+ times now, it's just a little bit ridiculous. Stories that deserve air time are being spammed by stuff that has already had plenty of chances to shine.

A fair enough point that I admittedly hadn't considered, but two of the stories in this group are only on their second chapter and are going against absolute monsters with large followings like Sunset and Frigid Winds.
Sounds of Equestria in particular I know hadn't been updated for at least a month and a half before it was put in this post, and it was put alongside what is probably a much more well known Octavia/Scratch story to boot.
All you have to do to get most of the stuff in the updates is go to the page, highlight most of the required stuff, copy-pasta, and bam. You have a whole lotta information for the updates, and it isn't a problem until you start forgetting page breaks.
I like this method. It makes the homepage cleaner. However I would recommend that updated stories get their own post in the "Fics" tab, that way people looking for fics can see the stories that they're following as soon as they update.

Kkat has already written a fic longer than the Lord of The Rings trilogy. Unusual is an understatement.
I can appreciate why this is happening, I mean, it has got to be crazy over there at EqDHq, and y'all do amazing stuff as it is... but I'll throw my hat into the corner of this not being the solution. I've said for a long time that there should be a sidebar of some sort, that updates with the stories, and keeps them there for all to see, cycling through with the last ten or fifteen updates... Sadly I have no idea if this would be too complicated, nor do I have any idea how to accomplish this (Dammit Jim, I'm a writer, not a programmer!) If this is overly complex or time consuming feel free to disregard, but to me that seems like the best solution, as it keeps updates from spamming the front page, while handing out pertinent information (que shows rating, tags, etc...), and allowing for a lengthy time in the spotlight. Just my two cents...

If I recall correctly (and it's not guaranteed), they have tried raising the word requirement once already. It got us to where we are today, and I don't think raising it again would have much of an effect (possibly even a detrimental one?)
Really I think that the amount of information provided (aside from the title as a header for each section) is enough that it should still interest someone in a story if they're still seeing it for the first time. And of course it does link to the story's individual page, so it still gets its proper attention there.
Maybe it's just the me that was dieing for an update to Project Horizons while it was stuck in the pilled-up queue last week, but I really think this Update Roundup is a good thing (or at least the start of one)

I honestly think I like this method better; additional tags, comments, and star ratings are still available - you just have to click the story link and look at all of it on the subsequent page.
Honestly, I'd say that consolidating story updates like this makes it harder, if anything, to miss an update to a story you're following, or to miss a new story that you may want to follow. Instead of scrolling through an ocean of fanfiction posts, you've got everything in one place, packaged together nicely - not unlike a can of sardines, minus the nasty salty fish taste.
If nothing else, I think it's a step in the right direction.

Fallout equestria breaks the rule by default, it has always skipped the update queue :p kkat pretty much releases an entire completed multi-part fic per update anyway

For me personally, I don't really mind how the new queue is set up. I'm still amazed that my fic is even on here, let alone having the time spent for someone else to say it has updated.

Alright: This is gonna have more than one suggestion, but here I go.
Don't do this for two reasons:
1) Feedback: The author of a fic wants feedback and gets a majority of it off of its EqD post. Now, the idea of giving complete fics a separate post is good, but still, the author wants that feeling of readers saying "I'm liking where this is going. I wonder what'll happen next." or "Whoa! I didn't expect the end of THAT chapter!" With this, each of their updates will only elicit a response about a more popular fanfic that was released at the same time or about the post image.
2) Star System: This would limit the star system to only the first and last chapter, and since it's archived before completion in most cases, it's limited to the first chapter. With this, the star system is kinda pointless when you originally said it was for stories. (Slightly off-topic rant incoming) You should have it so that the story's rating isn't locked, because a fic could drasrically increase (or decrease) over a couple chapters, and the rating for the first chapter may not be appropriate for the rest of the fic.
So that's my rant. I doubt Seth will actually read this (or anyone for that matter) but judging by most comments, it's gonna be taken out.
As someone who uses the RSS feed to follow the site - the new way of doing the fanfic updates is much appreciated. Updating the old posts didn't send them back into the RSS feed, and it's much easier to keep track of updates now for me.

Well, if this is what it's going to be then, eh...
The stars, titles, and tags have already been mentioned. My question is this, though, is it possible to get the image to hyperlink to the blog article instead of the image's source? If the blog article's image links to the source, then there's nothing lost: people want to get to the stories from these consolidated posts a lot more often than people want to download the images, but the latter group can do that by clicking the image part twice.
I'd also suggest breaking the updates up into two groups: an early afternoon group and a night group. Then, have two update consolidation posts a day. What this does is it spreads out the fics kind of like the old system did (so you're getting 5 at once every 12 hours instead of 10 at once every 24 hours). That way, there's not the overwhelming, "CRAP, 7 OF MY FAVORITE STORIES UPDATED" business for readers, and the stories in each update get slightly more attention than if it were just one big update.
Also, I'd consider having the updated fics in a list at the beginning of the post, before the break. That way, people can just see, "Oh, none I wanted today," or "OH! I LIKE THE THIRD ONE ON THE LIST!" without having to click into the post itself.
Finally, though, I'd push to have the 'fics updated today' list added back to the Nightly Roundups. I've already seen it in my story that this method of updating doesn't give the same amount of viewers as the traditional method (at least ten less readers at the time of the update). Yeah, not a scientific test by any means, but it makes sense: a lot more people see the individual stories when they're posted separately, even if it's only on chapter 3 of 8. Putting the list back in the nightly roundup seems like a good compromise. That way, every story gets to be part of a consolidated list twice, and with a good six to twelve hours in between posts.
I'll clarify a bit on the timing: everything here is done on PST, so I'll use that. Every night between 1:00 and 5:00 PST, the Nightly Roundup goes up. So, I'd probably say to set the fic updates to 11:00 PST and 6:00 PST. Obviously the times are arbitrary and therefore subject to change, but that's the point I'm trying to make.

It sort of becomes a time management thing at that point, this post already takes me an hour a day since every single story has updates/fixes that need to be done before it's created. I can't copy paste star ratings, and labels would have to be de-hyperlinked from the copy paste one at a time. It would take a while.
and you can already click the story name in the posts above to go to their story post, it would take forever to add hyperlinks to every image, and not worth it when clicking the text right below it sends you to the same spot.
Did I screw up on one of these links? It sounds like a lot of you think they link to the chapters themselves, and not the actual story pages.
I know others have already said it, and I think I said it in previous posts, but I REALLY prefer having individual posts. It makes it easier to see labels and stars. I have no problem see a bunch of fanfic posts every day, and those that do have a problem can just click no-fanfiction-mode.
Yeah, I'm really not a fan of this method either. Too freaking cluttered, and having the fic title only at the bottom of the entry for it is incredibly confusing when scrolling down.

If it takes too long for you to do this... find someone you trust to help you with it. I mean, geez, man, it's not exactly like this is a sparse community.
I'm not following about the labels needing to be de-hyperlinked one at a time. Worst case scenario, couldn't you just paste them into a plaintext editor like Notepad or TextEdit (or whatever Macs use).
The links within pictures is... a luxury, I'll admit. But really, the more ways that users have of doing something, the easier it is for them to do something, especially when there is only one task that needs to be accomplished by the layout of the post: linking to the blog post of the story. I'm pretty sure you'd only be replacing the link of the picture with the link of the story, at any rate, but if it takes too long to do for an added bit of usability for the viewers of the website... that's your call.
I'm pretty sure that the star rating thing is a widget that loads from a source, so you should be able to get the widget itself as part of the HTML that forms each post's position.
As it stands, I'm not a fan of the current format. The title definitely needs to be above the picture, not below it.
There's also a lot of space issues of elements running into one another. Perhaps this would be fixed by having a bit of redundancy and more white space, like having the title (that links to the blog post) and then a link saying "Read More..." (that also links to the blog post) at the bottom?
Another idea might be having fixed-size thumbnails of the images, and then having the title / description / tags to the right of it (kind of like the new blogger layout, which is ugly for the main site, but I think it works for a consolidated preview like this).

I would say that FO:E's insane verbosity is it's biggest drawback. Not everyone has the time or patience to sift through 30-plus overly long chapters of post-apocalyptic OCs (Most of whom are either borderline Mary-Sues, walking exposition dispensers, or both) awkwardly re-treading plot points from the Fallout series.
I say it should still be lumped in with the rest of the stories until it finally finishes.
I like these fanfiction update compilation posts. Please continue to do them.

The issue with the update spam is how big is too big? 5 K? is that too much for a short and sweet one-shot, or is that too small for the epics out there?
I prefer this method, it reduces a lot of clutter on the front page. I only start reading a fic when it's started or completed, this way I can quickly scan the post to see if anything I'm following has been updated.
The story titles should be at the top, though. It's confusing how they're reversed from the usual posts.

You should make exceptions for some stories that don't update that often. *cough*Ballad*cough* just saying to give people who may have forgotten a certain fic that it finally updated you know?
It happens when you got like 3-7+ tabs open most being stories old and new. I wouldn't even had noticed that Diamond Tiara FF had updated had I not done a third check on EqD for anything I may have missed.
What about once a FF hits like 5 or 7 updates get tossed into these instead? just a suggestion, I mean I know it's just more work for you =(

I've noticed that pretty early on in my EQD experience and, from what I've seen, the mid-star range (2-4ish) is even more wild. For that reason, I don't even bother looking at the star ratings any more.
So, yeah, please don't include them in these updates.

A couple more things.
-Why is Fallout: Eq special over ANY other fic just because of its size and popularity? Either it should be ALL or NONE (outside the other points of complete and new getting their own page).
One thing I noticed yesterday -- having the update page actually made me FORGET about the ones not on the update. I almost missed that Once Bitten Twice Shy finished, which would have been a really bad thing.
Another, perhaps less personal and more serious problem, is that putting these in this post actually does NOT change the date at the top of the blog post. So if something is updated with part 3 a month after it last was, the date from a month ago still shows.
But perhaps this is all moot -- The Prince Among Paupers just got an update overnight, and it's not complete. So maybe these posts are already going away.

I like this format. It puts it all in one handy place so that way, we don't have to dig through 10+ updates to see if the fic we do read updated. But that's just me.
If the problem is fics updating too often, why not just deal with that directly? Set a limit that a post won't be updated until a week has passed since the last one. That way stories still get their hour of fame, there's less of them to deal with on a daily basis, readers get a whole bunch of story at once, and we stop seeing the same fic on the front page every day.
If you are going to stick with this format despite the negative opinion, the only suggestions I have are repeating that the title needs to be moved up to above either the description or picture, and possibly coloring the (New Chapter X) red, to match the normal posts. Otherwise it's not terrible. Stars and tags should stay on the main post, and would only further clutter these.
Gotta say I really like this format. One problem with the 'fics bump when they update' is that it makes people want to write more and shorter chapters even if the story doesn't need them, and also makes the frontpage messy with the same stories appearing time and time again, quantity over quality.
This new method has ruined my method for following stories via RSS feed by starring the posts.
I like Exuno's idea. Instead of limiting updates by amount of words, just say that big update or small, they have to wait x-days. I can understand some people may not quite like that idea, and in a way it can get annoying because, after all, it's easier to remember what happened with a shorter time between updates, but at the same time it solves the problem of fics being drowned out, it creates less updates as a whole.
It's certainly good for the cases when you have two updates in REALLY short order -- I've actually missed a couple updates because I saw the fic and thought "right I already read the new chapter" but there was another chapter out already (and said can ALSO cause the lack of scrolling down further and missing something).
I doubt Seth (or many of the others here) will read or care for this, but:
This is a brilliant thing to do. And it's working. So you have to click once more to go to the story page. But have you guys thought how much work goes into a site like this? I would bet dollars to donuts that Seth, Cereal, Phoe, Tek, and everyone else behind the scenes that I don't know of are swamped to the point of spending every spare minute on stuff.
Think about it. Just the basics. Reviewing submitted content, writing up posts, finding images, and posting. Checking them over to make sure they link right, are of a good enough quality, so on. Scheduling them. Pushing out an update or two an hour. I don't know about you but I can barely get one post on my blog done in three hours, let alone two in one. And there's other stuff. What about all the stuff that's submitted that we -don't- see? Writing up things like this, copy-pasta-ing, the nightly roundups, reviewing fics. Even with prereaders, assume they get 20 fics a day ranging from 3-10k words. That's 60k to 200k words a -day-, depending, which means every day there's enough writing down to match the smallest or close to the largest Harry Potter novels and each one in between. That's an awful lot. And it all has to be reviewed and read by several people and then decisions made.
Plus there's chat. And let's not forget their real lives. They need to cook. Eat. Clean. Do laundry. Go to school and/or work. Sleep, for Celestia's sake. Deal with family and friends. And still do all of this stuff, and any other things they may enjoy.
This, I'm sure, eases their burden of posting and managing slightly while still getting everyone all they -should- need. Come on guys, let's not be super picky on people who do us the huge benefit of running a site like this.
So Seth, and the rest of the EQD crew, I say good job, and keep it up!
And to the rest of you; simmer down. It's just a change, and there will be more in the future and complaining ain't the way to solve it.
