Q&Neigh, Volume 3

Hey folks, guess what? Seth, Cereal and I talked at each other a lot again, and we remembered to record it for you! That's right, coming at you for a magical third time (which I have been assured is the charm), it's the Q&Neigh podcast! Are you excited? 'Cause I'm excited. I've never been so excited! Except for that one time I --

Er... a-anyway. Tonight's cast features lots of debate, lots of discussion, approximately 18% less talking over each other, and many bad jokes. I've never been prouder of us as a group as I am now. Since Soundcloud got a little bit cranky about us uploading these super long files, we're trying something a little different and hosting it on a private server. How much bandwidth have I been alloted? Let's find out! All links after the break.

Q&Neigh #3  (Warning: this podcast is a free flowing conversation that occasionally touches on mature subjects mild swearing. Viewer discretion is advised)

Regarding emus:

1. Loony Toons: Porky in Wackyland/Dough for the Dodo, is all about Porky chasing the "last" dodo. Check this out in Wikipedia; this cartoon has a strange history.

2. Ron Hull was a comic who usually appeared with an emu puppet. He was very funny.

Bajar said...

its rated TV-Y btw which is the lowest rating possible even lower than G

Streek471 said...

The monster is named Gossamer, and Porky was the one that hunted the Dodo. Looney Tunes FTW.

Razyn said...

Well, guys as far as American ratings go, everything on t.v. is rated. Some premium channals set everything to TV-MA just so they don't have to censor anything, but those are rare, and definitely does not include the Hub.

Friendship is Magic is TV-G, and on top of that, e/i. (Educational/Informative) What that means is, on top of being for anyone, the show is certified for teaching others various things.

(Go ahead and guess what.)

PlaceHolder said...

Question: Did the sidebar use to be on the left side? I honestly cannot remember.

Potate said...

Well Celestia did say that she's never seen a unicorn with that kind of raw abilities. Raw abilities is basically saying that it was the best beginner abilities. So that is implying that there are unicorns that could be just as powerful as Twilight but had to work harder for it.

>Twilight Sparkle's ability: Raw talent or results of studying her arse off?
*Old El Paso Girl mode*: Why not both?

>"Twilight is a badass"
Indeed.

>Asking people to write fics so you can dodge a question

Mattatatta said...

Part Two

>Grimdark discussion
A lot of Grimdark stuff is just like that for the sake of being like that. Most of the time, it's basically an author who sees the ease in taking something so innocent and happy, and beating the living shit out of it.

>>Fluttershy gets a papercut
FUND IT. And I lol'd
>>>OCEAN OF BLOOD, Walking around, etc.
That's GrimLight, more like black humour

Anyway, the good Grimdark stories are where the story isn't living up to the Grimdark tag for the sake of it, or for the sake of being nothing but a cheap fright. It's still full of nightmare fuel, but it has other elements in the story that make it all seem to be perfectly in place, and properly controlled.

>Musical stuff
I think the music numbers in the show are great their own way, they have originality to them, but you can see where they pay homage to the inspiration behind their songs.

I doubt anypony other than the Mane Six shall get dedicated songs. The only time other ponies shall be involved in songs is in stuff such as At The Gala and Winter Wrap Up. The only time I can imagine a side pony, or background pony, having their own part in a song, or their own song entirely, is if an episode goes 'on location' and you get an entire town singing to the Mane Six about what their town is like, welcoming them, etc.

>Rainbow Dash impaling herself on a horn
It's completely WRONG. This isn't Happy Tree Friends. It's rated TV Y by the way, I noted that because it is the same rating as Dora the (fucking) Explorer - I compared the two to show how much better MLP is.

>Marshmallows
Did you know you can put marshmallows in vacuum tubes and make the grow HUGE? Basically, Ponies in Space is perfectly plausible, but they'd be gigantic until the re-entered the atmosphere.

>Octavia and Scratch being room-mates
We have Derpy/Carrot Top, and Lyra/Bon-Bon, anyone up for a sitcom featuring these three pairs?

>Musical instruments and their construction
"String by string, putting it together~"

>"They look leik hurrsus"
Seth doesn't sound like that, he sounds like Micheal Cera!
But seriously, they are pretty much anthropomorphic. They are both inaccurate and accurate whenever they decide to be.

Fluttershy would have a similar shape as Celestia if I had any influence, and be a few hooves shy (excuse pun) of Celestia's height.
Pinkie would be curvy, my head pictures her the same as she is now, only somehow more... cute?
Rarity would try to emulate Celestia's or Luna's body type, only she'd be shorter than Shy
Twilight, being the "Mario Character" of the show (at least in my mind), would have the current body type she has now.
Applejack would be built like a brick outhouse, yet it would be clear that she's still a young mare. Her legs would probably look built up and strong.
Dash. Only one word: Streamlined.

>Blueblood on Poison Joke
No, he'd be DIRTY. He's far too clean. Perhaps he'd be covered in bloodstains, or suffers from a constant nosebleed, earning the name "Blue Bloody"

I thought the idea of Sweetie being slow came from how she acted in Stare Master, not getting things quickly like when Scootaloo and Apple Bloom dressed up as a monster, or when she didn't get that her singing scared the chickens. I agree that people shouldn't look at her as just stupid but I think you're not looking at the right reason for why people think that.

Nämahs said...

Side note, I really like the EqD banner with the text like that. Looks extremely professional, that banner text would fit a Fortune 500 company.

Neon Noble said...

...Did anyone forget the Sweetie Belle quote (that I fall back on every day simply because it's true): "There? Where? What? I don't even know what we're doing!"

Not that Applejack told the CMC where they were going in the first place, but it's viable evidence for her to be a little air-headed. I, personally, just think she's a silly filly.

iastfan112 said...

I'd argue Equestria is a female favored, if not dominant, society. Lead by two female princesses(queens), Sweet Apple Acres does not appear to be run by Big Mac but rather AJ despite her not being the eldest. Notice the servants(chariot pullers, train pullers, Spike) all appear to be male.
The best counter example of male leadership appears to be in the Appleloosa where you have Sheriff Silverstar and Chief Thunderhooves who are incompetent to the point of "war". Perhaps we've seen a skewed viewpoint thus far but until/if they flesh out males in Equestrian society I stand by my earlier examples.

Great podcast, you guys are so natural I'd think you were experienced professionals in broadcasting.

Any red villains? HIM was from Powerpuff Girls, not Courage the Cowardly Dog. Another villain was The Red Guy from the series Cow and Chicken.

Twilight's power being innate talent or the result of hard work? I'm reminded of this saying: "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard", which is evidenced by Trixie who seems to have the same potential as Twilight, cutie mark and all, but is not on the same level of power.

The ponies and princesses physical models? I can't shake the notion that the ponies are somehow still in a prepubescent physical, if not partially emotional, form. It's like all those Christmas movies that portray hundreds-of-years-old elves as having the forms of kids. That would make Celestia the only one with an 'adult' form, and how she is so motherly to 'her little ponies'. With Luna being just barely into puberty, it would explain why she has that slightly gawky frame, and tough times with the whole refusing to lower the moon emotional tantrum thing. Basically, she's a twelve year old sometimes brat who's really a sweet kid who does wrong and gets sent to her room. In the moon. for a thousand years. Without supper.

Octavia said...

I like that you guys mentioned how much it costs, how much work it is and how long it takes to launch a completely new toy. Many Bronies don't seem to understand just how much is put creating them and how much time it can take for such a thing to happen.

I loved the question pertaining to cutie marks and destiny versus free will. That was a great question I've contemplated as well. I agree, I think they're simply guidelines for something that makes you happy in life. Just a career path perhaps. You can still study and become good at other things too. Also, debating about unicorn magic was kinda funny to listen to. That's like debating about witchcraft and trying to define it (which yes, it does exist). It can be hard to really define in such detail.

The Trixie discussion was pretty fun. And oh no, Seth is starting to get bored of Trixie... saw it coming already. lol I liked her just as much too in the beginning, but I've also gotten a little bored of her after a while. But that happens. If she makes another appearance (don't rule that out yet for S2 ;)) she'll have a rekindled presence. Which could make or break her character further.

Fluttershy gets a paper cut... I suddenly have an urge to write a ridiculous fanfic. And I'm not the type to have an urge to write fan fiction much.

And yayy~, you read my comment. :D Also, I was just trolled. lol Aww, no one picked me as their favorite musician pony? But that's alright, I still love you all. :) And you guys are right, it's easier to solo well with a cello. I play the cello irl. But I want to try the double bass myself as well at some point. And they are indeed expensive as well. I have a more advanced model of cello and it was about $2.5k. But you can get student versions for relatively cheap to start out with.

Anyway, rambling as usual from me. lol Another great Q&Neigh session guys. I enjoyed listening to it.

SingForTheMoon said...

The only mark I have any dispute about it not being preordained, is Twilight's "destiny mark". It is CLEARLY a representation of the Elements of Harmony. To take that to the next level, as soon as Celestia saw it, she knew what this pony was meant to be and immediately took Twilight under her wing to properly prepare her for what was to come. It was finding the rest of the elements that took her more time.

That was fun to listen to! I have to admit, I was worried when you guys said you would be talking less about yourselves and more about pony stuff, but you pulled it off nicely!

I can attribute most of that to awesome questions. The destiny vs free-will thing cracked me up as someone who went through religious studies in college. Not something I expected at all when listening.

Shadow Dragon said...

I have to disagree with Cereal. Sweetie Belle is a bit of an air head. She's not stupid by any means, she's just a bit slower than the other two crusaders. Like she didn't know what a mannequin (ponyquin?) was, despite spending time in her sister's workshop. She mixed all the paint colors together and didn't know that's why everything turned turned out brown. In Stare Master, after the other two dressed like a monster, Sweetie just sat and starred at them for a moment before realizing what they were doing. She's definitely not stupid, but she is a bit slow realizing things.

Basharoonskis said...

It took me forever to listen to this, I'm not entirely sure why. I had it open ever since it was released and I've just been pecking away at it.

The point where Seth described his fanfic with Trixie was painful, I paused it out of embarrassment for like 20 minutes in the middle of that it was so hard to listen to. And the Discord musical thing was pretty interesting, I honestly would love that if they pulled it off right and got a great voice actor.

You know one problem I have with Discord in the fandom at the moment is that image people keep using for him in discussions, I mean I know he's not gonna look nearly as badass as the image I have in my head for him so there will be a small tinge of disappointment when he shows up.

As for the Sweetie Belle thing - Cereal, she's dumb. It's been shown multiple times throughout the show that she's more of a ditz than the others, and that's just fine, it's her character, but don't deny it.

I would love an action show about ponies, or a darker take on them or something. I don't know why I enjoy that concept so much, but things like Gilda's character could be so much better with a twist to them. Plus I've always had a thing for insane Pinkie, that's my favorite moment in the show because it shows that not everything is fluffy and nice in this world, not even Pinkie Pie. Now I don't mean mindless violence such as Cupcakes, but say Applejack losing a fight to Diamond Dogs who want to dig on their orchard land, and before they manage to kill her Big Mac jumps in and fends them off, saving AJ - just a quick, simple example but I think you see where I'm going with this.

Anyhow, another great Q&Neigh, please do at least one more before Season 2 rolls around, I do love these ever so much.

Poison Jokes:

CMC: The rear half of their bodies turn invisible. Even if they WERE to get a cutie mark they'd have no way of knowing. Nickname is Cutie Mark Cru(Get it? The back half is cut off! Not sure if I like the nickname).
CMC Alternate: Every time they talk they speak in unison in the yell they typically do when they're excited. Their nickname becomes the Cutie Mark Chorus.
Blueblood: His body turns into/gets coated with a layer of goop, which he constantly tries to wash off with normal soap and water. Nickname is Gooblood.
Blueblood Alternate: Any time information about Blueblood is discussed or he's in the room nobody has any knowledge of him or recognizes him, even if he's talking to them at the time. Nickname is Whoblood.
Cheerilee: She becomes exceptionally rude and mean, taking delight in scaring people. Nickname is Fearilee.
Granny Smith: She becomes incredibly buff and in shape as well as being in perfect health, and is constantly working out. Nickname is Manly Smith.
Big Macintosh: He finds it incredibly hard, once talking, to STOP talking. He'll just babble on and on (similar to Pinkie Pie). Nickname is Big Macintalk.
The Mayor: She becomes indecisive, unable to make any decisions or commit to anything. Nickname is The Mayormaynot.

That's all I got right now. Sorry for the wall of text.

i believe the female term for brony going around is Pegasister

Theta the Sheep said...

I've never heard pegasister... I still think a female brony should be called... a brony. Ta-Da! Everypony wins.

Cereal, Seth and Phoe. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is rated Y for youth. ;-; poor Applejack. All that hard work and you guys forget about her. I personally love Applejack. Although I love everypony, if I was in a life or death situation and I couldn't save everypony, I would save in the following order: 1.Pinkie Pie. She's fun, makes me laugh and even when she seems crazy she's right. I too love to party. 2. Fluttershy. She's just so nice and cute, I needz ta hug her. I too share a love for animals. 3. Applejack. I value her loyalty and hard work. Her down to Equestrian attitude is humbling. 4. Twilight Sparkle. She's smart and kicks major flank. Although her bossiness and short fuse lower her value on this list. 5. Rarity. I can relate to the stress she feels, because I too am an artist. I also dislike snootiness, pompousness and ego. 6. Rainbow Dash. There are the athletes I love having as friends because they stay humble, and then there are the braggers. Unfortunately Rainbow Dash's cute tomboyish boasts and large attitude put her at the bottom of this list. I know it's not a very popular opinion, and yes Rainbow Dash kicks major flank, but that's how I see it. Let me remind you, I still love everypony. Love and tolerance.

I know this is off topic, but does anyone know where I would be able to watch Season 2 online when it comes out? Preferably the day of/day after the episode's release? I don't get Hub and I don't want to pay for another channel that I will only watch 1 or 2 shows on.

Question Time: For the fans, do you think Friendship is Magic has become more of a creative medium and less about the actual show?

Ace2401 said...

still only just listening to this, and the part where they discuss Seth and Trixie is hillarious. I actually did have Seth just travel with Trixie helping with her magic shows for a while as a box, lol. Also the whole Seth/Cereal thing is even more hilarious in retrospect XD

TheEggKing said...

@DJnickbeta I think the creative medium aspect of it has been largely influenced by the fact that we're all just sitting around waiting for Season 2. That's not to say there wouldn't be fanon if Season 2 had already been here, I just think that the bronies and pegasisters are going (essentially) stir-crazy.

Another great Q&Neigh. I really liked the deeper cutie mark question.

And amazingly enough, as soon as it ended, Bach's Fugue in d minor started playing, which was freakin' amazing. You should use it as an outro.

If the villain gets a song it should be like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw0aoVpFCDw

Hey! Finally listened to it! Thanks for answering my question!

Hey everypony. Inspired by "IHaveANameBecause?'s" question for Seth in volume 3, I have to ask each of you: if you were forced to write yourself into a fanfic, would you write yourself as a human or a pony? What category would your story belong in? If you were to ship, who would you be shipping yourself with? Who would you spend most of your time with? Who would you avoid meeting or treat poorly?

In response to the Poison Joke question:
-I'd say that Big Mac would become weak, miniaturized, or a mare. I'm not a fan of rule 63 but in Mac's case, it'd be worth it for the chuckles.
-Luna would be unable to raise the moon.
-I would've said that Celestia would be unable to raise the sun, but since you mentioned it, she'd actually just turn pink like you said.
-Braeburn would become either mute and be unable to ramble as he does or too tired to be as excited as he always is.
-Thunderhooves+Poison Joke=Squeakyhooves...'Nuff said
-Vinyl Scratch and Octavia would be (tone) deaf
-BonBon's voice would sound like the voice of freaking angels.
-Gilda would turn invisible and be ignored by everyone. I originally thought this would happen to Trixie, but I like the idea of her being unaffected better.

Zecora on poison joke would be hilarious

"I just cant seem to rhyme
I used to do it all the day"
a scowl comes over her face
"The words would just come to me
making it as easy as one, two, four"
Huffs around
"I hope this doesnt happen to you
beware the flower that is periwinkle"

Conner Cogwork said...

Awp, missed this. And on top of that, I was mentioned?

Wow. Late Conner is late.

Uhm, thanks anyways for the words, Seth!

Zecora Poison Joke theory:
She is normally a very verbose and well-spoken zebra, but when encountering Poison Joke, which is all around her, she is afflicted with forced rhyming.
