Oh my, I wonder what this could mean? It's from the Season 2 premiere it would seem, so it more likely then not has something to do with Discord. Maybe he steals their colors or something, she looks happy or determined up there so I doubt it's depressed Dash. Ooooh, every day I seem to get more excited for season 2, damn these teasers!
Gasp! I am happy about this. Also the fact that they made it during the season 1 production time seems pretty interesting, I wonder if we'll be able to tell a difference between these and the third episode.

Yeah, I'd say the fact that it actually is a desaturated Rainbow Dash is less interesting than the fact that the Discord two-parter is the two episodes that were produced and unaired during the first season. Was the initial intention to bookend Season One with adventure and plot?

Taking a shot in the dark here, but since the episode description when they first announced the episode said that the Mane Six would have to gather the elements of harmony to stop Discord, it might be safe to assume that gray Dash equals Dash drained of her element of Harmony, stolen by discord or something, since, ya know, they ARE the elements (i hope its not just those necklaces...) so it wouldn't make sense to need to gather them again.
Just a guess. Maybe takes their special talent also? since she's on a cloud to fly? god I can't wait 16 days...

The season premier is fine as 2 part villain episode. But if too many episodes of the season follows the basic cartoon plot where at the start of episode the Discord or some other villain does something evil and then the ponies must solve it, then that will kinda ruin this show for me at least.

Basically, what I see it as, is Discord corrupting the primary 5 elements of harmony to corrupt the element of magic and gain the power of Discord, bringing eternal chaos to the lands of Equestria.

The dictionary defines "discord" as a lack of agreement or harmony. That could fit in perfectly with the mane 6 losing what made them the elements of harmony, thus resulting in a less colorful pony with a different personality. For example Rainbow Dash could be frightened of everything instead of being her normal fearless self. She might be running away from Discord but Applejack is pulling her back with the lasso we see here.

As soon as I saw that clip, before it went up on the site (Kein in the #EquestrianStudy channel linked it some hours earlier) I guessed that the grey RD was probably something to do with Discord.
Hmm, I was kind of hoping that this was from a different episode, I was kind of looking forward to my idea of Discord being a Anti-Spiral style villain. Ah well, I guess they know what they are doing. I just hope that it isn't the "Discord stole Rainbow Dash's colour" idea. That seems a bit silly to me.

My story involves an external entity targeting one of the mane six (guess which) and turning her into a Nightmare Moon-esque state. Discord reminds me way too much of my bad guy to begin with, and now this...
I'm in that "damn, I have to change my fanfic since it's about to become canon" lull at present... and I really don't like it. O.O

I'm throwing Dash' in as a name for grey dash. Dash Prime (or Dash dash if you live in parts of the world that read ' as "dash")
So I'm guessing Discord did something to Dash to make her that way. I still can't tell if he's going to be a serious, threatening villain like NMM or just a big troll causing chaos for the lulz.
I'm also really curious to see if Luna's gonna help out in these first two episodes. I think she will:
Lauren confirmed Luna for season two in the middle of last season - about the time they'd be working on season 2's openers (or season 2's enders as they had planned)
There was an animator that mentioned watching a Luna episode back May - when they'd be finishing up work on the Discord episodes.
It kinda makes sense to include her ASAP after a season's absence.
My guess. Due to discord seemingly trying to break them up, then maybe as Rainbow fails her "Loyalty" she starts to fade. Just a guess though.
Does that mean that Depressed Dash is possible or is @ApetureTestSubject's guess the most accurate? I'm leaning towards his guess more then my own, normally because I'm wrong.

The problem with the "not gay unless confirmed" approach is that it's heterosexist. So watch yourself.
There's no evidence of Dash's orientation being one or the other, so feel free to come to whatever conclusion you want. But don't insist that your conclusion is right and other conclusions are wrong.

I see. So you are treating each character as a Schrodinger's cat of sorts? In other words, they are both gay, and not gay until confirmed to be one? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Also, the reasons I personally refuse to believe Dash (or any other character) is gay until proven, are three, and simple.
1) Being a devout Christian, I believe that homosexuality is morally wrong, and unnatural. It is a choice you make, not something you can't.
2) It is the societal norm to be heterosexual.
3) It is simply not important to the show. (Of course, neither is fanfiction, or this comment, but I digress.)
At any rate this is only my two cents, a little piece of my mind. And it's for all you blokes out there who think Dash, or any other Character is gay. Not forcing you to agree with me. I won't apologize if you are gay, because I have a right to my opinion. Not insinuating anyone is gay

I dunno either, but I have a theory: before the first season aired, Hasbro and the Hub had no way to know whether the series would be a hit or a flop. This way, if it was a flop, they had a ready-made “movie” they could use as a bookend to cap off the series.
Of course, it turned out to be a smash hit, so they cashed in their insurance policy as the new season opener.
By the way, does anyone know if the show’s been a hit with the intended audience? There’s been a lot of attention lavished on the surprise demographic, but I haven’t seen much focus on the girls who are, after all, the folks for whom all this was designed!

According to Lauren, the intended audience is little girls and their parents. My five year old daughter is absolutely pony-crazy right now. She made me watch the pilot twice in a row the other day and would have watched it a third time after that if I had let her. I've also caught my son watching it on YouTube more than once.
As for me, well, I'm here. Reading intently about the possible implications of gray flying ponies getting lassoed off a cloud. So there's one data point. If anyone from Hasbro is lurking in here, I'm also a data point who has already bought several ponies and will be buying several more in the near future.

Is anyone else freaking out over season 2? In celebration, I spent $60 in MLP toys (plus another $20 for gas and going to about 10 stores). Also, I bought a rainbow dash shirt, and I have spent 95% of my time on EqD or watching something pony related. I have also been listening to MLP music/remixes in the car... I think I'm obsessed...

If memory serves, she didn't lower herself to confirming or disproving RD's sexuality at all, but instead settled for making another point - that it's asinine and quite disrespectful to both straight and gay tomboys to assume RD is lesbian because of her personality or color scheme.
If I'm right, then she really didn't say anything besides "make up your mind, but don't try to claim you're more right than anypony else."
If you wanna make RD lesbian for your story, that's great! I personally find it cute, and I ship her with Fluttershy myself. But you won't see me stand by and call somepony's RD/Big Mac love story misguided or inaccurate because of that.
The only orientations proven onscreen are Rarity (straight) and Spike (straight, interspecies) anyway.

You know, I just thought of something... A rather interesting theory, with some quite possibly fascinating implications.
Discord... it's some sort of demon/bad guy-creature of some sort, that ''sows'' discord in the mind/heart of people/ponies.
With that in mind now, think about what happened to Luna, which became Nightmare Moon... ... ...Yeah ! I'm starting to be quite sure that this ''Discord'' is responsible, at least partially, for Luna's transformation all those years ago !
And, even the description of the word seem to indicate this, both the 'reason' being a being named ''Discord'' and his possible implication in Luna's previous fate.
