Are you guys blind or something? The second comic was purposed to warm our hearts, not send sick wonders about a Spike and Rarity child in our heads. That was truly an adorable comic, and it's a shame some of you don't comment as though you acknowledge that.
Spike and Rarity...I mean they can...but it would never...I mean...Really? The idea is adorable and all but I always imagined them adopting! If they even ever well, you know got together.

Anyway since when physics and any other nature rule that we know has to exist on the world of Equestria? i mean its a "magical" world and any science or laws that we know has not be necesarily applied.
I think this is the first time a comic actually made me CRY.

As seen in Gryphons, crossbreeding isn't that taboo in Equestria. The only problem I see with a Spikity child is the age difference.

Not only does this suggest Gem is technically possible if we assume Discord was born naturally, it raises some interesting questions on what he'd grow up to do...

I don't think the biology is a problem at all, but the age difference? It kind of is. I think Spike's precocious crush on Rarity is adorable, but I generally don't like to take it further than that.

I always thought of alicorns as the possible offspring from dragon-pony unions considering they are rare, can both use magic and fly, have much more powerful magic than regular unicorns, live an insane amount of time and potentially grow somewhat bigger over time compared to other ponies.
And of course, nopony raises their eyebrows at Spike's crush for Rarity. x3
I also feel Discord might even been the last of a long traditional line for the ponies of having dragons as their ruler/guardian/god.
Which well, cements that idea even more, because if ponies would revere dragons as gods the idea of some of them going as far as mating with them would likely been treated as acceptable, if not a honor.
But I guess enough about that, I'll go back to my own corner of the internet now. ^^;

I think Gem is absolutely adorable (and I see Sweetie Bell got her Master Cutie Mark in singing after all).
I don't see what's so bothersome about the premise. In a fantasy realm, does it ever matter that there are hybrids of species especially when we see them all the time and never think twice about where they came from? (Equestria Examples: Griffon, Cockatrice and even Discord)
Rarity and Spike probably got all the tips they needed from Donkey and Dragon from Shrek anyway.

Exactly, there are already crossbreeds in Equestria.
Actually, I believe that you'll find that dragons mature allot faster than other creatures, like ponies. And once they reach an age of 10-20 they stop, and begin to mature more slowly, at this point they are around 20-25 in Dragon-Years. At Spike's age, (4? 5?) It would take about five to seven years until he catches up with Rarity, making their age relationship fine.
Onto the Genetics, dragons are able to...crossbreed through magical means, an ancient characteristic evolved by dragons so that they may bear offspring even if a suitable mate was not available. Even if there was some complications in the birthing of the child, they have magic that could be used to aid them.
I believe that I have put all of your worries to rest, TAKE THAT, GEM HATERS!
