Elementary my dear Watsons, I have always theorized that all ponies in the world of Equestria are magical, not just the normal Unicorns and abnormal Alicorns. Perhaps all ponies, including Earth and Pegasus, are able to emit a magical, telekinetic field around their hooves, allowing them to do things such as sew, play video games, and hold onto apples. *Takes a long puff of his pipe, picks up violin, and begins to play*

I love that second comic. Something about the facial expressions on Luna. And the fact that I've been in the same position described in those last three panels time and again...
I'm of the opinion that a Pony 'hoof' is radically different from that of an Earth equine. I believe that, while being tough, it is still flexible, rendered possible by a multitude of small bones similar to that of a human hand.
This allows both rudimentary manual dexterity, as well as allowing for a greater variety of gestures, such as pointing and the like.
@Delta Pangaea If I recall, the ponies aren'tSUPPOSED to be ble to manipulate things that well with the hooves... though sometimes the animators just have to say "don't look at this too closely"
The way I understand it is, the pony's hooves can 'bend' more then they do in our world, which basically means they have the dexterity that a human would possess while wearing an oven mitt; able to grab and pick-up things, but unable to finely manipulate small objects. This is probably only true for their forehooves, however, or else activities like bucking for apples would be painful.
