Those are... depressing. Especially the second one.

Yeah the second one was pretty depressing...

Damn.

So, Twilight's not turning into an immortal alicorn...

Well done at any rate.

Immortality blues are no fun :( It always makes me feel bad for Celestia, Luna, and Spike.

SprintF said...

I wish I had done this.

Anonymous said...

Yes, the curse of immortality.

Although some say it would eventually drive you to ignore people around you. As you get older time seems to pass quicker.

After thousands of years compared to your life span everyone would seem to wink out like sparks from a fire, why would you care for them then.

Great, I just made it even more depressing.

You know, the moon is often above the horizon in broad daylight. Some days they even rise at the same time.
So Luna is just on an irregular schedule.
They should be able to spend lots of time together.

Luckily for us, no one ages in cartoons. The mane 6 are just as immortal as celestia.

Until the show gets cancelled midway through the third season of course.

What it is like to be an immortal goddess-queen -- the subject of so many Celestia fanfics on this site. The first echoes "The Sun is Tired" without the Grimdark. The second echoes "Dusk/Dawn", with the dilemma Celestia has always faced -- whether to hold herself aloof from mortals and shield herself from the loss of watching them go to dust, or become involved with her students and mortal ponies and the Magic of Friendship, only to take the pain of having them go to dust generation after generation after generation. In "Dusk/Dawn", she saw what holding herself aloof and distant did to her sister and almost did to her. (It was her aloofness and isolation which prevented her from using the Elements to exorcise her sister.)

Celestia is one of the best god-figures in recent fiction -- benevolent, approachable, even playful. And capable of hurt and loss.

TheSweetestBelle said...

Oh... Oh wow.

These are the kinds of things that make me turn away from the Trollestia theories.

Daetrin said...

Comics like these make Celestia my favorite character.

Anonymous said...

Hugs for Celestia?

Sweetonionct said...

*Sadness*
I need a hug now...

Anonymous said...

Actually, I think trollestia makes sense. She pranks her subjects because she desperately wants to connect with them outside of the ruler/subject dynamic.

Also, for the lulz. Obviously.

youtube|UsurperKingZant said...

The end of the second 1 kind of hit me

Slepter said...

Hey, way to go Trollestia.

FEELING BAD ABOUT IMMORTALITY

@Anonymous NONONONONO!!!!! Don't even THINK that! No show cancelation. Not with a fanbase this awesome! We are Brony and Brony is Legion for we are MANY!!!

Anonymous said...

Manly tears were shed at the second one.

Anonymous said...

It's just sad.

And celestia isn't confirmed immortal, if the universe ever has a end of time and everything else she will 'die' then.

Eddie Perkins said...

This is weird. I think my eyes might melting?

Anonymous said...

@Slepter

You're such a fag, aren't you?

People like you in this fandom is that's why we can't have a nice things.

Anonymous said...

For some reason it makes me sadder realizing that those ponies will eventually die some day while I could hardly care about my own mortality.

Anonymous said...

This is simply Celestial propaganda, y-you can't make me feel sympathy for you...*sniff*

Brushstroke Bauble said...

Celestia is now really close to being my favorite character...

I cried so hard reading both of those.

Anonymous said...

What's with the sudden burst of comics?
Also, MY HEART!

Shingo said...

...

shit. Now I'm sad.

SplitLighting said...

Whoa, second one got me on an emotional scale.

Anonymous said...

This is so sad. It's even sadder when you consider how many people write her off as a giant troll/tyrant. How do you think she feels about that, you monsters?!

Anonymous said...

Wait, Celestia is basically a goddess right? So maybe she rules over some sort of after-world as well, or at least she can go and visit her old friends there...yeah that's it...

Bryan said...

Oh, dear Princess Celestia. Well over a thousand years old and you still haven't learned the most important lesson about friendship.

All those ponies, they didn't just take a piece of your heart away with them. They also each gave a piece of their heart to you. Remember the joy along with the pain and perhaps you'll realize you've gained far more than you've lost.

Homfrog said...

Oh wow. Wow... I... I'm all sad... ...my heart has fallen into my kidneys and I can feel the sadness radiating like a dirty bomb in slow motion through my nervous system... ow... I'm sad now. This... this is actually quite intense.

Immortality... such a burden. I... I don't even know what to say, I'm not being melodramatic or anything or over-reacting. This is honestly sad. I... Ohhhh my goodness... ow... cold shivers... I wouldn't want to be immortal. Celestia and Luna are my pity characters now... it feels weird to have pity for a goddess but I suppose it's part of the human... and equine... condition. To close with a half-relevant quote:

"I get the creeping feeling all my old friends are gone, and that this baby tooth no longer fits in my skull..." - Canajoharie

...Ohhhhmygoodness...

zerila said...

Thinking this way about Celestia makes her gentle teasing that much more touching

@Anonymous

Don't worry about it. If the show gets canceled, no big deal... we'll continue it ourselves :)

Aww, sad comics are sad. :'( I'd give poor Celestia a hug.

Artrageous said...

The first one was good, but the second one was incredibly powerful and touching.

I'm thinking about all my pets that have died now.

Bushie said...

A single manly tear.

TGPFluttershy said...

That was...Beautiful.

Normally I'm not a big fan of the "overthinking it" but this was really well done.

LoLZorZs said...

Silly, Celestia...Twilight will take over your throne, why you think she has soo much magic inside her and spent the last 20 years learning it? Silly Celly/Tia =)

C.Olimar788 said...

I hope any of you that write fic about Celestia as a tyrant feel bad now... :P

But seriously, great (if tragic) comics. Celestia really is a sad character when you think about it...

Etoile said...

I don't cry anymore thanks to Clannad, it stole my tears, and everything else seems mellow by comparison, but this was rather touching. The second one had a nice finality to it that really hit home.

Presspass said...

These are very thoughtfully composed. I know these concepts have come up before, but it's nice to see them "fleshed out" like this.

EonMaster said...

@Etoile

Good to know I'm not the only one who lost all their tears to Clannad and After Story. I watched that 2 years ago, and that was the last show that got me into tears.

However, a lot of these fanfics and comics do come close and fill my heart with sadness.

Stogee said...

wow I actually teared up a bit

ElectricZoNe said...

I'm sad now :(, Such a beautiful comic. But still sad, poor poor Celestia.

curse of immortality ...live forever...love no one...very sad...touched my hearth ..my eyes got dried over the years though ...but this is touching and sad really

Idle Drifter said...

Truly heavy is the heart of whom wears the crown.

SomeGuy said...

[Sniff] Why does every comic to star Celestia have to be so sad?

sotha said...

So touching. A side of immortality that, though nothing new, is oft forgotten. It really does lend a tragic sense to Celestia.

@Bryan
And that is something that is people (and ponies) tend to forget when they are only able to focus on the tragedy.

Wierdplatformer said...

Quick, we need to bring in Pinkie!

MaskOfData said...

The first one...
Crap, did I do that? As far as I know, "The Sun is Tired" was the first fic to take that perspective...
Well, if I did, I am honored.

Gersh said...

You don't see very many thoughtful comics, but these two prove that they do exist, and they are awesome.

I need to go hug both Celestia and Twilight now... :'(

Valmir_R0yalGuArd said...

please tell me Twilight is her most powerful student so far because Celestia has sensed she is another Alicorn waiting to emerge... Maybe Tia will grant her immortality... Anyone know some Celestia Twilight shipping fics?

Valmir_R0yalGuArd said...

@ Mask of data

Please tell me you plan on updating that in the near future. I want to see how that finishes up.

@Bryan

Well said, Brian, well said.

*sobs* Dang it... That last line of the second one... Immortality freakin' sucks! *more sobs*

Anonymous said...

i didnt think i'd ever B'AWW this much for celestia.

Anonymous said...

Stuff like this is why I dislike all the "Oh Celestia is so evil" stuff. She's a very old mare with a hard job that alienates her from people, which has to doubly suck for a pony as sociable as she is. Also, she had to lock her sister away, the one other lifeform with a comparable lifespan as her, because she tried to cause the apocalypse.

Celestia is basically a saint. I think she gets a free pass on as much good natured pranking as she wants.

Anonymous said...

I've read some fics where it's revealed that Luna and Celestia have access to the afterlife--- and routinely visit their old friends there.
would explain how Celestia can keep so happy after a thousand years of seeing friends pass away...

aramaru said...

This is often why immortals in fiction go crazy after a while; either absolute boredom sets in, or utter loss as everyone you know and everything you care about dies or passes on. Celestia is actually in a better position then most, and that's the scary part.

ChaosIzGood said...

I just noticed that, in the second comic, some of the pictures have dried tears on them. Made a sad comic even sadder.

Firleycat said...

Half the comics I have seen of Celestia are either her as Trollestia or her being upset about her immorality. Kind of a weird contrast between the two, unless you start to think she acts like a troll to get away from her pain then it gets a whole lot sadder very quickly. Why do I over think things?

Shadow Dragon said...

@Valmir_R0yalGuArd

For Twilight and Celestia shipping, there's Correspondence and Letters, Letters, Letters.

Dr. M. Roscope said...

Wh...what is happening to my eyes? They're, like, sweating...

Lazy Luna said...

My are were leaking after the second one...

Anonymous said...

Well *uck. Now I'm all introspective and stuff.

Anonymous said...

@Slepter
Oh, shut the fuck up.

Silent Solace said...

If I was in her position I'd just say fuck it all and become a tyrant! Every Trollestia and tyrant-Celestia story makes sense now.

Azal said...

You know... thanks to the ending of one fiction, I'm not so bothered by the second one, because I use that fics reality.

But the first one... really how tragic is it when all those you care for and look out for are scared of you. Then take Twilight who both seem closest to each other... but like in the episode "Bird in the Hoof" Twilight seems positively terrified of Celestia. Seriously, that has to break Celestia's heart.

Now for those who need to feel better about the immortality, minor spoiler below as to what the story was that made me feel better, it's in the epilogue.

The story is
Half the Day is Night.

o god. after reading this last night, i went to bed and started to think. I continued the comic in my head and it was sad. it goes as followed.

There is a small black space
- The next panel is of celestia laying down looking slightly up ward with teary eyes in a dark room with candles surrounding the whole room..
- Luna walks in and asks if everything is ok. Celestia doesn't move or respond.
- Luna lays down next to her and comforts her, but tia still doesn't budge her gaze.
- the next panel shows what tia is looking at; a picture of twilight that is larger then all the rest and takes up most of the wall.

- i cried.

Anonymous said...

The second one reminds me of Kaim from Lost Odyssey (an immortal being), almost half of his memories (that you see in the game) pertain to having to deal with getting to know people and realising as he does that he'll have to say goodbye one day =(.

How can you call them comics, when they make people sad.

Axl_Dark said...

immortality. some say that it is a curse, to watch as all those you love die around you. but i always saw it a a blessing. i am absolutly terrified of death and have always wanted to live forever. but instead of focusing on the death around you, foucus at all the happyness you bring to people, all the love you share! you have givin so many people happyness in your ever-life. you have shown so many people love. you also change all of human (or pony) kind! every action you do will shape the future of the world! you can brighten trillions of peoples lifes and change the whole world with the power of immortality. the only person who makes yor life sad and misirable is you. (to an extent of course). so always look back at all the lives you changed, all the people you brought love to, and look to the future. to see how many more lifes can i better, and how i will change history.

Ethan Beesley said...

This reminds me of what I always believed. Immortality/longevity isn't a gift, it is a curse. Anyone who want's to live forever will regret it after the first generation. I've had to tell my friends as much.
