    1. It appears we may have come to the third page. Lemme tell you something, Jake. I hate reading fanfic (they almost always suck). I used to just pass over all the Story pages on EqD. I eventually found a couple stories that I may find fun to read, even for a fanfic-hating guy such as myself. You can read the rest of my view on fanfics at the bottom of the Junior Speedsters Forever page.

Anyway, this was the first fanfic I put on my "to read" list. This and CRISIS: Equestria. I've never played Silent Hill, but I know a lot about it. I haven't read any Grimdarks yet, but I thought I'd find them more interesting than a [Normal] fic.

Boy, was I wrong. I'm not insulting your story at all. I think it was amazingly well-written. It deserves the 5 stars I'm giving it. I guess I wasn't prepared for the torture porn involved in this story. Now I know why everyone complains about grimdark. The memories part at the end tore me up inside, but it fit so well with the Silent Hill feel. You also did very well with the monsters, and how they personify Pinkie's past. This is the first grimdark story I read on this site, and it probably will be the last. I don't think pretty ponies go well with skinning, butchering, and rotting. Once again, this was a really good story to read, and the descriptions of the monsters were VERY detailed. One good point I'd like to make is the frequent reminders of how badly the environment smelled. That's usually a thing to easily forget when playing or reading.

I guess Grimdark is not for me. Thanks for the damn good story. I enjoyed reading it.

    2. Dammit! After sleeping on it (about 18 hours later), I want to read Part 2! I'm not a fan of Grimdarks, but damn! Part 1 was really well written! Still take my ^previous post^ seriously, though. It is true, I haven't read any fanfics (and enjoyed them) until this Pony fandom. This one was one of the few in which I had interest before I read my first.

Good writing, Jake. You write very descriptively. Few writers take the time to constantly remind us of how horrible the situation is (few writers can do it without annoying the reader). Keep up the good work!

I would recommend you read Silent Ponyville 2 for sure. I think it's the best story produced by the fandom. However, there is a story set between SP1 and SP2 called "Too Shy for a Rainbow" that acts as a prequel to Silent Ponyville 2 that you should read first. It really adds a lot to SP2.

Oh, how I hate shipping stories (the main reason why I didn't read fanfic until the pony fandom). I was wondering about that description: After Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash started dating....
I guess I'll read that beforehand. I won't let my opinions of shipping ruin it, though. Should only take a day, anyway.

      That reminds me...
I read through the comments. You promised an explanation to the monsters in SP1. Really, I'm only curious about the Groaners. I've gotten all the others. In SH1, they were simply a manifestation of Alessa's fear of dogs. The Groaners here were rotting 3-legged ponies. I couldn't pinpoint the meaning behind them. That and Abstract Daddy's appearance (if you were going for that).

Also, I wanted to comment on the great use of foreshadowing. After finishing SP1, I went back to read the 1st chapter to better appreciate the dream sequence.

One last thing that has been eating at me every time I see it. It may be nitpicking, but I thought it would be worth mentioning. I'm sure you know this already, but colts are male horses BELOW the age of 4. Every mention of the Slender Pony called him a colt.
The problem: the word "Stallion" just does not flow well with most sentences. The word sounds too regal, and it certainly would not sound right being used on that particular character. If this is why you chose not to use it, well, good thinking.

      Once again. Nice writing.

As for the shipping, I wasn't particularly fond of them myself before I read Too Shy+Silent Ponyville 2. Trust me, Jake does the whole shipping thing in a very unique and totally in-character (for both ponies)manner that makes it so worth it. Even if you're unsure about it at first, trust me, it all comes together by the end.

    6. @Equinenox

Haha, I'm surprised I called you back with my writing, I wasn't expecting you to want to read Silent Ponyville 2 ^_^

Too Shy for a Rainbow isn't a required read, but it adds a lot to Silent Ponyville 2. I also wrote with Silent Ponyville 2 specifically in mind. I'm not a fan of shipping either, I do not do shipping unless I have a reason to do shipping. Silent Ponyville 2 gave me a reason to do it and explained the shipping in Too Shy for a Rainbow further. I also tried to at least be a bit unique in my shipping.

I'm not likely to write a shipping story beyond FlutterDash shipping. Unless I have a need to or a sudden inspiration. Or a very amusing joke. So yea, if you do read the future stories I await your reactions in anticipation <3

    9. Study of the Mind Delve seems like it's going to be a full-on Silent Ponyville (Silent Canterlot...ville?) story, but it's not labeled Silent Ponyville 3. Is that just because it doesn't seem to be taking place in Ponyville, or is it going to be a shorter story, like an intermission or something?

I'm really liking how Celestia seems to be involved in this one, too. I hope Zephyrion doesn't turn out to be right, even though that would have interesting implications on that plot, because I'd love to see what the Mind Delve brings to the plate from Celestia's subconscious.

Well, you'll know when I update with Silent Ponyville 3 as that'll be the title of it. This is a tie-in story for it though, so it's setting up plot elements for it ^_^

    16. Know what? I said this on fanfiction, but I'll say it again. In regards to The Silence of Ponyville by Codymau:

...Fuck you, brony. Fuck you. I am a man. I am 20 years old, 225 lbs. and 6'3". I'm a security guard. I've been hit with rocks and bottles at work. I have a scar over my right eye from a drunk with a broken glass bottle. Someone tried to stab me three weeks ago, so I broke his face with my knee. In short, I am manly as fuck.

I just noticed Study of the Mind Delve isn't tagged [Grimdark] or any variation thereof. Hm. Still, very interested in seeing where this goes, and finding out more about this spell. About why Twilight couldn't follow her friends into their subconscious...es?, about who this Magus Darkarts guy might've been, and about how nobody's commented on the fact that the author's name is freakin' MAGE OF DARK ARTS. Really curious what that V stands for.

Also, I'm hoping your Luna lightens up a bit on the shy talk. I can only handle so many ellipses.

Also(2), awesome update speed! Are multiple chapters already written out, or did you just churn chapter two out that fast?

      ReplyDelete
    20. Oh no, just began The Study of the Mind Delve. You'd think that after talking about a spell that lets one face their nightmares, and how the caster has no control, that the correct course would be to NOT experiment on Twilight. Christ, I hope Twilight has a happy past... and I have a funny feeling that Celestia is just a projection of Twilight's mind, like a defense mechanism, and not the actual Princess.

      Well, onto the next chapter.

      *Fingers crossed*.

      ReplyDelete
    21. Well, chapter two of Mind Delve complete. My predictions where 'slightly' off. Poor Luna and Twilight, they don't know the severity of the road they're walking down. Maybe Twilight is still in her mind? Maybe not!?

      I need chapter three.
Damn it, Jake. You and your stories!

      ReplyDelete
    22. Oooookk... I big amount of side-stories just popped up ? I don't think I will be able to read 'Blood Chronicles' any time soon, with all the stories I already have in my backlog... The others side-stories, maybe one day...

      -----

      Mind Delve, part 1 :

      >and then Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash want to talk to me about some personal spell they need.
      -*whisper* ~yay~

      >“Owlowiscious will be there too if I need any help.
-*surprised* ''AH! Owlicious ! Where have you been ?''
...but, seriously, this Owl is in almost no story, for some odd reasons. Almost every author apparently forgot or just don't include him ?

      >the name of the author. >“Magus V. Darkarts.”
-Well, if we just add even barely a small touch of 'obvious', his name would become ''Yevil Sorcererus''... a bit like with Alucard or Count Draclau(from Final Fantasy Tactic). ;)

      >“I found it because my friends were having troubles with nightmares…and they were some serious nightmares.
-!!GASP!! ...Twilight is actually gonna talk to Celestia about those very strange nightmares that seem to especially target the Bearers of the Elements of Harmony !
I was waiting for this, since the first story, honestly.
(later : Hum, well... not exactly what I though would happen, it I guess it's good too... for now.)

      >I think she took the lesson and used it to strengthen her resolve in life, rather than let it keep her down.”
-The best way to go with that sort of things, really.

      >“I’d like to see what this spell does for myself. Would you grant me permission to cast it upon you?”
      -*cough* ... Uh-oh, Spaghettios!
(later : Ah ? Well, false alarm. Good, I suppose ?)

      >“P-Princess! How did we get here!?”
-You know... it's a good thing that the author didn't try to throw some random excuses, to prevent Celestia (the mighty Princess-Goddess) from being in and able to go through the 'spell'.

      -----

      Mind Delve, part 2 :

      >nestled on a pillow surrounded by a fort made out of books. >“The munsters can’t get me while I read now!”
      -Awww... Bookfort filly-Twilight. :)
A fortress of knowledge and equal cuteness. :D

      >“Ooooh…curse my mind…this is so embarrassing.” Twilight groaned at Celestia’s laughing.
-And funny too :) ...let me guess ? This is gonna change soon, isn't it ?

      >They’re so poorly written!” Twilight said letting loose her inner critic
-Is this the author making a joke about (new) fan-fiction authors ?

      > “…You’d like me as your study partner?” Luna perked up
      -Study partner, Go ! ...and after that : Bookfort, V2.0 ! :D

      -----

Well, so far it's pretty interesting. It's 'different' than the previous stories, to say the least, but it's in no way a bad thing, really.

I suppose that the story, though being labeled 'Normal', will still have some bits of slightly dark stuff ? The bits of 'Comedy' are well received so far, at least ;).

    28. Question: Now that Twilight Sparkle has shown on the show that she has a few bolts missing too (Lesson Zero), is that grounds for her being featured in her very own Silent Ponyville treatment?

The implications of how her childhood went (had no friends, terrified of 'magic kindergarten', imagining all the little filly foals laughing at her)seems to suggest she had something traumatic that happened to her as a foal.

And that she doesn't know what the spell does makes me wonder...

I would give my money to see this continued in that vein. :>

    29. I've not played 'Silent Hill' (or seen the film), but I enjoyed these (read the 1st two so far).

Well, I say 'enjoyed' - horrified fascination would be a better description. I had no trouble with the Pinkie one, but #2...I'm having trouble getting some of the scenes out of my head (the bathtub and 'no flying in the house'). I'm mainlining comedy shipfics at the moment, which helps a little.

      Well done (you bastard!).

Resetting the wing scene: not sure I buy being able to reset a broken bone by yourself - dislocated yes, but not broken - especially with only one foreleg working. Hmm, you could probably manage it if you tied your wing to something and stretched (makes me shiver just to think about it!)...

Final comment: even the 'best' ending (not including the comedy ones) leaves me feeling a bit empty - in my mind it seems unlikely that RD would forgive Lance as easily as Fluttershy did, so I live in hope she'll catch up with him one dark and stormy night...

Guess what! I'm back! I've done a lot of fanfic reading after a month, and I think I'm ready for Silent Ponyville 2. I've just finished Too Shy, and I intend to start SP2 tomorrow. I'm reviewing Too Shy here because it is a part of the SP series.

Now to get the criticism out of the way: This fic didn't (but sort of did at the same time) avoid what makes me hate shipfics. That thing is where the character has a crush on the other character right from the start. The reason why I don't like this is because I don't see it as canon. I could see it happening if those two characters were put together, they would develop feelings over time as long as their characters were played right.

On the other hand, you sort of did just that. You gave a reason why Fluttershy would have feelings for Dash with the flashbacks. I had to disagree a bit with how they developed their feelings, but I can also see it at the same time. Fluttershy's timid nature contrasts very well with Dash's boisterousness. They fit well together. The red colt who had a crush on Dash confirmed my guess that the letter was not from Dash. I doubt he is important enough to appear in SP2, but I don't know that yet, do I?

Other thoughts, hmm. I guess my overall thought on this story was confused. Not at the story, at myself. Normally I would bash the average shipfic as I have since my reading of early fanfiction (which ruined fanfiction for me until ponies). It could be the fandom: I could be so accepting of a fic like this just because I like this fandom and the ponies so much. It could also be the need for me to get through this, so I can read SP2.

I can't really tell which, but my guess is the former. I think it's the fandom that has kept me from hating MLP shipfics. Anyway, here's to Silent Ponyville 2. I loved the story, the use of foreshadowing, and descriptive scenery of the first, even if the amount of torture porn caught me off my guard. I've been wondering when I'd get around to reading the sequel. I only hope it has just as much, if not more, descriptive scenery as the first.

Wish me luck, and expect to hear from me within the week with my thoughts!

When I first read Too Shy, I was more or less of the same opionion as you. That said, all I have to say about your review of Too Shy is that after you read SP2 you'll be all like "I c wut u did thar Jake!" And I of course mean that in the best way possible. Seriously, you'll read SP2 and your enjoyment of Too Shy will at least double. You may even be compelled to read it again after reading SP2. I know I was.

    32. @Ace2401

"you'll read SP2 and your enjoyment of Too Shy will at least double."

This is already what I was expecting. It's why I bothered reading Too Shy. When wanting to get more from the same universe, I don't skip over optional stuff. It makes the end experience not as fulfilling. If it's a part of the story, I will read it. I think reading SP2 without Too Shy would leave me not feeling like I've gotten the whole experience.

    37. Well then. I finished SP2 this evening. Over the course of the week, I was contemplating what I'd write as a review. I'm in the middle of a Silent Hill binge. I finished SH2 a week ago, and I'm almost done with SH3 now. After reading this, I thought "Oh boy, somebody likes Silent Hill 2!" I like how you drew a lot from SH2; that one is my favorite. It's much more depressing than the other games.

This post may seem like I'm bashing the fic, or I didn't get the subtext. Just keep reading. My opinion and understanding of the fic changed as I kept reading, so I want my post to mirror that feeling.

There are SPOILERS for SP2 in this post.

Firstly, the opening: Powerful scene. When the music box started hissing, I was thinking to myself "Uh oh." Later, as Pinkie is getting Twilight to put her in the dream as well, I was reminded of a question I like to ask my friends regarding Silent Hill. I'll ask it in another post after this. In this same scene, Twilight would see Fluttershy's dreams. I would say they weren't as scary as Pinkie's. I know each pony has their own problems, so that didn't bother me. What I did think was the repetition of the word "pain." It seemed to annoy me a bit. The repetition made it less of a powerful entity, and more like a simple word with little meaning. "Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain." Yeah, so what? That was my train of thought at the time. I was thinking "Show, don't tell."

Now then. After the first few chapters, I felt a little bit of disappointment with the lack of grim and dark imagery that was present in SP1. This had mostly deserted hallways, junk in disrepair, and broken objects. Not to mention the dragon. A dragon. Is it undead? Nope. Wow, scary. I didn't think much of the dragon until the end. At the time, I was asking: Where's the hellish rooms, the hanging bodies, the random blood smears? I thought to myself about my favorite scene in SP1: "Run." (You know) The amount of horror in that scene was amazing. The description of the room put me on edge (of my seat). You created a perfect build up to where you read that single word, and right then, you know you have to f-king run. I eat up scary stuff like that. I settled on the reason being: Pinkie's memories involve death and dismemberment while Fluttershy's memories were a bit more tame. Back to SP2. When Fluttershy was running through the sewers (or what I thought were sewers), I was wondering about the symbolism. At the time, I was at a loss. Now that I've finished, I know the water played a part, but I still don't get how she had to go left or right. The left-right choices: Was that some symbolism there?

Now, the dark pony, and the endless stairs. Once I saw the use of water, and how the dark pony's presence made the air "feel as if there was immense pressure, and hard to breath," I took a good guess that her dad tried to drown her somehow. The rest of the symbolic imagery was a little harder to guess. I could tell the nurse pony had something to do with the dark pony. The necklace of black flame meaning the nurse is under it's influence. The nurse's face bandaged up left me confused though. Even after I've finished the fic, I can't really tell what the symbolism was there until I read the beastiary. Back to the endless staircase. Another powerful scene to keep the reader on the edge. The whole flying underwater thing seemed a little odd, but it's good to reference back to ShyDash memories because that's what drives Fluttershy through the whole story.

Now for the more powerful scene. Fluttershy is sneaking past the nurse, who alerts the monsters of her presence. Another scene that kept me on edge. All the monsters were coming out of the woodwork, and Fluttershy could only run. Fluttershy being broken twice by the dark pony, and kicked by the nurse kept the scene exciting (don't take that the wrong way).

      ReplyDelete
    38. Later, more memories. The nurse beating filly Fluttershy made my guess the next scene. I was correct when just as Fluttershy left: "Oh doctor..." I thought to myself "Eyep. I knew it." Later, Fluttershy meets with Pinkie. I almost thought Pinkie was another part of the world until she spoke. I assumed Pinkie Pie has gone back to being guilty to dragging her friends to their deaths (or near-deaths). She is in an endless battle with her own guilt throughout this ordeal. That's heavy. Later, encountering Dash in the Otherworld: I grimaced, and thought "Oh geeze, I hope he has a good explanation for using THIS scene." When I read how Dash always burned her bridges behind her, I wore a content look, and thought, "Good job."

Getting near the end, the memories really shed some light (as they should). My guess was correct about her dad attempting to drown her, but Fluttershy killing her mother threw me off. I didn't anticipate that part at all. If there were any hints to that in the story, I missed them (except the opening). What left me guessing was the intent of the dark pony. Yes, it is her father; I know that. I was just wondering if you intended him to also function like Pyramid Head (PH was a manifestation of James' need to be punished for what he did to his sick wife. SP2 and SH2 have similar back stories). I was wondering if the dark pony was also there because Fluttershy believed she still needed to be punished for what she did (as she is still guilty of her misdeed, and accepting of her punishments after her trip through SP)

What I did like a lot near the end was Fluttershy's newfound motherly assertiveness. She is the right character to develop this way. Another powerful part is how she not only accepts her father's actions as a part of her life, but embraces them. She forgives her father for his actions, and reassures him that without them, she wouldn't have the friends she had now.

I started reading the endings. At first I was confused about "Meeting Pinkie and Dash in the Otherworld." I was thinking this meant saving them in the end. I corrected myself after the 3rd ending. The best ending was obviously my favorite. It ended the only way it really could. Her father is touched by her forgiving him, but they could never meet again. I was hoping she wouldn't suddenly become buddy-buddy with dad. It would be nearly impossible after what happened. It's also hard to hate her dad as the audience. The story tells of his great feats, and saving lives. Fluttershy makes the right choice not to smear his name, but to simply reconcile with her father. One thing left me wondering here: What is Twilight up to during all of this. One ending says she can see a few images. I wondered if she is standing in her library watching this. Another ending has her in some alternate reality with her book while she watches her friends. What is the time frame for her? Minutes? Real time? Probably not.

I'm running out of steam here, so I think I'm all done for now. SP2 was a great story. The ending was just right. You can't hate her father, but at the same time, you do. He's a good man, but a horrible father. Fluttershy sort of deserved it, but at the same time, she didn't. Stories that get you thinking like that have a longer lasting impression on the audience than if the author chooses for them. I'm looking forward to the other stories. I'm going to read Too Shy 2 then maybe Blood Chronicles or Mind Delve. I'd like to read them in order, so could you fill me in on all of the related stories and their order? Good luck on completing Mind Delve, and eventually starting SP3.

    39. Wow, I didn't think I'd type that much. Actually I anticipated I'd do a lot. I should really just do reviews at ponychan. I'm sure potential authors would cream their pants at how much I type. Anyway, onto that question I mentioned earlier. I ask my friends this (as well as the gentlemen at various imageboards), and I try to get a well thought-out answer. Think long and hard about it, and answer truthfully because only you know what you would do.

      1. Assume the Silent Hill Series never existed. If you were thrust into a foggy town. How would you do? Would you survive to escape? What ending do you think you would get? The good--everything has been solved, and you accept your past--ending, or the bad--You learned nothing, and although you have escaped, it is likely to repeat--ending. Think hard.

      2. You have played, and beaten every Silent Hill game with all endings. You are somehow thrust into a foggy world that you instantly recognize as a Silent Hill-esque town. You don't know exactly what horrors you must face, but you know that they will be manifestations of your past. You don't know what happened in your past, but you do know it had to be something horrible. With this knowledge of impending hell, and overlooking any detail may lead to your death, how will you survive? Will you be Pinkie Pie (in that one scene, she was a damn trooper who would not overlook any detail)? Don't forget, after Pinkie was separated, she had to fight with her guilt persona, and was ready to give up. Would fear overtake you before the story even starts? Would you be a damn trooper, dodge every monster, and have perfect headshots?

I'll give my answer to these questions sometime in the near future after a few people have given theirs. Be sure to answer truthfully. Don't be afraid to admit you would be overtaken with fear, or admit you'd be too weak to fight monsters. Remember that the town is created for you (or someone close). If you ran through blazing guns (say you are in the US Marines), wouldn't the town take precautions to pacify your strength depending on your past? Think about it! Don't be afraid to admit the truth!

Alright, first, I'll get the easy stuff out off the way. After SP2, you have Study of the Mind Delve (which is finished), and then you have A Rainbow's Surprise, which is also finished. Jake will also likely get the first chapter of SP3 out within a week (I know this because I'm his pre-reader). Blood Chronicles is AU but takes place sometime after SP2. You should read it. In fact, there's a number of good fan stories worth reading, and one has even been declared canon. Go here for everything: Silent Ponyville DA Group

Now about Fluttershy's father: You must not have read the story on DA. Lance is oh so very easy to hate with a passion. A bigger hatedom popped up around him (with me at the helm, no less) than around the Colt fro SP1. In fact, I am well known for hating the ever loving crap out of him. I've pretended to kill him in the comments more than once. In short, I think "total douchebag" is an understatement when it comes to him, and he is most definitely not a good man by any reasonable standard. He's a terrible man. Abusing your child kinda makes that a given. That said, he is not quite irredeemable, but still. He's extremely easy to hate. I just needed to say that.

AND ZOMG FLUTTERSHY DESERVED ABSOLUTELY NONE OF IT DESPITE WHAT SHE SAID SHE REALLY HAD NO IDEA WHAT SHE WAS DOING. FLUTTERSHY WAS THE VICTIM IN THAT SCENE WITH HER MOTHER. THAT WAS TRAUMATIC ENOUGH WITHOUT HER FATHER FLIPPING OUT. I MEAN, SERIOUSLY. *ahem* Sorry about that, but don't say bad things about Fluttershy. It makes me go into Hulk mode. XD

As for the endings, how did you like the one I wrote? (Mine was ending 4+ btw)

And Dash's scene really messed with me because it was an homage to that scene from SP2. In fact, it even inspired me to write something, which everyone will see and read eventually. XD

      And now for your question:

Scenario 1: I think I would get the "best ending" so to speak. I'm sure I would stay sharp throughout the experience, and I would definitely learn my lesson. XD

Scenario 2: Sure I would be afraid, but I would work through that. I'm a trooper, as you say. As for the town catering to me, that would actually make it somewhat less of a physical ordeal. The puzzles would probably be much harder and gruesome to make up for that though. XD

    41. @Equinenox

I've actually been thinking about that ever since the fall weather has been making every morning dark, grim, and foggy as hell... just in case the reality bleeding ever reaches a climax. XD

      1. Hmmmm... If SH never existed, or I'd never heard of it? I would probably survive... my worst fear, above all else, is isolation and being utterly lost and alone, so the town would probably keep the monsters to an absolute minimum to torment me. There wouldn't be any humans, or if there were, they would all be complete and total jerks that would turn on me at the drop of a hat. So... yeah, it'd be depressing, but not fatal. I got more than enough misery to entertain the town.

As for which ending I'd get? Hmm... probably the UFO Ending. XD

      2. Like I said, I DO know all too well what the horrors of my past are... Though I may have repressed some of the more vividly horrid details that the town might use against me. I have moderate combat knowledge, and growing up in the forest has made me used to wielding weapons such as axes, chainsaws, and machetes, allowing me to use some pretty epic melee weapons... also, I love scoped weapons, meaning that it should be possible for me to go to a high spot and snipe monsters from a distance in outdoor areas. I'd also go looking for easter eggs and continuously break the fourth wall, like cursing the inventory system whenever I can't hold anymore or something. Oh, and get addicted to Health Drinks.

Man, I would make a fun SH game! XD

    43. Wow, I want to type a string of expletives here, but I'll stifle it. I was almost done with another near-page length post. Lets just say I started a new paragraph, pressed TAB (it's natural), and pressed delete because I didn't want an indent.

Take a guess what happens when you do that.

Can you not use ctrl+z to undo that mass deletion?

      ReplyDelete
    45. @Ace2401 No, tabbing out of the textbox and pressing backspace is like pressing "Back" on your browser. Ctrl+z doesn't work and, if your browser didn't save the text when you ckick "Forward", you're... well... you're screwed.

It's very frustrating. Especially with long comments or forum posts.

    47. I was going to clarify my earlier post with what I meant in my review, but I lost all of that. Usually when I long-post, I pre-make it in open office to avoid just that, but I didn't expect the post to be so long. I am SO discouraged from retyping it, but I know I will soon, just not right now. I had a really nice thing going about how there is potential for moral and philosophical debate regarding the ending, and I explain why. I was on my last paragraph when I lost it all. I really don't want to retype it right now, so I'll get that post in sometime this evening or tomorrow. Maybe.

The reason SP2 is much more sad and depressing than gore-filled or horror is because the inspiration for it was what I got from my playthrough of Silent Hill 2. And well...Silent Hill 2 is a sad story, its depressing, everything is falling apart and you're alone in this town filled with monsters...but horror to me it was not. Silent Hill 1 was horror, Silent Hill 3 was horror, but Silent Hill 2 was just sad and depressing XD

So yea, thats why Silent Ponyville 2 is what it is. As for why there isn't much symbolism for the death of her mother, her father was basically her punisher for it. Subconsciously she knows she doesn't have to feel guilty for her sin because she has her punisher. As long as she already paid for her sin, she didn't have to again in the town. Plus she still has happy memories of her mother. It's only that one scene that twists her mother's thought for her, and again, the punisher made things okay.

Silent Ponyville 3 is promising to be a great story. And I thank you for the in-depth review. I always love to read long reviews like this X3

SH3 did have awesome otherworld design though. Just not that scary XD
I just ran past most of the monsters, and sometimes killed the more annoying ones. XD

Now see, THAT'S how SH2 was for me.

"Oh hey look, a monster I can very easily avoid, very easily kill, and poses absolutely no threat to me whatsoever in my progress of the game :D"

Where as with SH3 I was like

"OHCRAP THE BULLETS AREN'T WORKING GUT THEM WITH THE SWORD CASUE THEY'RE IN MY PATH"

      XD

And no we're not getting into another why SH2 is better discussion, I'm just explaining why the influence for SP2 was more lackluster than SP1's was to me. Having a different opinion won't change anything XD

      ReplyDelete
    51. @Jake Heritagu

At this point I'm just trolling. XD

SP2 was way better than SP1 anyway, so TROLLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Seriously though, SP2 is the best fic in the entire fandom BAR NONE.

Literally nothing has gotten to me on such an emotional level. Except SH2. XD

Though SP2 was ten times worse with the sad because it was Fluttershy you tormented you F#$%ING MONSTER.

      So yeah.

SH2 translates into better stories than SH1.

      *trollface*

      ReplyDelete
    53. @Jake Heritagu

And for someone who doesn't scare easy and is instead more drawn towards interesting storylines (like me), SH2 was the ultimate deconstruction of the human psyche's reaction to depression and the horror of finding yourself to be your own worst enemy... Essentially, to have the suicidal self-destruct mechanism of the mind come to life to try and fulfill your darkest wish... AGAINST your will... plus the feeling that the environment is alive and wants to kill you in the most traumatizing and humiliating way possible.

Whereas SH1 was about an evil cult kidnapping a guy's daughter to try to birth their god that was so weak it could be easily killed by bullets, and SH3 was essentially just a teenage girl running away from a big, scary evil entity for the first half then running TOWARDS said entity for the latter half after it kills her father offscreen.

In other words, approximately as deep and horrifying as the average fairy tale. :/

Oh! I didn't even see your post; I would have gotten to an answer sooner. Here's reposting what I said earlier: After reading this, I thought "Oh boy, somebody likes Silent Hill 2!" I like how you drew a lot from SH2; that one is my favorite. It's much more depressing than the other games.

Yes, I could tell much of this story was from SH2. That's what I eventually decided when I saw how few horror elements were in this story. I mentioned in my review post how I wrote my posts. I wrote it in my opinion at the time I read the scene described. Earlier in the story, I was not liking it as much because it didn't live up to SP1 at the time. Eventually I started to compare it to Silent Hill 2 (I had just finished it a week before), and the story seemed much more enjoyable. You also confirmed my guess that the Dark Pony was there because Fluttershy believed she needed to be punished. I'm also glad you like to read long reviews because I like to write them. With stories like this, it's hard to sum up one's opinion in just a few sentences. By the way, I haven't done much with Silent Hill 3 since my review post, so I need to get on that. I'm about 3/4 of the way through.

Here's another repost of a question I still would like to be answered: When Fluttershy was running through the sewers (or what I thought were sewers), I was wondering about the symbolism. At the time, I was at a loss. Now that I've finished, I know the water played a part, but I still don't get how she had to go left or right. The left-right choices, the sewer: Was that some symbolism there? What would have been down the wrong paths other than a monster?

Oh, and one more thing. Fluttershy suddenly gets her motherly assertiveness once she confronts the Dark Pony. It's not fresh in my mind, but I think I missed the connection from where she gets that. She just learned how her mother was sick, and insane in her final days. I just remember that I didn't get how she gets the assertiveness used to scare away evil Pinkie Pie, and later wants a foal. Does she just grow up from her experience? Is her knowledge of her father make her want to give a foal the childhood she never had to make up for her mother? I'm sure it's in there, but I may have missed it.

    57. @Ace2401
      Now you.
I want to re-clarify my review post. This time it will be much shorter (hah, me typing short posts). I can't remember everything I typed, so I'll just do a little bit, and leave it at that. First thing:

No I didn't read it on dA. I don't have a dA account, nor do I see it useful getting one. I can access age-restricted content my own way on dA without an account, and I'm no artist, so I have no need for an account. I did keep a bookmark on the dA group though. I'm using to keep up to date on the SP fics. I didn't even know Mind Delve was finished until I went there. I finished it Friday, and I'll put a review up tonight.

This is getting long. Now for Fluttershy's dad. What I said was "he's a good man, but a horrible father." What I meant here was Lance is both a good person, and a horrible person (pony). He's saved hundreds of lives, but he has ruined one (Has he? More on this soon). This is somewhat of a moral-ethical argument. It's hard to find a right or wrong. The utilitarian wouldn't bat an eye knowing Lance needs to abuse his daughter to stay sane enough to save lives. The Kantian would never allow him to abuse his daughter, and would say his good deeds don't even come into the argument (I think; Ethics class was a while ago). My opinion: I think he is a horrible pony, and should be punished for his actions, but his helpfulness to ponykind should not be forgotten.

Now for Fluttershy's punishment. She both deserved it, and didn't deserve it at the same time. She KILLED her mother even though she knew it was wrong in her mind. On the other hand, her mother was insane. She sort of manipulated Fluttershy to kill her by threat of punishment, and threatening with her love. My opinion again: I don't think her punishment was deserving, despite what she said. Her mother manipulated Fluttershy into killing her.

One more thing about her punishment. I do love how Fluttershy embraces her punishment. Even though I don't believe she deserved it, it's great she embraces it as a part of her life. She shows how without the punishment, she would've been completely different. She would've never met her friends, and would've never accomplished FlutterDash. Maybe without her abuse, she would've had a better life. We'll never know. We only know she wouldn't be the Fluttershy we know and love.

About your 4+ ending. Let's see, it's not fresh in my mind. At first I was a little annoyed that someone made a good ending out of what is supposed to be a sad ending. Fluttershy makes peace with her father as the best ending because he's the one who caused her pain. In the Ending 4, she feels she has not been punished enough for her actions (If I remember correctly). The purpose of Ending 4+ is so Rainbow Dash can reassure her that she is not at fault. By the time I was done reading it, I liked the ending. Like the best ending, Fluttershy is convinced (maybe) that she is not at fault for her mother's death. Unlike the best ending, she doesn't make peace with her father (which is important to the best ending), and she doesn't acquire the independence and motherly assertiveness essential to her closure. In the best ending, she grows a little while in this ending, everything simply goes back to normal. So in short, SP2 needed a good ending because there were several bad endings and one best ending. At least one alternate good ending is necessary.

      ReplyDelete
    58. Ah, now that SP2 is done, I promised I would answer my own scenarios.

      1. If I were suddenly thrust into a strange world that is my subconscious, I think I would do well. I would at first explore a lot, and look for any clues. Any monsters I would come across, I would run and hide. Only until I know their limitations, I would avoid them at all costs. I have an attention to detail, so I think I wouldn't pass over any clues to my subconscious, allowing me to get the best ending. Without knowledge of SH, I would probably live to learn my lesson.

      2. If I had been put into a world I instantly recognized as Silent Hill, I would panic a lot. First I would do whatever I could to wake my self up from this dream until I started bleeding (bang my head on a wall or something). Once I accept the truth, I would do my best to be a "trooper." I would use whatever I could use as a weapon, and like most FPS games, I would try to kill everything in my path to be sure nothing surprises me. The problem is, SH is formed around your subconscious, and will probably do what it can to weaken you. You can be really good with guns, and know kung-fu; that doesn't mean you'll be able to use those skills as well as you could in real life. I bet if I tried to kill everything, they would get stronger, or there would be more of them, and I would be overtaken by exhaustion. No doubt, I would be looking for anything out of the ordinary, and I would get far. I just don't think I would get past the hardest bosses due to the reason above. My active resistance to the world would get me killed. I would try too hard to finish the story, and learn the truth. Every Silent Hill has the character acting normal as themselves, and surviving through the world how they were supposed to.

    59. Oh geeze, I'm still not done. NOW onto Mind Delve. Not much of a review here, actually. Not much to say. To me, this story is more like an intermission. Good story. Short and sweet. It's good to know Twilight has no messed up memories. My biggest point here: Filly Twilight is adorable. I love how you wrote her. She reminded me of this comic:
      http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/09/comic-book-clones.html
Not the saucy aspect of it, just the face I imagined while she read in her fort was the one in this comic.

About Luna: Did you rewrite her after Nightmare Night came out? What kind of changes did you make other than her speech pattern? I'm also throwing out a warning for writing her. She stops using plural pronouns (we/us) halfway through the episode. Anytime before that is fair game. After, she acts quite normal. The warning is just so writers don't overuse and overplay her speech pattern (which has already run rampant). It's not a bad thing to use it, it's just risky.

Anyway, now that Mind Delve is over, I await Silent Ponyville 3. I'll be reading some other fiction until then. I might be reading the other Silent Ponyville stories. We'll see.

NOW TO COPY AND PASTE ALL OF THIS!

    60. A day later. I guess you're all still reading my mega-post. Well, news: I'm almost done with SH3. Once I'm done, I'll read a new story that ISN'T MLP fanfiction (my god; is it possible anymore?).

      ♫Guess what I found last night♪ (sing-song voice; Alt + 13&14)
      http://otakunoeiyaku.blogspot.com/2011/02/silent-hill-2-chapter-1.html

Ducky has finally finished the final chapter of her Silent Hill 2 novel translation! She even took the time to include screenshots in each chapter to help the reader visualize the scene. For a long time, the novel was only in Japanese.

What's best about the novel is the descriptions and how short it is. Most video game novels expand the story with lots of detail. This does the same, but not as much. There are only 6 rather short chapters (with pictures). I've skimmed through the story, and it doesn't skip any important parts. It holds the important (and even the less important) scenes, and trims out all of the running and gathering. Spoilers: The novel ends with the "In Water" ending. I sort of wish it ended with the best ending, but this is still the second best.

    62. @Equinenox

      Responding a day late lol.

I would kinda recommend a DA so you could join discussion of the SP fics there, as we have quite the community, but that's your choice. The reason I brought it up though was because if you'd have read it on DA you probably wouldn't have said that it's hard to hate Lance. SO MANY OF US HATE HIS GUTS and it shows in the comments. XD

Really, as far as Lance goes, he's committed one of the most terrible acts anyone could do (the act in question being child abuse) and he did it to a much beloved character with no real remorse. That's what makes him terrible in most everyone's eyes. Again, more people hate him with a passion than people hate the Colt from SP1 with a passion.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I have to say that Fluttershy deserved no punishment for her actions. She was the victim of her mother's death. She was too young to really understand what she was doing. I know you don't mean that she deserved what happened to her, but it hurts my soul to read she deserved anything other than love and kindness after what happened with her mother. That said, I too love how Fluttershy accepts what has happened to her and makes the best of herself, even if I disagree with her saying she deserved any of it. Fluttershy is best pony.

      >At first I was a little annoyed that someone made a good ending out of what is supposed to be a sad ending.

Sorry, but I have to say this in response to that: TROLLOLOLOLOLOLOL XD

In any case, I wrote it because ending 4 was so dang heartbreaking for me, and I wanted to feel better. I could of course only accept a result that was realistic and tied everything up nicely, and yet did not try to turn the worst ending into the best ending. I showed it to Jake, he liked it, and told me to post it as an official alternate ending. I was happy about that. XD

    63. Ah, finally finished Silent Hill 3. I guess I'm taking a long hiatus from fanfiction because I'm moving onto the Silent Hill 2 Novel (actually it's short). Once I'm done with that, I might read something else, or I may start Silent Hill 4.

      @Equinenox
I have a bit more on my scenarios. This regards #2. In the case that killing each and every monster doesn't make it harder for me, and I do make it to the end, I think my active focus on anything strange would get me a bad ending. In the 1st scenario, I said I have a strong attention to detail. I can spot things out of the ordinary. In the 2nd scenario, I would examine everything, even the unimportant, just to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Check out Shattered Memories, for example: If you stop to examine each and every object -- beer, pinball tables, or cigarettes -- when you should be looking for clues, you get a bad ending. Check 'em out.

Another possibility for the 2nd scenario is I would think of the world more like a dream that can be ignored or forgotten once beaten. In the 1st scenario, I would take everything seriously. Once I learn my lesson, I fully understand what I must do. Back to the 2nd: Once I learn my lesson, I would take it as another step closer to finishing this "game." We all say we'd be a trooper. We know there is something to be learned, and we would do whatever we could to get to the end. Once we reach it, have we learned anything? We know about Silent Hill, and how it works. We know there is something we need to learn when we enter it. Since we know about the world, we treat it more as a game to be beaten, and we get more of a disconnection from the truth when it happens. That is why I think previous knowledge of Silent Hill can be one's downfall.

Try to mull that over with your own scenario. Do you really think you would be an unstoppable, puzzle-solving, badass?

      @Ace2401
Now you again. I won't spend much time on debate. Look at my previous post again, as it describes my feelings. Each paragraph regarding Fluttershy's punishment and Lance's fate are in this format:

Side 1, Side 2, My opinion.

Calm down; I never said Lance deserves a second chance, or something like that. I said he should face his own punishment for his daughter. Abuse like that (nice job with it, Jake) makes him a terrible person (pony).

Regarding Fluttershy. Same story; read my post again. Side 1, side 2, my opinion. I'm merely stating 2 possible arguments, and then my own opinion. I'm not going to repeat anything, just re-read it.

      Finally about ending 4+.
      >At first
I'm pointing to this because it usually means it was my opinion "at first." That means my opinion changed. Read my post again. What I didn't say in my post was entirely why I was annoyed. I think this sad ending wrapped it up nicely. Every Silent Hill needs a sad ending. What I did say was how every ending was a bad ending except the best ending and silly endings. There is no "good-ish" ending. This is why I praised your ending. It provides the reader with not the best ending, but something we can still see happening.

    65. OK, finished reading Too Shy #2. You'll be disappointed if you expected another mega-review, from me. I don't think much for Shipping stories, but I do have one thing to say about it:

      D'awwwww

Other than that, my train of thought in the story was this: "Rainbow Dash, how can you be so cruel? Oh wait, what was the name of the story? OK, I know what is going to happen." Then it played out how I expected. Dash was raising money, as I expected. I momentarily came to Fluttershy's conclusion once she came out of Lyra and BonBon's. I then thought "Oh, she's probably moving stuff for them."

In short, the story played out the way I expected. The wedding was still pretty D'awwww, though.

New topic: Nice to see more stories popping up on EqD. I need to make a new folder for these side stories (hah, foalder). Congrats, Silent Hill and your stories have kept my attention for longer than I expected. I thought I'd read the Silent Hill 2 novel, but damn, I've already started playing Silent Hill 4: The Room.

I have no idea why people say Silent Hill 2 is the scariest game ever (sans Amnesia: The Dark Descent). SH2 is just depressing, and SH3 is mostly plot for the SH story arc. Silent Hill 4 is scary as shit (don't mind the language; I'm serious). Zombies (ghosts) climb out of the walls, and float at you. You can't kill them, and their mere presence causes damage to you. By far, SH4 is the scariest in the series (so far).

One last thing. Sooner or later, you'll read my review post for SP2. Once you get this far, I have a question. Do you need another spelling/grammar checker? I don't mean to insult you or your editors, but I see a lot of mistakes reading your work (and other's). I see the occasional sentence that can be reworded to not confuse the reader, and I see missing commas all of the time. I also see sentences ending in prepositions, but I don't correct them because the correction IS the confusing version (except one example in Too Shy #2 that I vaguely remember; I reread it 4 times to understand it). I focus on who/whom often, but the problem I see everywhere (about 12 instances in Too Shy 2) is further/farther.

I hope this doesn't sound insulting. I'm offering to go over a couple of your stories with a fine-grammar comb (as fine as I can get it). If you want to see what I can do first, I can start with Too Shy #2, and send you a doc file with my corrections. Once you give me the OK here, I can go about my work, and show you what I've got.

    67. Boy it's quiet in here. I think I'm done Playing Silent Hill for a long while. I actually finished Silent Hill 4 LAST NIGHT. Yep, I spent all day Friday and Saturday playing it nonstop. I take back Silent Hill 4 being the scariest. The ghosts are scary as hell for the first couple levels, but then they lose their scary. All of the other monsters suck; they're just ugly, and they make funny sounds. It was hard, but I got the best ending.

      @Jake Heritagu
Jake, you're going to need to catch up to these questions I'm throwing out. Start reading from your previous post; I only hope people don't skim through my mega-posts because I do put a lot of detail in my typing. Some things are easy to miss.

By the way, if you haven't read my other mega-posts recently, there is a Silent Hill 2 novel! The last chapter was translated a couple weeks ago. Read it! It doesn't have the best ending, but it sort of is the most canon. (James Sunderland disappears when he goes to SH2, so the "Leave" ending isn't entirely canon.)

I DO watch the dA page for updates every now and then, so don't worry about me missing anything. I'm practicing my drawing, so I may soon get a dA page, and join the #SP group.

Now I know how much you folks hate Lance, and how you hate seeing Fluttershy get abused. Well, I can't believe I missed it, but Jake was using an important plot device. I'm one of those guys who has spent over 1000 hours on TVTropes.org, and I see you have a SP page for it. Be sure to add "The Woobie" to the page.

      http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWoobie

Fluttershy is a good example of the Woobie. She is pushed through all of these hardships, abuse, and killing her mother. Up until Silent Ponyville, she is timid and weak (and adorable). After her realization, she is much stronger-willed. You all know the rest.

    69. Jake I have an idea dfor silent ponyville 3

The small filly sobbed as a mix of pain and fear overwelmed her. "I-I tried my best p-please don't hurt me!" she said fearfully to the strange shining pony, who she saw was holding a sewing needle. As she saw it walk closer through her tears she muffled her words. "p-please d-dd-don't hurt me!" but to no avail the pony came closer and then plunged the needle into the filly's leg.

Rarity awoke with a horrified scream. That was the last straw she thought, the nightmares had to stop.

    86. Don't get me wrong, I've been a massive fan of Silent Ponyville from the start. Our beloved monster, Jake, has demonstrated a command of the Silent Hill universe and concepts that rivals that of the design teams that worked on the later games and movies.

That said, I notice a huge leap in quality and audience discomfort in the latest episode of the mane storyline. Far as I'm concerned, this is a very good quality for a Silent Hill type thing! The mark of the games and the movie has been that, regardless of lore-marring, the audience was far from cozy and safe-feeling in their seats. This was exemplified, for instance, in the "letter" received, spying the pattern hidden therein... or the entire fight with the... uh... whatever it was that tried to eat Twi in the latest chapter.

Once again, I am reading well past my bedtime this morning. I will have unsettling dreams. And it will all have been worth it.

    90. Finished reading the first story and loved it. The chapters were overflowing with action. Pinkie faced danger after danger after danger. It looks as if a whole lot of ideas have been condensed into the span of a few chapters. There was no shortage of description here. The extent of the gore and horror was very clear. It’s pretty easy to imagine what monsters(or zombies?) must have looked like.
Initially, i found the events to be rather random and it didnt seem like there was any buildup of the plot at all. Like.. just seemingly random events happening. But i was glad to be proven wrong when i reached chapter 5. The linkup there was amazing. Its spectacular how that string of bizarre events can actually turn out to make sense, and monsters were manifestations linked to actual memories. The conclusion made me go like 'ooohh... i get it...' It also ended off with a slightly sad tone that sort of made the story touching. Overall, i think this is one of the more memorable fics i've read.

      anyway nice chapter as usual

      ReplyDelete
    101. Assassin's Creed? What? Where? I didn't see any AC references...
Anyways, I'm glad Twilight found somewhere (questionably, I don't trust Mr. Darkarts) safe to leave Spike, hopefully the pace will pick up a bit without her worrying about his safety. Also, you kept writing Spike in this chapter as being a bit too... I don't want to say too intelligent, Spike is a pretty smart cookie. But he was definitely being a bit, wordy I guess? A lot of his dialogue I thought Twilight was speaking at first, just because of the way it was written. It was a bit jarring.

Still, it was a fantastic chapter. Celestia's obviously invoked something different from what Twilight did via Mind Delves, what with meeting other ponies. Even if it is still following 'video game' rules, which I'm very glad Twilight caught onto, that's totally something she'd notice. Since Celestia seems to have brought Silent Ponyville to reality, as opposed to ponies going there via dreams, does that mean that that crucified pony was actually dead, and not just something pulled from Twilight's mind to unnerve her? D:

I'm also hoping that Dragon Merlin turned into an earth pony has some role in all of this. That idea is just plain interesting. Maybe Darkarts is a descendant? And speaking of Merlin, that scene with him speaking to Twilight gave OOOH I JUST GOT WHAT THE ASSASSIN'S CREED REFERENCE OTHERS WERE MENTIONING WAS. God I'm such a derp. Anyways, yeah, that scene gave me shivers.

    103. OK! I think I figured most of the monsters out!
May contain spoilers, read at own risk.

      PINKIE:

-The white fillies are a representation of her sister's body after The Colt was finished with her.

-The groaners... I honestly have no idea. Same applies to the giant pink monster.

-The Slender Pony (or Slender Mare) represents The Colt.

      FLUTTERSHY:

-Manequins... No idea what so ever.

      - The nurses are a manifestation of her father's head nurse.

-The dark creature is a representation of her father.

-The dragon represents her fear of dragons.
Tried my best to not spoil the story for anyone.

      ReplyDelete
    104. Hello again, folks.
I don't have much to say, actually. I'm liking the story so far.

When I started reading I thought "Oh god, he's doing The Room!" Twilight then opens the door, and I breath a sigh of relief. I'm guessing this all comes from Celestia's mind, so I can actually take a few guesses about what monsters are what.

I was bothered how Twilight can tell there are "rules" she must follow. I prefer when crossovers aren't so "blatantly obvious." I thought about it for a while, though. I thought back to the first two stories, and tried to find any "rules" that were obvious. I can't think about it right now. Anyway, I'm seeing it less and less of a bad thing. Twilight is quick-witted, and I shouldn't be surprised when she spots things like that. Oh, and that's a clever in-universe way of justifying hammerspace.

Something good: The depressing scene of the crucified pony was very well described. I could very well see what was happening, and I felt Twilight's pain. I guess the pony was clever enough to get out of her house, and thought she was more clever than the "rules."

Last thing: Are you sure you don't need someone to check your grammar? I see so many missing commas that would go unnoticed anyway, but I feel I must fix them!
