Stereoscopic Derpy

Fillies and gentlecolts- I present to you stereoscopic Derpy.

Click the image for the full size. The effect doesn't work as well with the thumbnail. Trust me, I tried. If you're not sure how to use this image, after the break you can find some instructions in image form.

Cheaters can find the image way below the break.

You dirty cheaters, here you go.

One easy way to do this, is if you have a Nintendo 3DS, just have the camera adjust it for you, and look at the top screen. It usually works!!!

Anonymous said...

I get it now. I noticed the eyes. Pretty awesome stuff.

Anonymous said...

Ugh. STILL amn't seeing anything.

Anonymous said...

Not bad, but you can't really tell what it is if you don't already know. SO, if someone ran into to this out of nowhere, even the most knowledgeable brony would have trouble guessing what it is at first. You can definitely tell it's a pony head but it looks like Rainbow Dash till you notice the eyes, if you do.

Magic eyes are cool though. So I like this.

Also, how I do them:

1.Lean in till your nose is almost touching the page/screen

2. DO NOT FOCUS YOUR EYES ON THE IMAGE. Instead stare straight ahead so that the image remains blurry

3. Pull back slowly, do not blink or look around, DON'T adjust your eyes too look at the image as it appears or you'll lose it.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous

lol'd

PinkieGuy said...

What you need to do is try to get your eyes to focus as if you were looking at something behind the picture. What helps me is putting my face right up to the picture at first, that way I am forced to lose focus on it. It seems to be a lot easier with the thumbnail than the full picture though.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous(with the method of how to do it)
Yay! I think I found her eyes!

Anonymous said...

CAN'T SEE SHIT, CAP'N

Anonymous said...

I finally see Derpy's face. It's the first time I've ever been able to see these things.

It's a little hard to explain what to look for if you have never been able to see pictures in these things before. When you get it right, it looks like your looking at two flat surfaces in 3d. The rear surface is just the solid background of that green pattern you see. The second surface looks like it is an inch or two closer, and has the same pattern, but looks like it has holes in it or parts missing in the shape of Derpy's face. I don't know if that helps at all.

Anonymous said...

Um... I'm about to give up. XD

Anonymous said...

Oh, it's her head. Took me a while, but it does work !

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous

Forgot a crucial part!

When you lean in, stare at the spot directly in front of your eyes but don't focus on it.

I know that sounds confusing but, you just have to look at it while it's blurry. If the image clears up when you look at then you're doing it wrong. Just look at one blurry spot for about 10 seconds then pull out slowly while still looking at that spot, don't blink or look away.

It's much easier to do than it sounds and it's much simpler to do than explain.

Anonymous said...

Bleh. This is impossible to do on a netbook.

Anonymous said...

Holy shit, that was awesome!
Can I get this without Derpy on it?
I was totally able to merge the image and it was so cool, though all I saw was a 3D 2D flat plane if you get that xP. I noticed some irregularities which I guess was supposed to be the Derpy image, maybe if I re-focus on that. I've never believed these images worked before today :O

I've seen a few of things like this in books but this one seems a bit more difficult. I guess it's because its on a monitor.

Thattagen said...

Ow. My eyes. It's not healthy to stare at your computer screen with your face so close...

I could never see these things as a kid, but I think I got a breakthrough this time. I could notice some irregularities which might have been the picture, but they never really formed into Derpy for me.

I SEE IT! I SEE IT! its impossible to outline it because both your eyes need to bring the image together. It's derpy's face turned 3/4 to the right and her eyes are derped inwards.

Anonymous said...

MAGIC EYE!
I remember the first time I managed to see one of these...God, how scary. Good times, good times.

Fluttershy said...

Hmm, I can see a pony face, but I can't see her eye sockets. Does look like Derpy though, even though I am unable to Derp my eyes I just... I don't know.

Anonymous said...

Wow I love these. Moar!

Anonymous said...

YES!YES! This is the first time I've been able to see anything on one of these. This must be. The power. OF DERPY HOOVES!

Duskfly said...

Yes! I did it! I see Derpy! Wahoo!

Took me a while to achieve this. My derpy eyes were a bit rusty but I managed to get it.

The Key is not to stare at one focal point. Been doing that and it doesn't work. Instead try doing this:
If you're able to cross your eyes as you stare at your nose, trying doing the same to the image. If you can't, practice this by taking your index finger and slowly moving it towards your nose while you have both eyes focused on the finger. Now, pretend your nose is right in between your eyes. Do this as you stare at the image (make sure you have a full view of the image first). You should get a double image of the stereoscopic. Once you got this, retract your eye vision and you should be able to get a view of Derpy.

It actually works better if you relax your eyes. Like, try to imagine looking at something far off in the distance.

The image of Derpy is pretty big, so I suggest scrolling to the bottom, because that's where her face is (the top is her hair).

Max said...

All the "Move slowly away from the computer screen" are really hard to do. Here's the easy way to do it. Just find something behind your computer screen, and try to look at it THROUGH your computer screen. Or even easier, try to look at something reflected in your computer screen. Once the image starts to jump out at you, try (carefully) to focus on it.

Also, it's only Derpy's head. Took me forever to figure out what I was looking at, thought her hair was some sort of wing.

Ewyndall said...

I never had a problem with these before and frankly I got the picture out of this aswell in like,
10 seconds flat :) I'm good with these, I can usualy get the picture in a few seconds.

Now identifying what I see, that has always been a problem XD
First I thought this is a pegasus with huge wings, leaning her head down on the right side of the picture haha.

Anyways, got it now.

If you need advice seeing the pic, I do this: relax your eyes and don't try to focus your vision at all. Get in the state when everything loses its edge and the picture becomes blurry. In that moment you should see the hidden image, vaguely and that's the very moment when you suddenly focus on a single spot on the picture.

That's how I do it at least.

Anonymous said...

I love these. :D

Anonymous said...

Harder to get it down on a computer screen, but it's easier to keep it there once you get it... strange.

Anonymous said...

I think I'm sort of seeing it, but my layers are backwards because I can't seem to do it the way you're supposed to. I'm seeing some layers and 3-D ness but it doesn't look like anything.

I've done these before though so I know that I can do them, but for some reason this one's not working.

Anonymous said...

Oh, it's a sailboat.

Anonymous said...

After further experimantation , I see what I'm seeing, but yeah, I do it crosseye, not walleye (or is it the other way around?) so all the layers are backwards so it doesn't look right to me. :P

Anonymous said...

This is approximately the shape I see. If you see shapes that are not this, you aren't doing it right. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v203/Sygmus/derpy_shape.jpg

Anonymous said...

got it easy enough.. A bit of a possible stumbling block is the base pattern has a bit of a half-step repetion.. so I ahd to go deeper to get it to focus.

Anonymous said...

instructions for stereoscopic images are always so... horrible. ive got a better set:
pick two flowers that look exactly the same on the same line, cross your eyes and try to line up these two flowers, eventually the flowers will lock into place and your eyes will focus in a weird way, making the image pop out.

Anonymous said...

Ok, I can't cross my eyes, just kind of wiggle them. so i've never really gotten these... what is it?

Anonymous said...

It's a sail-boat XD

Knil Adlez said...

If you're having trouble getting it to work, try staring at a reflection in your monitor. It worked for me.

Hoshi said...

I actually have Derpy Hooves-esque eyes in real life (by way of strabismus) and I have never once been able to do these stereoscopic images. (I can hardly enjoy 3D movies either.)

It really does feel like such a tease sometimes, especially this time with a stereoscopic image of Derpy...! >_<

Anonymous said...

@Hoshi
I used to be squint-eyed but I had an operation for it when I was like 5. They lengthened my eye muscles to stop them from spazzing out all the time, but I haven't been able to go cross-eyed since.

Anonymous said...

Annoyingly enough, this requires making your eyes go wall-eyed, not cross-eyed. So misleading.

Filiecs said...

I DID IT I DID IT... woah, my eyes be trippin derps man...

Anonymous said...

I remember doing these as a kid, but usually when I do these I have trouble unless I know what I'm looking for--at first I thought I was supposed to see Derpy's body.
It wasn't until I used the thumbnail that I saw what I was supposed to see.
This is very nice, brings back memories.

LoneWolf said...

Wow now that’s a blast from the past :-) When were these things popular, early to mid 90s IIRC? Nice to see one of those images again :-)

@Everpony having trouble seeing the image:
Try one of these images first:

http://web.mit.edu/bcs/schillerlab/research/A-Vision/A12-4.html
http://stereo.victorovich.com/show.php3?page=theory

Notice those two dots in the upper part of the picture? They are there to teach you the correct technique for viewing these kind of pictures. You need to focus a point behind the monitor and move you head back until instead of two points, you see three points (The second link gives a better explanation of this). You then have the correct distance to the image, and just need to wait a view seconds to see the image.

Apply the same technique to the derpy image and you’ll see her (the distance you need to find is different from image to image, but the technique is the same). It’s only the head btw, it definitely helps if you know what you’re looking for.

Anonymous said...

I can see SOMETHING... yes, it is Derpy's head... but I can't really make out her eyes. They look messed up. (By messed up I mean that it looks like a circle with a fat line through it.)

It's even harder since I can only derp one eye. :(

Anonymous said...

Here's how you derp this.

1. Do what Anon at 4:12 said. I used the red flowers. With them, there's a high one, then a low one, then a high one again. Line up two consecutive high ones. The fact that the image iterates itself will allow your eyes to focus, but the pattern will be seen to be at a different depth because the angle that your eyes focus with to see it will be different. You're basically shifting the pattern one unit over onto itself. The depth you see it at will be well behind the computer moniter.

2. Once you can do this, and you've gotten used to it, you'll notice some patches of blurriness where you can't look without losing focus. That's because there are two levels to the picture: There's a background which seems like a wall, and it's farthest back. Derpy is the other level, and you can see her because she appears to be raised up from the background. If you started by focusing your eyes near the center of the picture, then the part you have in focus is derpy's head. For it to make sense, you have to get the background part in focus in just the same way as you already have derpy's head. It's only hard because they seem to be at two different depths. To achieve it, I recommend finding a convenient boundary between the two layers, and switching your focus back and forth between them, so your eyes and brain get used to the idea of two layers. Once you can get the layers both in focus at once, you should be able to sweep your eyes across the screen at will without losing focus, and derpy will be yours.

Anonymous said...

@Kyle

Same. I don't get why people need these multi-step guides, I just cross my eyes until the repeating patterns line up. If anything, the thumbnail's easier to interpret because the details are closer together.

Lolstaz said...

at times like these it sure sucks to be the guy who's already cross-eyed and only sees with one eye at a time

Anonymous said...

I don't see shit.

Anonymous said...

I wish there was an easy way of inverting the depth information in these. More or less every one I see requires the wall-eye method, while I can do both, the cross-eye method is so much easier to do and you're less likely to lose the effect while you're looking around at the details.

Anonymous said...

At first I was like ''WTF'' but then I-- DERP.

HereticalRants said...

I see it, and it's an outline of *something,* but I don't see how that's Derpy.

Anonymous said...

WAIT. I figured out what's wrong, I expected the image to turn into a High-rez, fully grey-and-yellow colored picture of Derpy. All you get is a weird ouliney thing.

Confound these ponies! They drive me to derp.

ph00tbag said...

Stereoscopy is magic.

pmcollectorboy said...

Cross-eyed is the final defense of those who just have a hard time. I find I get the best results by going back and forth between cross-eyed, and the TRUE method, which is to imagine a distant horizon in your computer screen and behind the image. I call this the "glassy stare method". Whatever works for you, but these things are wicked cool. Some stereoscope images that utilize the cross-eyed method provide an assist by having three dots on the top of the picture and have you trying to merge them into two dots. We don't get such a luxury with this one.

Timesoda said...

Wow, I never expected to get THIS many comments on it. I may do more later.

Me: I can't do this...

Him: Do what?

Me: This picture thing. Cross your eyes to see the picture, and it's supposed to be Derpy...

Him: . . .That doesn't work because it's not real - and the joke is, if you cross your eyes, you will look like Derpy Hooves.

Me: O O; . . .You're right. . .I look like Derpy. . .

I am so glad I am good at these. I love my 3DS, I love my side by side stereo images, and these stereograms are nifty too.

I've been playing with stereoscopic imagery for around half a decade. Before then, I could never do these stereograms, but I started playing with the side by side images and once I trained my eyes to disassociate focus from parallax, I found I was suddenly able to do stereograms!

I can hone in on the edge of the stereo shape depicted in these types of images in only 1-3 seconds. Once I find it, i can flip the effect on and off at a rate of about one flip per second.

I am quite proud of that ability...

but seeing as how there is no one else in my head to share my skill with, it kinda just makes me suddenly sad. I can't show it to anyone...

Pinkie Pie must never be lonely... well, maybe that sourpuss Pinkamena Diane Pie might be one to ignore, but I bet all the friends and voices in her head make every day happy and joyful and exiting for her! :D

FWIW, this is a wall-eyed image, not cross eyed. If you view it cross-eyed, you get a "Jell-o" mold of the image. If you view it wall-eyed (focusing beyond the image- try staring at your reflection in the monitor), the image will pop out/forward.
