@Cony the Pony they had the storyboards done for the first few episodes, but not the animation. Animation only starts once the storyboards are finalized and they are absolutely sure they like the story for the episode.
Glorious news! Although, will they only air the finished episodes when all episodes are finished or will they air them as they are completed? Preferably the latter, though I am skeptical of that.
Can everyone knock off the 'first' crap? It isn't cool, funny or interesting, it's just stupid youtube shit, you contribute nothing to the comments.
Timline (roughly):
1. writing process
2. storyboards
3. animation (ponies & such)
4. VA
5. Re-animation (mouth movements according to the VA)
6. Composing (can't have Pinkie singin' w/o music!)
7. final edits
8. Release
considering the animation is done in flash, the process will take faster than a normal cartoon, so the show should be out by early-to-mid fall
though, this is just my interpretation of what it would take

Voice acting is done before storyboarding, and I'm pretty sure songs are done earlier on, too. There have been updates on some of the VA's public pages (Facebook, Twitter) that they had already gone in for recording a long time ago.
The composing of the background music might be more post-production, though.
Great news! I just want to say how awesome it is that the show's creators are keeping us in the loop when events like this happen. It really makes us feel like a part of it.

Yeah, back in April they were doing storyboarding, and I'm guessing they just finished with layout.
Keep in mind the episodes will all still need sound effects and the background musical score in post-production.
I think Mr. Thiessen was correct in that we won't see any new episodes until fall. I'm still guessing September or October. :)
And so we all wait patiently for the Empire Strikes Back to come out, eagerly clutching our A New Hope merch and toys, hoping it'll be the same.

I seem to recall something about them having made 28 episodes for the first season, but two of them being held back to air during the second season instead of the first.

I think they start airing when 60%-70% of the episodes are done. Remember how for the first, like, 16 episodes Derpy was normal and after that she returned to idiocy? They made that AFTER people responded to the original mistake with her eyes.
If this is how excited people here get when they announce that they have started the animation process, I can't wait to see the reactions when the show is done. I'm expect a few minds to be blown.
@Heartmend ...why would the voice actors do their thing -before- the storyboards are done? They want to get the story down pat -before- committing their voices. If there's a change to the story.....yeah, the VA's most likely have different things to say.

Well the voice acting will be done if they're starting animation. And from what I hear there's gonna be about 26 episodes again this season. When I worked on episodes of a cartoon we tended to finish all of them before they aired but with Depry being commented on it seems Studio B and whoever else is animating this works differently.
When I worked on a show we'd usually do all the initial animation in about 2 weeks, (sometimes 1) and would send it to the Studio that hired us. Then they would get back to us with corrections that needed to be done of selected scenes which would take about another week.
Post production usually worked with us in tandem but I'm an animator so I'm unaware of their exact work schedule.
We weren't in charge of soundtrack or SFX though so I'm not so sure about the time span that needs.
....I'm still a newbie animator XD;;
I'm still guessing we'll start seeing episodes around October though, not before.

Though, I don't expect it as soon as some fellow bronies seems to do. I expect the first episode of season 2 to air in late october, earliest.
When I was in a VA workshop (back when I wanted to be a VA), I heard that sometimes a performance can influence the look so they want those first when they can get it.
There's a moment in episode 2 when Twilight hesitates (thinks) before saying "spark" during her explanation to Nightmare Moon. I have a feeling that was one of those moments, and it resulted in another silly face from Twilight. Yay.

The time it takes will vary based on the size and efficiency of the animation team. Unfortunately I haven't had the benefit of seeing one of these teams in action firsthand, so I can't exactly say how long it'll take. I think seven seconds a week per animator is a reasonable assumption, being that they're using symbol sets.

I would have thought storyboards would be done before, too!
I'm only going by what I've read from those who work on the show. (I know Mr. Thiessen was reviewing storyboards as early as March 29th, and as late as May 15th.) The script is finished first, then VA (and I think songs), then storyboards, layout, animation, etc. :)
