I'm thinking I'll get my hands on a 3d printer later this year. There are definitely going to be the first things I make.

Hasbro fucks up making the mane 6 toys enough already, God only knows what kind of monstrosities they would come up with if they attempted any of these

Some of those 3d ponies look really amazing :)

Terraria, so amazing!

If only those 3D models were actually toys

Pinkamena's smile unnerves me, but aside from that, these models are godly awesome, usually I'd worry about articulation, but here, I don't even care, they could just be solid resin statues and I'd buy 'em.

Seriously Hasbro, you're a toy company, the MLP cartoon is primarily intended to generate interest for your toys this is truly getting to be beyond a joke.

If they ever made a Sapphire Shores or DJ Vinyl Scratch, I would be the happiest Brony in the world... ಢ u ಢ

Whoever made those models needs to head over to www.shapeways.com

Well, Hasbro? You clearly have no more excuses. You could very easily make the ponies more show-accurate, so what's holding you back?

I looked up a website called shapeways. if you send them a 3d model, they can use a 3d printer to make it. perhaps have these prototyped and painted?

Bronies have more disposable income than 5 year old girls. In fact, some of us have graduated, have good jobs (and no drug habits) so we're lucky enough to have stacks of cash we enjoy spending on funny stuff like figures and toys

I'm still waiting for a truly accurate, beautiful set of mane 6 figures. Something like Japanese Hatsune Miku figures in terms of quality.

I have 1000 dollars (more, if you make me a giant Rarity plushie) with your name on it, Hasbro, why won't you take it???

I guess Hasbro figures they can go cheap-ass on the fans and know no one will really care enough to say anything. This severely backfires when your target audience (little girls who are much less likely to voice complaints about the quality toys) ends up not being the bulk of the audience. I doubt Hasbro thought they would be held accountable for the quality of their products. Adult males are an enormous part of the fanbase, and they WILL make their discontent known, which is probably what Hasbro was hoping to avoid.

Due to a variety of factors (actual design, IP/legal work, child safety compliance, manufacturing, etc.) it normally takes right at approximately a year from when Hasbro begins designing a product to when it is first available for purchase. Also, until a design reaches a certain point, they cannot allow the product to be seen or used by the public, or they loose some of their rights in it. Assuming they started work on high quality products that we're asking for back when FiM first started getting popular, it would be early next year before any of those products would be available and the earliest they'd be seen would likely not be until around September or October.

@ Drax

Yaah, some browsers cause that. Mine does the same thing. You just need to fix the code.

I'm working on a brand new comment system, (The same one CNN/Wired use) so hopefully that fixes everything.

@Anonymous Actually, they do have an excuse. Being an engineering student studying manufacturing processes, these 3D models would be a nightmare to mass-produce (no pun intended). They are too intricately detailed to be made from any sort of plastic mold in one piece. I think the only thing they could do to make these on any sort of useful production scale would be to have kidrobot make non-posable figurines like what was done for the Gorillaz figurines. Rapid prototyping is good for exactly that, quickly making a handful of prototypes without investing in all of the necessary tooling and molds needed for a true production line. It's too expensive and takes too long to justify using rapid-prototyping techniques for mass-production.

Also, it should be noted that 3D printed models have somewhat rough surfaces because it can only print at so fine a resolution. If you wanted it printed in full color, the only way to do so results in a model made of what would feel like sandstone.

I must be the only one who noticed that the back of Pinkamina's mane is invisible from the front, and visible from the back. What dark magic is this?!

Adrian Brony said...

@Anonymous
some of the newer 3d printing is smoother, plus hthere's always the option of having a smoother resin printed then painted in a separate process.

Anonymous said...

True dat about the 3d printing! I've sanded 3d models professionally, and it takes forever. But it seems to me that G1 ponies at least had more detail than the ones being released now. All they need to do is hire a better sculptor. What I'd really, really like to see is pony toys with separate poses for each character, which seems easy, since each character has images of them in specific poses that the company already uses. Oh, and bigger ponies would be great!

Also if the artist were to, say, upload these to www.thingiverse.com, we could download and print or send them into Shapeways.com ourselves...

Those models are just perfect.

I'm rather surprised Phoe's not all over this post, what with Lyra heading the heard and Phoe being the resident Lyraologist...

Maybe making structurally sound dolls based off of these models is a pipe dream, but it seems that with just a little modification, they can be turned into fully poseable 3D models for animation.

Anonymous said...

and no-one says anything about the sprite art below my house on the brony server? Derp.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous

Who are you on the server? (DJ-P0N3 from the server here)

Also there is a gummy statue that is almost done.

I'm actually working on a conversion mod to make all the sprites in Terraria MLP:FiM :3

If only Hasbro would stop sucking with their distribution/depiction of characters/making more toys :(

Hashbro said...

Wow, made the Equestria Daily news. :D
Thanks guys!

I'm glad everyone likes the models, I'll make more ponies as soon as I get some time.

3d printing was the whole reason why I made these.
Right now I'm fixing up the Pinkamena mesh so I can have them printed at shapeways.
If I'm happy with the result I will make them aviable for purchase, but please keep in mind that it's not possible to have them printed with colors.

I'm also working on a rig so I can basically pose them and print them anyway I want.
