Um. I am not sure why I am OK with this.
I should get my brain checked.
I have written pokemon fanfiction before, I can tell you now if humans are involved, there will be a lot of balls thrown at the ponies if they are trying to be pokemon trainers. (Plus pokemon is one of the easier types of fanfiction to write, unfortunately this involves massive amounts of OCs which pony people here tend to despise for whatever reason. All that despite the leeway writing a pokemon story gives you for coming up with whatever mythology you want.)
Besides not all Pokemon have to fight, some are used for construction, dig sites, weather control, electricity and basically anything ponies do already with their world. (Rainbow Dash with flying type Pokemon for weather control Ect.)
Also Earth Ponies evolve with the sun stone into Pegasus Ponies or with the moon stone into Unicorn Ponies.
