Valve Pops Pony Puns All Over Their New Update

I love you valve. I love everything today though. This episode was amazing.

Thanks to person in my email for pointing this out - who only left his real name!

Apparently someone on the Valve team (Or maybe multiple people maybe?) has been bitten by the pony bug.

You can find the link to it below!

Im not sure this counts or not...

Somehow I feel this has nothing to do with MLP... TF2 has a Texan (The Engineer) who recently "wrote" a blog post... and those pony puns are pretty generic.

Nng... Saw this on Ponychan lastnight. It honestly doesn't strike me as a reference to My Little Pony ponies. Rather, it just took the common term "one trick pony" and ran with it.

Anonymous said...

Is this actually a reference to MLP at all, or just some random thing?

Anonymous said...

Id say it its a pony reference. There are quite a few tf2 pony servers, "Legion of ponies" and others. Even on non brony matches you can see a few pony sprays around. Few players seem to be hostile to the pony.

Anonymous said...

MLP didn't invent the word Equestrian. One trick pony is a phrase that has existed at least for decades.

Anonymous said...

◦Added new "Sort by Rarity" option for sorting backpack items.

This means the items by Rarity not that Rarity the pony will sort through them.

Anonymous said...

Not a reference to MLP, move along, these are common sayings.

Anonymous said...

This wasn't an MLP reference.

Batty Gloom said...

Totally not a MLP reference.

You know what that means.

Bronies need to try harder! We have a patch that turns The Engineer into Applejack, so how about a patch that turns The Spy into Rarity? Or a patch that turns the Scout into Rainbow Dash?

Don_ko said...

Sort by Rarity makes it all complete. Rarity with a big R. No mistake. My bode wasn't ready and now it's dead. ))))) I love Valve!

I WANT TO BELIEVE

thiiiiis is pushing it

I have that weird feeling ponies already existed before MLP ever saw the light of day...

Don_ko said...

but 2 potential references in one place.

Actually, Soldier has a Pony thing in his voice clips. And that was before FiM.

"Equestrian training manuals"

HOW DID I MISS THAT?!

Anonymous said...

Am I the only one who noticed that THERE WILL BE NO FRIGGING HATS IN THIS UPDATE! ARE YOU CRAZY?

Don_ko said...

They already added lot of hats several days ago.

Guys. Guys. I saw a horse today in the side of the road. That was TOTALLY A REFERENCE TO MLP.

*Facehoof*

What's next, the 2012 apocalypse was foretold by the Great and Powerful Trixie through the number of rounds a Heavy's weapon fires per minute multiplied by the number of eyeballs left in a demoman?

Let's not start seeing references that most sure aren't there.

Don_ko said...

I saw a horse today too! In 1 meter from me! =O

Batty Gloom said...

Okay, everyone made their point; no need to keep hammering it in. Everyone makes mistakes; I think Sethisto is entitled to a few. Let's just forget about this and move on before things get ugly.

9Nine9 said...

Too be honest, don't you have to type "I like ponies" into steam when you're making your account to prove you're human?

I mean really.

Resstarr said...

@9Nine9

Steam was put out long, LONG before FiM aired or was even greenlit.

Roan Berg said...

@Anonymous
Yeah, but why would they use that particular version of the phrase?
I've practically only heard the phrase as horse, as opposed to pony. In fact, I've heard it referring to other animals more often than said subset of horse. Combine that with the use of an uncommon word used often in the show for wordplay, and the fact that MLP:FiM has been prevalent as hell all over the net, and it starts to look a lot less like a coincidence and far more like something they intended.

9Nine9 said...

@Resstarr
HURDURR yes I've been using steam since 08.

But the confirmation phrase is the change, as berg said.

Herpaderp.

Anonymous said...

@Roan Berg

Different anon here, but I've never heard it in anything but "One Trick Pony" format. Probably a regional thing as to how it's used.

But yeah, this just looks like seth got a bit over-excited and started seeing things that weren't there.

Anonymous said...

I think it's a big stretch to call this an MLP reference. None of the terms or jokes made here originated from the show.

Anonymous said...

Today was absolutely amazing! We've got one of the most amazing MLP episodes EVER! Then I got to talk to the girl of my dreams, and then I find out about THIS??? OH MY LITTLE PONY TODAY IS AWESOME!

Fire.Esper said...

I *ALMOST* submitted that, but...

1)Sometimes a pony is just a pony. Usually it's horses that do tricks, but...
2)"Equestrian" is a real word, meaning to do with horse training. That's where "Equestria" comes from.
3)I'd be shocked if Valve DON'T know about MLP and DON'T have a few bronies in their ranks. They're not exactly social outcasts, and not exactly without free time.

Fire.Esper said...

@Fire.Esper Also, apparently ex-Murray folk are very much busy writing things for Valve indeed.

"TF2’s now hooked up to Steam's new SILK audio codec, which dynamically adjusts bandwidth demands for superior internet audio. Listen to people around the world call you horrible things with crystal clarity."

Anonymous said...

doesn't seem like a MLP reference. After all, these ponies wear hats.

Anonymous said...

Look, this isn't a MLP reference, but this is the TF2 guys. Trust me when I say they KNOW their players. It's no secret that a good part of the TF2 fanbase is into MLP as well, just look at all the crossover pics/videos. I would not be surprised if the TF2 team just threw these ponies in there just for us.

NO NEW HATS IN A TF2 UPDATE
THE END IS NEIGH

@Anonymous
I laughed harder than I should have at that comment.

If you look through the entire thing, they make 3 pony-related puns. The first is the one screen capped, the second is 'Added new "Sort by Rarity" option for sorting backpack items'. I do not believe that Rarity is capitalized in game, so it may be referencing to the pony. Also, they say "Uhhh, sure. Now pass those sequins" at the front page, at the bottom paragraph. Now, it seems pretty coincidental, but who knows? Also, typing "I like Ponies" is what you sometimes have to type to verify you're human on spuf forums.

Anonymous said...

Of actual relevance, someone has done a Applejack Engineer skin. Search it up on Facepunch to download it and put it in your game.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous
Huh? What screencap? I'm looking through the images but can't see anything pony-related.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous
Well, shit. I'm a dumbass.
Anyhow, Rarity capitalized can't be coincidental.

Roan Berg said...

I'd actually like to point out that the point they were trying to convey would have been more effectively stated by dispelling the "can't teach an old dog new tricks" phrase, but instead they went out of their way to do something pony related. Just tacking that on to my previous point.

Anonymous said...

Fuck TF2

Anonymous said...

@Batty Gloom:

Or a patch that turns headcrabs into parasprites!

Sethisto said...

It's just fun to speculate, no need to explode!

Anonymous said...

It's definitely ponies! It's ALL gone PONIES!!! They're EVERYWHERE!

Anonymous said...

I'm going to vote that it's not a reference to MLP.

Anonymous said...

This blog is so derp.

And by derp I mean retarded.

And by retarded I mean it's incredibly stupid that this is so popular. (the blog I mean)
