tbh, I think this is better than Rainbow Crash's chiptunes. Not that his are bad -- they're just fairly basic, and this has more depth and complexity to it.

Rainbow Crash makes 8-bit NES styled tunes. Chiptunes are made using a different sound chip.

      NES Music =/= Chiptune Music

Chiptune is a rather wide blanket term. Both the NES's 2A03 and Amiga's Protracker music easily fall under it, among other forms of music (such as the ever-prevalent Yamaha FM synth from the PC-98, Megadrive, NES's VRC7, Soundblaster, etc.)

That said, good to be seeing some new stuff from Zorg.

Of course they're not the same. I never suggested they were, I just said that zorg's music is more detailed.

If you want to hear some really kickass chiptunes that bring a LOT of depth from just 4 channels, look up virt. THAT is how you do NES-style. Crash is just plopping down the basic notes and pressing the mp3 button.

    8. This is pretty interesting. I think I like it. Well, other than the fact that it's so blasted loud that it's overdriving my poor laptop's speakers, but hey.

    9. it doesnt matter what "kind" of music it is, this is just a really bad song. i cant even really put my finger on why it's bad, it just has a really awful sound.

rainbow crash's music is way better because it accomplishes a few things:

      1) they are good songs. they are fun to listen to and have a great sound
      2) they sound like gameboy songs (he uses a gameboy and i think something else to produce the music), that is to say they sound like they would be right at home when you popped in a gameboy game and turned it on.
      3) they follow the show's songs well! that's not always necessary, after all there's lots of great remixes out there, but they sound very close to the show and i like that a lot.

this, though? this is just... ugh. it's really bad.

    10. actually, if i had to be specific, it sounds like it's trying NOT to be a chiptune. it would probably sound far, FAR better with traditional instruments. it almost sounds like somebody used an automatic conversion program to turn a good remix into a shitty "chiptune" mix.

the basic style is there, but it's ruined by poor instrument choice

    11. morning.
      cool comments broskis.

i admit that i suffered a bit with this one (and with winter wrap up too, which i'm working on). It's hard to make them sound... fine enough.

also, i call my stuff chiptunes because rainbow crash calls his ones 8-bits. GBA (not even NES, i think they use different chips) vs amiga. (he uses lsdj iirc, and i use openmpt, but whatever)

as for instruments, i just hand draw the waveform most of the time, so if i don't like it, i just modify it while the song's going.
and yes, aim was to make it sound complex enough, but still avoid using "real" instruments. and no, i'm working by ear, no conversion apps used. (also i don't know of any existing mp3->it ones that aren't shitty)

also, the 4 channel limitation is just a limit i put on myself. that many should be enough, that's why i won't increase it. one for "vocals", another for drums, and 2 for anything that can make them sound better like bass or arps or anything else.

      short version: preferences and tastes.

    12. also, feel free to mess around with the .it file i linked, if you think you can manage to make it sound better, then feel free to try.
that's one reason i provide it, besides the fact that i like to watch the notes being played visually. :3

    13. Please don't argue guys, I really like zorgs chiptune stuff, mine and his are just different styles is all. He makes the Demo scene style tracks, I make them as if they are from an MLP game for the Gameboy. Different styles, Different techniques, I'm sure we both put as much effort into them as each other.

      All the best

    14. sorry if i came off as argumentative. i was simply trying to articulate why i disliked the song rather than just posting "shit song loser. 1 star" and moving on. i like to try and give critique if at all possible

your music, RainbowCrash, just sort of happened to be in the same genre, and i thought the comparison might be useful. again, so sorry if i came off as a jerk in any way. that was not my intention.

besides, you can only get better with practice, right? keep doing what you like no matter what some chump on the internet says
