The sheriff and the chief were both typical politicians--ignore the people trying to be reasonable and rational about the situation and just spew rhetoric about how we're right and the others are wrong.
"Okay, let's figure this out--how much of the disputed land do you actually need for your sacred stampede, and how much do YOU actually need for the apple orchard?" "ALL OF IT!" "ALL OF IT!" "*sigh*"
I thought that mushy stuff the Buffalo were eating was going to play some part in the ending. Like the Appleloosian's wouldn't need a full apple orchard because they could have supplemented their diet with what the Buffalo ate, thus leaving some open land for the buffalo to do their ceremonial running on.
I loved this episode. I can see that the sheer nonsense level of it all would bug people, but the show does some of its best stuff for me when its absolutely bonkers, and this episode was just that. Completely defeated all of my expectations.

Y know. sometimes the natives have no idea what to do with the land. mexicans always gripe the US stole california & Texas but given their present history and corrupt culture do you really think they could have prospered like Americans?
By your logic, countries should invade each other because some of them "have no idea what to do with their land". People who think like you died hundreds of years ago.
Self determination is a good thing. It's also pretty arrogant to assume that one culture is superior to another, especially when you use technology as the metric to determine a cultures worth.
Luckily the society of the ponies is a fairly idealistic near utopia, so rather then completely displace an indigenous people they come to terms with them peacefully. No blankets with pony pox being sent to buffaloes or anything like that.
Only seen the first half so far, but wow... Dashie?
I can't believe the writers gave Pinkie her own pet name for Rainbow, lol. That's both hilarious and awesome; it's almost like they know what we want, lol. Though I'm sure this show will never tackle romance (especially same sex relationships), they sure seem to be going as far as they can with the hints sometimes, lol.
How about these two fic-people arguing just write a fic together. Maybe you'll balance each other out, and... Friendship will happen or something. I dunno. I am delirious from lack of part 2 youtube of ponies.
So Rainbow says "I can't wait to get my hands on that little buffalo; nobody tricks Rainbow Dash and gets away with it"...
... and Pinkie, who was listening, surprises Dash and says (sarcastically) "aww, you caught me! Looks like I tried to trick you and didn't get away with it, either!".
Anyone else read that as Pinkie wanting Rainbow's hooves on *her*, lol?

Well this was an interesting episode with a cute western feel and introduced a new location both physically and literally to the show. It also made me remember some of the stuff I learned about buffalo in school and that was they used to roam everywhere with a stomping ground that stretched from the edges of Canada to the middle of Mexico.
Had to laugh at Applejack's bedtime story moments and Pinkie's failed music number(showmanship was good but the song was kinda weak)and the applepie war it started.
The horse drawn train was cute but elogical, but maybe they wanted to combine both for the typical stagecoach/train robbery found in most westerns.
Pinkie causing the shitstorm was the best part of the episode by far.
Good to see I wasn't the only one watching Dash talk to Pinkie on the train and her being called "Dashie" thinking: THE PINKIEDASH TRAIN RUMBLES ON WOOO WOOOO!
Speaking of Dash, this was more her episode that AJ's not that I'm complaining.
Really? Not even after Pinkie's pet name for Rainbow came up, or her teasing dialogue about trying to "trick Dash and get away with it", right after Dash was muttering to herself about wanting to get her hooves on the Buffalo that tried to trick her and get away with it, lol
The Train had a steam engine, yet also had Ponies pulling it? Couldn't they do away with the engine? And are the pulling Ponies super ponies or something? They never had to rest even while pulling so much for so long. Hmm...maybe they had another team they switch with on the train.
And shouldn't the Horse-Drawn Carriages be Pony-Drawn Carriages?
Yeah it's kind of trivial, but that kind of threw me off for the whole episode.
Also is there any special significance that Futtershy was overly joyed to see Rainbow Dash? Or was it just a Pegasus thing.
It seemed to me like Fluttershy was happiest to see Pinkie, not Rainbow. She tackled Pinkie after they found her; and she was the one who mentioned Pinkie was missing.
With this episode... I really don't think they can deny any fourth-wall antics from Pinkie Pie anymore... y'know, as if her popping up in impossible locations last episode wasn't a giveaway in and of itself. But responding to a voiceover, and pushing open (to the point of distorting) the iris-out... that's fourth-wall gags on the level of both Animaniacs and Garfield and Friends (well, y'know, if you consider Garfield and Friends not HAVING a fourth wall to be "fourth wall antics").
Great episode. Admittedly I cringed at the thought of involving Native American culture into a fictitious media, but it was tastefully done. The only stereotypical thing I could spot was the stampede doing the whole high pitched yell thing but other then that it was handled very well. I especially loved the loonytoons antics with the pies and the anvil. I'm just hoping that this episode doesn't get Faust flack for this being "racist". But I give her, and her team, credit for portraying such a controversial topic.
@MadsIf they were stereotypical "Noble Savages" as you say then this episode would have been pretty damn racist. The fact that they didn't talk with the topical "Indian Speak" surprised me greatly. This topic was handled with taste. Yes there were a few stereotypes thrown in there but they weren't overly done.
I really liked this episode, but I've got to say... I'm a history major, and the slapstick manner of addressing anglo-indian warfare made me a little uncomfortable. BUT, I want to qualify that the message and overall delivery was very well done and the end message me very happy.
Also, vaudeville. Why? Because fucking PINKIE PIE.
Anyone know when a 1080p HD download (not Youtube) will be available? If I wanted a low-def cable box feed with commercials, I'd just watch the one on my DVR.
I honestly didn't expect them to go the buffalo-as-native-Equestrians route, because I couldn't see any way you could write that kind of character into the story and not make it either preachy or offensive.
Of course, I also didn't expect it to end in a "Blazing Saddles" pie-fight, either. This was the most random episode they've done. Hilarious!
Yeah, Princess Mononoke is my favorite movie of all time, ever, and this episode? Very little in common. I admit a certain similarity of the buffalo and the boars, but aside from that? No.
Not too bad of an episode. Was I the only one hoping for a romeo-juliet style relationship between Applejack's cousin and the buffalo girl whose name I can't remember?
I could think of a dozen solutions to the whole dilemma that would have worked just as well, and would have taken half the time.
This is the very first episode I ended up hating which is unfortunate since it started out so promising. I loved the initial train ride shenanigans and Applejack's mushy talk with her tree. I would have loved the blazing saddlesesque pie fight if not for the context it was in.
The Buffalo/settlers conflict pissed me off to no end even if it was done more tastefully than most shows do. I absolutely loathed Applejacks's " they worked hard to make a town and that spot is where the flat planting land is." Because that totally excuses taking land without permission, I refuse to believe there was nowhere else in equestria they could have settled or even that they couldn't have requested aid from unicorn ponies clear the rockier land. Also the " they won't stampede somewhere else" Really Applejack really? Tradition is so important to you in regards to your farm ( and clearing out winter) but fuck these guys and their tradition, they should go elsewhere.
The fight itself was the worst for me. First the chief was basically convinced by little strongheart to give up before the battle began with the settlers losing nothing in the process( great moral there guys) until pinkie aggravated him. ( Admittedly I loved pinkie there) Then the fight went almost entirely in the favor of the settlers which given that the buffalo can shake train cars but be taken down by pies was insulting. Finally the chief get pied and discovers 'oh hey apples are tasty' so the settler ponies can totally stay so long as they share their food with them.
Today I learned that if I feel entitled to something I can just take it as long as I partially compensate the original owner, provided said compensation is no inconvenience to me.
I love this series so much but I felt like all the wrong messages were given this time. There were so many better ways the two sides could have solved the problem that would have been fairer to all involved.
@tooMuch ...I know I am thinking too much about ponies when reading that wiki and I start to attempting to justify Apple cultivations with pony shipping....
"... is thought to be a cross between Granny Smith and Lady Hamilton" "Granny Smith, parent of the Braeburn" "Scifresh; trademark named Jazz (apple), offspring of the Braeburn"
The show's really upped the ante in quality with Diamond Dogs, Green isn't your Colour, and now this episode! :) Absolutely loved it! The intro with Rarity (best voiceover in the show, even in a crowd of fantastic other voiceover talents!) and the subsequent scene with the other ponies staying awake and chatting were fantastic (a Puff the Magic Dragon reference? :D )! The little gags when everypony was being shown around, like the Wild West and 'Mild West' dancers and the horse-drawn horse drawn carriages, were brilliant! I thought the ending was a little rushed, but such a thing can be overlooked in my mind given the quality of what came before :)
Hoo boy. So I have to say... worst episode of the season.
I don't throw comments like that out lightly, either. I'm not complaining about the scenery change (though the brown/tan color scheme is pretty jarring after green/pink ponyville), but the weak plotting.
I'm skipping over the weird "horse-drawn locomotive" because I know that was just for a visual gag and I got nothing against a comedy sting. Applejack kicks off the episode by BEING INSANE, which is really odd at the least -- I'd expect Pinkie to be the one personifying a tree, not AJ! And even Rarity seems to know that it's bizarre behavior.
I really liked the "night on a train" bit, especially the Fluttershy's contribution.
Braeburn (it's a kind of apple, of course) was annoying but I'm not going to complain too much about that. I didn't think the rapidfire punning was that funny.
And then it gets just... bad.
It seems like the moral of the episode should've been less about sharing and more "Dear Princess Celestia, today I learned that you should shut the hell up while other people are trying to have a civil discussion." I've always disliked plots that could be resolved by everyone involved would just sit down and stop interrupting for two minutes. I think even the target audience is going to pick up on the false dilemma of Dash and AJ acting like the use of the land is all or nothing.
And then when everyone does sit down to talk, apparently Pinkie causes a breakdown of negotiations. I'm not sure why. It's not her best song, but it's hardly Evil Enchantress levels of bad, and hardly the stuff of a diplomatic incident. Or TWO of them.
I'll just skip over the rule 34 implications of Pinkie dressed up like a saloon girl (i.e., prostitute)...
The big battle hit me badly. Since we're using kid-friendly pies instead of guns, the whole thing is just absurd. Following that up with a "death" scene that flips right over into everything being just fine was jarring rather than funny.
And then the solution itself... I'm not one to look for racism in every corner, but the subtext here is kind of disturbing. The Indians give up part of their land in exchange for a crop product that they can't make on their own... you mean like booze maybe? Am I the only one who got a weird parallel off of this?
I absolutely freaking love this episode. I've always liked these old western type stories. And I could actually find myself laughing at some of the parts. And the battle at the end, Well. That was incredibly... Well. Good!
@Anonymous "This is an American phrase and first appeared in the mid-20th century. Am I the only one to notice that Bloomberg the tree gets a pampered train ride to be transplanted, but his (hers? its?) cousins who were unfortunate enough to have been planted in the path of the buffalo stampede get unceremoniously chopped down?
The scene where AJ is gushing over Bloomberg's "special day--Mama's so proud of you" right after we just witnessed what was basically a mass slaughter of other apple trees was Fridge Horror at its worst.
I'm with Alfador. This episode was pretty close to the bottom of my list. It wasn't terrible, but it was disappointing.
Good points: The conversation in the dark was hilarious, as was cabaret Pinkie. Bad points: AJ's insanity with the tree seemed really out of character, and the general plot itself was badly contrived. I mean, negotiations break down because Pinkie's song was bad? Could have used another editing pass, I'm thinking.
A little late to the party, but I thought I'd share my opinion (what else is the internet for). I went into this episode expecting Applejack to finally be able to shine (she hasn't had an episode to herself in forever), but ended up a bit disappointed. This had all the elements of a great episode, but it felt a little all over the place. And for an episode that seems like it should be very AJ centric, she's hardly in it at all. Not a bad episode by far, but it just didn't do it for me. I think the big problem is that they had to establish so much new stuff (Apple-loosa, the buffalo, the past of each, etc.,) that there wasn't a lot of time for the story to really take off.
Also, Little Braveheart freaks me out. She is somehow grotesque and adorable at the same time.
A very high-and-low episode, I was all exicted for the song and was a bit disappointed. Kinda like the whole episode really, bit of squandered potential. Someone above mentioned it should have been a two parter, and I agree. Also, I'm not fond of fourth wall breakage. Sometimes it works, here it doesn't.
Yeah the comercial breaks are horribly long, I wonder how you americans can cope with that ^^ Personally I didn't like that episode too much, the opening and train scene were very good, but for me it went downhill from there on (except pinkies song and some other scenes). And that female buffalo omg I also agree that this would have been a perfect episode for AJ to shine, but strangely she didn't get enough screen time. Oh well I guess they tried too much in that short time. But I'm really looking forward for the next episode since I'm a Fluttershy fan. But I hope the others get enough screen time too since there have been a lot of FS focusing episodes lately, not that this a bad thing.
I have a 60" TV, so yep, I can tell a big difference. I'd record 'em in HD on my DVR, except that Comcast is lame and only carries the Hub in 480i, requiring it to either be watched really small and fully surrounded by black bars, or zoomed to the point of being unwatchable. Yuck.
720's ok-ish, but it looks a lot better at full resolution.
I think some people are looking too deeply into this episode concerning the buffalo, in my opinion. I thought it was done rather tastefully for a show of this type, but when a issue like this is addressed you're bound to offend some people. I'm just happy to hear the production team tried their best to be sensitive towards the issue by hiring a Native American consultant for advice from what I've heard.
Part of the charm of this show has been the way in which the stories and plots grow out of, illuminate, and reveal character traits of the principals -- the basic personalities of the six central ponies in the series opener, Twilight's selfless generosity in "The Ticket Master," Applejack's stubborn individualism in "Applebuck Season," Pinkie's moral core in "Griffon," the steel underlying Fluttershy's cowardy-cattiness in "Dragonshy," and so on. This ep seemed disappointing to me because the story and plot all followed from the situation, and had essentially nothing to do with who any of the principals are. It could have starred Bugs Bunny, Sonic the Hedgehog, or Laurel and Hardy without affecting the script in any important way.
I note that this episode was written by the same guy who did "Feeling Pinkie Keen": Dave Polsky. Maybe it's just me, but is the reason some folks weren't happy with this episode the same reason folks didn't care much for FPK? Not necessarily about the heavy-handed moral, but because both episodes were so random in their plotting that any moral at all tacked to the end would seem heavy-handed?
Regarding Polsky as a writer, I have to credit him for enjoying a good sight-gag, and both FPK and OaB are top tier episodes for that. Unfortunately, IMHO, he doesn't have a good feel for the characters. My main gripe with FPK was that Twilight seemed out of character, and in OaB here, both Rainbow Dash and Applejack seemed way off. I don't know if you could call it poor writing, or just maybe Polsky has a different "take" on the characters than the other writers do, and so his episodes seem a little "off".
That Furry is a notorious Furry porn artist named Steven Martin who resides in Yorba Linda California (Not the comic who actually has talent). Martin actually tried to sell an idea of doing adult Tiny Toons cartoons along with showing his portfolio, filled with Tiny Toons porn. Martin was physically escorted from the building by security. To this day the man is obsessed with his porn art, thrusting it in anybodies face at Comic Con International in Artists alley. Usually calling out a "Guy..Guy...Hey Guy!!" at anybody who cracks open a wallet nearby and within eyeshot of him.
Knowing from his history, he will milk MLP for any and all porn he can to make as much money he can if he smells the chance to make money. The Man is a total leech, creep and pervert of the worst kind.
I can't understand all this excitement about ponies pulling engine.
It was common in wild west to use horses to pull wagons and trains. So just pretend, that they had run out of coal or water. And because they're horses (sorta of) they can pull s the train by themselves to a nearest town to solve the problem.
I am pleased with how the buffalo were portrayed: they actually got the dress-hierarchy thing down, didn't mix and match Native cultures, etc etc. As for the names, I couldn't tell if they were trying to do spinoffs of native names or pony names or what, but it was still very cute.
Maybe I have a soft spot for animated trains (Night on the Galactic Railroad, Spirited Away, etc), but the inside of the train was just precious, especially that main sleeper car.
I'm not really into pony shipping, but the ship-fuel in this episode was pretty amusing. I also agree with the above comments that the characterization was a bit off... FPK was a good episode, but something felt off there as well. Maybe too much of a Pinkie focus? (never!) Hopefully the this writer will improve as the show progresses, because I actually liked the "feel" of FPK and OtB. This ep goes right up there with Sonic Rainboom, good job Faust & PoniTeam.
Obviously they found an ancient, rusted-out hulk of a locomotive long ago, Princess Celestia told them it had once been used for transport, and they made a replica of it and revitalized the rail system... but they had no idea how to make a steam engine work, so they just pull it with a team.
I'm tellin' ya, post-Singularity ponies...seriously... their sun went red giant eons ago and they had to move the planet and create an artificial sun and moon, maintained by the god-tier ponies...
So far I got all the episodes from youtube. Though I enjoy the 1080 versions just as the next pony, Im fine with less aswell, what I really long for is an option to have the episodes in one file and not cut into two files.
Since our borny has been taken down, I couldn't find somepony else to download the new episode from in one file, so I have downloaded the iTunes thing in MKV format (thanks for the link brony).
My question is: what's up with the colours in the iTunes rips? It feels...pale and weird. Even the low quality movies on youtube seem to have more color in them when I download them.
Do I lack something? A codec? Need to set something?
Yet another HUGE FAVORITE. When this season ends I'll have to go back, rewatch the whole thing, and try to actually choose my faves and rank them all. Anyway, my little commentary~ Though I prefer to refer to the tribe as bison, since that's more correct than buffalo. SADDY-WADDY WAWITY and AJ's so funny being all motherly towards Bloomburg. I LOVED the (horse-drawn) train scene; way to set up an exciting ep, having the whole gang traveling in such a cozy car! =D LOL--Huffy. "She's not a tree, Dashie." But wait; 4:08: Wasn't Rainbow in a top bunk? OMG. Rainbow is so my favorite. What a badass. And I'm loving the classic cartoony feel they gave this! Hahaha, Braeburn; I like him and the other denizens of Appleloosa. Very clever settlement that is with the horses drawin' horse-drawn carriages and mild west dances. Spike's casual friendliness with the bison was fantastic. Wahaha, Pinkie is so loco in the coco. x3
Chief Thunderhooves is one hella dramatic dude (emphasized by letterboxing, I love it!) I mean, this whole ep is an epic western Natives vs. settlers plot. The 'preparation for the big showdown' scene reminds me of the "Savages" sequence in Pocahontas. HAHA, Fluttershy's Pinkie pounce, and then Pinkie's completely ineffective (but great) saloon girl song with which she ruins everything and DAT OUTFIT. XDD AND confirmation that they're vegetarians. ^__^ HOLD UP THERE PARDNER! 5:41: Any...BODY?!? Great Celestia in heaven...! *drops dead* Rainbow stood up rather quickly whilst talking to the chief before the battle. Anyway, I absolutely adore her friendship w/ the bison. And how all the ponies try to mediate, prevent violence, and buy time to think up a suitable compromise. SUCH INTENSELY EMOTIONAL DRAMA AND THEEEENN...PIE IS THE ANSWER. YES, LET IT BE KNOWN. Eat a pie for peace. Still felt bad for the trees felled to clear the path, but Spike and Twilight need more paper to write their letters to Celestia, and everypony else needs it as well so that Derpy will have mail to deliver. 8D I did wonder whether they couldn't have transplanted them also, but maybe they were older than Bloomburg and it wouldn't have worked. One last note for now; I LOVE DA ENDING with AJ & Dash & Little Strongheart! +D I assume we'll be seeing her again in the future...?
Ooh wait...somepony pointed out that since Twilight was including the bison in her statement, "anybody" is actually accurate. True, true, true. It just sounded so strange to hear her say the word. xD
Uh... I may be the only one out there, but this was my /least/ favorite episode. It didn't do much for character development--it just furthered some stereotypes.
Although, I'm always happy to see new species in Equestria. :)
AJ's behavior didn't seem that strange to me; it only surprised me for about a split second. xD ^^ And I do feel differently about most of the other points, but respect your feelings. I really loved this one right from the outset; the train scene was just awesome. I was glad to see them all heading someplace new and far outside of Ponyville. "AAAA-AA-PPLELOOSA!" *rears up* XDDD

Also is there any special significance that Futtershy was overly joyed to see Rainbow Dash? Or was it just a Pegasus thing.
@BlitzWing00
ReplyDeleteIt seemed to me like Fluttershy was happiest to see Pinkie, not Rainbow. She tackled Pinkie after they found her; and she was the one who mentioned Pinkie was missing.
In before Little Strongheart/Rainbow Dash ships
ReplyDeleteWith this episode...

ReplyDelete@MadsIf they were stereotypical "Noble Savages" as you say then this episode would have been pretty damn racist. The fact that they didn't talk with the topical "Indian Speak" surprised me greatly. This topic was handled with taste. Yes there were a few stereotypes thrown in there but they weren't overly done.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this episode, but I've got to say... I'm a history major, and the slapstick manner of addressing anglo-indian warfare made me a little uncomfortable. BUT, I want to qualify that the message and overall delivery was very well done and the end message me very happy.
ReplyDeleteAlso, vaudeville. Why? Because fucking PINKIE PIE.
I can see it now...
ReplyDeleteRD: What are you doing?! You have to get out of here!
PP: I do?! Okay! *walks through comic frame*
Oh, that Pinkie...it was stilll a fairly solid episode, though.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know when a 1080p HD download (not Youtube) will be available? If I wanted a low-def cable box feed with commercials, I'd just watch the one on my DVR.
ReplyDeleteI honestly didn't expect them to go the buffalo-as-native-Equestrians route, because I couldn't see any way you could write that kind of character into the story and not make it either preachy or offensive.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I also didn't expect it to end in a "Blazing Saddles" pie-fight, either. This was the most random episode they've done. Hilarious!
Would someone be kind enough to re-host the cable rip over at mediafire/hotfile? Megaupload disconnects all the time for no reasons for me.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Yeah, Princess Mononoke is my favorite movie of all time, ever, and this episode? Very little in common. I admit a certain similarity of the buffalo and the boars, but aside from that? No.
ReplyDeleteNot too bad of an episode. Was I the only one hoping for a romeo-juliet style relationship between Applejack's cousin and the buffalo girl whose name I can't remember?
I could think of a dozen solutions to the whole dilemma that would have worked just as well, and would have taken half the time.
Eh, I give it a B.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteThose two totally did it later that night.
@Cottonmouth
ReplyDeleteThat's cousin Braeburn - after the apple.
This is the very first episode I ended up hating which is unfortunate since it started out so promising. I loved the initial train ride shenanigans and Applejack's mushy talk with her tree. I would have loved the blazing saddlesesque pie fight if not for the context it was in.
ReplyDeleteThe Buffalo/settlers conflict pissed me off to no end even if it was done more tastefully than most shows do.
@tooMuch
ReplyDelete...I know I am thinking too much about ponies when reading that wiki and I start to attempting to justify Apple cultivations with pony shipping....
"... is thought to be a cross between Granny Smith and Lady Hamilton"
"Granny Smith, parent of the Braeburn"
"Scifresh; trademark named Jazz (apple), offspring of the Braeburn"
ReplyDeleteOur applepies will blot out the sun.
ReplyDeleteNever seen such a peacefull battle..ever! Even pillows are more lethal than this.
Hoo boy. So I have to say... worst episode of the season.
ReplyDeleteI don't throw comments like that out lightly, either.
Well. Good!
ReplyDeleteLove this episode!

Not to sound ungrateful, but that's 720p, not 1080p :-\
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing "Over a Barrel" is a play on words, like most of the episode names, but the meaning is lost on me. Can anyone explain?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDelete"This is an American phrase and first appeared in the mid-20th century. It is supposed that it alludes to the actual situation of being draped over a barrel, either to empty the lungs of someone who has been close to drowning, or to give a flogging. Either way, the position of helplessness and in being under someone else's control is what is being referred to."
-- phrases.org
Am I the only one to notice that Bloomberg the tree gets a pampered train ride to be transplanted, but his (hers? its?) cousins who were unfortunate enough to have been planted in the path of the buffalo stampede get unceremoniously chopped down?
ReplyDeleteThe scene where AJ is gushing over Bloomberg's "special day--Mama's so proud of you" right after we just witnessed what was basically a mass slaughter of other apple trees was Fridge Horror at its worst.
I'm with Alfador. This episode was pretty close to the bottom of my list. It wasn't terrible, but it was disappointing.
ReplyDeleteGood points:
The conversation in the dark was hilarious, as was cabaret Pinkie.
Bad points:
AJ's insanity with the tree seemed really out of character, and the general plot itself was badly contrived.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Little Braveheart freaks me out. She is somehow grotesque and adorable at the same time.
*Strongheart
ReplyDeleteThe desert conditions surrounding Appaloosa show what happens in areas of Equestria where no pegasus ponies live.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous Or where there are no Earth Ponies to use their connection to the land to make plants grow.
ReplyDeletePonies = terraformers. Unfortunately, the other intelligent species in their world don't necessarily appreciate that.
A very high-and-low episode, I was all exicted for the song and was a bit disappointed. Kinda like the whole episode really, bit of squandered potential. Someone above mentioned it should have been a two parter, and I agree.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm not fond of fourth wall breakage. Sometimes it works, here it doesn't.
Off topic: How many ad breaks do americans need!?
You guys must be jaded. I thought the buffalo designs were awesome.
ReplyDeleteYeah the comercial breaks are horribly long, I wonder how you americans can cope with that ^^
ReplyDeletePersonally I didn't like that episode too much, the opening and train scene were very good, but for me it went downhill from there on (except pinkies song and some other scenes). And that female buffalo omg
I also agree that this would have been a perfect episode for AJ to shine, but strangely she didn't get enough screen time. Oh well I guess they tried too much in that short time.
But I'm really looking forward for the next episode since I'm a Fluttershy fan. But I hope the others get enough screen time too since there have been a lot of FS focusing episodes lately, not that this a bad thing.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteCan you tell the difference? I sure as hell can't unless I sit really close to the screen.
I'm not a good enough artist to do it, but someone needs to draw Pinkie Pie as Colette Du Bois from Malifaux now.

@Cottonmouth Yea, its Braeburn, its a type of apple.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteI have a 60" TV, so yep, I can tell a big difference.
No download? =[
ReplyDeleteI think some people are looking too deeply into this episode concerning the buffalo, in my opinion. I thought it was done rather tastefully for a show of this type, but when a issue like this is addressed you're bound to offend some people. I'm just happy to hear the production team tried their best to be sensitive towards the issue by hiring a Native American consultant for advice from what I've heard.
ReplyDeletePart of the charm of this show has been the way in which the stories and plots grow out of, illuminate, and reveal character traits of the principals -- the basic personalities of the six central ponies in the series opener, Twilight's selfless generosity in "The Ticket Master," Applejack's stubborn individualism in "Applebuck Season," Pinkie's moral core in "Griffon," the steel underlying Fluttershy's cowardy-cattiness in "Dragonshy," and so on. This ep seemed disappointing to me because the story and plot all followed from the situation, and had essentially nothing to do with who any of the principals are. It could have starred Bugs Bunny, Sonic the Hedgehog, or Laurel and Hardy without affecting the script in any important way.
ReplyDeleteLoved the episode. Was unsure about any paralel to NAs at first just because such things are usually done poorly. Loved the buffalos though.
ReplyDeleteAs for shipping, I'm weirded out by it, but its not hurting anyone so why should I care too much about someones fantasies/interests?
Yeah, the buffalos were cool--very nice design, and actually, I like the idea of non-pony civilizations in Equestria. Expands the world a lot.
ReplyDeleteI note that this episode was written by the same guy who did "Feeling Pinkie Keen": Dave Polsky. Maybe it's just me, but is the reason some folks weren't happy with this episode the same reason folks didn't care much for FPK? Not necessarily about the heavy-handed moral, but because both episodes were so random in their plotting that any moral at all tacked to the end would seem heavy-handed?
ReplyDeleteRegarding Polsky as a writer, I have to credit him for enjoying a good sight-gag, and both FPK and OaB are top tier episodes for that. Unfortunately, IMHO, he doesn't have a good feel for the characters. My main gripe with FPK was that Twilight seemed out of character, and in OaB here, both Rainbow Dash and Applejack seemed way off. I don't know if you could call it poor writing, or just maybe Polsky has a different "take" on the characters than the other writers do, and so his episodes seem a little "off".
did anybody else feel like that could work as a movie in some scenes

ReplyDeleteThat Furry is a notorious Furry porn artist named Steven Martin who resides in Yorba Linda California (Not the comic who actually has talent).

ReplyDeleteIt was common in wild west to use horses to pull wagons and trains. So just pretend, that they had run out of coal or water. And because they're horses (sorta of) they can pull s
the train by themselves to a nearest town to solve the problem.
I see no problem with that train.
Only just-just got around to watching this. God-tier episode.
ReplyDeleteI think this episode taught us all an important lesson. Never let Pinkie Pie settle a land dispute.

This was a really awesome episode.
ReplyDeleteI am pleased with how the buffalo were portrayed: they actually got the dress-hierarchy thing down, didn't mix and match Native cultures, etc etc.
HD episode :[
ReplyDeleteObviously they found an ancient, rusted-out hulk of a locomotive long ago, Princess Celestia told them it had once been used for transport, and they made a replica of it and revitalized the rail system... but they had no idea how to make a steam engine work, so they just pull it with a team.
ReplyDeleteI'm tellin' ya, post-Singularity ponies...seriously... their sun went red giant eons ago and they had to move the planet and create an artificial sun and moon, maintained by the god-tier ponies...
Broffalos. OOOOh yeaaaaah.
ReplyDeleteSo far I got all the episodes from youtube. Though I enjoy the 1080 versions just as the next pony, Im fine with less aswell, what I really long for is an option to have the episodes in one file and not cut into two files.
ReplyDeleteSince our borny has been taken down, I couldn't find somepony else to download the new episode from in one file, so I have downloaded the iTunes thing in MKV format (thanks for the link brony).
Anyway, my little commentary~
ReplyDeleteThough I prefer to refer to the tribe as bison, since that's more correct than buffalo.
SADDY-WADDY WAWITY and AJ's so funny being all motherly towards Bloomburg.
I LOVED the (horse-drawn) train scene; way to set up an exciting ep, having the whole gang traveling in such a cozy car! =D
LOL--Huffy. "She's not a tree, Dashie."
But wait; 4:08: Wasn't Rainbow in a top bunk?
Wahaha, Pinkie is so loco in the coco. x3
Chief Thunderhooves is one hella dramatic dude (emphasized by letterboxing, I love it!)
I mean, this whole ep is an epic western Natives vs. settlers plot.
XDD
AND confirmation that they're vegetarians. ^__^
HOLD UP THERE PARDNER! 5:41: Any...BODY?!? Great Celestia in heaven...! *drops dead*
Rainbow stood up rather quickly whilst talking to the chief before the battle.
YES, LET IT BE
KNOWN. Eat a pie for peace.
Still felt bad for the trees felled to clear the path, but Spike and Twilight need more paper to write their letters to Celestia, and everypony else needs it as well so that Derpy will have mail to deliver. 8D I did wonder whether they couldn't have transplanted them also, but maybe they were older than Bloomburg and it wouldn't
have worked.
It just sounded so strange to hear her say the word. xD
ReplyDeleteUh... I may be the only one out there, but this was my /least/ favorite episode. It didn't do much for character development--it just furthered some stereotypes.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, I'm always happy to see new species in Equestria. :)
@Cottonmouth
ReplyDeleteIt's Braeburn, like the apple.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braeburn
@Escher
ReplyDeleteAJ's behavior didn't seem that strange to me; it only surprised me for about a split second. xD ^^ And I do feel differently about most of the other points, but respect your feelings. I really loved this one right from the outset; the train scene was just awesome. I was glad to see them all heading someplace new and far outside of Ponyville.
"AAAA-AA-PPLELOOSA!" *rears up* XDDD
